Back with their fourth studio album, electro-punk group Alice in Videoland has A MILLION THOUGHTS AND THEY’RE ALL ABOUT YOU!! Toril Lindqvist, Anders Alexander, Johan Dahlbom, and Martin Kenzo have picked up right where 2008’s She’s A Machine left off: unforgettable pop hooks, flirtatious vocals, and a jumping dance beat. The album features nine brand new songs including the single Spaceship which has already hit the national charts in the band’s home country Sweden. Tracks like “Little Bird” and the incredibly sexy “Bender” show the band’s wide-ranging influences: Goldfrapp, The Presets, and The Birthday Massacre are all in there. And so is Neheh Cherry, who’s classic Buffalo Stance receives a kick-ass cover treatment. The result: the self-proclaimed world’s greatest electropunkband proves that they are. Released on Artoffact Records and available January 11th, 2011. Comes with a free Alice in Videoland poster while supplies last!

“Dormicum is a sedative. „it is used to produce sleepiness or drowsiness and to relieve anxiety before surgery or certain procedures. It is also used to produce loss of consciousness before and during surgery. Dormicum is used sometimes in patients in intensive care units in hospitals to cause unconsciousness. This may allow the patients to withstand the stress of being in the intensive care unit and help the patients cooperate when a machine must be used to assist them with breathing.” How does it relate to the album? Well, I listened to it in the morning and in the evening and I must say it sounds more like a result of insomnia than a cure for it, but you may treat it as a med, why not (for good sounds deficiency for example).’Dormicum’ consists of 11 pills of various properties – not all of them will sooth you; I’d even say they might have the opposite effect – some (like ‘Quarantine’, ‘Post Mortem Apocalypse ‘) energize and stimulate, some (‘Guillotine Gratitude ‘, ‘Methadone’, ‘Hiob’) entrance, some calm you gently (e.g the title one ‘Dormicum’), while the others could even make you start a little rebel at the dancefloor (‘Ambulant’, ‘Chromatose’, ‘The Needle’) but all, absolutely all sound brilliant . You can still hear some echoes of Diary of Dreams here (like, e.g. at ‘Isomniac’), but generally speaking, Martin Sane has moved towards industrial-like electronic not gothic direction. Which is a good thing and definitely doesn’t disturb his exploration of various states of mind and/or body and their presentation in a form of perfectly set sounds and melodies. If I were to put it all short, I’d say: it’s a great album, fresh, including fine compositions, combining electronics with a kind of ambient sound. Using vocal rather moderately, substituting it with samples. Meditative at times, but overall rhythmical and catchy. Perfectly arranged.” – yesternight .pl – Available January 14th, 2011.

Only few months after the debut album “Nera”, ROME was back yet again to show that it’s here to stay. “Confessions d’un Voleur d’âmes” was a call from a world where love and despair are locked in an embrace. Calmer and more personal than “Nera”, these confessions are often dark and poetic, sometimes brutal, but most of all intimate. Again you will find traces of all kinds of genres of obscure music; ambient, neo-classical, dark wave, apocalyptic folk, martial industrial. ROME couldn’t care less about boundaries of genres. However, the tone is less militant, the main themes being treachery and sacrifice, temperance and composure. With a distinctive slice of suicide pop fiddled into their exquisitely dark sound, ROME has established itself as one of the most lively and interesting experimental folk acts up and about. These confessions prove that ROME has become a force to be reckoned with. Sold out for long, this new Trisol edition comes with enhanced booklet, including all lyrics and additional photographs. Released on Trisol and available February 25th, 2011.

At home in the buzzing and relentless cyberspace like no other electro project, EXT!ZE truly stirred up the electro scene in the previous year. With provocative singles like “Gothic Pussy” or the futuristic nightmares on the debut “FallOut Nation” the German-French friendship unmistakably clarified that their music, however convincing, is far from everything these neon-colored dancefloor terrorists have to offer – no matter whether on stage, in the clubs or in the homes of the swelling ranks of followers. With the double album “Paradize 2069”, EXT!ZE ultimately enter the futuristic cosmos of their songs and shows and dive so very deep into the cyberspace that a return to this reality gets more and more unlikely with each passing track. What’s remarkable: “Paradize 2069” is thoroughly based on an elaborate Science Fiction story written by the band itself whose coldly menacing cyberspace aura provides the stage for the furious hymns of this second album and which will be made available as an audio book digitally – free of charge! Held in a post-apocalyptic tenor, “Paradize 2069” tells the story of the hacker and data collector Ace who spends his days solely in digital cyberspace universes. He encounters the both tempting and enigmatic dancer Mira in a club and gets infected by a killer virus through the plug in his head soon after. A cyberspace race against death and for humanity commences, adequately driven by hyperactive beat monsters and harsh bass attacks. Endtime Electro, Terror Trance and Insane Industrial gather to form an explosive sound cocktail epitomizing relentless club culture on chapter one (“Hell”) and trademark beat cascades with surprisingly calm moments on the second CD (“Heaven”). Both works get united by the utopian and yet realistic background story that is present throughout the songs. Comparable to a good book, the cyber disciples EXT!ZE took great care that the 30 tracks (among them remixes by Straftanz, Helalyn Flowers, Frozen Plasma and others) never lack the dynamics elementary for creating the dramaturgy worthy of such a concept. Thus, “Paradize 2069” became a fatally danceable and familiarly flashy as well as an extremely profound and contemporary masterpiece that sounds as if Philip K. Dick popped a few pills and then invented Electro. EXT!ZE are the kings of Cyberelectro 2.0! Released on Trisol and available February 25th, 2011.

K-Nitrate’ began life in early 1993 with Graham Rayner and Steve Etheridge, both ex-members of the acclaimed Industrial act Cubanate. Their highly anticipated first album, ‘Xenophobia’ was released within months. With its fiercely political commentary of the first Gulf War, ‘Xenophobia’ pulled no punches with tracks like “Human Shield” and “Killer Religion”. 1996 saw the recruitment of guitarist Dan Waldman and the release of the ‘Hyperphobia’ EP. ‘Hyperphobia’ contained remixes of material from ‘Xenophobia’ and five new tracks that showcased the band’s move to a more intense live sound. Shortly after the release of ‘Hyperphobia’ both Etheridge and Waldman left ‘K-Nitrate’ to persue other projects, whilst Rayner continued alone. During his involvement with side project, ‘Tramazi’, Rayner was introduced to programmer Christian Weber. The result of this musical union meant ‘K-Nitrate’ gigged extensively, whilst simultaneously providing remixes for various artists as time permitted. In 2007 their second studio album, ‘Active Cell’, accompanied by the remix album ‘Mutagen’, was released. The dancefloor friendly hooks in ‘Active Cell’ saw ‘K-Nitrate’ reach a wider audience than had previously been achieved with their earlier material.

Spawned from acclaimed Industrial band Cubanate, K-Nitrate continue to forge ahead with their third studio album, “Voltage”. Featuring ten tracks full of blistering EBM basslines, infectious grooves and unrelenting Techno beats, “Voltage” provides a modern, harder, take on the classic K-Nitrate sound. From the hook-filled album opener “Future Mind” to the savage album finale “Supremacy”, “Voltage” is a tour de force of modern Industrial music that leaves the listener bruised and bloodied into submission. Released on Advoxya and available January 7th, 2011.

For the fourth edition of this classic series, Blank & Jones went both into their archives again and then met in their studio playing the records to each other. What sounds like pure fun, is pure fun! This time the two passionate record collectors present some rare italo disco classics in the full 12″ versions, mixes from ABC, Tears For Fears, The Cure and Frankie Goes To Hollywood on CD for the very first time and also the first Stock Aikten Waterman production on a so8os release. But it’s not about rare mixes just for the rarity of it, they also have to convince them in quality and songwriting. Of course this is a very subjective collection, but that’s exactly what makes it so special and so different from all the other genre releases. It’s simply done with heart and soul. With a look at the tracklisting it becomes very clearly that they want to celebrate the whole variety of the 80s by presenting not only italo disco heroes like Gazebo, Den Harrow or Mike Francis, but also feature post punk band PIL, goth legends Sisters Of Mercy or even lesser known acts like Book Of Love, Gang Of Four or Hitlist. The non stop dj mix on cd one is a highlight as well, as it brings the original 80s mix flavour to your speakers. Released on Sound Colours and available January 24th, 2011.

Since 1992, the core members of Praxis – Buckethead (guitars), Bill Laswell (bass), and Brain (drums) – has churned out an eclectic series of albums rooted in aggressive avant-rock improv with slabs of hip-hop, psychedelic, funk thrown in. On top of that, a constantly morphing army of innovators including John Zorn, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Yamantaka Eye(Boredoms), Grandmixer DXT, and scores more have contributed to past Praxis live and studio projects – each one a unique musical experiment. This record features what Laswell and M.O.D. Technologies describe as the sequence of doom… RAMM:SLL:ZSS starts it off with a digital metal notice of things to come. He steps aside (for a few tracks) for Hawk to voice his opinion. Dr Israel enters the hardcore fray with advice for the weary. The leader Iggy offers a more mythical based solution. Killah Priest, as always, looks to the distance stars for answers. The mighty Serj Tanikan gives advice for the weak. Mike Patton jumps to attention with a vocal assault to the brain. The return of RAMM and the book of revelations follows. Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins) makes small pieces of big rocks. RAMM:SLL appears again, but a new style. The project goes back to space courtesy of Yoshihide Otomo (Ground Zero) and wrapped up at the end of times Buckethead style. This completes your journey started 48 minutes ago. Released on M.O.D. Technologies and available January 25th, 2011.

First in a series of collaborations between Cyclic Law and Ewers Tonkunst, this is a re-issue of the long sold out second Svartsinn album from the year 2003. “Of Darkness And Re-Creation” is a “collection of stories based on heavy mind struggles, emotional complicity or elegies which either leads to emptiness or dark places for a re-creation of the self image. Darkness is all around us or inside each and every one of us, let¹s not fear it.. Prosper in darkness…” (from the original edition release notes). Maybe the most hopeless and desperate music ever done by Svartsinn’s mastermind’s Jan Roger Pettersen, it is definitely one of the classical works from this “new” generation of dark ambient artists that were gathered around Cyclic Law in the first decade of 2000. This edition has completely new artwork and new mastering, it is limited to 500 copies and comes in a stylish monochrome mini LP-like cover with inner sleeve, both with silkscreened elements. Released on Cyclic Law and available January 17th, 2011.

Second in a series of collaborations between Cyclic Law and Ewers Tonkunstis also a re-issue of a long sold out dark ambient milestone – the debut Northaunt album which first saw the daylight back in 2001 on Polish label Fluttering Dragon. “The Ominous Silence” is more musical album than its followers, with a lot of piano, guitar and synth melodic parts like in the classical tracks “De Sorte Trær” and “Pain Is Better”, but the typical Northaunt elegiac melancholy and dark gloomy nordic ambient soundscapes are already here. This edition has completely new artwork, new mastering and a bonus track, it is limited to 470 copies and comes in a stylish monochrome mini LP-like embossed cover with inner sleeve and three inserts. 10 Tracks. Running time; 60.00. Released on Cyclic Law and available January 17th, 2011.

Coming in Super Jewel-Box. After an absence from the scene of 4 years, here comes ‘CONTRO.LUCE’, the all new, sixth album by CANAAN. It will probably lift some eyebrows, not only because it’s entirely sung in italian, but also because it’s hardly comparable to what the band has done before. The concept of “dark music” still – obviously – fits, but it’s way too narrow and restrictive to describe what CANAAN year 2010 are playing. Cold Wave? Ambient? Dark? Ethnic music? All of these and something more. Now take a deep breath and sink into the shadows the band creates through the 71 minutes of this lightly dimmed abyss. A journey from ashes to dust. CANAAN was born in late 1995 out of the ashes of RAS ALGETHI, universally known as one of the forefathers of funeral doom. Throughout the years, 5 CANAAN albums were published and all reached respectable sales figures and granted the band a large base of devote listeners and die-hard fans, establishing CANAAN as a respected and solid entity in the world of “obscure” music (commas mandatory). The band’s peculiar contamination of dark and ambient/experimental music led to an easily recognizable sound which was and still is in constant evolution; composing techniques have also been greatly modified over time: CANAAN eventually moved on (after having set up their own small recording-studio in 2003) to a schizophrenic process based on continuous improvisations, random de-constructions and accurate re-constructions. This method was used for the first time on “The unsaid words”, then refined through the NERONOIA experience. Shortly after the release of “The unsaid words”, CANAAN was in fact put under ice for a while and the creative flows were entirely channeled towards NERONOIA whose 2 albums were recorded and released in 2006 and 2008, with Gianni (Colloquio’s singer, and guest on Canaan albums too) singing on both and writing lyrics with Mauro – founder and mastermind of Canaan and the Eibon Label. In early 2009 Neronoia came to a stop (temporary or permanent, this is uncertain yet) so Mauro & fellows came back to the loving arms of CANAAN. New songs were composed and arranged, then – again – destructured and re-assembled at the band’s home-studio before the final mixdown & mastering, carefully done by Alessio Camagni at Noise Factory. The result is ‘Contro Luce’ – enjoy! Released on Eibon and available January 24th, 2011.
