Being based in the Baltic city of Kaliningrad (Kˆnigsberg), the Russian duo of Denergized could reach some first recognition with the signing and the release of their album “VHS Recall” on their Hungarian-based label Advoxya Records. Consisting of Case and DS_, this duo likes to introduce us their work, but also refers on its tough cultural and political situation. A quite interesting newcomer we like to present you herewith…

Chain D.L.K.: Greetings, first some words to you. Could you please fill in any biographically details of your music project Denergized? Since your international recognized www-activities have just begun with a MySpace account, every single detail of your musically being seems to interesting to read about…
Denergized: DS_: Greetings! This is a very long story – maybe some things are forgotten, maybe some things are too boring. Course of our Denergized life began in 2004 – is was winter and our good comrade presented us with our first hardware – “Vermona”. It was covered with dust and was out of order. I cursed my life – trying to repair this monster, while Case wrote our first text – “Empty Cell”.
Case: I didn’t want to sing that time, so all our lyrics was created for the 3rd former member. But shortly after we realized that Denergized was just fun for him…
DS_: Fucking asshole :) So I forced Case to become our new vocalist.
Case: All this time of work on our first demo was in full swing – 24 hours, 7 days a week. In summer we released a demo via the net entitled “404”. Because of its harsh sound of the “Vermona”…
DS_: …and its bad mastering…
Case: …listeners described our style from Doom to Powernoise :)
DS_: It’s not a joke… :(
Case: But in spite of everything all comments were more then good – and we started to create new stuff. Of cause we wanted to make our sound more professional – so at the same time of becoming newly-fledged “sound producers” we got fixed up in a job – it was huge sawmill, where we earned enough cash to buy the minimum of necessary devices. In autumn I met with an accident and first lyrics to “VHS Recall” (“Neuro” & “After Tomorrow”) was written in neurosurgical hospital. But – now I’m fine and OK ;)
DS_: So it started again – sleepless nights, cigarette ash and caffeine… And as result – we presented “VHS Recall” (promo CD). Then this disc made a long trip to Advoxya Records.

Chain D.L.K.: Hailing out of Kaliningrad, well, this means to live in a real Russian enclave, somewhere isolated between Poland and the Baltic states Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. What does this “jail” mean to you, cultural and politically?
Denergized: DS_: We prefer to imagine that this “jail” is the Enclave from Fallout 2 :) But seriously – we’ve got a lot of trouble because of it. Starting from endlessly changing ingress and egress rules (to see our relatives and friends in “Big Russia” using land transport we have to fill and collect tens of stupid documents and there is always a chance to fail), ending with the fact, that our government consists of Moskow-based proteges – who only lobby their own interests.
Case: Origins of our culture spring from German and USSR times. Kaliningrad is a former capital of Eastern Prussia – Koenigsberg. And of cause you can see it in monuments, architecture and in landscapes. You just can feel it in the air. For sure it leaves an imprint in us and in our music.

Chain D.L.K.: How did you guys get in contact with Advoxya and how did it happen, that they’ve decided to sign on you?
Denergized: Case: After the “404” demo, cy_cwb from the Moskow project Spin Provider introduced us to the “Dead Channel promo-group”, where we found many helpful and interesting contacts. Our “VHS Recall (promo)” was copied on CD and presented to all our friends – that’s how one copy was given to Alexey from The-Pulsar. And – he found out our stuff great…
DS_: …and saw amaaazing potential in us ;) So he decided to take our promo to Budapest and show it to Dima (the man who leads Advoxya Records). After a time Dima contacted us with offer to release our first full-length CD.
Case: And why Dima took this decision – it’s a secret for us :)

Chain D.L.K.: You’ve entitled your debut album “VHS Recall”. Are you guys still bound on video tapes, or why this dedication to this past video format?
Denergized: Case: Memories are like video tape in VHS format – it’s not digital, you can’t replay wanted frames without rewinding the full movie, without coming across other chapters – sometimes they are painful, terrible and wrecking…
DS_: Sometimes when you keep coming back – step by step, frame by frame – you are looking for erased telephone numbers, forgotten addresses, for missed faces, for “all those moments, that will be lost in time – like tears in the rain…”
Case: “VHS Recall” is our own “total recall” – some things we want to forget, but it’s impossible and video tape of our life will be rewinded in memories to its best frames – every day and every hour as long as it will be lacerated… Empty bars, rainy night – that reflects in its wet asphalt mirror glare of neon signs and sidelights of cars that roll by… Missed calls and unread letters. Last drops of vodka in broken glasses and the galaxy of thousands smoked alone cigarettes… Milligrammes of needed anaesthetic and phantom-limb pains of October evenings… It’s amnesia at all times – with flashes of alcoholic dementia… It’s like painful flashbacks and irreversible lapses of memory… It’s like casual contacts and first kisses – their taste is unforgettable… It’s like cold hotel rooms and snow-blind TV for the whole night… It’s like a map of Germany on a dusty table and views of St. Petersburg from rapid taxies… It’s like faces of our friends and degraded silhouettes of our beloved… It’s like our might-have-been dreams. It’s like bits of our life that we want to give you as a keepsake…
DS_: LIFE IS NOT WHAT YOU SEE, LIFE IS WHAT YOU WISH TO REMEMBER…

Chain D.L.K.: “404” is the error message you’ll get, if you type in a wrong web side address in your browser. But it wonders me if a band can compose a track out of this. Could you please fill in the meaning of this track?
Denergized: Case: This track is about a girl, that escaped from my life and became an error, became a malfunction in my brain… You try to forget, try to remember – but your inner self indicates only one message. Error 404 – not found and lost forever. Cyberpunk semiotics ;)

Chain D.L.K.: Lets talk on the technical side of producing music generally, which seems to be interesting since your sound outfit follows rather some ideas of the Electro/EBM veterans. Which kind of synthesizer do you prefer, hardware or software-based? Where do you see the pro’s and con’s on both kinds?

Denergized: DS_: Honestly, you are not the first who admits the old-school sound of our stuff – but this feature is not the end of it. Do just do what we do – is depends on our mood, on soundtrack recently uploaded in player, on the last movie of your favorite producer, on amount of drunken alcohol and weather forecasts. Technically – our sound is the symbiosis of hard & soft. Unfortunately at the moment we don’t have enough money to buy all wanted models of synthesizers – so as for the “hard” part we use Trophy, captured on the battlefield of inhuman machines :) And what about “soft” – it’s the integral and irreplaceable ground of our music creation kind. Pro’s and con’s? In our experience we can disprove the opinion that the sound of soft-synths is definitely the same as the sound of hard-synths – silicon chip can only imitate the real one oscillator. That’s why the hardware-sound is much “warmer” and real. But in skilful hands VSTi/DX instruments can make this imitation flawless (but it’s a very, very hard work). On the other hand – “flash-and-bone” synths totally occupy a flat, while soft-synths are peacefully located on HDD-drive ;) In any case we must spend a huge amount of time on switching and rotation of endless knobs, buttons and faders – to gain our own unique sound.

Chain D.L.K.: How is it with live gigs? Some of your new tracks should work well to animate the masses, so what do you expect? Any touring plans you can already confirm? Have you ever left your restricted area of Kaliningrad?
Denergized: Case: Most of all we arrange live acts in our hometown.
DS_: :'( But the public is not numerous – and we are a little tired to play again and again for the same people (they are also tired of us ;)
Case: Once we were invited to play in St. Petersburg – the live gig was perfect, we didn’t expect so much positive reactions from people, who heard our music for the first time.
DS_: However – we are a young band. So – getting invitations from aboard was unlikely. But now we hope that this situation will currently change. This summer we going to visit St. Petersburg with our live performance again.

Chain D.L.K.: Your daily life besides being a musician. Please fill in details, relations, hobbies, and further interests?
Denergized: Case: Life besides being a musician? It’s too boring ;) Office, where I work as supply chain manager, though it isn’t the best place for inspiration. Fortunately I’ve got enough free time to spend it on my hobbies – most of all it’s literature (I write a bit) and computer games – I can’t imagine my life without X-Universe, pirate spaceship and joystick. Another hobby is music – it’s my side-project “Ex.Delicto”. The stuff is free to download and you can easily find it on the internet. By the way – DS_ has also his own project – “Load Runner”.
DS_: I wake up and drink my god damn cup of coffee. Next step – several hours in university, where I overtake the wonders of radiophysical alchemy. Then – my work in Central Hospital as X-ray engineer, where I’ve got a possibility to gain a minute to compensate my eternal insomnia. My hobbies are usual – books, cinema, mugs of oriental tea, drinking beer with friends and walks through the streets, where time stands still…

Chain D.L.K.: Please let us know about your upcoming plans, some new releases you like to confirm here?
Denergized: Case: One of our new tracks – “M.I.A. / I miss hell” will be released on a .NBK Records compilation. It’s a web-release, but it’s very important for us – it will present the best Russian Techno-Industrial/EBM projects, many of them are our good friends. Besides this we work hard on our next album – “After The Happy-End”.
DS_: We keep going deeper into the finding out the truth – in our conceptual plan “After The Happy-End” will be the sequel of “VHS Recall”. The first album was dealing about the past, the second one will be about the present.

Chain D.L.K.: Some final words to our readers to conclude this interview?
Denergized: (both) First of all – thank you for your interesting questions. We were really surprised. Also now we want to thank all the people, who read this interview – from the beginning to this line. We’ve got just 2 wishes for you:
– Find out the hope in our life’s video tape, ’cause hope dies first.
– And – never stay denergized. Life is worthy of it!
