Hello,

Pairing up the vanguard of avant dancefloor electronics, the SND & NHK split on PAN has completely owned our week. On the A side you’ll find the first SND material on wax since 2010, and a mighty session at that. Still leagues ahead of the game, it’s a 15-minute masterclass in ultra-funked, minimalist electronics. Over on the flip, NHK deliver some of their deadliest material with four tracks of crushing, dextrous Techno with a proper attitude. Limited edition 140g white wax in silk-screened PVC sleeve with artwork by Kathryn Politis and Bill Kouligas. These are gonna fly…

From the contemporary vanguard, to the vintage; Daphne Oram’s legacy is firmly acknowledged on the long-awaited deluxe 2CD edition of ‘The Oram Tapes: Volume One’. Sourced entirely from previously unheard archives entrusted to Goldsmith’s College in London, this two hour collection asserts the Radiophonic Workshop founder’s rightful position as one of the most important figures in modern music and comes with the highest possible recommendation for fans of electronic music of any description. Oh, and it comes housed in a gorgeous, oversized 8-panel digifile with phogtographs and liner notes.

Staying with the sublime, Mirroring is the musical pairing of Liz Harris (Grouper) and Jesy Fortino (Tiny Vipers) for Kranky. On ‘Foreign Body’ their analogous aesthetics meld into a beautiful collection of hazy, evocative songs – a massive recommendation for fans of folkwise, ambient drone pop. Further out there, Black To Comm offers his most beguiling work to date, on the esteemed De Stijl imprint. Based around a score to Ho Tzu Nyen’s film EARTH, it features the criminally unsung talents of vocalist Vindicatrix set against minimalist folk-drone arrangements occupying space between Talk Talk and Fennesz in sublime fashion.

Meanwhile, Bristol’s Subtext label comes into its own with a genuinely weighty 12″ from speaker-shuddering duo, Emptyset. On ‘Medium’ they make use of the natural reverbs at a gothic mansion to imbue their sound with spacious psycho-geographic qualities which manifest with intensely visceral charge. It’s essential listening for fans of Raime, Pan Sonic, Roly Porter and Mika Vainio.

Wolfgang Voigt’s incredible ‘Rückverzauberung’, meanwhile, has completely floored us – it’s just some of his strongest material since the seminal GAS records, and if you know what that means we don’t need to elaborate.

And on the ‘floor, Mr Beatnick unleashes debonaire rare groove modernism on the ‘Sun Goddess’ EP, while 2562 brilliantly switches tack on the ‘Air Jordan’ 12″; Xander Harris and Dylan Ettinger amp up killer NRG disco and insidious cold wave; and DRMCNT makes his mark with the outstanding ‘Gangsigns EP’ – crossing boundaries between Drexciyan Electro, Grime and Techno with effortless swagger.

Also out this week: Kyle Hall spreads his Wild Oats imprint with a beautifully realised reissue of Anthony Shakir’s ‘Westside Sessions’ as Da Sampla from 1997 on a screenprinted 12″ and 7″ pack with his own edit and locked grooves, Food Pyramid’s ‘Mango Surprise’ swings from jazz-dubbed KrautHaus to ambient dancehall jams, while new releases from Juk Juk, Pearson Sound, The Host, Airhead, Brainmath, Photek & Pinch, Helix, Martyn, Tectonic, Konntinent, Spectrum Spools, Merzbow, Peter Broderick, Bvdub, Aybee, Battles, Lando Kal, Soundway and much much more round off another crazy week.

Oh – PARTY alert! We’ve got tickets on sale for a very special event on Good Friday, 6th April starring a live performance from Shackleton and a rare exhibition of work by Woe To The Septic Heart! and Skull Disco sleeve artist, comic book designer and top bloke, Zeke Clough. It’ll take place at the charming Q Cavern in the heart of Manchester city centre and the first 50 tickets will be redeemable for a special gift on the night!

Have yourselves a fabulous week…

Peace! Nekkers..xx

SND/NHK
Split
ELECTRONIC
PAN
LP // £9.99

**Limited edition 140g white vinyl housed in silk screened PVC sleeve with artwork by Kathryn Politis & Bill Kouligas. Mastered and cut by Rashad at D&M** The vanguard of contemporary avant-dancefloors share a KILLER split for PAN on this limited edition pressing that will no doubt disappear in a flash. Most notably, SND’s side ’15/16′ is their first material on wax since the hugely sought-after ‘4,5,6’ triplepack in 2008 and their crazy limited pressing for DS93 back in 2010. Mark Fell and Mat Steel conduct a side-long session of convulsive, jacking electronic funk with inimitable timing, always working to the slightest off beat with meticulous, grid-teasing drum placements pivoting around slyding, strafing chords in jaw-dropping, body-owning style. It’s just 15 minutes of pure A-grade material from two of the most interesting, ambiguous producers in electronic music. On the flipside, Tokyo/Berlin’s NHK aka Kouhei Matsunaga and Toshio Munehiro work together for the first time since the ‘Special’ 12″ on Important Records and cycle thru some of their best work to date, inclusing nervy Dub on ‘Fu2’, crushed Techno on ‘111230_2ndhalf’ and rhythmic noise on ‘Hydra’, finishing off with the standout stretch of swaggering digital f**kery on ‘Stomp_1’, sounding like something off a lost Gescom EP circa 1998. Killer killer wares from PAN, no messing.

DAPHNE ORAM
The Oram Tapes: Volume One (Deluxe 2CD Edition)
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
Young Americans
2CD // £15.99

*Deluxe 2CD edition comes in an oversized 8-panel digifile* Two years in the making, this 37 track deluxe 2CD edition features two hours of previously unreleased recordings from Daphne Oram’s archives. None of this material had been available until the quadruple vinyl edition appeared late last year and is now available on this beautiful double CD edition, compiled and restored from over 400 tapes and mastered at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Daphne Oram, founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, died in 2003 leaving a colossal archive of reel-to-reel tapes and documents behind. This important collection of material eventually made its way to Goldsmiths College, London, who have been administering it on behalf of the Daphne Oram Trust for the last few years. The collection holds over 400 tapes made by Oram during her lifetime, and 211 of those have been archived and catalogued by the college so far. “The Daphne Oram Tapes: Volume One” is the result of almost two years spent trawling through the archive in an attempt to piece together a coherent document of one of the most pioneering and genuinely experimental characters in electronic music history. Although some of Oram’s recordings have surfaced on the “Oramics” compilation, this set reveals a much more complex, dark, sometimes disturbing and often beautiful body of work which has, until now, been partially obscured by the more recognisable Radiophonic bleeps and whirrs the Workshop is best known for. This first volume focuses on Oram’s love of experimental forms, of Musique Concrète, of the science and mystery of sound and composition. It comes at a time when her work is only just starting to gain wider acknowledgment in scholarly as well as popular circles. The “Oramics” machine (the first electronic musical instrument in history to be designed and built by a woman) has gone on display at the Science Museum in London, an important step in what will no doubt be a sustained effort to assert Oram’s rightful position as one of the most important figures in modern music. The set reveals a wealth of musical treasures that include recordings and sound effects made for ‘2001’ and Jack Clayton’s “the Innocents”, all the way through to field recordings made in Africa. This first volume, put together with the help of Goldsmiths and Daphne’s family, is the first in a planned series that will, for the first time, make Oram’s most important and personal recordings available for public consumption.

MIRRORING (GROUPER & TINY VIPERS)
Foreign Body
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
Kranky
CD // £11.49

Amazing album of diffuse, DIY drone-pop from two doyennes in the field: Liz ‘Grouper’ Harris and Jesy ‘Tiny Vipers’ Fortino. The material featured on Foreign Body is every bit as subdued as its creators’ respective solo work, but the collaboration is more than sum of its parts: Harris’s searching, poetic command of reverb is as distinctive and quietly overwhelming as ever, and she sculpts gorgeously murky, sylvan atmospheres for Fortino to set her more traditionally folk-influenced vocal performances and finger-picked guitar lines in. The song-based compositions are incredibly affecting, but arguably the duo soar highest when exploring more pensive instrumental shades, as on ‘Cliffs’ and ‘Mirror Of Our Sleeping’, the latter most strongly reminiscent of the minimalist direction Harris has been taking Grouper has been taking recently, with an elegiac drift that reminds us of both David Sylvian’s ambient work and Aphex’s SAW II. Really, it’s that good: a majestic work from two artists at the top of their game.

DA SAMPLA (ANTHONY ‘SHAKE’ SHAKIR)
Westside Sessions
TECHNO / HOUSE
WILD OATS
12″ + 7″ // £18.99

**Red 12″ and black 7″ housed in screen-printed paper sleeve and poly bag with A4 insert** Wild Oats deliver a crucial doublepack from Anthony Shakir as Da Sampla, comprising a reissue of his sought-after ‘M3 Sessions’ released through Detroit’s Record Time in 1997, plus an archival find and KMFH dub on the 7″! In recent years Shake has rightly received the adulation he was long overdue and it’s records like this that exemplify his unique stature in the pantheon of influential 313 greats. On the remastered 12″ new and younger heads will discover the ‘floor-werkin’ filters and flying 909 hats of the Pursuit Mixes 2 & 3, beside the jerkin’ rudeez ‘Over’ and ‘Track 4’, while old heads can refresh their (naturally) battered copies. The 7″ offers a nutty Latin looper ‘G.J.’ “Sampled Normalized and Aligned by Da Sampla” and backed with Kyle Hall’s skeletal, but big-boned 808 Dub of ‘Frictional Beat #6’, both replete with useful locked grooves. So good!

BLACK TO COMM
Earth
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
De Stijl Records
LP // £14.99

**Includes MP3 download voucher redeemable from the label** Astonishing new album from Marc Richter aka Black To Comm on Minneapolis’s ever-reliable De Stijl, featuring vocals from the fascinating Vindicatrix. As boss of the Dekorder label, has introduced to an astonishing array of quality artists over the years, but his own music is beginning to eclipse his estimable A&R skills. The long-awaited follow-up to 2009’s Alphabet 1968 LP on Type, this new album is based on an original score he created for Ho Tzu Nyen’s film EARTH. There’s no doubt that it’s his most ambitious work to date, with deliciously woozy, woe-stricken vocals courtesy of Vindicatrix – impossible to hear without thinking of Scott Walker, David Sylvian or Antony Hegarty – at the fore of minimalist, electronics-daubed drone-folk arrangements that occupy a hallowed space somewhere between Talk Talk and Fennesz. It’s really that good, conjuring a truly epic sadness but providing enough sonic nourishment that the tears feel like a good thing. The second half of the record heads deeper into loop-based abstraction, climaxing on the 15-minute ‘The Children’ but those lachrymose vocals remain – and the combination is just sublime.

FOOD PYRAMID
Mango Sunrise
ELECTRONIC
Moon Glyph
LP // £12.99

**Edition of 500. Includes download code redeemable from the label** Moon Glyph Records keep it local with the mighty debut album from Minneapolis trio, Food Pyramid. From jazz-dubbed KrautHaus to ambient dancehall jams, their sound is cosmically free and steeped in myriad modes of psychedelic sonic transport intended to crack your head wide open. They’re equally comfortable deploying downslow, Sun Araw-like blow-outs such as ‘Burger Night (Version)’ as they are howling glam Techno stompers ‘I know What I Saw’ and Balearic acid rock psyche-outs nodding to Drexciya and Suicide on ‘Oh Mercy’, recklessly crossing boundaries and styles with deeply learned and coherent vision. ‘Mango Sunrise’ is a truly striking side, and should be strongly recommended to fans of Rangers/KWJAZ or Steve Moore and wide-eyed Krautrock/Disco/Dub hybrids of all stripes.

EMPTYSET
Medium
TECHNO / HOUSE
Subtext
LP // £6.49

Ambitious set from Bristol’s foremost avant-techno operators Emptyset, for which they wrenched themselves out of their urban studio bunker and into Woodchester Mansion in Gloucestershire. This imposing, rurally-set building is an incomplete remnant of the Gothic revival, and there can be no doubt that it brings a grand, ghostly resonance to Emptyset’s rumbling sonic investigations. Setting up their analogue gear on-site, the duo proceeded to subject the mansion’s irregular spaces to extremes of bass and feedback, treating it not just as an immense echo chamber, but almost a third member, one capable of inscribing its unique architecture onto the foreign sine waves sent its way. The resulting work is an inspired communion of sound and architecture; it feels like an exploration of both physical and psychic space, possessed of energies and implications that defy easy explanation and so take on an occult charge. The project was supported by the Woodchester Mansion Trust, and renowned Bristol engineer Mat Sampson managed the vast array of vintage microphones and preamps distributed about the building, as well as the central monophonic sound system. The finished release is comprised of five long pieces, presented on both CD and limited vinyl 12″ with a special poster of analogue-processed imagery by Clayton Welham and Sam Williams. Meditations on bass weight rarely come this, er, weighty, and we’d call it essential listening for fans of Pan Sonic, Roly Porter, Raime, Sunn 0))) and Monolake.

MR. BEATNICK
Sun Goddess EP
TECHNO / HOUSE
DON’T BE AFRAID
12″ // £6.99

Taking inspiration from classic rare groove Boogie and Detroit House, the dangerously underrated London tunesmith drops his most impressive 12″ to date. Picking up from the deepest strains of last years ‘Synthetes’ ace (one of Fact Mag’s top 50 tracks of the year), he delivers dusted Rhodes and warmest, Theo P-esque strings and bassline on ‘Sun Goddess’, beside the Kassem Mosse-gone-Balearic vibes of ‘Beneath The Reef’. Flipside he’s in a friskier mood with the tight Boogie-Tech shimmy of ‘Shifting Sands’, primed to work it from Panorama Bar to Plastic People, while ‘Savoir Faire’ tips out on classic-sounding Gallic deep disco vibe. Premium wares, you’re definitely going to be hearing lots about this one!

WOLFGANG VOIGT
Rückverzauberung 6
ELECTRONIC
Magazine
12″ // £10.99

Breathtaking new compositions by one of Germany’s most venerable producers. Keener heads will recognise the title ‘Rückverzauberung’ from Kompakt’s recent ‘Pop Ambient’ edition, and these are essentially three spectacular, further versions on that theme. It opens in resplendent fashion to ‘6.1’, a sombre, sepulchral piece of sonorous bass precipitating haunting celestial chorale which could easily be mistaken for a darker Arvo Pärt piece. We could almost imagine this being released on ECM. ‘6.2’ follows in a more abstracted vein, those choirs swept with slivers of harpsichord across the stereo field to beguiling, wonderous effect. And those hankering for his signature kickdrum are granted manna in the form of ‘6.3’, a colossal piece of 4/4 suffused with stratospheric drones. They don’t come as good as this very often these days…

2562
Air Jordan
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
WHEN IN DOUBT
12″ // £7.99

Air Jordan’ is 2562’s unpredicted sidestep into bold, and compelling new territory. His untouchable feel for swinging rhythms and bass are still upfront, but it’s his choice of samples and textures – taken from field recordings made in Jordan – which refresh his sound with a dry, dusty, mystically outernational aesthetic. ‘Solitary Sheepbell’ gives the first taste, with desiccated drum textures melted by fluid, almost radiophonic electronics in a style clearly reminding of Demdike Stare, or Nate Young’s amazing ‘Stay Asleep (Regression Vol.2)’, while ‘Desert Lament’ sustains the arid vibe, adding a gritty finish to his usually frictionless syncopation and fata morgana chord hovers. It all works best o’er on the flipside with swirling, itchy, sweaty atmospheres trapped and diffused from his sampler into ‘Jerash Hekwerken’, while ‘Nocturnal Drummers’ is an intoxicating, impressionistic simulation of afterdark dance rituals. Well recommended!

XANDER HARRIS / DYLAN ETTINGER
The Driver / Tipoff
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
Moon Glyph
7″ // £5.99

**Limited Edition of 500** Xander Harris and Dylan Ettinger carve up a killer 7″ on this moonlight rogue mission for Minneapolis-based Moon Glyph Recordings. For his best outing since last year’s acclaimed ‘Urban Gothic’ LP episode, Harris is evidently amped up for ‘The Driver’ with pedal-to-the-metal NRG disco rhythm outlined by frightfully effective synth stabs and cruising-at-100mph chords. Flipside Dylan Ettinger’s ‘Tipoff’ is a more insidious minimal wave gem. Throbbing, distorted, stoic bass anchors intense synthline modulations while a tormented voice yelps like he means it, making for an ominous, uneasy piece of synthesized drama.

DRMCNT
Gangsigns EP
TECHNO / HOUSE
GANGSIGNS
12″ // £5.99

Drmcnt comes to shake the House with his eagerly anticipated and waaay overdue debut 12″ for Gangsigns. His sound is favourably likened to a hybrid of UR’s aqua-techniques and Swamp81’s roost-ruling Bass styles – essentially a driving combination of deft machine programming with supremely optimised production. A-side ‘Work’ syncs jawside snares and wriggling acid with a shower Ghetto attitude, while the fierce ‘Oldschool’ is a stone cold knock-out, doing what Boddika or Instra:mental have been doing, but with younger, more supple muscle. Flipside, he triggers swollen Electro-Dub subs and clipped drum sequences for the steppers on ‘BDM’, next to the twysted Drexciya-gone-grime intensity of ‘Kindil’. A massive record – strongly recommended.

NOMOS
12″ // £6.99

Following a critically acclaimed debut for Four Tet’s Text label, Juk Juk inaugurates the Nomos label with these strange and dreamy dancefloor confections. Like the best of Kieran Hebden’s output, Juk Juk manages to weave disparate elements with an alchemists touch. A-side ‘Unwrap’ is a gently euphoric arrangement of tickled folk strings, elegantly insistent House/Electronic rhythms and the most curious cut-up vocal. Flipside, the delphic soul of ‘Fall’ hits a…

LEFT BLANK
10″ // £7.99

**Black label wax housed in hand-stamped paper sleeve** Left_Blank spread their wings to Russia with the 2nd vinyl release by 23 year old enigma, Myown. Much like his debut for Anton Zap’s Ethereal Sound imprint, and in keeping with his new home’s explorative aesthetic, the ‘Vesna’ EP exhibits a convoluted, hyper-structured fusion of dark 2-step, Electronica and House. He takes this to its logical limits with warped Garage contours infused…

R&S Records
10″ // £6.49

Stylish return for Airhead on R&S, one which finds him stepping out from under the shadows of James Blake, Mount Kimbie et al and making his own estimable contribution to the gauzy post-dubstep. If shoegaze and post-rock were always palpable influences on his sound, on ‘Wait’ they’re pushed right to the fore – hell, there’s guitars all over this thing, at moments sounding recalling the chiming minimalism of The xx,…

Monstruous riddims from the two-headed beast of Photek and Pinch. To be honest, the new Photek productions haven’t been doing much for us, but this is a different story entirely. Working with Bristol bassbin soldier, Pinch, he tunnels heads-down into rolling, tranced-out Acid House formations built for the big rooms on ‘M25FM’, while Pinch’s dubplate version of ‘Acid Reign’ alloys virulent 303 sequence with hulking dreadnought bass waves to crushing…

Kryptic Minds, who’ve done as much as anyone to preserve the founding essence of dubstep come correct again with their cinematic opener, ‘The…
PEARSON SOUND

PEARSON SOUND
12″ // £6.49

Pearson Sound launches a self-titled imprint with the sought-after ‘Untitled’ backed with an exclusive new cut, ‘Footloose’. The tightly coiled drums and inflated subs of the former have become something of an anthem ever since it was premiered on The Boiler Room, and will only appear on this physical format (no digital) for those that need it. Flipside ‘Footloose’ steps back into a B-More sound, chopping up tidy breakbeats over…
AUNTIE FLO / PEARSON SOUND
Auntie Flo Remixed
Huntleys & Palmers
10″ // £8.99

Pearson Sound, SOPHIE and Alejandro Paz remix Auntie Flo’s anthemic cuts from last years two Huntleys & Palmers releases. Remixing ‘Oh My Days’ Pearson Sound deigns for a reduced an bass-heavy re-tuck focussing on the tight, skippy percussive lilt and bumping subs whereas Alejandro Paz takes a fruitier, more melodic route with charming results. However, the standout cut no doubt belongs to SOPHIE, a mutual friend of the label who…
RADIKAL GURU
Babylon Sky (RSD / Killawatt / Hatti Vatti Mixes)
Moonshine Recordings
12″ // £6.99

Rootsy dub remixed by RSD, Killawatt and Hatti Vatti. Frontside Rob Smith turns ‘Babylon Sky’ into a galloping stepper with Irish/Jamaican (???) vocals from Cian Finn. Flipside Killawatt serves an orthodox Dubstep version of ‘Dread Commandments’ and Hatti Vatti gets involved with a darker 2-step remix of ‘This Applies’.
SLEEPER AND DISTRICT
Terraformed EP
Chestplate
12″ // £6.49

Robust, real-skool Dubstep from two Chestplate rookies. Both District and Sleeper made their debut on the label in the last 12 months. Together they’re a force to be reckoned with, from the strongback 4/4 stepper ‘Terraformed’ on the frontside thru the guttural halfstep of ‘Zero Day’ on the flip.

Evolve Or Be Extinct
Big Dada
3LP // £14.49

No rest for the wickedest – Wiley drops his 2nd album for Big Dada only 6 months after his ‘100% Publishing’ episode! Again, it’s almost an entire gesamtkunstwerk; with the exception of a Mark Pritchard beat on final cut ‘This Is Just An Album’, Richard Cowie accounts for all production and lyrics, and let’s be fair, you wouldn’t expect any less. ‘Evolve or be Extinct’ is already being touted as…

From jazz-dubbed KrautHaus to ambient dancehall jams, their sound is cosmically free and steeped in myriad modes of psychedelic sonic transport intended to crack your head wide open. They’re equally comfortable deploying downslow, Sun Araw-like blow-outs such as ‘Burger Night (Version)’ as they are…

Rückverzauberung 6

We could almost imagine this being released…

It’s the follow-up to his ‘Opal Island’ LP of 2010 and was recorded in the “mad London heat of summer” in the same year. ‘Only Daughter’ opens the album with spiralling synth arpeggios wrapped in a cosmic helix to guitar playing reminding of Emeralds Mark McGuire, and…

Spectrum Spools

If you’re ever going to literally judge an artist by their name, now is the time. Spectrum Spools proudly present the highly anticipated vinyl debut of Derek Gedalecia’s Head Boggle project. After laying down the groundwork with releases on a stack of cassette labels, his eponymous long player is a disorienting, meticulously thunked-out manifestation of his far-reaching acoustic/electronic research; a febrile mass of sounds captured, triggered, played and edited with…

*Limited second edition – pressed on grey vinyl and including a bonus 50 minute CD “Man With Garbage* It’s been an amazing year for deconstructed, f*cked-up and destroyed Techno, often emerging from the most unlikely sources. ASC & SAM KDC
Decayed Society
Auxiliary
CD // £7.99

The first CD release on James “ASC” Clements’ Auxiliary imprint is a beatless ambient collaboration between him and Sam KDC. It’s a rare instance for two producers so deeply embedded in the D&B scene to depart from their beats, but a feat which these two are clearly capable of executing. Essentially it’s as though they got to the end of a typical atmospheric D&B intro and wondered what would happen…

If you know him from the ambient guitar works on 2009s ‘The Ridings’ 2CD or early releases on Misplaced and Hibernate, this album may come as a shock – but let’s be fair, there’s only so much soporific ambience a man can take before he’s driven to the eternal…

Flipside ‘Splinter’ is a more elusive groove, finding a mercurial, slinky syncopation between desiccated 2-Step beats and sub-heavy, bleeping Electro rollidge.
AYBEE

DEEPBLAK

Deepblak’s first entry for 2012 is a mellow, three track Deep House trip from label head, Aybee. Eyes shut, fingers walking, he cruises across the ethereal groove ‘No Fiction’ to the grainy, intoxicating Dub House swagger of ‘Ether’ on the A-side. Turn over and ‘Kommands’ communes with ruder outside styles, perhaps unconsciously referencing offset UK Techno styles with grubby acid bass and splayed, swinging drums in headgone, 5am fashion.

STILLCOLD RECORDS
12″ // £6.99

*Strictly limited to 300 copies, mastered and cut at Dubplates & Mastering Berlin* Lando Kal whips out two forward Garage/House grooves for nascent, London-based imprint, Stillcold. Frontside ‘TMRW’ swings with iced-out melodic timbres, Jersey-indebted rhythms and cooing R&B vox in a sheer, refined hyperspace. Flip it for ‘No Newjack’, a nastier slice of robotic percolations for sleazed-up cyborgs and gyrating gynoids.
DJ DRUZZ VS. OMEGA MUS
Apeman EP
THRONE OF BLOOD
12″ // £7.99

Beast of a 12″ from Gabriel Andruzzi, the bloke behind DFA darlings The Rapture. It’s practically worth it for the two A-side tracks alone; the badass NY House swagger of ‘Apeman’ and those cuckoo sounds on the genetically modified ‘Bohemian Groove’ mix by Jokers Of The Scene and Renaissance Man. Turn it over and you get the spaced out and haughty shunt of Monty Luke’s remix plus the deeper grooving…
FRIENDLY FIRES
Hurting (C2 Mix)
Planet E
12″ // £8.99

Carl Craig serves two sleek edits of Friendly Fires’ ‘Hurting’ on Planet E. The fruity original works elements of Toro Y Moi’s ‘Lissoms’ and backing vocals from the Harlem Gospel choir into a crossover indie disco special produced by Paul Epworth. These edits afford a sleeker version with plush, slowbuild vibes at a debonaire 107bpm for the pouting posse.
HOUSEFACTORS
Housefactors EP
Black Market
12″ // £8.99

Reissue of a jackin’ ’88 House bomb, remastered and re-edited by Larry Heard in 2012. There’s no messing with any of these cuts, from the throbbing square bass and bitch-slap claps on ‘Play It Loud’ to the demented, cut-up and freakin’ B-side aces ‘Freestyle’ and ‘Go Crazy’. A must for dancers and DJs.
KEVIN SAUNDERSON FEAT INNER CITY
Future (C2 / Kenny Larkin Mixes)
White Label
12″ // £7.99

One of House & Techno’s most influential units – Kevin Saunderson, Ann Saunderson and Paris Grey aka Inner City – regroup for 2012, presented here in remixes by C2 and Kenny Larkin. It’s a big room session brimming with real Detroit soul, from C2’s slowbuild symphony of keys and positive gospel vox over to Kenny Larkin’s creeping filter vibes and those killer staccato vocals.
MIKE DEHNERT / ROMAN LINDAU / SASCHA RYDELL
Fachwerk EP (Two)
FACHWERK
12″ // £7.99

Solid showing from Fachwerk’s core crew. Mike Dehnert plays it coolly reserved with the sleek square bass-ed TechnoHouse groove ‘M10’. Roman Lindau lends two of his sub-heavy and hypnotic rollers ‘Grow’ and ‘Under Pressure’, while Sascha Rydell commands the useful, tucked-in swing of ‘When You Play It’ for the DJs and dancers.
PEPE BRADOCK
Pistes Insolites Vol. 3
Atavisme
12″ // £9.99

Reissue of two sterling workouts by France’s freakiest House producers. Originally released in 2008, the 3rd volume in his ‘Pistes Insolites’ series offers the head-swimming filter treatments and frayed Detroit beats of ‘Mandragore’ on the A-side and an epic, far-out tale called ‘Hints Of Delusion’ on the flip featuring lyrics by Mark Gonzales set to swirling symphonic samples, bumped drums and an all-pervading sense of strangeness. Ace!
PURESQUE
Leitmotiv
Tresor Records
CD // £9.99

Puresque posit their sleek debut album of ‘floor focussed productions on Tresor. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, ‘Leitmotiv’ contains ten elemental Techno grooves plus two scene-setting beatless compositions. Both ‘Spinnenwabe (Album Edit)’ and ‘001A’ from the preceding 12″ appear, alongside some proper aces such as the churning, concrete-dusted ‘Reederwerk’ the jaw-clenchingly good ‘Saebelrasseln’, the Norman Nodge-like ‘Salamander’ and trippy atmospheric epic ‘Tagtraumer’.
SCRIMSHIRE
Everything You Say feat. Heidi Vogel (LV Mixes)
Wah Wah 45s
12″ // £6.49

**Hand-stamped white label** ‘Everything You Say’ rubbed-up by LV and Scrimshire himself for a limited edition remix 12″. London-based trio LV see their first remix action following last year’s much loved ‘Routes’ album for Keysound, bumping Scrimshire’s soul burner with richer subs and hovering chords for the ‘floor, instrumental included. Scrimshire’s own Dub masterfully renders the tight Latin percussion and horns to body-gripping effect.
TEVO HOWARD
Monument EP
BUZZIN’ FLY
12″ // £5.99

Subtly kinked and exotic-flavoured Chi-House winners from Tevo. The title cut’s a simmering brew of loose but tidy machine rhythms and dinky melodies designed to hook you in and keep you begging for more when its over. Flipside the finely tweaked acid shuffler ‘Conditional Love’ flows almost seamlessly into ‘The Wind Of The World’, nudging the drum sequences into body-seducing patterns over roaming bassline and mind-wandering melodies.
