Hello,

Two monolithic Vinyl-On-Demand boxsets from wave pioneers John Bender and Clock DVA, and the massively anticipated album from Carter Tutti Void tower over proceedings this week.

Housed in deluxe, foil-stamped 7LP folder and limited to 600 copies, ‘Memories Of Mindless Mechanical Monologues 1976-1985’ is a comprehensive collection of prototypical minimal wave electronics by John Bender, a revered but somehow unsung pioneer of DIY electronics. From motorik experiments pre-dating Techno and Acid with a keen, pioneering taste for dissonant timbre, to drum machine/concrete experiments reminiscent of Chris Carter, to almost aquatic arrangements that come across like crucial precursors to Drexciya’s finest material – basically, it’s a total find, one of the best collections of its kind we’ve come across – major props to Vinyl on Demand for digging so much deeper.

Equally worthy of note is the milestone 6LP + DVD boxset ‘Horology: A Chronology of DVAtion 1978-80’, compiling Clock DVA’s rawest, earliest output. In case you don’t know, Clock DVA were an integral part of the nascent 2nd wave who followed in the wake of Throbbing Gristle’s pioneering transgressions. It’s an immense and eye-opening set of primordial, bastardised electronics and psycho acoustics strongly recommended to fans of their forefathers, or Cabaret Voltaire, The Pop Group, Pere Ubu etc. Only 600 copies exist, housed in opulent book-style folder with 36-page booklet and DVD.

Which brings us neatly to the fearsome Carter Tutti Void album, finally released this week on Mute after months of anticipation. Featuring Chris & Cosey re-energised by Factory Floor’s Nik Void, ‘Transverse’ documents their now-legendary live show of 2011 – a powerful display of rigid Teutonic rhythm, atonal noise and future-primitive incantations. We assure you, it’s every bit as good as we all hoped it would be, and then some.

Addison Groove’s debut album ‘Transistor Rhythm’, meanwhile, is the perfect entry for Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons imprint. Catering to all manner of Bass-heavy tastes, it roves from Jeep beats to fidget funk and Footwork derivatives with a precision engineered stride. UK, Berlin or US, it’s all the same to him and all the better for it. Heavyweight pressing on red, orange and yellow coloured vinyl.

Another hot tip for armchair ravers and digital DJs: the 2nd of three definitive early Regis collections ‘Complete Works 1997-1998′. 14 stone cold, bone snapping and funked-up Industrial Techno machinations from the master. Get owned/get it owned.

Home listeners, meanwhile, should be directed to Jozef Van Wissem & Jim Jarmusch’s first full-length collaboration’ Concerning The Entrance Into Eternity’ for Important Records, and the very lovely ‘Untitled’ suite of strings on the Untitled label. The former features the rebel Dutch Lutenist paired with the famed filmmaker in beautiful, patiently attuned instrumental dialogue, while the latter is and exquisite, hand-made package – limited to 90 copies – featuring a deeply talented modern classical composer recording incognito.

Special mention to Awesome Tapes From Africa and their double LP ‘Volume 7’ of rarified Ghanaian songcraft by Bola, and also to Mi Ami’s first fully fledged foray into Deep House-Disco on ‘Decade’ for 100% Silk – a must for fans of it’s creators Damon “Magic Touch” Palermo, and Daniel “Ital” Martin-McCormick. And not forgetting Dylan Ettinger’s ‘Lifetime Of Romance’ wave songs for lonely gynoids and leather clad synth fantasists.

Stepping to the floor, we got a killer white label remix session from Shed’s Wax project in Alpine Dub and shakedown Techno styles, and Gene Hunt & Theo Parrish doing the Chicago do in heavy style for Rush Hour. And at the other end of the Chi-scale, Om Unit and Machinedrum link on three fast-forward Footwork-meets-Jungle slayers for Planet Mu under their Dream Continuum alias, and Distal hooks up with DJ Rashad for for Brighton’s Well Rounded Individuals. And there’s just room left for a little one from Downwards, presenting the The Vivids’ limited edition debut on 7″.

Also out this week, new releases from Atheus, Boddika, DMZ, Tectonic Plates, DVA, Photek, Apparat vs Fennesz, Prince Rama, Mark Stewart, Spectrum Spools, Nite Jewel, Emeralds vs Daphni, Idle Hands, Finders Keepers, Fort Romeau, Emptyset, Legowelt, Brey, Jessie Ware, Mensah, Photek, Konntinent, Tangerine Dream, Constellation, plus forthcoming releases available to pre-order from Burial, Conrad Schnitzler, Atom TM and Talk Talk.

Have yourselves a fabulous week…

Peace! Nekkers…xx

Albums of the Week

JOHN BENDER
Memories of mindless mechanical monologues 1976-1985
ELECTRONIC
Vinyl On Demand
7LP Deluxe Box Set // £119.99

**Deluxe 7LP set in a sublime foil stamped book – limited to 600 individually numbered copies with certificate of ownership and colour insert/liner notes. A holy grail for all wave riders – so damn good** John Bender is commonly referred to as the “godfather” or “inventor” of minimal wave electronics. Thanks to some proper detective work, Frank Maier and the Vinyl-on-Demand team reassert the reclusive auteur’s rightful status with this comprehensive collection, reissuing his three self-released LPs on Record Sluts and his four official tapes for the first time, together with previously unreleased material recorded pre and post his short lived but influential period 1980-83. It comprises a genuinely unique body of work; a strangely affecting voice and artfully purified avant-pop aesthetic which evolved in relative isolation and whose influence pre-saged myriad strains of minimal acid, techno and esoteric electronic expression. Perhaps of most interest to the longtime fan are the three previously unheard sides. Dating to 1976, ‘Boom Ober Babasooma’ is the most conventional work here, bearing obvious influence from Robert Wyatt’s pop work with The Soft Machine in seven surprisingly well-developed experiments. But it really starts to get interesting as he begins to unlearn the rules and develop his taste for dissonant timbre and queered pitch on the six tracks of ‘Beep Squeek Hum Squawk’, whose relative primitivism is subsequently cast into sharp relief against the avant-pop intuition of the side-long 1985 soundtrack extract ‘Johnny Vortex’. Joining the dots, (chronologically, at least) we find his run of work produced and self-released between 1978 and 1983. From the sharply-contoured rhythms, concise structuring and soured synth tones of his debut LP ‘I Don’t Remember Now / I Don’t Want To Talk About It’, matters get crucially urgent with the lean and itchy experimentalism of ‘Plaster Falling’. And we discover his very rarest, practically impossible-to-find material on the run of cassettes; in the pinging quicksilver refractions of 1982’s ‘Packing List’, and later with absolute must-haves like the martial bounce of ‘Galacial’ from ’83s ‘Pop Surgery’. Packaged together, this can be considered a definitive root for the possibilities of stripped down and futuristic electronics, and comes with the strongest recommendation to anyone interested in that nexus where the likes of Tara Cross, Veronica Vasicka and Blackest Ever Black congregate. A final note – it might be pricey, but it’s nowt compared with 2nd hand costs!!! This is just an incredible find – don’t miss out.

CLOCK DVA
Horology: A Chronology of DVAtion 1978-80
ELECTRONIC
Vinyl On Demand
6LP+DVD Deluxe Box Set Folder // £109.99

**Deluxe 6LP fine linen book and folder with an embossed cover. Includes DVD and 36-page booklet plus individually-numbered certificate in edition of 600 – stuniing, definitive package** Vinyl-on-Demand serve an absolutely crucial Industrial/EBM history lesson with a ‘Chronology Of DVAtion 1978 / 1979 / 1980’. Formed in Sheffield, 1978, around the core lineup of Adi Newton, Steven Turner, David Hammond, and Simon Elliot-Kemp, ClockDVA built upon the havoc created by their industrial forefathers, Throbbing Gristle, sharing their subversive taste for sonic, moral and political deviance. They were part of a virile and prolific scene, collaborating and consorting with the likes of Jhonn Balance, Chris Watson, Martin Ware, and Richard H. Kirk in their earliest days to forge a distempered and visceral sound. This box set covers their nascent releases prior to the legendary ‘White Souls in Black Suits’ for TG’s Industrial Records label and holds six albums of primordial, bastardised electronics and psycho acoustics fused with ideas gleaned from the writings of Aleister Crowley, Marquis De Sade, Kenneth Grant, Antonin Artaud or Charles Baudelaire. With all of this in mind, it’s easy to see how these six LPs comprise such an integral component in the machinery of early Industrial music. From the etheric sludge of ‘2nd’ to the blank-eyed restraint on ‘Lomticks Of Time’, thru ‘Sex Works Beyond Entanglement’s libidinous yen, to the heady flux of ideas in ‘Fragment’ and their darkly seductive film soundtrack ‘Fragment Of Hysteria’, Clock DVA at once defied categorisation and established the aesthetics of the New Wave to come. Alongside TG, Pere Ubu, and The Pop Group, Clock DVA are genuine pioneers of this most uncompromising branch of music, and well deserving of this milestone compilation. An absolute must for all folowers of electronic/synth/wave/Industrial music – so so good.

CARTER TUTTI VOID
Transverse
ELECTRONIC
Mute
LP+CD // £14.99

*Comes with a bonus digital track which will be dropped into your account on the release date* The hugely anticipated album from Chris Carter, Cosey Fanni Tutti and Factory’s Floor Nik Void finally arrives on Mute, and we’re pleased to report it’s even more than the sum of its parts, a really impressive record indeed. Void coaxes out of Chris & Cosey some of the most aggressive, motorik tendencies they’ve ever displayed outside of Throbbing Gristle across the four long pieces featured here, taken from a special live performance the trio gave as part of Short Circuit’s Mute festival at London’s Roundhouse last year. Whether or not you were present at the massively oversubscribed show – or If, like us, you spent the duration queuing unsuccessfully to get in – you need this document of a very special hook-up in your life. The shared predilections of the three individuals obviously come to the fore – rigid Teutonic rhythm, bursts of atonal noise, future-primitive incantations and an uncompromisingly dark, stark colour palette – but it’s a hard release to classify, carried along by its own improvisational energy and momentum. For the most part its instrumental, save for the odd distorted bark, wail or chant from Nik or Cosey, who sound like nothing so much as a pair of lost tribespeople who’ve escaped from from the grooves of a Jon Hassell or David Toop record; Chris Carter’s dirt-encrusted drum patterns and curdled electronics meanwhile remind us of Ike Yard’s shamanic electro experiments, the destroyed techno of Pete Swanson and Vatican Shadow, the darkling kosmische of Monoton and the broken hypno-industrialism of Regis and Sandwell District. We expected Transverse to be a treat, but we never dared imagine it would sound as thrillingly contemporary and powerful as this.

ADDISON GROOVE
Transistor Rhythm
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
50 WEAPONS
3LP // £19.99

*Heavyweight triple LP set – on Red, Orange and Yellow coloured vinyl* Electrifying album of 808 party music from Addison Groove, on Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons imprint. Though we stand by his Hesdhunter material, it’s fair to say that Tony Williams has found his calling as Addison Groove, drawing on juke, electro, dubstep, ghetto-house and jeep-rocking hip-hop variants to create super-heavy bass music that leaves you with no alternative but to dance and/or bite your lower lip raw. You can imagine the cast of Jersey Shore throwing shapes to the potty-mouthed, Spank Rock-featuring ‘Bad Things’ and ‘Beeps’, while ‘Rudeboy’ and ‘Night To Remember’ invest footwork with some UK-Caribbean flavour, ‘Sooperlooper’ updates fidget in gloriously tasteless fashion, while ‘Ass Jazz’ is the kind of technicolour, precision-engineered Funky deconstruction you could imagine Erik & Fiedel fashioning in their Berlin studio. The second half of the album explores tripper textures in amidst the bludgeoning sub wumps and tom hits, but mostly this is a record that asks you to do one thing, and one thing only: shake that aaaaasssss.

REGIS
Complete Works 1997 – 1998
TECHNO / HOUSE
DOWNWARDS
CD // £8.99

Regis clears his archive marked ‘1997-1998’ with a crucial 14 track selection. Covering Techno’s “golden era”, it draws on material from the ‘Delivered Into The Hands Of Indifference’ album alongside cuts from the ‘Facilities’ 12″ and his collaboration with DAF’s Robert Görl to outline some of his most potent work. Kicking out with ‘A Necklace Of Bites’ – transferred from vinyl for the first time – it cycles through the hypnotic classic ‘Disease Through Affection’, onto the body-owning ‘Executive Handshake’, the rolling drones of ‘Concentrate’ and the metallic ripple of ‘From Now On’, rounding off at the aforementioned Görl collaborations. In a word: definitive.

JOZEF VAN WISSEM & JIM JARMUSCH
Concerning The Entrance Into Eternity
FOLK / AMERICANA
Important Records
LP // £14.99

Rebel renaissance Dutch lutenist Jozef Van Wissem meets American filmmaker and guitarist – and friend and collaborator – Jim Jarmusch on five beautifully engrossing, time-dilating duets recorded in Brooklyn in late 2011. Jarmusch has previously appeared on Van Wissem’s ‘Concerning The Beautiful Human Form After Death’ but this is their first full length collaboration, yet you’d never guess it. Patiently attuned to each other’s presence, the pair weave exquisite melody and tempered feedback with an instinctual understanding, conducting themselves in a wandering, intimately conversational dialogue with Jarmusch’s electric and acoustic guitars creating walls of feedback or subtly reflective accompaniment over the first four pieces. The fifth and final ‘He Is hanging By His Shiny Arms, His Heart An Open Wound With Love’ features Jarmusch reading from St. John Of The Cross over Van Wissem’s solo lute composition, tying in with the track titles and quote from Chritian mystic Emanuel Swedenborg.

UNTITLED
Untitled 04
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
UNTITLED
CD // £12.99

**Ultra limited edition – just 90 copies, handmade and stamped jacket with screenprinted inserts** The untitled crew deliver their fourth anonymous instalment – this one coming from one of the most well loved and talented modern classical composers out there, recording incognito. Over four tracks of solo strings (cello, we think) and plaintive, shy piano dappled with delicate, dusted textures and restrained use of tape delay. You’ll be able to gauge from the samples that it’s really quite lovely. Grab one while you can…

MI AMI
Decade
ELECTRONIC
100% Silk
CD // £11.99

**35 minutes of material spread over 4 tracks** Mi Ami is the five year old project of exotic punk-gone-House types Daniel Martin-McCormick (Ital) and Damon Palermo (Magic Touch). ‘Decade’, their first release since last years ‘Dolphins’ for Thrill Jockey, signifies a suitably decadent sea-change to their sound in keeping with respective solo projects. Basically they’ve ditched the guitars and drums for a hypnotic, electronic blend of Deep House and Disco filtered through their sly post-punk sensibilities. For our $, it’s their finest collaborative work yet, stretching their svelte, club-and-gig-toned laptop muscle over four extended groovers aimed squarely at the more misty, pie-eyed ends of the night. On ‘Horns’ Daniel’s snotty no-wave vox jar very nicely against cocoa-buttered Chicago simulations, while the luscious ‘Time Of Love’ coolly sidesteps their punk roots with smoothly tucked-in disco bass and a sense of debonaire, balearic Dub romance. Deeper yet, ‘Free Of life’ meditates on rippling congas and hyperreal reverbs looking for that Panorama Bar booking while ‘Bells’ sounds something like a long lost Virgo dub starring a cameo vocal from Zed off of the Police Academy films. Aces.

BOLA
Volume 7
WORLD
AWESOME TAPES FROM AFRICA
2LP // £17.99

*Includes download code redeemable from the label. Awesome Tapes From Africa come up trumps again with their 2nd release: a double LP eight-track album of ruggedly stripped down songcraft rarely heard outside the remote Upper East region of Ghana. Crisp, dry machine rhythms propel impassioned, expressive vocals and tangy, twanged melodies. Includes download code redeemable from the label** “This man who grew up herding livestock in the savannah, far away from the tropical coast and cosmopolitan cities of Accra and Kumasi, has aligned himself with national and international means of expression to transform his hometown sound into something downright avant-garde. His bold fury stems from the kologo—a two-stringed lute with a calabash gourd resonator— and Frafra language vocals, emitted in raspy bursts. Traditionally, kologo performances occur at pito (local beer made from fermented millet or sorghum) bars, weddings, funerals, festivals or spontaneous jams on the street, which are the environments where Bola honed his craft as a solo musician. In recent years, he came into contact with people like his mentor Guy One who helped him get into the studio to document what is some of the most dynamic music to come out of Ghana since the emergence of hiplife in the mid-’90s. Volume 7, which came out in 2009, is just one entry in a brilliant series of recordings Bola has released on CD and cassette. Although he employs a traditional instrument and the age-old mode of griot story-telling, Bola embraces elements of up-to-the-minute mainstream Ghanaian music—drum machines, synths, bone-shaking bass. Inspired by pioneering kologo greats like King Ayisoba, Bola has taken a dynamic instrument used by traditional healers and herbalists to sing to god in search of advice and taken it to futuristic heights.”

DYLAN ETTINGER
Lifetime Of Romance
ELECTRONIC
NOT NOT FUN
CD // £11.99

Darkwave cyberpunk intrigue from synth-wrangler Dylan Ettinger. Moving on from his kosmiche issues, Dylan deploys his own vocals to authentically grubby, DIY effect on seven leathered-up and shark-eyed experimental Wave songs. Docking in with the Neuromancer-referencing ‘Wintermute’ he draws us deep into his narrative with the phet-affected dissonance and rusted machine beats of ‘Disparager’, through to the panoramic cue ‘Maude’, stalking the depths of the sprawl searching for the cheapest gynoid fun on ’18’ before crooning the narcotic misery of ‘Blue and Blue’, leaving the future open to great possibilities with this awesome augmentation of his sound. TIP!

WAX (SHED)
No. 30303
TECHNO / HOUSE
WAX
12″ // £6.99

**Hand-stamped white label** Hey-O-Hansen and Shed remix the 3rd Wax 12″. A-side D&M mastering and cutting engineer and producer Helmut Erler links with Michael Wolf as Hey-O-Hansen for a rumpy Alpine Dub version. Flipside Shed his-self reworks his own cut, reinforced with calamitous kicks and a deadly, offset percussive shuffle. Killer twelve – limited copies!

DREAM CONTINUUM (MACHINEDRUM AND OM UNIT)
Reworkz EP
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Planet Mu
12″ // £5.99

Machinedrum meets Om Unit on a definitive Footwork-meets-Jungle-session as Dream Continuum. Both producers have been ahead of the game in assimilating the analogous features of these styles; Machinedrum with the much-loved hybrids of his ‘Rooms’ LP and Om Unit with the razor-sharp Philip D Kick jaunts. On the A-side opens a heady hyperspace where taut, skittish drums and fibrillating helium vocal samples urge bodies into the future, and ‘Giv a Lil Luv’ harks back to classic rave with evocative samples and calamitous amens cut with centrifugal Footwork force. Again ‘Set It’ is another information overload of ragga chat and torso-challenging syncopation. Scorcher.

DISTAL FT. DJ RASHAD
Stuck Up Money
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Well Rounded Individuals
12″ // £5.99

Mutant Chicago/Atlantan bangers from two men-of-the-moment. With a little help from his buddy, Rashad, Distal goes in hard and funky with the bucking, Hip Hop infused club heat of ‘Stuck Up Money’ on the A-side. Flipside ‘Behold The Jungle Bootleg’ and ‘Short & Sweet’ do a ramraid on early ’90s ‘ardcore and jungle with scalping mentasms fused to pneumatic, earth-quaking bass and hyperkinetic rhythms. Nutty.

GENE HUNT / THEO PARRISH
May The Funk Be With You (Theo Parrish Mix)
TECHNO / HOUSE
Rush Hour
12″ // £7.99

Superb, reel-skool Chi-jax from the notorious Gene Hunt and Theo Parrish! Gene’s moody, string-heavy groover ‘May The Funk Be With You’ is easily his best production in years, a proper retro-vintage warehouse jackers’ anthem for 2012. Flipside Theo Parrish does his remix thang, slumping the tempo and rubbing the bassline with visceral studio trickery for a tipsy shuffle imbued with a psychedelic gospel vibe. Cracking stuff, straight tipped!

THE VIVIDS
Mt. Radiant / Hangman
INDIE / ROCK / ALTERNATIVE
DOWNWARDS
7″ // £6.49

Downwards return to the 7″ format with The Vivid’s debut single – a strong look for followers of the label. “sounding like The Chameleons if they had come from LA”. A-side is the hypnotic, ethereal ‘Mt Radiant’, all motorik swagger and dubbed-out, plangent guitars with vocals buried somewhere in the moody funk. B-side ‘Hangman’ hangs on rolling tribal drums and swirling guitars with a faithfully authentic aesthetic. Limited copies.

Both producers have been ahead of the game in assimilating the analogous features of these styles; Machinedrum with the much-loved hybrids of his ‘Rooms’ LP and Om Unit with the razor-sharp Philip D Kick jaunts. On the A-side opens a heady hyperspace where taut, skittish drums and fibrillating helium vocal samples urge bodies into the future, and ‘Giv a…
DISTAL FT. DJ RASHAD
Stuck Up Money

Nutty.
BODDIKA
Acid Jackson / Basement
Swamp 81
12″ // £7.99

*180g vinyl in picture sleeve* ‘Acid Jackson’ sets off warehouse-readied 303 hooks and tidy chords on a Breaks-y swing while ‘Basement’ is primed with crowd-chewing 303 squirms shackled to prodding machine drums and an all important bass heft. A strong look for Swamp 81!
BREY
Brasil
Svetlana
12″ // £5.49

Fruity-assed Afro-Latin-via-London rhythm trips from the man also referred to as Die Barbie Musik Kollektiv and known for his ace remix of Javeon McCarthy. The amount of layered detail and dextrous editing on the ‘Brasil’ EP puts many of his peers to shame, conducting five tracks of restless syncopations stuffed with samples and flammable melody. Highlights have to be the joyfully colourful, almost psychedelic carnival collage of ‘Juno’; and the…
MAK & PASTEMAN
Do The Same EP
SHIFTING PEAKS
12″ // £5.99

Big debut 12″ from the hotly-tipped Leeds/Notts Bass-heads, Mak & Pasteman, bulked up with ace Lando Kal and Youandewan remixes. ‘Do The Same’ performs cut-up vocal surgery on ‘floor rushing House-to-Breakbeat rollers rhythm replete with bum-pushin’ bass and super-tidy arrangement trickery. Lando Kal’s remix, reduces and re-focuses the groove on a muscular, mercurial square bass accented with diamond-tipped hi-hats while the vocals take on a darker, sexier persona. Flipside ‘Lost’…
COKI
Haymaker
DMZ
12″ // £6.49

Coki sparks off DMZ’s 2nd 12″ of 2012, bursting at the seams with pure steppers’ pressure. A-side ‘Haymaker’ is a party-mashing halfstep bomb with plummeting mid-range synth-lines and wide-assed bass wobbles, but the one you really need is on the flip. ‘Revolution’ cuts loose on a red-eyed and wild-skanking flex with feral synths and broad-shouldered swagger to incite utter madness in the dance. Drop it and watch ’em scatter!
KINGTHING / JAMIE GRIND
Infra12005 EP
INFRASONICS
12″ // £5.99

First release of 2012 for Infrasonics, and if you ask us, it’s one of their best to date. It’s a cracking label debut for producer/DJ/scribe, KingThing. His ‘Waking Up’ groove syncs muscular subs and pointillist percussion to a retina-scarring lazer-tranz breakdown with the force of a prime Boddika or xxxy roller, while ‘Cold Diss’ is a freakin’ outstanding display of special-move edit agility approaching SND levels of body-twysting funk futurism….

Massive album from DVA, his debut full-length for Hyperdub, bringing all the bashiness you’d expect coupled with an afro-futurist, psychedelic component that’s just killing us. Calling upon the disparate vocal talents of – among others – Natalie Maddix, Cornelia, A.L., Muhsinah and elusive South African star Zaki Ibrahim, Scratcha has created a completely unique sound-world, at once sensuously poppy and full of pirate grit. Strangest Feeling
PMR Records
10″ // £8.99

**Limited edition purple wax** One-sided UK Soul-Pop arrow from this bright young talent. In the past two years, Jessie’s delicate but confident vocals have been the centrepiece on some of the biggest tracks by SBTRKT, Sampha and Joker. Stepping out solo she oozes effortless style on ‘Strangest Feeling’. It’s R&B, but shorn of any histrionics or acrobatics, simply relying on her sweetness and grace to impress. We’re not sure who…

Tectonic Plates Volume 3
TECTONIC
4LP // £17.99

**Massive 4 x 12″ vinyl edition** Pinch’s Tectonic Plates comps are always quality documents not just of where his label’s at, but also the current state, and possible future directions, of dubstep and its tributaries. Vol.3 is another corker, zoning in on class new productions from the Tectonic roster and extended label fam. Kryptic Minds, who’ve done as much as anyone to preserve the founding essence of dubstep come correct…
MENSAH
The Gambia
Deep Medi
12″ // £6.49

Mala shares Mensah’s tried and tested weapon ‘The Gambia’ – as deployed on his celebrated XLR8R set – on a deadly Deep Medi curveball. It’s easily one of Mensah baddest productions, essentially an update of swaggering Afrobeat augmented with modern Techno and Dancehall elements in rudest road style. By contrast ‘Trailing Moons Of Saturn’ sounds conventional, but it’s still a bold example of Dubstep sound design at its finest. Recommended!…
DISMANTLE
Detonate / 2 In 1
BLACK GOLD
12″ // £8.99

**Limited, hand-numbered edition of 300 in screen-printed, die-cut jacket and debossed inner** Radged, Electro-esque Kuduro/Dubstep fire from Dismantle. A-side you get the full frontal wallop of ‘Detonate’, railroading heavyweight kicks and steaming electro synths to intense effect. B-side ‘2 in 1’ goes on harder yet.
DUSK CREATOR
Floatin’ / Treasure Isle
STAINAGE
12″ // £5.99

Belgium’s Stainage Records step away from gloomy halfstep torpor into lushed-out Garage/House-inspired electronica. A-side Dusk Creator, Hush, and KLB set the label’s fresher outlook with the deft R&B/Soul swing of ‘Floatin’, while Dusk Creator goes alone on the flip with ‘Treasure Isle’ sounding like a dramatic take on Terror Danjah.
KILLAWATT
71 / Rolling Dunes / Topio
Wheel & Deal Records
12″ // £6.49

Dread pressure from Killawatt on N-Type’s Wheel & Deal label. The supremely burly ’71’ makes its presence felt on the A-side with proper sci-fi Dub atmospheres, all overproof bass dynamics and sheer Techno chords (and is that an AFX sample we can hear in the breakdown?). Flipside ‘Rolling Dunes’ features fearsome synth licks on a snarling halfstep drama, and ‘Topio’ tucks into Techy, minimal formation for the hardcore rollers.

A-side the subtle trance empowerment of ‘Fountainhead’ carries a positive vibe, flushed through with strings and hovering synth chords over typically deft 2-step/Techno drum programming and pure, particle-quivering bass pressure.

Docking in with the Neuromancer-referencing ‘Wintermute’ he draws us deep into his narrative with the phet-affected dissonance and rusted machine beats of ‘Disparager’, through to the panoramic cue ‘Maude’, stalking the depths of the sprawl searching for the cheapest…

Second 12″ single from Sascha Ring’s 6th solo LP as Apparat, backed with Fennesz and DJ Koze remixes. The sumptuous electronic-pop original is revealed as a near-instrumental dub on the A-side, while DJ Koze gives a tenderised, beatless remix of ‘Black Water’ on the flip, next to the swarming psychedelic grain of Fennesz’s ‘Candil De La Calle’ remix.

The first track washes your chakra with chants and purified Now Age vybz, before conducting 15 minutes…

Detached from walls of feedback, the effect of Wino’s world-worn vocals and the dual guitars is engrossing and surprisingly tender, played straight-forward and without…

Spectrum Spools
LP // £15.99

A mind-boggling album of destroyed pop and basement synth experiments from Greg Dalton aka Gary War and Taylor Richardson of Infinity Window. The duo have have channelled the schizo psych-punk energy of Chrome, Ilitch, Flipper and Cleaners From Venus to created a skewed masterpiece of post-hypnagogic madness that manages to be at once wildly digressive and thrillingly direct. Dalton’s vocals and sub-aquatic basslines are instantly recognisable, but they’re less gargled…
EMERALDS
Does It Look Like I’m Here? (Daphni Mixes)
Jiaolong
12″ // £6.99

Daphni (Dan Snaith aka Caribou) takes everyone’s favourite synth-o-nauts Emeralds to the dancefloor in two epic mixes of the title track from their last album on Editions Mego. As you might have predicted, it’s a spiralling, dizzying affair. Mix 1 attacks from the off, ratcheting the drama to intergalactic, James Cameron-esque levels with turbulent arrangement powered by heads-down and galloping Techno rhythms. Mix 2 is about delayed gratification, holding off…

Captured Tracks present a reissue of U.V. Pøp’s achingly miserable and compelling post-punk debut from 1983. Their debut record is a dystopian expression of their time and place manifested in affective synths, emaciated machine beats and barbed guitars. Vocals are heavily accented with a stoic but cutting Yorkshire burr, and range from spoken word mantras (‘Psalm’) to urging, cracked poetics, but there’s something about it all which genuinely eludes hits…

SCANONE
Andromeda
YELLOW MACHINES
12″ // £5.99

Scanone ropes his mates ADJ, Radioactiveman and Sync24 in for a hardcore sci-fi Electro session. The original title track burns up futuristic synths over wide bass and restless drum programming, whereas ADJ’s remix tightens into a stripped-down and concentrated robo-mover. Radioactiveman’s remix is hyperkinetic, driving, and Sync24 goes far out darkside with serious bass pressure.

ALEX COULTON
Candy Flip
IDLE HANDS

Idle Hands present the buttoned-up TechnoHouse swing of Alex Coulton on their tenth release. He’s previously shared a platter with Szare for Sydrome Z and dropped a blink-and-miss-it 12″ for All Caps, but this is his highest profile drop to date. Both sides are built for frisky basement action, propelled by overlarge subs within a shifty Techno-House framework. ‘Candy Flip’ revolves around a nagging square bass hook and powerful, spherical…

TRIKK
Jointly / I Fall Down
Man Make Music
12″ // £7.99

Porto, Portugal’s Trikk joins ManMakeMusic’s London/Berlin set with two debonaire, Teched-out House rollers. ‘Jointly’ makes a strong impression with guttural 4/4 garage bass and brittle, swinging drums tied up with canny vocal samples. Flipside ‘I Fall Down’ is more sophisticated, slyding in with a warmer, darker sort of feminine pressure built from luxuriant subs and craftier, near broken-beat drum programming heat-sealed with floating chords.

Kingdoms
100% Silk
LP // £12.99

P’raps best known as the keyboardist for La Roux, Fort Romeau presents himself as purveyor of deep, raw yet glamorous House music with his 100% Silk debut. ‘Kingdoms’ is well informed by late ’80s and early ’90s Chi-House, as heard from a knowing 2012 stance; there’s basslines and misty mixing trickery that’s belies its modern production. But the vibe is faithfully vintage. It’s late night music for misty dancefloors, from…

Setting up their analogue gear on-site, the duo proceeded to subject the mansion’s irregular spaces…

Sojka meanwhile offers the acid-licked and uptempo 313 romance of ‘Low Gravity’ and ‘Black Hole’s plush Techno soul.
EDIT-SELECT

EDIT-SELECT
12″ // £5.99

Slick, darker big room Techno with a sterling Lucy remix and Edit Select update. Tackling 2010’s ‘Surface To Air’, Lucy resets the bassline and kicks just off axis for a filigree shift while the synths reform in cosmic constellations with a wide-eyed sense of space. LEGOWELT
North Sea Spectrum
SIGNALS

If anything, the aesthetic is rougher, rawer than his numerous singles for the likes of Skylax, Mathematics and Quintessentials over the last…
NICK CHACONA & ANTHONY MANSFIELD
Pan Vs Peter
HECTOR WORKS

US House figures serve a downslow, big-room Balearic sound on the latest Hector Works 12″. A-side ‘Pan vs Peter’ develops an aching chuggy tension from muscular but svelt bass heft and wide, spacious synth arrangements intended for dusky seduction. B-side ‘Peter vs Pan’ pushes the tempo up for a naughtier neo-disco sound with farty sawtooth bassline and ‘Terry’s Nightmare’ is a chunky acid House groove.
RED RACK’EM
If Only The Past
BERGERAC
12″ // £6.99

Mightily dope TechnoHouse from recent Berlin transplant, Danny Berman aka Red Rack ‘Em. His first incision of 2012 features three heavyweight productions. A-side ‘If Only The Past’ rocks square-jawed bass, swinging, shifty drums and an infectious over-the-shoulder vocal with some massive reverbs, no doubt inspired by his several trips to Berghain. This is the sh*t. Flipside ‘Alone Always’ freaks out on a wonky funk tip, splaying cray drums over a…
THE HACKER
