Hello,

Noise titan Pete Swanson is making some of the best music of his career right now, and ‘Man With Potential’ finds him heading off into destroyed techno territory. By placing more emphasis on nuclear powered pulses, his harmonised distortion sounds more reactive and forward looking than ever, fitting in with that new school of demented and deconstructed Techno which has surfaced from the likes of Container, Diamond Catalogue and KPLR in recent times. 500 copies only on this one with a bonus 50-minute CD of extra material included – fans of vintage Regis, Prurient/Vatican Shadow or Kevin Drumm need to check in!

Over at the other end of the warehouse, Patrice & Friends is an alter ego for the rogue, boogiefied Footwork productions of Slackk and his pals. Their debut collection liberally deploys debonaire R&B samples over ruff-cut and Grimy rhythms in deadly style, making most other assimilations of this sound seem too polite and pedestrian by contrast. It’s a majorly FUN listen, spanning 22 rapid and hugely infectious cuts for those who know, and doubtless a big recommendation!

Sticking with the Chicago theme, but on a whole other level, Hieroglyphic Being presents one of his most crucial records to date, a 45-minute 12″ on France’s Audiomer imprint. ‘Les Jardins Des Chemins Bifurquants’ takes his Sun Ra influences to dizzying new heights of advanced, intuitive techno-jazz, recalling the work of Conrad Schnitzler with spiralling analogue electronics.

And for something more conventionally funky, Boo Williams’ seminal ‘Home Town Chicago’ is an essential pick for the true-skool Chi-heads, delivering eight inimitable, timeless grooves which have hardly been more relevant since their original release.

‘Shadows’ is the excellent new release by Floating Points. Still shy of a debut album proper, it comprises his most substantial body of work to date, taking in five tracks of deadly, swinging drums, cosmic funk and synthesised soul – limited copies for the swift fingered!

Into more extreme arenas, Hecker presents another demented side of psychoacoustic sorcery with a double 10″ release breezily titled ‘2/8 Bregman 4/8 Deutsch 7/8 Hecker 1/8 Höller’. It comprises eight shorter experiments of Shepard Tone manipulations, simulated spatialization and dynamic repetitions which simply sound like nobody else on the planet, bar maybe his allies Russell Haswell, Marcus Schmickler or Yasunao Tone. 500 copies only, highly recommended!

Also for heavier heads, Throbbing Gristle’s reissue scheme arrives at ‘Heathen Earth – The Live Sound Of T.G.’, on limited edition vinyl with large format 8-page colour booklet, or sublime double CD that includes a whole disc of bonus material, all remastered by Chris Carter.

Zambri are one of the brightest additions to the parallel/unterpop realm occupied by everyone from Zola Jesus to Autre Ne Veut. Their debut single is a beguiling and deeply spiked peach, drawing on the same source of ’90s R&B drama as their close ally ANV, and morphing it off kilter for a discordant ambiguity we can’t get enough of. For fans of Water Borders, Ecotplasm Girls, ANV or Salem, it’s a surefire recommendation.

Elsewhere, drone and minimalist heads should look out for John Chantler’s endearing experiments on his boutique Inventing Zero imprint. He offers two longform tracks made on modular synth and two organs respectively. There are 110 copies for the world, housed in gorgeous silk-screened jacket and individually signed by the artist.

And for the connoisseurs, Serge Gainsbourg’s ‘Histoire de Melody Nelson’ arrives as a definitive, deluxe 2CD & DVD set including alternative takes and unreleased tracks and the original album on 5.1 surround sound. For fans of gallic pop and outright classic music – it’s a must.

On smaller formats, Ghost Box return with a spacey collaboration between Pye Corner Audio and The Advisory Circle, but If you’re itching to dance there are some proper aces to shout about, including Theo Parrish on Sound Signature, a mighty new 12″ from Factory Floor (their first for DFA) and Silent Servant with a powerful slab of Techno on Sandwell District. Darling Farah, meanwhile, follows up his immense ‘Exxy’ 12″ with another brilliantly judged fusion of Tech-House, R&B and 2-Step for Civil.

Also out this week, new releases from Eprom, the Fear Ratio, DVA, Bangs & Works Vol.2, Elijah & Skilliam, Nonplus, Sepalcure, Horsepower Productions, Biosphere (deluxe, limited vinyl edition of the wonderful N-Plants album), Nicolas Jaar, Steve Hauschildt, Marcus Schmickler, Calexico, The Soft Moon, Mint Julep, Marcel Dettmann, Mike Huckaby, Maya Jane Coles, Villalobos, Skudge, Dimlite, Onra, Author, Numbers and a bunch of T-shirts from Ghost Box, Unknown to the Unknown and L.I.E.S.

Have yourselves a fabulous week…

Peace! nekkers…xx

PETE SWANSON
Man With Potential
ELECTRONIC
Type
LP+CD // £14.99 *Limited edition vinyl pressing cut by Rashad at D&M, includes a bonus 50 minute CD “Man With Garbage* It’s been an amazing year for deconstructed, f*cked-up and destroyed Techno, often emerging from the most unlikely sources. This new album from Yellow Swans’ Pete Swanson certainly falls into that category, but might just be the most shocking and exquisitely demented offering of its kind, sounding like a cross between Aphex Twin, Regis, Prurient and Kevin Drumm – with all the brilliance those names suggest. On these tracks he continues to mine beneath the topsoil of the American noise scene into a more delirious, deafening style of bunkered Techno sharing much in common with Prurient’s Vatican Shadow. His finest solo side in years, ‘Man With Potential’ feels to be a logical progression from last year’s ‘Going Places’, exploring deeply routed ley lines of steam-powered machine rhythm and mind-burrowing distortion towards an innately unnatural conclusion. After an introductory acid bath cleanse, opener ‘Misery Beat’ soon tangles into a primal take on Regis’ foundry-beaten 4/4s lashed by howling, demonic noise, before ‘Remote View’ gazes over nuclear-blasted synth pads and acid-ravaged Tech-noise pulses, and ‘A&Ox0’ creates an effluent channel of beaten-down bass and acrid, needling noise harmonics. Flipside, the brittle hypertension of ‘Far Out’ is enough to draw blood from your nervous, chewed lips, while the title track methodically planes any remaining, blistered flesh from the surface with layers of abrasive texture until he’s reached the skeletal baroque noise bones of ‘Face The Music’. And that’s only the vinyl! Any healthy ears will be primed for the sweltering interrogations of bonus CD ‘Man With Garbage’, comprising his c20 tape ‘Challenger’, the mauling Afro-noise shapes of ‘Return’ and his trial by submersion ‘Self-Help’. You’ll need to brush your teeth twice after this – it’s just so damn f*cked.

FLOATING POINTS
Shadows
BEATS / DOWNTEMPO / BOOGIE
Eglo Records
2×12″ // £15.99 *Strictly limited copies – Ships Friday* What’s this? A five-track EP from Floating Points?! This is probably the most substantial and also darkest FP dispatch to date, and though a couple of numbers have been kicking around on dubplate for a while, it’s good to have all in one place and sounding this spruce. ‘Myrtle Avenue’ is an out-and-out epic at 10 minutes long, using the time to go super-deep; it’s fundamentally a stripped house groover, but with clustered drum-swing and warm, boogie-funked keys very much in the vein of Theo. It really goes at its own pace and is unpressured by the demands of the dancefloor, and is undoubtedly one of the most mature Floating Points productions to date. ‘Obfuse’ goes for a more minimal, broken flex, scuffed 808s underscored by discreet, cosmic-tinged synth patterns. ‘Realise’ takes things into more UKG territory, at least rhythmically speaking; again, though, its the sophisticated, sombre synth arrangements that snag you. ‘ARP3’ is pacier, a sensuous techno track that feels like a more melancholy cousin of ‘Vacuum Boogie’. ‘Sais”s moody keys and suavely bruk beats bring the EP to a triumphant climax, sounding like a sleep-deprived 4 Hero jamming with Tangerine Dream.

PATRICE & FRIENDS
Cashmere Sheets
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
SULK RECORDS
CD // £4.99 Patrice & Friends is an alter ego for the indomitable Slackk and his undisclosed pals flexing their Footwork hyper-soul. ‘Cashmere Sheets’ comprises 22 tracks – the original 15 plus a bonus 7-track EP “Cashmere Offcuts” – and signifies the UK’s most fun contribution to the ongoing dialogue between the Bass scene and Chicago. Unlike, say Addison Groove or Kuedo’s takes on Footwork, the ruff-cut boogie sampling and flighty aesthetic of Patrice & Friends has much more in common with the OG Southside crews, mirroring their energy and flow with a hair-kissing sense of funk that can’t be faked. The source material is handled in a way that’s achingly well appointed, re-contextualising coked-up ’80s funk and R’n’B along futurist vectors unfortunately avoided by so many who’re content to rehash the same, “sophisticated” memes sans the energy or real-deal soul. There’s a classic double refraction of ideas criss-crossing the Atlantic at the moment, from DJ Manny & J-Cush sampling Wiley to the likes of Patrice & Friends spinning off Footwork, and no doubt, we simply can’t get enough. A massive recommendation!

HIEROGLYPHIC BEING
Le Jardin Des Chemins Bifurquants
ELECTRONIC
AUDIOMER
LP // £12.99 *Staggering, otherworldly works by Chicago’s infamous cosmic connector Jamal Moss on a 45 minute album.* The last 12 months have a seen a catalytic upswing in productivity from the man also known as Jamal Moss, during which time his work has appeared on labels beyond the Techno sphere, signifying acknowledgement by a far wider-reaching group of listeners. ‘Le Jardins Des Chemins Bifurquants’ is among the most spectacular of this recent batch, comprising two longform experiments of instinctive, astral-searching sonics aligning the themes of Sun Ra with the abstractions of Keith Fullerton Whitman and Conrad Schnitzler’s alien soundscapes. A-side ‘Rhythmes Circadiens’ sets an offworld nitescape of chirruping synthetic fauna and stunning darkside synth blooms which accumulate a rippling electro rhythm. B-side ‘The Garden Of Forking Paths’ is more contrary, detached, like Tangerine Dream meets Steve Moore at a deserted spacestation, an evolutionary trip of spooling modular tones and rusted noise with an untethered sense of imagination and exploration. For fans of his multifarious operations who’ve always wanted him to go one step beyond, this is a 100% essential purchase.

ZAMBRI
Glossolalia
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
KANINE
Mini LP // £12.99 *Comes with free tote bag and badge* Twin sisters Cristi Jo and Jessica Zambri have been stalking the peripheries of the unterpop radar for over a year now. Their first youtube video ‘From The Starts’ was one of our favourite new discoveries of 2010, hitting square between the eyes of equally dissonant buddy Autre Ne Veut, unheimlich hipster trio Salem and pop magpies, Gang Gang Dance. ‘Glossolalia’ is their 1st vinyl release and comprises five jolts from a very unique pair of pop glands, a finely assembled mass of unnerving hooks, haunted harmonies and bold electronic production. They make a supremely grand entrance with the futuR&B/noise chamber dynamics of ‘On Call’, riding a crest of swarming synth harpies and raging R&B drums, before the crafty key changes and ambiguous sweetness of ‘Heather’ shows a more subtle grasp of unsettling pop magic and ‘To Keep Back’ approaches The xx’s swooning ghetto-gothic romance from a sly angle. Turn over and ‘News’ – co-produced by Gang Gang Dance & Beach House’s Chris Coady – comes across like a more female, twysted, version of Water Borders’ syncretic gothpop, and we complete the cycle with ‘On Call (Biddibiddi)’, a more disturbed and nervy version of the EP opener. For fans of Tri Angle Records, Ectoplasm Girls, ANV, Zola Jesus or Salem this is nothing short of a must have.

HECKER
2/8 Bregman 4/8 Deutsch 7/8 Hecker 1/8 Hõller
ELECTRONIC
Presto!?
2×10″ // £18.99 *Double 10″ pressing – limited edition of 500 copies* There are few adequate phrases available to best describe Florian Hecker’s compositions. For Milan’s Presto?! Records, Florian offers eight typically uncompromising, intriguing and exciting works. The title ‘”2/8 Bregman 4/8 Deutsch 7/8 Hecker 1/8 Hõller’ “indicates the percental input of the eight pieces” and “intertwines practical, theoretical and conceptual proportions and its audible dramatizations”, taking inspiration from seminal texts by Diana Deutsch and Albert S. Bregman, and incorporating the work of his sometime ally, Carsten Höller on one piece. They deploy a range of psychoacoustic phenomena, exploring the very peripheries of sonic possibility and the listeners’ auditory perceptions with illusory sonic processes such as the Shepard Tone – a computer generated tone that continually ascends or descends in pitch, yet which ultimately seems to get no higher or lower – along with other, near hallucinatory processes of simulated acoustic spatialization. Two of the pieces feature diced vocal samples arranged in repetitious, stereo-strafing dynamics, while the rest are more concerned with Shepard tone manipulations and the kind of sonic trickery which feels like he’s actually inside your ear canal, conducting your nerves and sense of space and motion like a mad scientist. For want of a more specific word, they sound incredible. Definitely recommended for followers of Russell Haswell, Yasunao Tone, Peter Rehberg or Marcus Schmickler.

JOHN CHANTLER
Automatic Music
ELECTRONIC
INVENTING ZERO
LP // £15.99 *Individually numbered edition of 110. Housed in silk screen printed jacket made from archival grade photokraft paper. Signed by the artist* John Chantler resuscitates his long dormant Inventing Zero Records to present two highly endearing experiments with modular synth and organs. The first is a fantastically curious and playful side entitled ‘Automatic Music For Erik Griswold’ and was recorded in Bundaberg, Australia, in late 2010 using a Eurorack modular synthesizer plugged into a guitar amp. The title is a nod to the Brisbane resident and pianist whose ‘Wallpaper Music’ partly inspired the work, while the piece itself is focussed on glassy timbres and queer, groaning bass sounds which occur in fluid waves of stunted rhythm with a strangely organic nature. It feels lo-fi and quite ancient yet with an alien, chattering quality. The other side features ‘Unknown Season (Mute The World)’, another longform piece this time made with two organs (a Honher and a Busilaccio) recorded to 1/4″ reel-to-reel. Intended as homage to Jim O’Rourke’s ‘Two Organs’, John patiently shapes wavering chords into tenderly sustained drones, flowering hypnotic harmonies which lap at the ears and could happily go on for twice the duration. A sincerely lovely record, recommended for lovers of Lawrence English (who mastered the record), or Fennesz, Jim O’Rourke, and Oren Ambarchi.

BOO WILLIAMS
Home Town Chicago
TECHNO / HOUSE
ANOTHER DAY
CD // £8.99 Seminal Chicago House music reissued for 1st time – and long overdue it is too. Boo Williams needs little introduction to the world’s House cognoscenti: his 40-odd releases for the likes of Relief, Guidance and Ovum have established him as a master of deep, slinky, jackin’ Chi-Town grooves. His 1996 side ‘Home Town Chicago’ was his second album release and contains eight definitive tracks of sophisticated, hardware-honed club music – the sort which still provides all night nourishment and inspiration to dancefloors from Berlin to Miami every weekend. The highlights here are almost too many to mention. At the top there’s the deep blue, cruising title track and the deftly hypnotic ‘Devil Muzik’, while ‘Make Some Noise’ is a masterclass of instinctive, swinging House knowledge. Best of all is ‘Lazy Mood’ a subtly gripping lesson in the art of easy-rolling hypnosis, before the set rounds out with the stealthy developments of ‘Old School Flavour’ and the bumpty special ‘Evil ways’. Simply, for the DJs at least half of these are stone cold club aces. Tip!

SERGE GAINSBOURG
Histoire de Melody Nelson (Deluxe 2CD & DVD)
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
Universal
2CD+DVD // £11.99 **Deluxe 2 CDs with alternative takes and unreleased tracks. Plus a DVD with an exclusive documentary and the album in 5.1 surround sound** This is one of those records that really defies a quick write-up – it’s regarded as Serge Gainsbourg’s definitive work, and is often cited as one of the very finest albums ever made. Telling a Lolita-esque tale of morally… dubious romance, Histoire Melody Nelson takes a format that deviates somewhat from a conventional concept album – it’s short, clocking in at under twenty-eight minutes, and often returns to themes established earlier on in the work. In addition to the Jane Birkin duets, Gainsbourg is joined by another notable collaborator: Jean-Claude Vannier deserves a great deal of credit for the way this album turned out: he co-wrote much of the music alongside Gainsbourg and conceived the incredible orchestral and choral arrangements. One of the true all-time greats, comes with full lyrics and a reproduction of a 1971 interview with Gainsbourg.

PYE CORNER AUDIO WITH THE ADVISORY CIRCLE
Study Series 07: Autumnal Activities
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
Ghost Box
7″ // £5.99 Pye Corner Audio has been operating under cover of darkness for some time now, and headed up by the mysterious Head Technician, has released two fabulous full-lengths showcasing his knack for spacey, Radiophonic production. It was surely only a matter of time before Ghost Box would nudge in for a look, and here we see Mr. Technician accompanied by the very good Advisory Circle for an excellent new 7”. The A Side’s my pick of the bunch and finds the Head Technician working alone on a downtempo number not unlike Andy Stott were he transported to the late 1960s. Classic BBC sci-fi tropes swirl over a clipped, sludgy beat in a perfect introduction to the Pye Corner Audio sound – it’s still dance music somehow, just… err… different? It’s ‘Cloud Control’ on the flip side where Advisory Circle gets his hands dirty, and this is a more obvious reference to the televisual treats of old with brassy synthesizer sounds and clanging bass giving and almost Jarre-like flare to proceedings. This classy little 45 might just be my favourite from the Ghost Box label to date and shouldn’t be missed under any circumstances!

SILENT SERVANT
Hypnosis In The Modern Age
TECHNO / HOUSE
SANDWELL DISTRICT
12″ // £5.99 *Limited first edition on white vinyl in reverse card sleeve with A4 insert* Sandwell District’s LA ambassador returns to the label with two tripping Techno inductions. ‘Mad Youth’ conducts disciplined electronic voodoo on the A-side with layers of acidic synths, roiling, rolling bass and widescreen atmosphere to own the ‘floor. Flipside, the outward energy is inverted into ‘The Self’, holding and sustaining a sci-fi Millsian tension akin to his recent soundtrack efforts or moments from his SITS series. Excellent.

THEO PARRISH
S.T.F.U.
TECHNO / HOUSE
Sound Signature
12″ // £8.99 Limited, blink-and-miss drop from Theo on his Sound Signature imprint. As you might guess from the title, ‘Shut The F*ck Up’ is one of his grimier, more rugged productions, cutting out any bullsh*t for a bare bones MPC and synth jam in two versions. On the longer session he lets rip with gritty, downslow, jazz-timed rhythms synced to a snaky, ranting acid sequence in a cryptic, esoteric dialogue on dancefloor physics and Afro-futurism. Flipside he reigns himself in for a shorter version concentrating on swaggering drum fluctuations and that abstract acid chat. Basically, it’s sounds like nobody else out there. Don’t sleep…

FACTORY FLOOR
Two Different Ways
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
DFA
12″ // £6.99 Enigmatic post-Industrial dance unit relocate to DFA for their strongest single to date. With ‘Two Different Ways’ they’ve isolated the classic body control of Nitzer Ebb, DAF or Chris Carter and tweaked its functions to an irresistible degree. Mechanized Latin kink, hard-jawed snares and muscle-rippling acid lines sync and slyde against Nikki Colk nonchalant vocals and creaking industrial noises in the first mix, while the second tightens the flex for a more minimal, twitchy funk with jabbing electric stabs and rolling downtown congas dubbed for dark, amyl-clouded backrooms. Unmissable for those that know.

DARLING FARAH
Division
TECHNO / HOUSE
CIVIL MUSIC
12″ // £8.99 *Features MP3 download code redeemable from the label* Darling Farah (aka Kamau Baaqi) delivers a very eagerly awaited follow-up to his deeply infectious ‘Exxy’ 12″! It’s a genuine cause for excitement round these parts; we’ve been caning his last 12″ to bits and are in sore need of some newness, so this fits the bill nicely. Much like his last, there’s the finest traces of R&B/Garage swing, minimised Techno contours and BASS in the balance, all poised and pointed with a beautifully ethereal quality which pushes our buttons. A-side features the lean, muscular Dub-Techno throb of ‘Division’, operating somewhere between Mosca and Skudge, besides the neat dip and shimmy of ‘Grace’. Flipside, we’re just floored by the effortless simplicity of fluid, bare bones rhythm programming on ‘Foreign’, and the crisp syncopation of ‘Model’, like some more robust version of the feathered rhythms preferred by Guy Andrews or James Blake. Straight up TIPPED!

“Augustus Pablo is remembered as one of Jamaica’s most original instrumentalists and record producers. His innovations in bringing the melodica to reggae and the groundbreaking productions which followed place the keyboard player’s legend among the inventors of ‘dub’ reggae. ‘This Is Augustus Pablo’ from 1973 is the most famous collaboration between Pablo and producer Clive Chin and garnered the reggae classic ‘Dub Organizer’. PATRICE & FRIENDS
Cashmere Sheets
SULK RECORDS
CD // £4.99

Patrice & Friends is an alter ego for the indomitable Slackk and his undisclosed pals flexing their Footwork hyper-soul. ‘Cashmere Sheets’ comprises 22 tracks – the original 15 plus a bonus 7-track EP “Cashmere Offcuts” – and signifies the UK’s most fun contribution to the ongoing dialogue between the Bass scene and Chicago. Unlike, say Addison Groove or Kuedo’s takes on Footwork, the ruff-cut boogie sampling and flighty aesthetic of…
AUTHOR
Author
TECTONIC
CD // £9.99

A really confident, coherent debut album from Author, the duo of Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin. Dubstep is virtually an old man now, and yet you could count the number of memorable LPs the genre’s thrown up on one hand. Author’s effort attempts to redress this, offering up 10 tracks that are club-strength, but rich and musical enough to work as home listening too. The only real vocal track is the…

Planet Mu
CD // £10.99

As promised, Planet Mu juice out another 100% killah Footwork selection, following up one of THE best records of the last 12 months. Since the release of the last volume, it’s fair to say the meme has gone global thanks to contagion carriers such as µ fam’s Kuedo and Machinedrum, and no doubt the awesome tours by DJs Spinn & Rashad and their dancers earlier in the year. SCRATCHA DVA
Madness / Polyphonic Dreams
Hyperdub
12″ // £4.99

Re-calibrated Broken Beat/Funky transporters from Rinse FM’s much loved morning radio jock and Hyperdub’s most eccentric producer. Like the very recent effort from ally Cooly G, Hyperdub’s latest sees Scratcha at work with a more experienced hands, namely Gilles Peterson favourite and beat scene legend, Vikter Duplaix. Vikter contributes sweet, breathy soul vocals to a crookedly resolved triplet rhythm on ‘Madness’, a balance of ultra-sticky, synthetic acid melody and lushest…
GOLDFFINCH
Red Mask / Ovale
NUMBERS
12″ // £6.99

Funked-up ElectroTech from Belgian duo, Goldffinch, rolling right off their ‘Dirtybird’ drop for Airflex Labs. ‘Red Mask’ is an intensely taut and locked-on piece of dancefloor science, carving a fluid, frictionless groove from rolling, inter-locking synthlines and robust bass synced for bodily gratification. ‘Ovale’ is more reserved, working a jacked-up Electrobass sound powered by metronomic subbass throbs and stickier percussion. Test these on a big rig for optimal satisfaction.
ELIJAH + SKILLIAM
Rinse 17 Mixed by Elijah + Skilliam
Rinse
CD // £8.99

Ask anyone “who’s the best grime DJ on road?”, the answer will likely be Elijah & Skilliam. With their expertly-curated Butterz label and regular radio show for Rinse they’ve stirred up something of a resurgence of instrumental-lead Grime and given a solid base for new producers such as Royal T, Swindle and TRC to flourish besides scene veterans Terror Danjah & D.O.K., keeping the sound self-sufficiently underground and almost as…
DOUBLEHEART
Salsa Apocalypto
Nonplus Records
12″ // £7.49

Doubleheart is the tightly coiled sound of Neil Landstrumm and Optimo’s J.D. Twitch going about some shifty Latin Tech business. It’s a classy hybrid of conjoined sounds, mixing early rave flavour with a mechanized Latin tilt to arrive at something contemporary yet classically ‘floor oriented. ‘Salsa’ is the pick, arranging intricate, ‘floor-scuffing shuffles under ghostly rave signals and creepy bleeps with Landstrumm’s signature hardware tweaks on show. Flipside ‘Ache’ is…

ANTHEM TIMES! Champion finally unleashes one of summer 2011’s biggest hits, ‘Sensitivity’, backed with the boisterous ‘Tun Up Di Bass’. Fresh from distinguished appearance on Ben UFO’s Rinse mix and innumerable rinses at raves across the country, this Ruby Lee-starring ace is almost the perfect collision of R&B pop, roadwise Funky and Soundsystem dynamics, a poised balance of sweetened soul and irresistible, futurist funk which surely ranks in the finest…

GUY ANDREWS
Shades / Textures
Hemlock Recordings
12″ // £6.49

Stripped down and optimised future Bass musics from Hemlock’s newest signing. Here, Guy Andrews successfully follows the trajectory taken on his Discobelle release, acting like a more melancholy counterpart to the brittle syncopation of Joe or the Jazz/IDM-inflections of Four Tet and El Kid. A-side ‘Shades’ bears a structural influence clearly inherited from more post-rock-y headspaces, but with meticulously calculated beat programming and breakbeat funk dynamics akin to Anstam. B-side…
HORSEPOWER PRODUCTIONS
Good Ole Dayz / Justify
Tempa
12″ // £5.99

Tempa’s most enduring outfit follow up the ‘Lost Tapes’ EP and last year’s ‘Quest For The Sonic Bounty’ LP with two rare-grooving, cinematic steppers. ‘Justify’ deploys dusted jazz percussion with film dialogue and moody atmospheres for something like a take on Peshay’s mid-period stabs at jazzy D&B. Flipside is moodier yet, with the loose jazz drums and tense, noirish vibes of ‘Good Ole Dayz’.
SP:MC & LX ONE
Hunted / Oh My Gosh
Tempa
12″ // £5.99

Minimalist halfstep dread from two Youngsta faves, SP:MC and LX ONE. That’s gotta be either Kiefer Sutherland or Vin Diesel on the intro for ‘Hunted’ and either way it sets the testosterone levels simmering for a proper darkside stepper’s special. Keeping the pressure gauge ticking, ‘Oh My Gosh’ tucks the menacing funk deep into a swaggering Hip Hop/Halfstep killah.
TRUTH & DECODA / TRUTH & DUTTY RANKS
The Emperor / Calling You Back
Wheel & Deal Records
12″ // £6.49

The recently prolific Truth trio arm up with Decoda and Dutty Ranks on a pair of dynamic, harder edged dubstep ruts. With Decoda they’re on a Distance-style vibe, all mountain carving guitar drops and implosive halfstep rhythms, whereas ‘Calling You Back’ with Dutty Ranks is more inverted, triplet driven and crafty.

First plate deals with the tough stuff – Icicle rolls out the deadly drum programming of ‘Alien Groove’ while Friction & K Tee lock into the surging synthlines of ‘Jupiter’. Second plate is more liquid, coming with Spectrasoul’s lean stepper ‘The Gift’ and the plush D&B soul of Alix Perez, Rockwell and Spectrasoul’s ‘Montpellier’ featuring a whiffy…
