Chain D.L.K.: What are your plans?
Winterbrief: Winterbrief is on an extended break. Please visit our site: www. winterbrief. com or Heartcore Records to find out more information on our last album “Tickets for a Peek” which was released in late 2003.
Chain D.L.K.: Tell us about your creative process. How do your songs come about?
Winterbrief: There are so many ways a Winterbrief song can be born, it is always a mystery…One way we do it usually is by jamming, presenting music to Jan for vocals, or something tends to go on by accident which turns in to something cool…We wrote “I want to be Sexy” drunk on Amaretto. The intent was to write a song whilst being drunk and the end result was pretty cool.
Chain D.L.K.: What do you find most interesting, outside of music?
Winterbrief: I am fascinated by the ocean. I just moved to California so the sea, the water, and the waves are a main interest outside music as well as learning Spanish, travel, and art too.
Chain D.L.K.: Any good tour stories?
Winterbrief: The usual stuff…I think the best story is being cheered and heckled by a group of Polish skinheads in Grenoble, France, all because I was wearing a Fred Perry polo shirt which can be misinterpreted as a skinhead/Nazi thing sadly. A very strange show. Some other more interesting stories involve being thrown out of a club in Philadelphia and causing a near riot. That was amusing.
Chain D.L.K.: Favorite animal? Least favorite?
Winterbrief: I love cats. They are the best animals on the planet because they always look calm, collected, and usually beautiful too. Jan just got a cat from Italy and I have never seen it but it sounds like a little child over the phone…My least favorite animal has to be mice. I hated having to deal with them in Philadelphia. They drove me up the wall!
Chain D.L.K.: Favorite words or phrases?
Winterbrief: My favorite phrase right now is “lesbian women of color”.
Chain D.L.K.: Favorite quotes?
Winterbrief: “ Love conquers all things. Let us too surrender to love” .
Chain D.L.K.: Is there anyone, living or not, who you admire?
Winterbrief: I admire people who pave their own way and have a good quality of life without having to conform to the usual social/economic pressures. I think Momus (aka Nicholas Currie) is an eccentric artist/musicain who has financed his own adventures and still managed to live well too and I admire that but I don’t idolize anyone really…
Chain D.L.K.: Any predictions or speculations for the future, either near or distant, of (1) music, (2) technology, (3) anything else?
Winterbrief: (1) The 80’s are very much in and even in suburbia the kids will be worshipping Gang of Four, the Smiths, etc. What’s next? 90’s nostalgia, sadly; I dunno…My guess is as good as yours. (2) I wish I knew all the right answers but right now I am clueless. I don’t have a working tv…
Chain D.L.K.: Any other advice or message for the readers?
Winterbrief: If you are in the USA, vote Bush/Republicans out of office and change the draconian policies of our administration, and if you are outside the USA please don’t support current American policy. It is hurting the world…
Chain D.L.K.: What are some of the ideas or concepts you had in mind in making the “Tickets For A Peek” record?
Winterbrief: We wanted to make a boppy serious record where the songs are immediate and hit you over the head with their precision and catchiness. The album deals with life and offers someone a glimpse into the mind of Winterbrief.
