On November 2024, "Lejek Bólu" (Funnel of Pain) by Galaktyka Miesa (Galaxy of Flesh) arrived with a raw, visceral sound, capturing the band’s transition from experimental soundtracks to a fully realized concept album. Released on Zoharum and Ubocze Rec., this album is a journey through both darkly surreal soundscapes and deeply emotional terrain, exploring themes of pain, trauma, and the absurdity of existence in a pre-apocalyptic world.
Unlike their debut, which served as a soundtrack to a non-existent film, "Lejek Bólu" takes a more grounded approach, embracing a story that unfolds through its 14 tracks. The band blends genres such as Ambient, Dark Electro, Darkwave, EBM, and experimental music, creating a unique fusion that evokes dissonance and tension. While the album’s sound is multifaceted, it’s the texture and mood that stand out. Dense, layered synthesizers swirl around distorted rhythms and glitchy noises, pushing and pulling with each song. There’s a sense of controlled chaos as the music ebbs and flows, representing the emotional turmoil and instability at the heart of the album.
Tracks like "Galaktyka Miesa" and "Chirurgia Duszy" (Soul Surgery) capture the interplay of noise and melody, with pounding electronic beats punctuated by deep atmospheric layers. The sound on these tracks is gritty, dark, and industrial in nature, yet there are moments of almost dreamlike ambiance that add contrast. The track "Kociol Chalwy" (Halva Cauldron) offers an excellent example of the band’s skill in blending noise with melody, as sharp, dissonant layers give way to hypnotic, repetitive rhythms that become oddly soothing in their persistence. This ability to mix the jarring and the hypnotic creates an immersive listening experience, with moments of discomfort followed by fleeting calm.
Notably, "Wielki Hipnotyzer" (The Great Hypnotist) stands out with its pulsating bass and eerie, synthesized melodies that reverberate like a lullaby from a dystopian world. There’s a sense of ritualism in the way the music unfolds, as though the listener is being led through a series of increasingly strange and unsettling psychological spaces. Meanwhile, "Falszywy Królik" (False Rabbit) leans into the experimental side of the band’s repertoire, embracing dissonant textures and glitch-heavy beats that create a sense of disorientation, enhancing the feeling of a reality unraveling.
The album’s instrumental arrangements are purposefully erratic, mirroring the emotional instability of the thematic material. While some tracks provide more straightforward electronic beats, others stray into the realm of dark ambient and industrial noise, creating a fractured listening experience that mirrors the chaos and pain described in the album's concept. There’s a feeling of imbalance, as if the tracks are pushing against each other, never quite finding resolution, which complements the existential themes of the album.
Although the album is full of intriguing layers and complex musical arrangements, the lyrics, which are in Polish, may be hard for many English-speaking listeners to grasp. They add an important dimension to the overall atmosphere but aren’t the primary focus of the album, as the mood is conveyed more through the soundscapes and the relationship between noise and silence. The music stands as the true storyteller here, with the vocals serving as a layer within the larger sonic narrative.
