Hello,

Top of this week’s list is a colossal album from Prurient. Best known for his blistering noise records (most often released on his own Hospital Productions imprint), Dominik Fernow is also a founding member of Cold Cave, and it was during a long tour of Europe often spent listening to Techno that he put together ‘Bermuda Drain’, an incredible consolidation of his noise and metal roots with darkest ambient and techno wave modes. It’s hugely recommended.

Finding time out from Demdike Stare, Miles Whittaker presents his first release for Modern Love under his own name, a four track rummage through abstracted Techno, House and freeform templates that make for a 30 minute ride that more or less reflect the varied influences and styles that he’s worked through over the last 15 years. The Not Not Fun label, meanwhile, offer up a double dose of the good stuff with new releases from LA Vampires and Holy Strays. The first features LA Vampires jamming with one of our favourite producers right now, Ital, strutting from mushed tape-loop boogie to mutant Prince-indebted noise-pop in the wickedest style. The other is from Holy Strays, improving on their fuggy cassette debut with two surprisingly lush and detailed lysregic arrangements coming off like a lo-fi Raime meets Forest Swords and Amon Duul. Go cop.

Charlatan is the sometime working moniker for Digitalis label-head Brad Rose, and is home to his most explicitly electronic productions. ‘Triangles’ is his new album and features the most sharply rendered material in his repertoire to date, richly infusing his sound with a lysergic clarity and quasi-religious electronic spirituality. Imagine a blend of Leyland Kirby and Brad’s own Altar Eagle project and you’re almost there. Oh, and initial copies come on semi-opaque yellow vinyl, for the collectors.

The Sight Below’s much loved ‘Glider’ album has, surprisingly, never been available on vinyl before, so this week’s deluxe edition on Ghostly International is most welcome, and includes a couple of new and exclusive remixes courtesy of Biosphere and Pantha Du Prince. We’ve got an upfront exclusive on this one so – look sharp.

Mudboy is a pretty new name to us despite having previously released music for noted labels like Not Not Fun and Digitalis, and on the basis of ‘This Is Folk Music’ for Weird Forest, we’ll be keeping a beady ear on his moves from now. His efficient sense of minimalism bears comparisons with Terry Riley and Skaters, but there’s also strange sub-Techno elements to be accounted for and ultimately, he’s just got an entirely individual take on the neo-Kosmische synth sound. Only 500 copies of this, with pull out poster. Also from the same label, Terrors’ ‘Lagan Qord’ touches down on vinyl, documenting a mysterious selection of wandering Americana and timeless ambience glow akin to The Caretaker.

Also of note: Senufo Editions present a focussed set of improvisations from GRM member Kassel Jaeger, Ahmad Zahir’s ‘Hip 70’s Beats’ offers a really endearing collection of, folk-pop and brilliantly psyched-out moments from the under-represented Afghan pop archives, while on the dancefloor we’ve got joints from Funkineven and NKC to shout about. Also arriving with us this week, new releases from Damu, Seiji, Mount Kimbie, Richard Youngs, Joanna Newsom, Noveller, Goldie, Trunk, Finders Keepers, Cupp Cave, Stones Throw, BFI, Synkro and a whole ruck of represses from Wackies.

Have yourselves a fabulous week…

Peace! nekkers…xx

Albums of the Week

PRURIENT
Bermuda Drain
ELECTRONIC
Hydra Head
LP // £18.99

**Includes digital download code redeemable from the label** This eagerly awaited new LP from Prurient begins with a blood-curdling scream – but thereafter all expectations are defied. If like us you’ve always been fascinated by the more reflective, electronic side of Dominick Fernow’s catalogue – thus far restricted to the odd album, his work with Cold Cave and a couple of choice side projects – then all your Christmases have come at once. Reportedly inspired by long drives around mainland Europe listening to minimal techno, Bermuda Drain pulsates with sequenced electronic menace from the off, and is the first Prurient record to pack bass heft to match his customary treble assault. While Fernow’s vocals have always been central to the Prurient project, they’re usually barely audible beneath the punishing swathes of feedback; here they come to the fore, sounding more vulnerable and more powerful than ever before, if occasionally a touch comical (for all the cathartic force of delivery, his lyric about wanting to “take a tree branch and ram it inside you” on ‘Palm Tree Corpse’ is liable to raise a smile). Sniggers aside, some of the best and most accessible music Fernow’s ever recorded can be found on this album: the title track is a masterful bit of post-apocalytic ambient, reminding us of that Stars Explode split with Cold Cave, but less clogged, more vividly realised. Bold, original and astonishingly well-produced throughout, Bermuda Drain really is a new peak in Prurient’s prolific career; noise fascists might turn their nose up at its synth-pop mannerisms, but for the rest of us it’s a welcome twist in the tale. From the cinematic minimal wave of ‘Many Jewel Surrounds The Crown’, through the snotty electro thrash of ‘A Meal Can Be Made’ and the coruscating industrial noise of ‘Watch Silently’, this is an album that surprises and stimulates at every turn; hell, ‘Let’s Make A Slave’ could almost – almost – be Detroit techno.

CHARLATAN
Triangles
ELECTRONIC
DIGITALIS
LP // £11.99

*Initial copies come on semi-opaque yellow vinyl – pressing limited to 450 copies for the world* Charlatan is the moniker adopted by Digitalis label-head Brad Rose to express his most lucid electronic visions. In contrast with his multifarious body of works, he articulates the majestic crests and synthesized shapes of ‘Triangles’ with far sharper contours and a taste for more piquant dissonance which resonates on the mind like a mild acid. This heightened clarity also renders its emotional impact that much more powerful, lending the whole album an almost quasi-religious atmosphere and intent. This sense of lambent electronic spirituality radiates from the gracefully ascending chords of opener ‘Lime Beauty’ while a slowly motorik machine beat chugs us deep into the landscape, the dissonant, arpeggiated vortex of ‘Faint Blue Outlines’ and the sombrely reflective penitence of ‘Vodka Rocks’. Turning over, there’s the poignant pay-off of ‘Traces’, casting a spellbinding mesh of skyward synthlines over loping drum pulses, slowly shuffling forward in the queue to be received by the deliciously warped dissonance of ‘Foxes’, recalling the ambiguous twinges of Leyland Kirby but with the glorious impact of Rose’s own Altar Eagle compositions. The final deliverance is Brad’s celestially sanguine ‘Swimming Pool Summer Nights’, a transcendent piece of instrumental ambient pop drinking from the chalice of Talk Talk and Joy Division but augmented by blooming 808 beats which define the record’s supernatural sense of space.

THE SIGHT BELOW
Glider (Deluxe Vinyl Edition)
ELECTRONIC
Ghostly International
2LP // £19.99

**First time ever on vinyl, including bonus remixes from Pantha Du Prince and Biosphere – Includes MP3 download voucher redeemable from the label** This incredible new album could have been tailor-made for these pages: its combination of warm, evocative ambience and submerged percussion directly taps into the legacy left by Wolfgang Voigt’s GAS project whilst offering a fresh slant on that post-classical sound that’s so rarely executed with any originality but which is here crafted with an expert hand. ‘Dour’s skeletal framework of minimal 4/4 kicks brings some rhythmic structure to the glistening guitar tones and nebulous surges of electronic ephemera, meaning that this is more than another drone record – there always seems to be a purposefulness and incredible emotional weight to these compositions. The presence of a rhythmic guiding hand adds a further dimension, ‘At First Touch’ exposing an interplay between sparse, drum-imposed machination and a liquid musical core that slowly reveals itself in bright colours, while ‘Further Away’, leaves a 12k-esque brand of microscopic construction that, once again, works perfectly. The beats are restored at the very foundations of the mix for ‘The Sunset Passage’ though, with some careful filtration momentarily channelling that sublime Konigsforst feel, topping off one of the year’s first great albums.

LA VAMPIRES GOES ITAL
Streetwise
ELECTRONIC
NOT NOT FUN
LP // £12.99

*KILLER LP of slow motion fugged-up strut beats, tape loops, stray synthlines and waterstained vocals.* NNF’s latest sees Los Angeles’ most respected label mistress flick through her rolodex for a new hookup to cruise the strip with. This time it’s Daniel Martin-McCormick aka Mi Ami aka Ital, aka one of our favourite producers in the world right now. ‘LA Vampires Goes Ital’ is a slow motion hi-five of fugged-up strut beats put together from mushed tape loops, stray synthlines and waterstained vocals fed through a matrix of 2nd hand effects. The results are primed for the most dazed days of summer, bobbing from the sun-melted drone pop of ‘Streetwise’, to the sounds of an inner city festival heard through low-lying smog from ten blocks away on ‘Tons Of Love’, hearing the baked Soul II Soul vibes of ‘A Woman Is A Woman’ booming from a nearby car, and checking the head-wreck of ‘The Chic Shall Inherit The Earth’. Like they say, it’s “…too gritty and blasted for dancing but too bangin’ to sit still, this is a real mutant zone…”. A must have for those heads who love noise in the middle of summer.

MUDBOY
This Is Folk Music
ELECTRONIC
Weird Forest
LP // £11.99

* Amazing album of sub-Techno pulses and introverted Kosmische from Not Not Fun’s Mudboy. Limited to an edition of 500 copies, includes 22″ x 22″ insert and a download code redeemable directly from the label* Mudboy’s ongoing minimalist kosmische saga ‘This Is Folk Music’ brings him to the Weird Forest (label). A multidisciplinary artist also known for his installation works, Mudboy’s musical output has been compared with Terry Riley but is also in thrall to processes of Dub reduction and Cagean ideas of the very principles of sound, leading to compatible split releases with Ducktails and Belgium’s Orphan Fairytale for a load of labels including Last Visible Dog and, most recently, Not Not Fun. Mudboy’s conception of folk harks back to that school of German electronic pioneers like Roedelius, Schulze and Die Welttraumforscher, and it’s perhaps the more eccentric side of the latter with whom he shares most in common. His music isn’t quite as indebted to Swiss/Germanic folk melodies, but it does have that odder feel for endearingly twee, naif melodies, albeit filtered through the mind of an underground American artist obviously exposed to all kinds of freaky musical madness. Through eight tracks he dreamily segues from reedy, meditative repetitions recalling Ducktails, Skaters or Riley, through darker zones like the amazing ‘Beirut Dance Party’ underpinned by droning sub-Techno pulses and scrawled with hyper-pizzcato strings, to blissfully glassy, timelessly pastoral experiments such as ‘Dawn Treader’ and ‘Sailing Song’. Highly Recommended.

KASSEL JAEGER
algae
ELECTRONIC
Senufo Editions
CD // £11.99

*Hand-numbered, letter-pressed sleeve with insert* Kassel Jaeger returns to the rarified Senufo Editions, following 2010’s ‘Aerae’ disc with ‘Algae’, a concentrated study on the intersections of instrumental improvisations and field recordings. A resident of Paris and a member of the city’s famed GRM, or Groupe de Recherches Musicales institution, Kassel’s meticulous methods of microphone placement create fragile, or metastable sonic ecologies with acute attention to the filigree balance of tones and interlacing soundwaves. His improvisations are performed on positive organ, marxophone (a kind of fretless zither), tremoloa (another sort of zither), Turkish crescent (an archaic sort of marching band percussion), nfir and EMS Synthi AKS, and have the quiet, meditative quality of “tidal movements and leave, here and there, inanimate organisms that sediment and dry”. The album takes a palindromic structure formed around three tracks: two 15 minute pieces sandwiching a four minute segment. Firstly ‘Algae I’ organically evolves catalytic small sounds which fizz and flesh into a quivering, respirating mass of metallic shudders and droning harmonics. In the middle, ‘Plateau’ conducts a relatively brief piece of tender, pale-hued harmonics, while the ‘Algae II’ is much more kinetic, revolving around tensile, processed strings and swelling mass of drones reaching a climactic moire of metallic harmonies with a larger emotional payoff than you might expect from something so ostensibly esoteric. Recommended.

AHMAD ZAHIR
Hip 70’s Afghan Beats!
WORLD
GUERSSEN
LP // £16.99

*Incredible LP from Ahmad Zahir, one of Afghanistan’s most enduring and best loved singers* Born in 1946 as the son of influential politician and later Prime Minister (1971-72), Dr. Zahid, Ahmad pursued a career in music from school, where he was already penning his own lyrics and compositions. He amassed a cherished repetoire including his own takes on well-recognized Dari poems, and by the peak of his fame he’d been chosen national singer of the year six times and laid down over 19 albums, each containing 12-16 new songs. A charismatic personality and rich catalogue of recordings meant he was considered something of a national treasure, and he would attempt to reflect the voice of the people in line with socio-political changes through the ’70s, eventually leading to his assassination on his 33rd birthday, in 1979 at the hands of his best friend on the orders of communist backed General Daud Taroon. Today he’s given the title of Afghanistan’s Nightingale, and that name resonates through his deep tenor on these nine songs, ranging from lush folk-pop ballads to some truly killer, dubbed-out and psychedelic moments such as ‘Laily Laily’, Nishe Gazdom’ or ‘Az Tangna & Mahbas Tarrikey’. Includes 12×12″ liner notes. Tipped for all exotic sonic time travellers and fans of Finders Keepers or Sublime Frequencies.

TERRORS
Lagan Qord
FOLK / AMERICANA
Weird Forest
LP // £13.99

Terrors, aka Elijah Forrest has been honing a distinct sound built on his experiences travelling America, from Baltimore to California. He’s been dropping tapes on the likes of Bathetic, Cavelife, and Monorail Trespassing for the last few years, from which Weird Forest have culled a sort of best-of-to-date collection for ‘Lagan Qord’. They’re all remastered, but still trustingly swaddled in tape noise, texturing his often sad, simple songs with a mystery and tempered timelessness. They range from hypnotic slabs of drone/noise to fuzzily distanced folk ballads, solemn instrumental guitar wanderings and semi-mystical ambient glows reminding of The Caretaker. Lovely.

Singles of the Week

MILES
Facets
ELECTRONIC
Modern Love
12″ // £7.99

*30 minute EP of dismantled Techno, House and squashed electronics from Miles, one half of Demdike Stare* Miles is one half of Demdike Stare and Pendle Coven and has recorded in the past under the aliases Millie and MLZ. After almost 15 years writing music, this is the first release Miles is putting out under his own name and marks a turning point of sorts in his production style, or rather, in its sequencing. ‘Facets’ brings together different ends of his production style, unifying elements of the House and Techno he’s most commonly released as MLZ together with the more broken production signatures usually reserved for Millie and the darkened tribalism of Demdike Stare. “Flawed” opens the set with a Linn loop from the archives, stretched and slowed down with an intoxicated aesthetic that’s somewhere between House and Dub, before “Lustre” re-configures source material originally keyed in by labelmate Andy Stott with a nice line in squashed percussion. ‘Primer’ on the flip extends from a Demdike Stare outtake and veers off into an analogue drum machine ruckus, before “On The fly” ends the set with a recording made straight to mixing desk from an array of mis-wired and malfunctioning drum boxes, contact microphones and samplers, over at his studio The Mill earlier this year.

HOLY STRAYS
Enlightenment
ELECTRONIC
NOT NOT FUN
7″ // £5.99

Holy Strays follows up his scuzzy debut tape for NNF with two surprisingly lush and undeniably ace electronic trips. The meld of sparse, reverberating drums and plangent psych licks on ‘Enlightenment’ calls to mind Forest Swords jamming with a lo-fi Raime, on some sweet Hoffman’s in a cabin in the Alps, after listening to loads of Amon Duul. Flipsude ‘Phrenesia’ is a moodier counterpoint, sucking us in with wormholing synthline while blunted programmed beats and a lone rave mistress vocal threaten to almost launch into a kind of FSOL track, but thankfully hold back and ends up spinning into a sort of smudged Balearic trance pattern for the Knew Age mystics. Aces, both of them.

FUNKINEVEN
Roland’s Jam
BEATS / DOWNTEMPO / BOOGIE
Eglo Records
12″ // £6.49

Rudest wrigglin’, optimised acid jams from London’s highly regarded Funkineven. This is is his fourth shot on Floating Points and Alex Nut’s Eglo label, and really doesn’t let up with the deeply satisfying 303 burns. A-side is the massive ‘Roland’s Jam’, running bulky kicks set with biggest warehouse reverbs against lip-bitin’ acid squiggles and layers of frictional but slippery synths to get ya sweatin’. Flipside ‘Take It Back’ jams on a warped boogie pivot, factored with kinetic video signatures a la VHS Head, and ‘XXX’ takes that vibe somewhere more suggestive and sleazin’. DJs and dancers need a piece of this. TIP!

NKC
The Pyramids EP
TECHNO / HOUSE
Forefront Recordings
12″ // £5.99

First spotted on a cool white label for Awkward Movements, NKC drops a bulky load of Grime-laced Funky on Forefront Recordings. The label’s last release, Slackk’s ‘Synthetics’ is hands-down one of the releases of 2011, and to be fair, this one isn’t so far behind. With a similarly potent brew of kinetic Grime agility and rolling Funky suss, NKC dips from the relatively nice and breezy House jaunt of ‘Partisan Efforts’, to more slammin’ snares and distorted kicks fused with hypnotic bleeps for the title track, while ‘Sellout’ is a properly muscular road rager, swinging low and burly for the tribalists, before ‘Untitled’ builds a swirling, swaggering groove from hard-edged drums and tripped-out synths. A super solid TIP!

Thin Consolation

Belgium’s Cupp Cave in neck-snappin’ effect on eight tracks of unstable electronic beatmongering. The bloke also known as Ssaliva for Leaving Records is in funny form here, jamming out crooked, loping beats with the zaniest melodies and roundest production. Starting at the crumbled BoomBap of ‘Police Patrol’ we zig-zag through the tumbling, proggily melodic fusion of ‘Light Crusaderz’ and ‘Race Age’ and over to three tracks of smoother 8-bit electro-boogie…

EMALKAY
The World / Transpose
Dub Police Records
12″ // £6.49

Emalkay aims higher with pop-step construction ‘The World’ featuring Lena Cullen, built in the image of Magnetic Man or Von D with tranced out riff and moody diva vocal over Technoid rhythms.
HATCHA & LOST
Albarsha / Welcome To Tibet
Sin City Recordings
12″ // £6.49

Spliffed-up bassbin spiritualism from Croydon’s feared Hatcha & Lost duo. On ‘Albarsha’ they roll out lunging pneumatic subs and high-pressured junglist drops with humid atmospheres and ethnodelic samples for effect. If you can handle the slightly cloying samples on ‘Welcome To Tibet’, you’ll find some properly twysted bass and drum syncopation approaching Skull Disco ground.
MARTYN / SHUT UP AND DANCE
Epileptic (Martyn Mix)
Shut Up and Dance
12″ // £6.49

RE-PRESS! Rave veterans Shut Up And Dance buff up their Reebok Classics for a return to the floor with some well matured hardcore house on ‘Epileptic’. Bringing their 20+ years of experience to the cut, SUAD throw a rude funk synth riff over a cool breakbeat rhythm track for a highly effective little mover, but it’s the Martyn remix that’s got us buzzing with a top drawer darkstyle revision of…

Hydra Head
LP // £18.99

**Includes digital download code redeemable from the label** This eagerly awaited new LP from Prurient begins with a blood-curdling scream – but thereafter all expectations are defied. If like us you’ve always been fascinated by the more reflective, electronic side of Dominick Fernow’s catalogue – thus far restricted to the odd album, his work with Cold Cave and a couple of choice side projects – then all your Christmases have…

DIGITALIS
LP // £11.99

*Initial copies come on semi-opaque yellow vinyl – pressing limited to 450 copies for the world* Charlatan is the moniker adopted by Digitalis label-head Brad Rose to express his most lucid electronic visions. In contrast with his multifarious body of works, he articulates the majestic crests and synthesized shapes of ‘Triangles’ with far sharper contours and a taste for more piquant dissonance which resonates on the mind like a mild…

Ghostly International
2LP // £19.99

**First time ever on vinyl, including bonus remixes from Pantha Du Prince and Biosphere – Includes MP3 download voucher redeemable from the label** This incredible new album could have been tailor-made for these pages: its combination of warm, evocative ambience and submerged percussion directly taps into the legacy left by Wolfgang Voigt’s GAS project whilst offering a fresh slant on that post-classical sound that’s so rarely executed with any originality…

A resident of Paris and a member of the city’s famed GRM, or Groupe de Recherches Musicales institution, Kassel’s meticulous methods of microphone placement create fragile, or metastable sonic ecologies with acute attention to the filigree balance of tones…
HOLY STRAYS
Enlightenment
NOT NOT FUN

Flipsude ‘Phrenesia’ is a moodier counterpoint, sucking us in with wormholing synthline…

Fonal
7″ // £5.99

Elegiac electronic forest folk from the magnificently monikered Jarse aka Jari Suominen, known for his work with Shogun Kunitoki and Kiila. ‘Alas’ plays through as one track (although it was split over two sides on the original 7″), sweeping us from lightly dissonant 8-bit C64 melodies to more sumptuous orchestration of layered guitars, lapping rhythms and arresting vocal drops interspersed with stunning synth flourishes. It’s a fragile balance of Fonal’s…
MARCONI UNION
Beautifully Falling Apart (Ambient Transmissions Vol 1)
JUST MUSIC
CD // £9.99

Sumptuous session of frayed acoustic instrumentation and vastly spacious electronics from the consistently lovely Marconi Union duo. ‘A Lost Connection’ is their fifth full album together, and ventures further into the tenderly blissed soundscapes best heard on their fine releases for Bine Music. Lovely new single from Mount Kimbie, backed with new tracks and remixes from Peter van Hoesen, Klaus, and Airhead. ‘Carbonated’ was one of the standout tracks on the last album, with its flickering 2-step rhythm under dainty melodies in a baroque Bass ‘n Soul style similar to recent Zomby moves, whereas new track ‘Flux’ is more smudged and aquatic with a free-formed arrangement akin to an abstracted Falty DL cut,…

What’s this – Brian Eno making dubstep and techno?!! OK, it’s only a clutch of tracks that could possibly be described as such, but believe us when we say that Drums Between Bells, Eno’s new album on Warp Records, is a significant departure from last year’s Small Craft On A Milk Sea. IAN MARTIN
Intensions
FURTHER RECORDS
CD // £6.99

‘Intensions’ is an isolated deep space electronic drift suite by Rotterdam-based artist, and DJ for Intergalactic FM’s Sinister Echoes & Exotic Realms (SEER) show, Ian Martin. Ian’s music has previously appeared on CDrs for Legowelt’s Strange Life organization and Bunker Records, so you should have some clue to the references for this album. To us, it’s a bleakly alien descent into gurgling and droning electronic synthesis, sinking deep into scenes…
EKOPLEKZ
Live At Dubloaded
FURTHER RECORDS
Cassette // £6.99

*Limited edition Cassette version* Wicked slab of avant-Dub doings by Ekoplekz, captured last year at his debut live set for Bristol’s Dubloaded. The entire 45-minute set is spread over two sides, no gaps or nuthing. Much like charming platters for Mordant Music and Punch Drunk, all the music is improvised, deploying an array of cheap effects units and synths to create something quite deliciously spaced-out, lo-fi and inimitably intuitive. NARKI BRILLANS

Alga Marghen
LP // £16.99

**Highly enigmatic mixture of avant-garde pop collaging and electronics originally released on cassette in 1981. Sounds sort of like Lee “Scratch” Perry jamming with Wevie Stonder at times, and just plain inexplicable at others. Also features pictures of a baboon’s arse with ‘Narki Brillans’ tatooed across it on the centre labels. How can you resist?** “A mysterious 1981 cassette masterpiece from Narki Brillans (The Homosexuals) from the It’s War Boys…

Cassette // £5.99

*Edition of 100 wrapped in beautiful embossed white card inner* Daren Ho follows some very cool releases as part of Cuticle (with Glamorous Pat Maherr and Nimby) and Mandelbrot & Skyy (with Jeff Witscher), with something more indecipherable for Root Strata. Working alone as Driphouse, Daren creates an oddly alluring simulated space where stray layers of bloopy modular synth zig-zag across more placid, reflective piano notes and crooked arpeggios stumble…

FURTHER RECORDS
Cassette // £6.99

Seattle’s Further Records keep up a cracking run of releases (Conrad Schnitzler, Ekoplekz, Vagon Brei) with the ‘Urantia Project’, a previously unreleased Jamal Moss session recorded in 1996 and intended as a demo for Relief/Transmat/R&S/Warp – none of whom would pick it up. Firstly, it’s great that someone has finally had the sense to put some Jamal Moss productions on the format most suited to his fidelity: cold, thin, cassette…
ROEDELIUS
Wie das Wispern des Windes
Bureau B
CD // £11.99

This one just fluttered through an open office window…a reissue of Hans-Joachim Roedelius’ six solo piano improvisations from 1986. Touchingly dedicated to his mother, ‘Like The Whispering Of The Wind’ is a luxurious suite of performances produced at his home and a friend’s house in Vienna between 1983-85, and includes ‘Beneath Blooming Trees’, a cut from a live performance at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London in 1985. Lush.
AMON TOBIN
Surge
Ninja Tune
12″ // £5.99

Superb single taken from Amon Tobin’s ‘Isam’ album, backed with a Two Fingers mix, a radical Emika version and dextrous 16Bit mix. The original furthers his fascination with dynamically arranged concrète and foley sounds, resulting in an impressive juxtaposition of electrifying timbres, textures and acousmatic sounds formed into a frictional 2 minute maelstrom. The Two Fingers mix strafes away slightly from the avant-garde to the dancefloor, prepped with plummeting subs…
DAVE.I.D
Response
K7
LP // £18.99

Robust debut album of electro-fired Rock music from Dave I.D. ‘Response’ is polished to a shiny gnarl, fusing seared guitars and twisted synths with noisy drums indebted to Dubstep. You’re probably not going to dance to this unless you’re a bit of a tit, but it’s definitely one for the slightly more advanced rocker.
LARSEN
Cool Cruel Mouth
TIN ANGEL
CD // £12.49

Torino, Italy’s Larsen quartet engage with legendary crooner Little Annie and pianist, Baby Dee for their ninth studio album, entitled ‘Cool Cruel Mouth’. As versatile as ever, their music here is imbued with their signature cinematic intentions and attention to textural details. Little Annie makes distinctive appearances on six of the nine compositions, lending her cracked and deeply evocative timbres to an opening cover of the classic ‘It Was A…

Spectrum Spools
LP // £14.99

*Black Vinyl Edition* **Heady album of synth exploration from Temporal Marauder, new on Spectrum Spools, the Mego offshoot curated by Emeralds’ John Elliott!** While the majority of SS releases thus far have tended towards the whooshing, new age end of kosmische, Temporal Marauder dares to traverse more hostile and troubling terrain. While there are some nice arpeggiated ragas on offer in the time-honoured German style (‘Llissa’s Lament’, ‘I Saw You…

They’re all remastered, but still trustingly swaddled in tape noise, texturing his often sad, simple songs with a…
RICHARD YOUNGS
Amplifying Host
Jagjaguwar
LP // £11.99

**Includes digital download code redeemable from the label** Amplifying Host finds Richard Youngs wandering the guitar desert somewhere between Ry Cooder’s Paris, Texas score and Neil Young’s work on Dead Man. Yet, the randomly determined chord movements and Young’s stretched-out vocal passes across this record are, perhaps, more akin to Jandek’s Six And Six – here, removed from its gauze and dipped in a dark gold. When Youngs bends string…

NAT BALDWIN
People Changes
Western Vinyl
CD // £11.99

“Double bassist/singer-songwriter Nat Baldwin’s album ‘People Changes’ is much like the stark Maine setting in which it was created. Of course, his fourth full-length shows welcome markings of his experimental bent from years as the Dirty Projectors bassist and former disciple of free jazz legend Anthony Braxton, but the serene isolation of 17 million acres of New England forestland make this cabin-born set intimate and sincere. It’s easy for Roedelius releases to get lost at the moment in the flurry of re-issues and Cluster-related titles, but this little gem is a record that deserves a closer look. Streamline
CD // £10.99

Impressively expansive 48 minute suite of floating symphonic ambience. The fourth fully released album by Nicholas Szczepanik works deeper into the beatless scapes he’s perfected over the last half decade with releases on Small Doses and Ruralfaune among others, opening out his widely spatialized drones and sweeping strings with a confident and refined touch underlined by a gorgeous cinematic intent.

NO PAIN IN POP
7″ // £5.49

Gauzy shoegaze loveliness from Echo Lake, following a lush debut 12″ from earlier this year. There’s only two tracks this time, and they’re both really sweet. ‘Lovely Day’ is the upbeat, catchy number drenched in echo for lo-fi but widescreen effect, and ‘Breathe Deep’ is a fine homage to Cocteau Twins, powered by slow radiant drum machine patterns and dramatically layered vocals.

The Beta Band, Hot Chip, Clor and Badly Drawn Boy are all obvious touchstones for Diagrams’ combo of hook-laden, heartstring-tugging songcraft, elegant chamber instrumentation and quirky electronics. ‘Hills’ is an instant winner, whimsical but tightly controlled in a Talking Heads sort of way, with colliery brass parping and synths squelching across an…

Pumping big-room House roller backed with a slinkier Reboot remix. The original is built pumping-strong for the chuggy Ibiza crew, while Reboot adds a shiftier layer of latin percussion to loosen the hips.

**The official soundtrack for Wim Wenders’ 3D Pina Bausch documentary. Features music by Cujo (Amon Tobin), Benjamin Britten, Jun Miyake, Thom Hanreich and more, pressed on 180g vinyl** “The soundtrack ‘Pina’ portraits a cross-section of the musical variety in this movie. BUFFET CAR ATTENDANTS
The MMs Bar Recording
Trunk Records
LP // £10.99

*Edition of 250* ‘The MMs Bar Recordings’ is a continuous collage capturing announcements from the buffet carriage, Coach F, on the Midland Mainline trains between London and Leicester. It’s also one of the funniest records we’ve heard in ages (yes, we don’t get out very often). Sandra Cross made this journey weekly between 2006 and 2007 and endeavoured to record these helpful announcements whenever she got on to the train….

PYE CORNER AUDIO
Volume 2: Do You Synthesize?
FURTHER RECORDS
Cassette // £6.99

*Edition of 100.* ‘Black Mill Tapes Volume 2: Do You Synthesize?’ is the first Pye Corner Audio release available beyond the artist’s own underground channels (aka his website). His spellbinding works, now numbering two whole tapes, are spoken about in hushed tones by Moon Wiring Club, Ghost Box crew, Simon Reynolds and The Wire, and it’s very easy to hear why. His music occupies that liminal nether zone at the…
DON GERE
Werewolves On Wheels
FINDERS KEEPERS
LP // £13.99

**Includes lucubrate liner notes by Andy Votel – Frighteningly heavy lysergic country and mean motorik jams from 1971, best summed up by Demdike Stare’s Sean Canty as “Pre-certified biker psych from the hillbilly Haxan. Amazing!”** “B-movie junkies, gather round and prepare yourselves for what could only be described as a cinematic speedball. Take a combined hit of two of the most potent strains of toxic cinema, dress it up in…

BELLE & SEBASTIAN / COLD CAVE
Come On Sister (Tony Doogan Mix) / I Didn’t See It Coming (Cold Cave Mix)
Rough Trade
12″ // £4.49

Rough Trade serve Richard X, Tony Doogan and Cold Cave remixes of tracks from B & S’s ‘Write About Love’ album, plus an exclusive original new song ‘Blue Eyes Of A Millionaire’. The group’s producer, Tony Doogan does a canny indie-disco take of ‘Come On Sister which sounds so strangely like a downpitched, Stockport-accented Leyland James Kirby if you play it on 33 (check out his Domino radio show and…
JEFF & JANE HUDSON
Flesh (Expanded)
Captured Tracks
CD // £13.99

Originally appearing in 1983, Jeff & Jane Hudson’s ‘Flesh’ is somewhat indicative of the unsettlingly sexual industrial electronic music of its era. It’s called ‘Flesh’ for God’s sake – how much more of a hunt are you gonna need? But it doesn’t stop there, the rolling Chris & Cosey-inspired proto techno rhythms are drenched in the kind of sweat you only really find in room full of writhing bodies. It’s…

TONES ON TAIL
Weird Pop
Beggars Banquet
2LP // £13.49

“Tones On Tail was a musical side project created by Daniel Ash of Bauhaus along with artschool friend / flatmate Glenn Campling in 1982. After the breakup of Bauhaus in 1983, they were joined by drummer Kevin Haskins. Their music was described by one critic as “doom-and-dance pop”. The band disbanded in 1984 shortly before Ash and Haskins went on to form Love And Rockets. As is the case with…
DRUMS OF DEATH
Black Waves EP
CIVIL MUSIC
12″ // £9.99

Civil Music present the first brand new material from Drums Of Death since the debut album nearly 12 months ago. Still riding the rave beast, hard, ‘Cold Lazerus’ gallops out with hair-raising saw tooth synths and swing kicks, while ‘Lost Highway’ leans back for a cooler slowfast bounce with arcing blue synth-pop motifs. If you’re only going to nab one track, the rave vamps and cold subbass drops of ‘I…
FREE SCHOOL
Ranting And Raving EP
TIRK
12″ // £5.99

Tirk’s latest additions are a pair of Birmingham-based producers named Free School. Their full debut for the label is a subtly uplifting piece of motorik Balearic disco, floating in with the Kosmische lean of ‘Ranting And Raving’, and the twinkly pastoral groove of ‘Lemon’. Richard Norris’ Space And Time Machine chime in with an extended remix of ‘Ranting And Raving’, expertly balanced with layers of rolling conga and slowly rising…
SUN AIRWAY
Wild Palms / Symphony in White, No. 2
Dead Oceans
7″ // £2.99

Sun Airway’s first new material since their ‘Nocturne Of Exploded Crystal Chandelier’ is upon us. There’s a distinct trace of chilled, wavy ’80s pop seeping into their sound here, blended succinctly with an accomplished songwriting talent.

NKC
The Pyramids EP
Forefront Recordings
12″ // £5.99

First spotted on a cool white label for Awkward Movements, NKC drops a bulky load of Grime-laced Funky on Forefront Recordings. The label’s last release, Slackk’s ‘Synthetics’ is hands-down one of the releases of 2011, and to be fair, this one isn’t so far behind. With a similarly potent brew of kinetic Grime agility and rolling Funky suss, NKC dips from the relatively nice and breezy House jaunt of ‘Partisan…
AND
Algorythmic Love EP
Project Squared
12″ // £6.49

Manchester’s freshest Techno unit diverge into more scuffed and broken structures, backed with a smart Tom Dicicco remix for Furreshu. ‘Algorithmic Love’ is a firm nod in the direction of T++, Surgeon and those Techno operators who can read outside the linear 4/4 lines, building a robust yet twitchy swing joint from booming bass and grazing, strafing hi-hat/snare syncopations. On a more Dubbed-out pivot, ‘Brother From Another Mother’ rolls off…

K7
2LP // £18.99

*Now available on vinyl with 10 cherry picked tracks from the CD version.* **Includes download coupon for all tracks, redeemable from the label** K7! present ten choice unmixed selections of deep end House, soul and cosmic jazz taken from Motor City Drum Ensemble’s DJ-Kicks Mix. For the House heads you’ll find classic material such as Peven Everett’s ‘Stuck’ and the broken flex of Isolée’s remix for Recloose’s ‘Cardiology’, plus a…
MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE
L.O.V.E. (DJ-Kicks) EP
K7
12″ // £6.99

MCDE presents two exclusive cuts priming the scene for his DJ-Kicks mix. They’re typically Bass-sunken and deeply soulful burners, featuring a full blown vocal on the original ‘L.O.V.E’ factored over disco claps, a standardly warm and fluid bassline and rich Rhodes vibes. ‘Basement L.O.V.E’ even more Theo Parrish-like, from the authentically dusted drums to the haze of keys and potently smoky atmospheres.
PSYCHOLOGIST
Propeller EP
Not Even
12″ // £5.99

Curious 2nd single from Iain Woods’ Psychologist alter ego, intended as the conclusion to a two part set with his debut ‘Waves Of OK’. In comparison with its predecessor, the ‘Propellor EP’ is far more electronic, deploying really heavy subbass sounds and spare but bruising drums. The minimalist pop drama and lavish bass of opener ‘Out, Damned Spot!’, reminds of moments from the Various Production catalogue, while elsewhere you’ll come…
REFERENCE / OLIVERWHO FACTORY / VARIOUS
Detroit Nu.Wav
Planet E
12″ // £8.99

Planet E represent four relatively New Skool production units from Detroit: Reference, Oliverwho Factory, Monty Luke and Ezana Harris. A-side Reference unleashes the epic, piano-lead peaks of ‘Another Place’, while Oliverwho Factory serve the bitchy and muscular jackslap of ‘Jealousy’. B-side, Monty Luke cruises to the sophisticated, synths driven glide of ‘Futura’, and Ezena Harris gives the old skool sounding Hi-Tech Jazz shake of ‘I Am Ready’.
THE PARALLEL
Cosmic Observer EP
KOMISCH
12″ // £5.99

Excellent 2nd outing of fresh but very classic-sounding Techno on Komisch for The Parallel, undoubtedly one of Ireland’s most promising new Techno producers. The longer A-side contains the quicksilver motions of ‘Exosphere’, a pure and slickly produced rut of high quality 4/4 runnings. Flipside ‘Deep End’ rides fathoms below powered by plush, cushioned kicks and heady, swirling chords, while ‘Analogue City’ serves an iced finish of beautiful Detroit-gazing Techno.

OWINY SIGOMA BAND
Tafsiri Sound
Brownswood Recordings
12″ // £6.99

Quantic, Jesse Hackett and Hello Skinny follow Theo Parrish’s lead to brilliantly remix cuts from the excellent Owiny Sigoma Band album. Destined to be in much demand, Quantic rebuilds ‘Doyoi Nyajo Nam’ as an infectious Afro-Funky heater with rippling dub chords and deft drum edits a la Altered Natives. On a cooler tip Owiny Sigoma Band instigator, Jesse Hackett aka Elmore Judd and guitarist for Gorillaz, gives Margearet Okudo’ a…
