Hello,

Glowering at us from the corner, Ingenting Kollektiva’s ‘Fragments Of The Night’ is a deeply impressive, dark and absorbing debut album from a mysterious group of Ingmar Bergman and Sven Nyqvist obsessives. They’ve concocted a seriously brooding and meticulously crafted tapestry of electro-acoustic neo-classicism that’s strongly recommended to fans of The Haxan Cloak, Kreng or Svarte Greiner. Only 545 copies on this one, housed in a lovely gatefold sleeve.

After what seems like a bit of a wait, Vatican Shadow’s ‘Iraqi Praetorian Guard’ finally arrives on Blackest Ever Black, toughened by a magnificent Regis remix plus two of VS’s earliest productions. Limited initial copies with full artwork in an LP-style sleeve.

Fennesz, Jim O’Rourke, and Peter Rehberg, meanwhile, reprise their Fenn O’Berg project for another effortlessly killer album for Editions Mego. You’re never going to be able to sum up their sound in one go, so suffice to say that this one is as diffuse, complex and inquisitive as improvised electro-acoustic music gets.

Laurel Halo also returns this week with her debut release as King Felix for Mute’s newly minted Liberation Technologies offshoot. Motor City techno is built from a modern perspective and warped with fractious Footwork and mid-’90s inspirations to surreal, hyper-simulated/stimulating effect. Comes housed in a custom die-cut sleeve – strong recommendation!

Electronic auteurs abound this week, from Die Schachtel’s immensely lavish and expansive 6CD + book box set cataloguing obscure Radiophonic works from Italy ‘Prix Italia and Radiophonic Experimentation’ to the final, beautiful Conrad Schnitzler album ‘Endtime’ and the Stephen O’Malley-curated Ideologic Organ’s issue of Akos Rozmann’s deeply abstract and mystical ’12 Stationer VI’.

This week also sees the release of the debut album from Orcas, a new collaboration between The Sight Below’s Rafael Anton Irisarri and Benoît Pioulard. It’s far more song-based that Irisarri’s usual output, and more layered, textured than Pioulard’s, arriving at a stately juncture that’s bound to appeal to fans of Gas, James Blake or Peter Broderick.

And if that’s all a bit high fallutin’ for ya, check out ‘Da Mind Of Traxman’ for a dose of deeply funked-up Chicago futurism from an original Dance Mania head who’s still sparking his MPC with a jazzfunk flex for the dancers. It’s a strong look.

If you’re a follower of blunted R&B variants, from the Tri Angle crew to Clams Casino and Main Attrakionz, make sure to check out the incredible debut from Chicago’s Supreme Cuts. They offer up easily one of the most impressive new entrants to the increasingly indefinable bass music scene, working within similar parameters to James Blake, Clams Casino, or Holy Other (who he’s already remixed), but from their own distinctly abstract perspective.

Meanwhile, those with more exotic tastes should be drooling all over Paradise Bangkok’s lavish 1st 7″ release: two obscure and groovy Thai funk wonders selected by Chris Menist and Mai Saft. It’s likely you’ve never heard owt like them, and the packaging is just spot-on – only 500 copies of this beauty in hand-stitched and screen printed jacket.

Elsewhere, you’ll also spy impressive House variants from latest Tri Angle signee Vessel in his sleazy sci-fi guise, Panther Modern, plus classy Techno hybrids from Stroboscopic Artefacts’ bossman Lucy on ‘Banality Of Evil’, and a leftside “knackered house” swagger joint from Kansas City’s Huerco S. for fans of Andy Stott or NWAQ.

Also out this week: a much needed CD reissue of Julia Holter’s ‘Tragedy’ including extended versions and interludes missed from the LP, plus new releases from Synkro, Hyperdub, Swindle & Silkie, Dolphins Into The Future, Black Dice, Hush Arbors, Pelican, Kraftwerk, Trevino, Vakula, Midland, Slugabed, Concessionaries, Dat Politics, Iain Sinclair, Lando Kal and a whole ruck of reissues from William Basinski.

Have a fabulous, long weekend…

Peace! nekkers..xx

INGENTING KOLLEKTIVA
Fragments Of Night
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
INVISIBLE BIRDS
LP // £14.99

**Amazing album from this mysterious collective – an absolute must if you’re into The Haxan Cloak, Kreng, or indeed anything on the Miasmah label. Limited edition of 545 copies housed in gatefold jacket, includes a download code redeemable from the label** Inspired and long-in-the-making side of dark, brooding neo-classical meditations housed in a gorgeous gatefold sleeve. Ingenting Kollktiva is comprised of Diane Granahan, Kirston Lightowler, Tarrl Lightowler, and Matthew Swiezynski, and was made as a homage to the films of Ingmar Bergman and Sven Nyqvist – particularly their quality of light, sound, and atmosphere. ‘Fragments Of The Night’ is also a direct response to a number of recordings from 1969 – Miles Davis & Teo Macero’s ‘In A Silent Way’ & ‘Bitches Brew’, and Vashti Bunyan’s ‘Just Another Diamond Day’, to name just a few – and was recorded at the Lightowler’s barn during a christmas rainstorm in 2009. The result is a rich tapestry of sounds played out with bells, bowed tibetan prayer bowl, cello, field recordings, guitars, harmonium, nightingale device, portable 78 record player, psaltery, tenor sax and shakuhachi flute, later edited at Studio Oiseaux Invisible to create a stunning, haunting arrangement of sounds you never quite get the measure of. The recordings’ sense of space is just astonishing and meticulously crafted, bringing to mind the darkened visions of The Haxan Cloak, infused with an unstable quality which means you never quite know where the recordings will take you next…

FENN O’BERG (FENNESZ, O’ROURKE, REHBERG)
In Hell
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
Editions Mego
2LP // £19.99

Five fiery, extended, hugely absorbing pieces from the mighty Fenn O’Berg – the triumvirate of Christian Fennesz, Jim O’Rourke and Peter Rehberg, as you surely know by now – recorded on their 2010 Japan tour in Oita, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Nagoya. The effortlessness and assurance with which this well-travelled trio conjure different moods and sound-worlds – from inquisitive concrete and eerie drones to nose-bleeding power electronics and head-spinning out-rock is just incredible; moreover, every transition feels natural, there’s a great narrative skill at work. There’s also an abundance of hooks, whether the haunting – almost hauntological- synth overtures at the heart of ‘Omuta Fuji’ and ‘Concrete Onions’, Fennesz’s plaintive riffage cutting through the hard ice of ‘It Came From Nagoya’, or the various “cheeky samples” we’re told are lurking in the mix (happy spotting). Edited together by Jim O’Rourke at his Steamroom studio in Tokyo last year, and cut at D+M in Berlin, this is one of our favourite Fenn O’Berg releases to date; improvised electronic music honestly doesn’t get much better. A reminder, if it was needed, that these guys are on another level. So so good.

ORCAS (RAFAEL ANTON IRISARRI & BENOîT PIOULARD)
Orcas
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
Morr Music
LP // £12.99

**Includes digital download voucher with the full album plus two bonus tracks – redeemable from the label** Rarefied, dub-infused ambient pop from Rafael Anton Irisarri – aka The Sight Below – and vocalist Benoît Pioulard, author of several acclaimed albums on Kranky. For this collaborative work, which comes courtesy of Morr Music, they attempt to fuse traditional song-craft and post-minimalist composition, and make a terrific job of it. They named the project after the whale synonymous with America’s Pacific Northwest – “a methodical sea hunter that is also a totem of the open oceans’ expanse” – and it’s a fitting metaphor for their music, which is stately and beautiful but unafraid to bear its teeth. Recommended for fans of everything from GAS and Pan American to James Blake and Peter Broderick.

CONRAD SCHNITZLER
00/830 Endtime
ELECTRONIC
m=minimal
CD // £11.99

M=Minimal has the honour of posthumously releasing the final work completed by seminal synthesist, pupil of Joseph Beuys and founder of Kluster and Tangerine Dream; Conrad Schnitzler. Finished four days before his death in late summer 2011, ‘Endtime’ defines a seamless 36-track, 70-minute moire of pulses, blips, arcing tones and fluid synthlines characteristically devoid of simplistic melodic resolutions. Like the rest of his massive body of work, he imposes a stoically functional yet poetic form of grammar upon the cold abstraction of his machine’s vocabulary to convey its most honest revelations. He makes himself a conduit for the purest tonal expressions, punctuating clouds of pollutant bleeps with spiralling arpeggios, wrapping headstrong rhythms with instinctively modulated envelopes to interpret raw current how an astrologer would divine cosmic symbology. This symbiotic relationship is at the core of his singular and deeply influential oeuvre; few other musicians/electronic explorers have had the vision and dedication to bypass the ego in their art, the ability to yield themselves as such a pure transducer of ephemeral and esoteric information. If this is your first encounter with Schnitzler, it’s as good an introduction you could hope for, and should potentially inspire you to cycle backwards/forwards through his near infinite, inimitable soundsphere. And even if you’re au fait with Konrad, this will surely measure up as one of the most crucial, coherent episodes in his forty-plus year career. Highly Recommended.

DIE SCHACHTEL
Deluxe 6CD + Book Box Set // £59.99

*Lavish, epic 6CD/Book box set exploring the best radiophonic art realized by the RAI  (the National Italian broadcasting company) in the second half of the Twentieth Century, a homage to the Milan RAI Studio di Fonologia, the seminal electronic laboratory founded in the 1950’s and where all the featured works included were originally realized. Includes 5 hours of recordings, plus a 400 page book in English and Italian, packaged in a deluxe foil embossed box – a must for Radiophonic fiends!* After five years of intense, passionate and sometimes painful work, Die Schachtel (in collaboration with RAI) is proud to announce the release of the long-awaited massive Book+6CDs boxed edition dedicated to some of the most compelling Italian radio works which took part in the prestigious Prix Italia, a world-famous contest established by the RAI (the National Italian broadcasting company) in the early Sixties and still well alive today, aimed to award the best and most uncompromising audio-visual produced throughout the world. PRIX ITALIA offers a significant overview of the best radiophonic art realized by the RAI in the second half of the Twentieth Century, and at the same time stands as an hommage to the Milan RAI Studio di Fonologia, the electronic laboratory where all the featured works were originally realized. The set includes seven original radio plays – some of them previously unreleased – which entered the competition from 1961 to 1981, complete with two audio interviews to some of the participants. The works have been taken from the original RAI tapes, carefully restored and impeccably re-mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi, making them a splendid listening experience. The accompanying 400 pages book (in Italian and English) features seven essays written by some of the most prominent experts in this field, plus a long interview with Mr. Sermonti and the complete transcriptions (again in Italian and English) of all the featured works. Curated with passion and a painstaking attention to detail by Angela Ida De Benedictis and Maddalena Novati (authors of the celebrated New Music at the Radio and Nine Oscillatorsbooks, both devoted to the Rai Studio di Fonologia), the enclosed book take advantage of the impeccable English translation by Mr.Mark Weir and the fascinating (yet reader-respectful) design by Dinamomilano, making it an essential reading to understand in depth the musical and semiological aspects of these outstanding works, composed and realized by some of the greatest geniuses of modern Italian music.

TRAXMAN
Da Mind Of Traxman
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Planet Mu
CD // £11.99

Traxman, a Chicago House veteran with two decades of experience steps up to Planet Mu with a distinguished debut album of hyperkinetic Footwork soul. As a co-founder of Dance Mania’s Geto DJz clique, a member of DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn’s Ghetto Teknitianz, and arguably one of Footwork’s foremost architect’s thanks to his prototypical mixtapes, Traxman brings a learned soul-flow to the sound, at once deeply rooted in his home city’s heritage, and pushing the boundaries wide open. His choice of samples – from the Mizzell Brothers to Prince – are drawn from years of crate digging and lend his productions a rooted maturity which may connect with older Hip Hop, Funk, and Soul heads, yet not at the expense of his futuristic intent. His parrying stabs and double time, stop/start flows have the innate dexterity of a jazz head improvising for the dance, only his instrument is an MPC and the dancers wear trainers and baggy jeans, not zoot suits and spats.

AKOS ROZMANN
12 Stationer VI
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
Ideologic Organ
LP // £19.99

Christ almighty, this is a quite astonishingly special release, courtesy of Mego’s Stephen O’Malley-curated Ideologic Organ imprint. O’Malley has dug into the archive and come out with something which has completely rewired our brains and refreshed our ears: four extended recordings by Hungarian-Swedish composer Akos Rozmann. Having spent his young life immersed himself in classical training at the esteemed Bartok Conservatory and Liszt Academy, Rozmann (1939-2005) fell under the spell of electronics, and disavowed conventional orchestral work entirely, declaring that it “had no future”. One thing that did persist throughout his life was his spirituality, his Catholic worldview gradually ceding ground to the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism. The pieces featured on this release are excerpts from his monumental 12 stationer (12 stations), composed at the famed EMS studio between 1978 and 2001 as an interpretation of the Tibetan Wheel of Life, and they’re just incredible – works of concrete and electro-acoustic devotion that navigate serene harmony and furious abstraction with unbelievable passion and authority, bring to mind such greats as Messiaen, Parmegiani, Penderecki, Macchi, Stockhausen and of course Rozmann’s hero, Pierre Henry. “During his lifetime Rozmann never sought, nor did he win any mentionable recognition,” writes Mats Lindstrom in his accompanying notes. “As a true modernist, he didn’t compose with an audience or the critics in mind. His mission was to compose for the future. It was his conviction that the mystical energy for compositional work should derive straight from God.” Cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates+Mastering, this is simply an essential purchase for all serious fans of electronic music.

JULIA HOLTER
Tragedy (CD Edition)
ELECTRONIC
Night School / Leaving Records
CD // £10.49

*Now available on CD with extended tracks, interludes missed out from the LP and “a fuller representation of Holter’s original intentions”” *Quite honestly one of the best albums of any description in recent years, now out on CD* Julia Holter is one of the most singular female artists we’ve encountered from the current groundswell of American indies. Leaving Records is possibly an unusual home for her latest, but then again, what’s “usual” about Sun Araw, Matthewdavid or Dem Hunger? Her high concept fifth release, ‘Tragedy’ is based on the Ancient Greek play ‘Hippolytus’, and mixes elements of synth work with droning neo-classical strings, cloud-like ambience and dreamily surreal vocals, almost like an amalgam of Robert Ashley, Maria Minerva and Laurie Anderson. There’s very little else out there right now with this sort of ambition, and most importantly, such a shockingly effective sense of wonder. A stunning, stunning album and an absolute must regardless of the kind of music you usually listen to.

Singles of the Week

VATICAN SHADOW
Iraqi Praetorian Guard
TECHNO / HOUSE
BLACKEST EVER BLACK
12″ // £7.99

*A killer head-to-head between Vatican Shadow and Regis on Blackest Ever Black. Limited copies!* The impeccable Blackest Ever Black label presents a much needed vinyl pressing of two tracks from Vatican Shadow’s debut cassette release, backed with a mighty Regis remix. For anyone familiar with the original 2010 tape or mp3 release, we should say this record sounds radically different, thanks in no small part to a pedigree mastering to vinyl by Matt Colton at London’s Air facilities. The haunting synth washes, grinding bass distortion and chopper blades of ‘Cairo Sword Unsheathed’, and the subharmonic bass of ‘Gunmen With Silencer’ are illuminated with a cold hard light, while their physical shape feels viscerally intimated. Receiving another remix call-to-arms, Regis transforms ‘Church Of All Images’ from Vatican Shadow’s recently reissued ‘Kneel Before Religious Icons’ LP, adding another vividly compelling episode to his important cache. Unmissable.

KING FELIX (LAUREL HALO)
Spring EP
BEATS / DOWNTEMPO / BOOGIE
Liberation Technologies
12″ // £7.99

*Housed in die-cut jacket** Arriving to much hype and fanfare, Laurel Halo assumes the King Felix moniker to inaugurate Mute’s Liberation Technologies sub-label. The ‘Spring EP’ clears her cache of the last few years work, rending a dreamily synthesized fusion of Motor City memes, mid-’90s UK IDM and modern hyper-swerve with a post Ambient-Techno aesthetic. Of course, that sounds pretty freaking convoluted, but this really isn’t a simple sound; it is diffuse, kinetic and evocatively melodic, executed with a cool compositional skill which stands her aside from the crowd in a surreal, self-made hyperspace. The three versions of ‘Spring’ are subtly morphed simulations of the same elements – fluttering flutes, rippling machine pulses, wheezy synth fibrillations – manifesting as Dub-stepped swoon; 3am Motor city elegance; flickering Footwork frame rates; while the deeply contrasting ‘Freak’ enters carefully constructed Chamber-Ambient dimensions. This, and her reputedly “more human” LP recently announced for Hyperdub, should continue to establish King Felix/Laurel Halo as one of electronica’s most vital current concerns. Highly Recommended.

SUPREME CUTS
Trouble EP
BEATS / DOWNTEMPO / BOOGIE
SMALL PLATES
10″ // £11.99

**Limited edition of 500 with 10×10″ insert, sticker and download code redeemable from the label** Comin’ straight outta Chicago, Supreme Cuts offer up easily one of the most impressive new entrants to the increasingly indefinable bass music scene. Working within similar parameters to James Blake, Clams Casino, or Holy Other (who he’s already remixed), yung Cuts here has hatched something of an under-the-radar ace – considering the quality of his sound and the relative lack of attention it’s received to date. A-side we’re introduced to the lean dip of ‘Amnesia’, where mercurial 2-step rhythms glint under fractured vox and a brittle lattice of hyperreal softsynths, while ‘Fools’ dubs out bullet-timed bass and skeletal drums with holo-ed soul chorale. B-side, the skittish rhythms, plaintive keys and vocal stunts of ‘Fools’ sounds like James Blake remixed by Nowa Huta, and the crisp, tensile drum programming of ‘Issues’ strongly recalls Clams Casino’s clinical net-age Hip Hop contours. Amazingly strong debut – get in early, before this guy blows up.

LUCY
Banality Of Evil
TECHNO / HOUSE
STROBOSCOPIC ARTEFACTS
12″ // £7.49

Classy Techno hybrids from Stroboscopic Artefacts’ CEO. Accompanied by Roll The Dice on synthesizer, ‘Superior Orders’ sets the tone with a bloom of uncoiling metallic twangs, before ‘Stanford Prison’ pensively pushes into expansive and celestial Techno terrain. B-side ‘Milgram Experiment’ pirouettes to a looped baroque string refrain augmented by offset, oval bass rhythms in hypnotic form, leaving ‘Asch Paradigm’ to subside into murkier post-Industrial zones recalling the more esoteric output of DJ Skirt or Regis. Heavy.

PRASAI JAEKANKAEO / CHAMNAPA PETCHPALANCHAI
Mor Khaen Ha Khu / Lam Plearn Dok Koon Siang Khafn
WORLD
PARADISE BANGKOK
7″ // £10.99

**Limited, hand-numbered edition of 500 housed in hand-stitched, stamped and screenprinted jacket** Thailand’s Zudrangma Records fire up their hugely promising 7″ series with a reissue of two obscure syncretic funk wonders. Owned and operated by DJ/diggers Mai Saft and Chris Menist (compiler of the amazing ‘Thai Dai’, ‘Sound Of Wonder’ and ‘Raw 45s From Yemen comps), the label has previously bowled us out with their ‘Luk Thung’ and Thai Funk volumes. The goodies here are as compelling as anything from those records, both tried and tested on dancefloor at their highly regarded ‘Paradise Bangkok’ events in the Thai capital and Japan, Germany, UK and elsewhere. A-side Prasai Jaekankaeo’s ‘Mor Khaen Ha Khu’ features a heavy Afro-beat bassline and loose cowbells scorched with wayward horns and niced-up with the sweetest verses. To commonly perceived Western sensibilities, Chamnapa Petchpalanchai’s militant molam flipside ‘Lam Plearn Dok Koon Siang Khaen’ may initially seem deliriously out of tune, but the experience of this exotic shock sinking in is a pleasure in itself, and once it has, your fascination will be piqued and it’s hard not to come back to it again and again. So good…

PANTHER MODERN (VESSEL)
Panther Modern EP
TECHNO / HOUSE
Immerse Records
12″ // £6.99

**Hand-stamped white label** Panther Modern is the stealthier House handle for hotly-tipped Bristolian, Seb Gainsborough aka Vessel. His name is reference lifted from William Gibson’s ‘Neuromancer’ classic and that’s the setting we’d imagine these tracks to be played: in some red-lit Tokyo backstreet bar accessed by black steel doors and solely serving illicit pharmaceuticals. A-side ‘Howl’ opens with a minute of re-calibrating compressions before organising itself into a sleazy, swinging disco strut with narco- confident flair like some ruder adjunct to the more obvious (cheesy) House and Disco conventions emanating from his home city right now. Flipside ‘Pentimento’ locks on to a Motor City House groove coming from a similar outsider angle to, say, Morgan Geist or Recloose, balancing fruity synth funk with a bassier UK-styled vibe.

HUERCO S.
No Jack
TECHNO / HOUSE
Wicked Bass Records
12″ // £8.99

Deeply squashed and sensual House music from Kansas City’s Huerco S., heading up the Wicked Bass label’s 1st release. ‘No Jack’ is a crafty meeting of pitched New Jack Swing samples and the sort of “knackered house” vibes of Andy Stott or Duff Disco, set at a 105bpm swagger with heady filter treatments. ‘Bypass’ sticks with the sweltering, ’bout-to-collapse wooziness, reminding of ace NWAQ productions, while the impressionistic Chicago jack of ‘Untitled’ is condensed into a more potently emotive remix by one half of Sepalcure, Braille. Excellent.

SLUGABED
Sex
Ninja Tune
12″ // £4.99

Despite the title, Slugabed returns with quite a melancholy, slightly introspective slice of post G-funk. The real stand out is a phenomenally spacious rework from West Coast eccentric Daedelus, who makes the track even woozier and more introspective, then drapes it in reverb and sickly female vocals. The end result could rightly be called Lynchian – when the doo-wop break drops in the middle you know you’re being treated to…
SOULEANCE
La Belle Vie
First Word Records
CD // £9.99

Parisian producer Fulgeance meets What The Funk resident DJ, Soulist on a laidback and jazzy suite of 19 Hip Hop tracks. Dusty samples are chopped and nudged with Fulgeance’s signature electronic touch, but thanks to Soulist’s influence the project is more reserved, organically grooved than his partner’s usual output. Raashan Ahmad lends some real skool authenticity to the blazing horns and neck snap beats of ‘Pride’, while drummer Shawn Lee…

Macabre Unit’s Digital division hits up their first platter: a split between Manchester’s Biome and Essex-bassed newcomer, DCult. After leaving a trail of destruction with his recent drops for Osiris Music and Black Box, Biome harnesses slathering darkside synth rasps and industrial drums in a dread halfstep pattern on A-side ‘Persepolis’. B-side DCult favours a palette of more organic percussion and eerie vocal samples on ‘Inner Peace’ to an equally…
DATA
Intrusion / Knives From Heaven
BLACK BOX
12″ // £5.99

Data on a heavyweight Dubstep flex for Black Box. No mucking about here: ‘Intrusion’ is a proper, stripped-down darkside missile carved from tensile 2-step drums and strafing cyber-bass; ‘Knives From Heaven’ steps off kevlar-coated drums and bass with a reserved sense of dread drama. Both are killers.
PERVERSE
The Iceman / Submerge
ARTIKAL MUSIC UK
12″ // £7.99

Murderous, militant halfstep from a new duo named Perverse for the young Artikal label. ‘The Iceman’ cometh with scene-setting intro sample submitting to swooping bass and loitering drums accented with hard-stepping ice-pick-on-steel snares, killer styles. B-side’s atmospheric, Reese-driven halfstepper ‘Submerge’ is perhaps more reserved, but still with that evil glint in its eye.

CONRAD SCHNITZLER
00/830 Endtime
m=minimal

Like the rest of his massive body of work, he imposes a…

CONCESSIONAIRES
Artificial Interface
Under The Spire
LP // £12.99

Epic Sci-fi synth visions from Digitalis boss Brad Rose and his buddy Pete Fosco as Concessionaires. This is some of the darkest, most majestic gear with heard from Brad, at least: pollution-scarred night-black atmopsheres are punctured by flame-spurting synths, as viewed from a space shuttle departing earth in the midst of an apocalypse. Widescreen.
DOLPHINS INTO THE FUTURE
Canto Arquipelago
Underwater Peoples Records
LP // £16.99

Lieven Martins parts the veils of consciousness and invites us into his divine world with ‘Canto Arquipelago’ for Underwater Peoples Records. Borrowing and sifting through elements of musique concrete, new age ambient and library music, he sketches almost-tangible scenes of incredibly lush, hypnotic beauty, sweeping us from field recordings to cannily surreal synthesis thru pockets of exquisite exotica and ancient-sounding percussive rituals with breezy effortlessness. Lieven elucidates further in Fact…

The second release on Jacques Greene’s new Vase label comes courtesy of the mysterious Arclight, proffering a 3-track EP of nocturnal pop manoeuvres. ‘Vitamin D’ is an arresting opener, its vocal layers suspended in leagues of dub-space and drone, the intensity building exponentially, the anticipated release of a beat drop infinitely deferred. ‘Bypass’ sticks with the sweltering, ’bout-to-collapse wooziness, reminding of ace NWAQ productions, while the impressionistic Chicago jack…

COMMUNE
12″ // £6.99

Three tracks of stripped-to-the-bone House and Techno, proper white label styles. A-side’s got a tasty House cut with upbuilding chords and cool, clean grooves, and another more dubbed out and darker bit that sounds like older Dettmann and Klock productions. B-side is a deeper tripping Techno player reminiscent of Function’s more focussed rollers or recent styles from Shifted or the Avian and Horizontal Ground imprints.
TREVINO
Buried / Derelict
NAKED LUNCH
10″ // £6.49

**Purple Vinyl** Marcus Intalex reassumes his Trevino moniker for [NakedLunch] on a pair of robust TechnoHouse smarts. ‘Derelict’ is the more up-for-it, acting like it’s 1994 down the Haç with a marching, jack-y swagger, pilled-up breakdown and crisp snare rolls. On a deeper tip, ‘Buried’ swings with a more sensual groove accented by crisp rimshots and warm, upbuilding chords,
SHIFTED
Crossed Paths
Mote Evolver
CD // £12.99

Terrific debut album of steely, atmospheric techno from Shifted. It seems most people have a pretty good idea about the true identity of the British producer behind this material, but the man himself is staying admirably tight-lipped, and we’re not about to give the game away. It’s hardly important anyway, because this project is really about the music, and what music it is: with clear nods to Sandwell-District’s Feed-Forward, Shifted…
VAKULA
Leleka EP2
Leleka
12″ // £8.99

**Limited edition of 500 copies on hand-stamped two-tone 180g coloured vinyl** From the House hotbed of, erm, Ukraine, Vakula offers the 2nd instalment on his Leleka series. Warmest Afro-cosmic vibes rise up from the tape-cosseted surfaces of ‘I Wanna Dance With You All My Life’, and ‘Still Time’ shuffles into odder cosmic dub zones on the A-side. Flip it and ‘Bug Powder’ slowly reveals a steppin’ House rhythm buried beneath…
OUTBOXX
Power Cruising / Through the Night
BRSTL
12″ // £6.99

**Limited, hand-stamped edition of 300 with insert** New Deep House music from Bristol’s Outboxx duo. A-side is the loungin’, slinky Bar groove ‘Through The Night’ featuring Naomi Jeremy while flipside features the dubby Beatdown strut of ‘Power Cruising’. Fans of Floating Points, Julio Bashmore should check this out.
LANDO KAL
Rhythm Sektion / Inquisition
Hotflush Recordings
12″ // £6.49

Keenly awaited missiles from Lazer Sword’s Lando Kal. Following the theme of his release for Rush Hour and Stillcold Records, ‘Rhythm Sektion’ drags a classic rave sample into 2012 over chunky, rolling Techno-House vibes with a strong nod to the swagger of classic early bleep trax. B-side’s ‘Inquisition’ grinds a dirty big room rut of hulking square bass and swinging drums for 3am miscreants.
MIDLAND
Placement EP
AUS Music
12″ // £7.99

Midland returns to Aus Music with four tracks of coolly sophisticated and diverse UK House. Starting out slow and atmospheric, ‘Tape Burn’ unfurls a languid, bass-driven Deep House groove burnished with ghostly field recordings and warmed through with breathy chords, while ‘Placement’ gets involved with whirring clonk rhythms fashioned for proggier House ‘floors. Deeper in, ‘What We Know’ latches onto a pedigree Tech-House roll rubbed with submerged dub chords and…
BEN SIMS / ROBERT HOOD
Straight From Bolivia / New Blood (Robert Hood Mix)
THEORY
12″ // £7.99

Driving and funked-up Techno from Ben Sims and Rob Hood. UK stalwart Sims makes good on the clenched, forward 4/4 motions of ‘Straight From Bolivia’ while Rob Hood funks up ‘New Blood’ on the flip with chopped gospel blues gasps and ragging stabs shackled to jab-jacking kicks.
CLAUDIO PRC
Inner State
PROLOGUE
2×12″ // £12.99

Debut album of darkly expressive Italian Techno reductions from one of the scene’s newest additions. ‘Inner State’ builds on the Claudio’s reputation for droning, atmospheric and high calibre dark Techno on labels such as Aconito and Prologue. It contains seven tracks of monotone bass patterns ranging from straight kicking 4/4 pounds to offset rollers, all with that unrelenting sense of gloom and noirish unease.
NEIL LANDSTRUMM / MATT WHITEHEAD
Limited 20th Edition
DON’T
12″ // £6.99

Jerome Hill’s Don’t label unleashes a celebratory 20th release split between Neil Landstrumm and Matt Whitehead. Landstrumm does his stodgy acid thing on ‘Brutality’ and a more swinging, tripped-out take on Beltram’s classic with ‘Energy Cash’. Yep, they’re all produced on hardware. Matt Whitehead drops a scoop of jackin’ New Beat House on ‘To The Beat’ and toms-driven Chi-town styles on ‘A Is For Acid’.
IVANO TETELEPTA
Black Dynamite
FEAR OF FLYING
12″ // £6.99

Four dry and crispy House trax with a rooted Funk from Ivano Tetelepta. His third 12″ for Fear of Flying pays homage to the eponymous retro-vintage blaxploitation flick courtesy of well woven samples like the tidy guitar motif tucked into ‘Block A’ or ‘Busted Loop’s Moodymann-esque use of crowd atmosphere and the filtered samples on ‘Mother’s Love’, all complemented with thick, lustrous bass hits and dusted drums for smoky basements…
DAOJIA
Riego Street (Scan7 Mix)
Awkward Movements
12″ // £7.99

UK/US-based producer’s flighty garage f*turism backed with a remix from Detroit veterans, Scan 7. Daoija’s deft, dippin’ original pivots off tight Dub chords and fruity synth squirts while Scan 7 shackle down to a stepping Electro-Techno rhythm accented with a bubbling electro bassline.

Saigon Rock & Soul: Vietnamese Classic Tracks 1968-1974
Sublime Frequencies
CD // £14.49

Sublime Frequencies’ long-awaited documentation of late ’60s/early ’70s Vietnamese Rock, Pop & Soul yields a treasure trove for fans of retro Acid-Rock, Psychedelia and saccharine ballads. Influenced by French chanson, the Western music collections of GIs, and coming from a time before “tacky” electronic production catered to the South East Asian taste for newness, these seventeen fiery and astonishing songs were recorded in makeshift studios and even US army facilities…
ORCHESTRE SUPER BORGOU DE PARAKOU
The Bariba Sound: 1970 – 1976
ANALOG AFRICA
CD // £13.99

**CD + 28-page colour booklet including interviews, photographs, liner notes** Analog Africa return to Benin, and the sweetly psychedelic, electrified Afro Beat and Highlife sounds of Orchestre Super Borgou de Parakou – stars of the label’s much loved ‘African Scream Contest’ compilation. Blazing organ solos, supremely loose drumming and tight, melodic guitars are at the core of ‘The Bariba Sound 1970-1976’, but it’s the inimitably complex and unconventional arrangements, playing…

With it, they’ve moved closer to the Western rock sound which has always influenced…
