Welcome to our weekly round-up of forthcoming releases. Jo and I are now back from our annual trip to Leipzig for WGT. Apologies for any delays, we’re working very hard to clear the backlog.
“Opus Magnus” is the first all-new studio album in five years by the German SM/gothic formation UMBRA ET IMAGO, and declared to be their last album EVER. The band delivers another album of ‘classic’ goth, SM, and dark metal attitude in twelve new songs, including the (digital only) single “Ohne Dich”. The ‘Fan Edition’ is strictly limited to 1,500 copies, and comes as very specially designed box set containing, in addition to the regular CD, a 60-page songbook, a tie, a more.
ZERAPHINE return after four years of silence with their new album “Whiteout”; an incredibly strong, multi-faceted and rich release. With their fifth studio album, the Berlin-based band deliver twelve new tracks of memorable melodies, catchy hooklines and harmonic atmospheres. The limited ‘Fan Edition’ comes in a six-panel digipak, including a special sixteen-page booklet and a bonus DVD.
Despite having split in 2008, THE MISSION return with “Dum Dum Bullet”, a new compilation of rare B-sides, previously unreleased demos, new songs left over from the “God Is a Bullet” sessions and a brand new extended remix of album cut “Dumb” by guitarist Mark Gemini Thwaite.
As the first in a series of retrospective compilations, THRILL KILL KULT have revisited their early ‘industrial’ roots with “Sinister Whisperz – Volume One: The Wax Trax Years (1987-1991)”, and have masterfully breathed new life into twelve of the most definitive TKK tracks from the band’s WAX TRAX RECORDS era. The CD also includes a previously unreleased track from that time called “Satana Rising”. The box set edition is limited to just 499 copies, and includes an exclusive bonus CD, two postcards and a bookmark!
EVILS TOY first saw the light of day in the summer of 1992, inspired by bands such as DEPECHE MODE, FRONT 242 and THE INVINCIBLE SPIRIT. Today, INFACTED RECORDINGS presents a 13-track first part ‘Best Of’ release in “Organics [Re-Issue]”, with an additional three unreleased bonus tracks and – as usual for their “Classics” series – limited to 1,000 copies worldwide!
“Vertraut” includes the original version of KLANGSTABIL’s most famous track, which captured the attention of listeners worldwide right from its first release on a compilation in 2002. In addition to that you will find eight other interpretations, and the release is then closed by the melancholic ambiance of “Zweiter Schritt” and “Ein Schritt Weiter”, which also mark the end of one of the most important chapters of KLANGSTABIL’s existence.
Since 1998, VON THRONSTAHL have remained one of the most appreciated and interesting groups on the martial industrial/neofolk scene. THE DAYS OF THE TRUMPET CALL is the neoclassical project of Raymond P., also a member of VON THRONSTAHL. “Pessoa/Cioran [Re-Issue]” is devoted the Portuguese poet Fernando Antonio Pessoa (1888-1935) and Romanian philosopher Emil Michel Cioran (1911-1995), whose writings were used as lyrics for the album.
SIEBEN is unique. The strings loop, the songs unfurl and the images in your head blossom. “Star Wood Brick Firmament” envelops you, its stories are rich in life and human warmth and, sometimes, cold reality. This is the mighty SIEBEN, better than ever. Every track is memorable, beautifully produced by the man himself, Matt Howden.
“Live in Leiden” by DER BLUTHARSCH is the third album in a series of live recordings. Recorded at “The Night of Confusion” on September 28th 2004, it was the ‘most controversial’ concert in the 40-year history of the venue. Nevertheless, this night was a huge success. This is the last live recording of the ‘old’ BLUTHARSCH – a small reminder about what the band were dreaded for before they morphed into ‘era two’ and turned into a dark psychedelic kraut monster – a MUST of all die-hard fans of this genre.
“It Was Listening with Mechanical Precision” is the long awaited third release from SHORAI, the Madrid based electronica act. The sound universe of SHORAI has become even more unique over the last few years and can be described somewhere between IDM, electronica, industrial sound design and a little ‘boing bumm tschak’.
Combining the brutal beats and the harsh programmed electronics of Terror-EBM with both classical and death metal influences, CEDIGEST have succeeded in a sound that genuinely crosses genre boundaries… “Symphonic Industrial Metal”. The amazing Japanese Limited Edition of “Walking in the Flesh” comes with the bonus CD “Falling in the Spirit”. Featuring eight brand-new original tracks, plus a clutch of previously unreleased remixes, this stunning disc illuminates still further the depth and diversity of CEDIGEST’s sound. Limited to 100 copies!!
And finally, a couple more compilations this week, brought to you by the number 10! “Forms of Hands 10” is being released for the tenth anniversary of the Festival and is a great collection of rhythm’n’noise, IDM and electronica. Artists include MONO NO AWARE, NULLVEKTOR, S.K.E.T., and GREYHOUND. The bestselling compilation series from UPSCENE is also back with its tenth volume. “Extreme Sundenfall Vol. 10” features a lot of tracks or versions that are EXCLUSIVE to this 2CD.

Review
First all-new studio album in years (the previous “Motus Animi” was released in 2005) by the German SM/gothic formation UMBRA ET IMAGO (Latin for ‘Shadow and Image’) and declared to be their last album EVER (as the band plan to concentrate on their live activities, and will continue to tour in the future).
UMBRA ET IMAGO were formed in 1991 and initially, as evidenced by their first two albums, were a genuine dark electro wave goth band. They then evolved into a gothic metal/Neue Deutsche Härte band. In picking up Sigmund Freud’s idea that sexuality was the centre of our being they processed sadomasochistic fantasies through their cynical lyrics. The band is famous for incorporating BDSM acts and complex pyrotechnics into their live shows. Band leader Mozart has subsequently reached the status of the undiscussed leader of a SM subculture in Germany, far across the borders of the ‘gothic’ scene. Recently he got much attention in the popular mainstream press thanks to a duet with boxing world champion Regina Halmich.
With “Opus Magnus” the band delivers another album of ‘classic’ goth, SM, and dark metal attitude in twelve new songs, including the (digital only) single “Ohne Dich”.

Despite having split in 2008, THE MISSION return with “Dum Dum Bullet”, a new compilation of rare B-sides, previously unreleased demos, new songs left over from the “God Is a Bullet” sessions and a brand new extended remix of album cut “Dumb” by MISSION guitarist Mark Gemini Thwaite.
The fourteen-track album features six songs originally released as extra tracks on the deleted “Keep It in the Family” EP and the “Blush” digital single, both from 2007. More intriguing to fans are seven tracks identified as new songs or Hussey demos written during the “God Is a Bullet” sessions. The compilation wraps up with Thwaite’s new seven-and-a-half-minute remix of “Dumb”. He states that he “decontructed the studio version and recreated a dancefloor monster with new sounds, loops and additional guitars”.

Sinister Whisperz – Volume One: The Wax Trax Years (1987-1991) |

£14.50 |

Review
As the first in a series of retrospective compilations, THRILL KILL KULT have revisited their early ‘industrial’ roots, and have masterfully breathed new life into twelve of the most definitive TKK tracks from the band’s Wax Trax Records era. The CD also includes a previously unreleased track from that time called “Satana Rising”.
Why remix such classics as “And This Is What the Devil Does” or “Kooler Than Jesus”? (to mention just two of their biggest hits). Think of it as TKK in a new, aural 3D-version… Or better yet – 4D, or beyond! From the call for drugs in “A Daisy Chain 4 Satan”, to the chants of Christian Zombie Vampires in “The Days of Swine and Roses”, every nuance is clearer, every drum beat pumps harder, and every sinister whisper speaks louder to your mind, body and soul.
“It was like visiting old friends after 20 years by remixing those songs”, says producer Buzz McCoy. “And it was nice to finally add some sonic sparkle to those dusty, old tracks!”
Tread where Angels fear to go! Take the journey all over again… Get lost (again) in the intoxicating, seductive and lurid realm that is truly, and only, MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT.

Review
EVILS TOY first saw the light of day in the summer of 1992, when future band members Volker Lutz and Thorsten Brenda were introduced to each another by a mutual friend. They started to work together instantly, finding that their existing equipment masterly complemented each other’s, so… the founding of an electro band was virtually an inevitable consequence. The two were inspired by bands such as DEPECHE MODE, FRONT 242 and THE INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, which meant that their concerted efforts soon bore their first fruits. Today almost eighteen(!) years later, Infacted Recordings presents a 13-track first part ‘Best Of’ release, with an additional three unreleased bonus tracks in remastered format and – as usual for their “Classics” series – limited to 1000 copies worldwide!

Klangstabil |
Vertraut |

|
£10.50 |
|
Review
This collection includes the original version of KLANGSTABIL’s most famous track, “Vertraut”, which captured the attention of listeners worldwide right from its first release on a compilation in 2002. In addition to that you will find eight other interpretations, demonstrating the versatility of work that can be extracted from the catchy, familiar motif. Some of the artists who have remixed the track have based their interpretation on intelligent dance music: the breakbeat-framed SOMATIC RESPONSES version, a hybrid of breakcore and IDM by U.S. project ACCESS TO ARASAKA, KEEF BAKER’s metric electro background, which turns into post-rock with dense guitars, and ARCHITECT’s Daniel Myer gives us dancefloor-capable pounder topped with a plausible new melody line to complement the original theme. Torben Wendt (DIORAMA) turns “Vertraut” into beautiful melodic body music, while SYNAPSCAPE keep the original track structure but replace the instrumentation and beats, turning the theme into a heavy electronic floorburner. KSDJ is Maurizio Blanco himself, adding some newly faceted rhythm patterns and melody lines, making his version a contemporary DJ anthem. The remix section is topped off by L’OMBRE from Canada, with lush ambient electronica at its finest.
The release is then closed by the melancholic ambiance of “Zweiter Schritt” and “Ein Schritt Weiter”, which also mark the end of one of the most important chapters of KLANGSTABIL’s existence. In 2002, the album “Kopfmusik” would have been published on Ant-Zen but only six tracks were produced to completion, one of which was “Vertraut”. The project was eventually renounced for personal reasons and “Vertraut” was the only track published in its original version. After “Kopfmusik” KLANGSTABIL started work almost immediately on “Taking nothing seriously” (2004) and incorporated some elements of “Kopfmusik” into it. The track “Ein Schritt weiter” is an early, incomplete version of “Away” from that album. Other elements of “Kopfmusik” can be heard in “Lauf, Lauf!” and “Beziehungsohr” from the album “Math & Emotion” (2008). This release is thus not a ‘regular’ album, but the end of the story for “Kopfmusik” and its history, which accompanied KLANGSTABIL for 10 years. Finally, that book is closed and put back on the shelf. Detailed information on “Vertraut” and “Kopfmusik” is included in the CD booklet.

Review
Since 1998, VON THRONSTAHL, led by founder and leader Josef M. Klumb, have remained one of the most appreciated and interesting groups on the martial industrial/neofolk scene. THE DAYS OF THE TRUMPET CALL is the neoclassical projectof Raymond P., also himself a member of VON THRONSTAHL. This split CD is devoted the Portuguese poet Fernando Antonio Pessoa (1888-1935) and Romanian philosopher Emil Michel Cioran (1911-1995), whose writings were used as lyrics for the album. The melancholic neoclassics from THE DAYS OF THE TRUMPET CALL and what is probably the strangest of all recordings by VON THRONSTAHL, combine to form a balance on the borders of neoclassics and ambient, with a light martial touch, as always enhanced by the beautiful and charismatic vocals of Josef E. vocals. Review
“Live in Leiden” by DER BLUTHARSCH is the third album in a series of live recordings – after “Live at the Monastery” and “Live in Copenhagen”. Recorded at “The Night of Confusion” on September 28th 2004 at the legendary LVC, it was the ‘most controversial’ concert in the 40-year history of this venue. Nevertheless, this night was a huge success. This is the last live recording of the ‘old’ Blutharsch – a small reminder about what DER BLUTHARSCH were dreaded for before they morphed into ‘era two’ and turned into a dark psychedelic kraut monster. This is a great live document of a concert from the band who invented ‘martial industrial’ as well as ‘military pop’ – a MUST of all die-hard fans of this genre as well as for people eager to know why this band was once considered so ‘dangerous’…

After the albums “Sounds without Souls”, “40 Minutes into the Future” as well as many shows such as Maschinenfest, Forms of Hands and DeciBelio, here is the long awaited third release from this Madrid based electronica act. It’s a musical journey through virtual spaces from intelligent laser drills over hyper cubes to artificial sunsets. The sound universe of SHORAI has become even more unique over the last few years and can be described somewhere between IDM, electronica, industrial sound design and a little boing bumm tschak. “It Was Listening with Mechanical Precision” includes ten tracks and each is exactly 5:00 minutes long: the recommended dose for both robots and human beings!

Combining the brutal beats and harsh programmed electronics of Terror-EBM with both classical and death metal influences, CEDIGEST have succeeded spectacularly at something that acts like PSYCLON NINE and DAWN OF ASHES could only dream of: a perfect fusion of styles resulting in a sound that genuinely crosses genre boundaries… “Symphonic Industrial Metal”.
The amazing Japanese Limited Edition of “Walking in the Flesh” comes with the bonus CD “Falling in the Spirit”, mastered by the legendary Jan L of NOISUF-X. Featuring eight brand-new original tracks, plus a clutch of previously unreleased remixes from the likes of PANIC LIFT, ACYLUM and DIE SEKTOR, this stunning disc illuminates still further the depth and diversity of CEDIGEST’s sound, all the more incredible considering this band are still newcomers to the industrial scene!
The first 100 units only of this unique 2CD package are presented in six-panel digipak format, with artwork redesigned by DWA from the NoiTekk original. The eight-panel booklet (expanded from the four-panel NoiTekk original) features the previously unpublished lyrics in full. A beautiful and feature-packed collector’s set, from one of THE bands to watch in 2010!

Heliogabal |

Review
From ancient history and forward into modern posterity, the name of Heliogabal a.k.a. Elagabal has become the symbol of the Roman iron age’s vice and decadence as well as of how oriental influences were fatal to this culture. A massive conflict between conservative Romans and those who followed the Syrian religious traditions overshadowed Heliogabal’s reign. His rule disastrously failed due to the absence of a give-and-take philosophy and a lack of understanding of the duties involved with wielding the power of a Roman emperor. After the Greek mythology of his last album “Nyx”, Mathis Mootz took Heliogabal’s life as an inspiration for this release which marks the tenth anniversary of SQUAREMETER. Mootz’ skills for creating unbearable tension and covering all bases between absolute silence right up to vibrating choirs and distant industrial outbursts are clear on this album. “Heliogabal” is an intermixture of hypnotic deep drones, haunting basses and disturbing soundscapes. Cinematic field recordings, intermittent hypnotic sequencer loops and urgent eruptions of sound merge into an incredible collection of atmospheric dark ambient tracks. This album might be useful as an imaginary trip into a sable, a cruel past where man had the potential of being a god – before finally being disgraced!

Review
One year after “Pellicules”, MIKA GOEDRIJK (THIS MORN’ OMINA/POW(D)ER PUSSY) presents the next aural view of his inner self with “Looking-Glass World”. Musically, the conceptual shift into the world of ambient IBM sounds is evident. Well-placed patterns enriched with mellow guitar slides (“Dead Air”), melancholic piano lines (“At the 11th Hour”), a distinctive (nearly) APHEX-TWIN synth (“White Sand Semantics”), archaic trumpet calls (“Lost Decade”), pounding breakbeats with pulsing sub-bass (“Rusty Swiss Army Knife”, “Le Grand Mal”), make this release a fascinating blend of contemporary electronic tones. “Looking-Glass World” is an album of otherworldly ambience entwined with a blend of acoustic sounds and sheets of sequenced patterns. A highly aesthetic sonic universe, where moods and mastery melt into warm, repetitive arrangements. Have a look into the looking-glass world.

Review
Their debut album “Disease” last year was a very well accepted and highly praised introduction to the sound of MINUSHEART. Now they are back with “Healed”, a fully packed remix album featuring seventeen mixes of songs from the debut. The concept is divided into two parts: “Hospitalisation” and “Disinfection”. Both parts prove quite impressively, that the unique compositions of MINUSHEART can be transformed into various styles of industrial and electro soundscapes. The first part contains the more dance and club-orientated versions, done by projects/bands like ART DEKO, MONOSYS, DESTROID and MENSCHLICHE ENERGIE, whereas the second part is more industrial/experimental based with remixes by ACCESSORY, KLANGSTURM and ALTER DER RUINE. Again mastered by Dirk ACCESSORY Steyer, who pushed the tracks to maximum power and crystal clear sound.

Forget the Past |

Review
René Klimaczweski aka MORBUS M. presents dark, forceful and threading electronica and in some subtle ways also a very hypnotic and attracting album. On one hand his tracks have an intense atmosphere, on the other hand there is always a groove or a repetitive structure. Industrial trip-hop rhythms and electronica sound design meet electronic soundtrack tradition. Media samples, field-recordings and beat structures build up finally towards an atmosphere that is almost too intense and deep.
In total “Forget the Past” is an album that breaks the borders of genres and is an emotional trip into the inner apocalypse. Packaged in a Hands Paper Pack.

Review
Synth pioneer and former ULTRAVOX singer JOHN FOXX marks the 30th anniversary of the release of his solo debut “Metamatic” with a new 2CD+DVD retrospective called “Metatronic” – as well as a special ‘analog’ concert in London next month with guest DJ Gary Numan.
“Metatronic” focuses on the darker, electro material from his 30-year solo career and features 21 singles, remixes and other cuts chosen by Foxx himself – including “No-One Driving”, “This City”, “Burning Car” and a new mix of his first single, “Underpass”, by MARK REEDER – as well as eight live tracks recorded in Sydney in 2008 and a DVD containing seven promo videos.
On June 5 at London’s Roundhouse, Foxx will headline and curate the electronic music festival Short Circuit 2010. Following a DJ set by Numan and co-producer Ade Fenton, Foxx and ‘a one-off group of special guests’ are billed to perform ‘a unique analog synthesizer show’, playing the Moogs, ARPs and drum machines Foxx used on 1980’s Metamatic. Foxx’s set is expected to include cuts from “Metamatic” as well as early ULTRAVOX songs, plus some of the musician’s current work, including a brand new collaboration with LEFTFIELD’s Paul Daley and songs from this autumn’s JOHN FOXX & THE MATHS debut album, an all-analog project with London musician Benge.

Review
The second unholy union of Lord NORDVARGR (MZ.412, FOLKSTORM, TOROIDH, etc.) and GOAT (USA).
Time, pilgrimages and bloodlines have been born since the first testament of GOATVARGR was witnessed in this era of false knowledge. The first covenant of GOATVARGR was baleful, lycanthropic and lethiferous. A rejection of the techgnostic kingdom and circuitry idols which seduce our era. The downfall of light has brought a world of coldness. This “Black Snow Epoch” is a time to honour our forbearers such as MZ.412 and the elements of flesh, wood and alchemical steel.
Industrial loops and analogue keyboards merge with sheet metal and chains to create a solemn winter hymn where the cold steel stings your flesh. The wolf instinctively hunts through the frost, and the goat is blamed for human transgressions, yet during the “Black Snow Epoch”, the true hunters will pursue.

Review
Gothenburg based duo KOPFER KAT (Michael Andresen and Jimmy Andersson) are without a doubt the hardest release Progress Productions has ever unleashed. Many people will most likely know them from the well known label compilations “Born/Evolve/Progress”. Even though KOPFER KAT were actually one of the first bands to be signed to Progress, the debut album has taken a long long time to be produced and recorded, as these guys do not compromise over the quality of their material! But finally it now sees the light of day.
KOPFER KAT’s music can be described as noise-driven club music that truly hits you like a fist straight in the face. The uncompromising driving beats and rhythms will knock you for six. Fans of early SONAR, WINTERKÄLTE, IMMINENT STARVATION, MANUFACTURA, ASCHE, TERRORFAKT and similar acts will have the feast of their lives… One of the hardest, most straight forward, no bullshit rhythmical noise albums in a loooooong time!

Two years after the release of “In Exile”, NOBLESSE OBLIGE release their third album “Malady”, an occult concept album that cites the visual mysticism of Kenneth Anger, Aleister Crowley’s storytelling, and the morbid melancholy of Christina Rossetti’s poetry. The album’s title, inspired by Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s film “Tropical Malady”, a modern day ghost story set in the jungle of Thailand, symbolises mental afflictions and dark temptations of the heart expressed in eerie tales of Voodoo gods, soul electrification, and tropical fevers.
Further inspiration was the Voodoo literature by Haitian writer Rene Depestre and readings of field research work by anthropologist E.E. Evans-Pritchard and his studies of witchcraft and magic among African tribes. The aura of these texts and stories have been incorporated in many of the new songs while Valerie, who during her teenage years lived on the French Carribean island of Martinique – one of the heartlands of Voodoo pratice – worked up her own memories of myths and stories told by the locals, including her Voodoo priestess neighbour. Fittingly, the production of the album also features several exotic ingredients such as timbales and ukulele in continuation of the band’s use of world music sounds, mixed with their tradional blend of kitsch and new wave theatricality – for as dark its subject matter is, “Malady” contains some NOBLESSE OBLIGE’s most melodic and poppy moments yet.
Just like its predecessor, “Malady” was recorded at the band’s own studio in Berlin. Using voices, acoustic guitar, drum machine, live percussion and only sparse electronics, it features N.O.’s most stripped down and acoustic production to date, based on a series of live-take recordings and minimal post-production. The album artwork features photography made in collaboration with Bulgarian artist Kiril Bikov, who has accurately captured “Malady”‘s romantic gloom, incorporating all the elements referred to on the album.

Review
Third album by this electro-industrial band, who have had an overwhelming response to their first two albums!
Formed in 2005, EDEN SYNTHETIC CORPS started getting rave reviews all over the internet for their early songs and signed a record deal with Scanner just a couple of months after their formation. Their debut album “Matte” (2006) was enthusiastically received by the entire alternative community and the word was spread all over that there was finally an electro-industrial band from Portugal worth listening to!
ESC always tried their best to sound unique among hundreds of clones and they achieved a new level of identity when they released “Enhancer”, a conceptual album, narrating the story of a serial killer on a woman-killing spree. The artwork was widely considered as one of its genre and the album followed the path of “Matte” by getting great reviews from the press and great feedback from fans.
“Eight Thousand Square Feet” features yet another concept, portrayed as comic strips on the artwork of the luxurious digipak packaging. Without a doubt, this represents ESC’s most intense album to date, also featuring guest appearances from Carsten Jacek of [:SITD:] and Jan L. from X-FUSION. If you like intense beats, a spine-tingling atmosphere and dark harsh vocals, you mustn’t miss this brilliant re-confirmation of ESC’s excellence!

Review
Becoming older is an inevitable fact of life – one that has some good aspects, mostly appreciated only beyond a certain age though… If everything goes right, you become wiser. You know what you want. Your inner peace and balance is no longer easily disturbed. And somehow you realize, that looking behind the curtain is an effort worth making. But what has this to do with BLOODY DEAD AND SEXY? Quite simple; five years ago, the German band released a State of the Art dark rock album named “Narcotic Room”, which incorporated the deathrock-elements of the early phase of the band. Combined with the finest songwriting and a very solid production, the very original sound boosted the band into the next millennium.
And now? Now it is 2010. The second decade of the 21st century has just begun and BDAS are all but tired. “An Eye on You” is the greatest longplayer of the band of four. Only the finest ingredients are stirred in, in a smooth and relaxed way, and with an extravagance that could be perceived to be the excessive coolness of the four gentlemen concerned!
Starting with the smart-riffed opener “Solemn Times”, coming across the cold-rocking “City Ghosts” and the well-known, but incomparably excellent sounding “Reaping Day”, via the dark-floor smasher of “Candy Box” to the three-part epic work “Three Corners of an Eye”, it all makes perfect sense! Never before has music sounded so free and at the same time so dashing, full of neglect for all stylistic borders. Hardcore fans of the early days will be delighted that a German song named has “Der Kuss” made its way onto the record of this eight-legged band. It dovetails perfectly with the band’s other German anthems “Frau im See” and “Traurig”.
“An Eye on You” is already the one and only full-length album for all fans of distinct dark and natural rock, no matter whether you call the final product gothic, wave, deathrock or alternative rock. And BLOODY DEAD AND SEXY will perform this album for the first time live at the world’s biggest dark music festival – the 19th WGTreffen in Leipzig, Germany. Welcome back, boys! You were missed.

Review
Stop it! Enough is enough! The never-ending wimps of ‘yesterday’s sound’, ‘dusty sound’ and ‘music from the tomb’ – all bullshit. In a time when narrow-minded krautrock is sold as gothic, techno-rave claims to be ‘the next big thing’ and one is still desperately searches for the connection between bagpipes and dark-wave, along come Northern Irish trio SOLEMN NOVENA, releasing a debut album that captures the essence of Goth.
Guitars sounding like they’re from outer space – sometimes atmospherically floating, sometimes aggressively cutting, but without the old metal-riff cliché. A drum computer that sets a cool yet stoical beat, bass pounding deep inside your stomach, so that music can literally be felt again. This is what they stand for. SOLEMN NOVENA are frontwoman LOUISE CRANE (by far the sexiest goth-singer ever…), guitarist, singer and mastermind MARC McCOURT (already known as Dominic LaVey of the UK Vampire Goths NOSFERATU and member of 90s underground heroes RETURN TO KHAF’JI) and bass player Stuart Harland. For years, demos of this Belfast trio have been circulating on the underground. Songs like the heavenly “Siren” easily conquered dance floors from London to Berlin, from L.A. to Athens. Unsurprisingly, it was time for an official debut release, frequently asked for after the exclusive German live debut in 2008 at the “Sex & Drugs & Drum Machines” festival in Berlin.
“Kiss the Girls” does everything right. SOLEMN NOVENA extract the finest ingredients of style legends like ROSETTA STONE, ALL ABOUT EVE and the aforementioned NOSFERATU to develop an individual sound that fits harmonically into the second decade of the 21st century. Tracks like “Ruined”, as well as the (digitally released) single “Silver”, “Trick or Treat”, the title song and “Siren (2009)” are ready to show the world out there that Goth can be cool and far more than the ‘usual stuff’ being released under that moniker these days! It still breathes the spirit of dark rock music and is still able to simply touch your soul.
SOLEMN NOVENA will present “Kiss the Girls” live for the first time at this year’s WGT in Leipzig! 2010 UK Goth, thy name is SOLEMN NOVENA.

Review
Of all the major alternative rock bands of the early 90s, SMASHING PUMPKINS were the group least influenced by traditional underground rock. Lead guitarist/songwriter Billy Corgan fashioned an amalgam of progressive rock, heavy metal, goth rock, psychedelia and dream pop, creating a layered, powerful sound driven by swirling, distorted guitars. SMASHING PUMPKINS became the model for alternative rock success. “Teargarden by Kaleidyscope Vol. 1″ is the first chapter in the Pumpkins’ long-awaited 44-song concept album featuring four new tracks housed in a limited edition box. This is the much demanded and long overdue re-release of an extremely rare album from VON THRONSTAHL, originally released in 2002. The album was strictly limited to 500 hand-numbered copies and came in very special packaging: the CD was mounted on a glass plate inside a 6″ black box with gold-embossed logo and title on the front. Regarded as one of the most original and finest VON THRONSTAHL CDs, this is the first time that this long-lost album has been re-released.
All tracks have been digitally re-mastered making them sound much fresher than ever! Furthermore, this special re-release comes with a second CD, densely packed with rare remixes, different versions of well known tracks and a number of previously unreleased, exclusive tracks!
The packaging this time is a little more modest, but still quite lavish: a deluxe 2CD digipak inside a beautiful cardboard-slider with gold print.

Review
Great British band (from Liverpool) created at the begining of 80s by Jayne Casey (former singer of PINK MILITARY) and Ambrose Reynolds (bass player and founder of the legendary FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD). Tadzio was later drafted in on guitar. The band mixes new wave and experimental sounds with sexy vocals.
During their career, PINK INDUSTRY made three full albums, some 12″ singles and one 7″, and recorded four Peel Sessions for the BBC. They split up in 1987 with Jayne going on to work in the business side of the music industry and Ambrose working on new music project USL, whilst Tadzio simply disappeared. Now, after almost 30 years since the band’s creation, here is a new compilation bringing together a wide selection of material, some of it previously unreleased, all of it completely remastered. Includes classics like “What I Wouldn’t Give”, “Pain of Pride”, “The Corpse” and “Empty Beach” – not to be missed!

Review
By releasing this exclusive picture vinyl edition of NITZER EBB’s latest album “Industrial Complex”, Black Rain continue their successful vinyl series, in which there are some great and well-known predecessors to this release, like WELLE ERDBALL, FEINDFLUG, DIE PERLEN and more.
When Douglas McCarthy and Bon Harris formed a band in 1982 and started to record their first demos, they didn’t yet know that they were writing music history. Their sound was raw and unpolished, an electronic adaptation of the dying punk movement. With minimal funding, drums, a sequencer and McCarthy’s penetrating voice, they quickly came to stand as a synonym for a significant new musical genre: Electronic Body Music (or EBM for short). Through seminal albums such as “That Total Age”, “Belief” and “Ebbhead”, they continued to beat their own unique path, until they parted company after ten years.
However, this was not the end and recent reunion shows have proven that there is life still in the old ghost. As brilliant and relevant today as ever, they are now back with a brand new studio album, “Industrial Complex”. Opening with a rousing bassline, reminiscent of the wonderful “Murderous”, the opening track “Promises” sets the tone. McCarthy’s voice varies from offensive to fragile, with an arrangement rich in detail, edginess and energy. This album is like a bridge back in time to the 80s. Without doubt, this is the work of NITZER EBB, with the same level of complexity that characterises all their work, traversing the years to create a new modern sound for the present.
This special edition includes an exclusive remix by FEINDFLUG of the NITZER EBB track “Once You Say”, featuring the backing vocals from Martin Gore! Strictly limited to 500 numbered copies.

Third single from RAMMSTEIN’s acclaimed sixth studio album “Liebe Ist für Alle Da” – a record that has topped the charts all over the world – and follow-up to the much talked about “Pussy” and “Ich Tu Dir Weh” singles and videos.
Since starting out 15 years ago, RAMMSTEIN have built up a reputation as a controversial, no-compromise, hugely successful and entertaining outfit, with a fiercely loyal and genuinely international following. Today, they stand head and shoulders above the competition as the greatest (musical) showmen on earth, with an incendiary stage performance that generally results in tickets for their concerts selling out in minutes.
In keeping with the RAMMSTEIN tradition of delivering top quality, value-for-money packages, the CD single will be a digipak housing an exclusive selection of bonus mixes.

Review
“Immortel”, DERNIÈRE VOLONTÉ’s fifth studio album has been four years in the making and marks their fifteenth anniversary as a band.
It is a huge development from the former style which redefines the term ‘military pop’ to a more homogeneous, less neo-classical but much more modern sound. More electronic but organic at the same time, the new album re-invents this style of music, which has been a huge influence on Geoffroy D since his early days. The themes on “Immortel” are affected by Geffroy’s books, movies and personal experiences, but also reflect in general his personal feelings about beloved people and their spirits – that which is, and always will be, present in our souls and memories.
“Immortel” is another milestone in the ouevre of one of France’s most interesting bands from the underground scene and will certainly attract fans from the early days as well as appealing to a lot of new fans from other musical scenes.

Review
A great compilation of songs, many of them specially recorded for this the third volume in Infrastition’s “Transmission” series.
The third volume is entirely dedicated to Ian Kevin Curtis, legendary leader and singer of JOY DIVISION, who passed away 30 years ago. These eighteen recordings the result of deep devotion from the participating artists to the work and life of a singer who died at far too young an age and who left a lasting hole in the music scene.
“Transmission” 3 is a sort of ‘French incarnation’ of this deep devotion to a musician and to a band who have influenced the dark and electronic music scenes for over 30 years. Many big names from the French alternative scene contributed and the tracklist reads like a “who’s who” of the French coldwave scene of the 80s and 90s!

The Netherlands, Holland to some (though incorrectly – Holland is just a part of The Netherlands), the lowlands by the North Sea. Clogs, windmills, tulips, dikes and (semi-)legal soft drugs. And in the 80s, mass unemployment, a strong anti-nuke campaign and squatting: the perfect, solid basis for making your own music. No pressure for time or money. As the Dutch writer Martin Bril once noted: “in the 80s we were all on the dole, bought a record, made cassettes of it for all our friends and did a nice hand coloured cover around it” – which is perhaps a happier remembrance of the 80s than something grey and dull.
If there is anything that connects the musicians on this collection, it’s this shared background. The ‘do-it-yourself’ ethic, an aesthetic of (post-)punk which runs through all of this, and not just in regard to music, but also in organising your own fun. NEXDA with their cassette shop and stage Studio 12 in Haarlem, or YOUNG LIONS’ Harold Schellinx with Wally van Middendorp of MINNY POPS and their “Ultra” series.
After twenty-five years hardly anyone on this compilation creates music like this; everybody went on to pursue other interests, inside or outside music. But then lots of these musicians started in a completely different place too: THE VISITOR were once a folk band, members of MEKANIK KOMMANDO played jazz rock, while members of NEXDA were busking in France (and after NEXDA went back to just doing that).
Following mass unemployment and nuclear threat, we all went on to get a job, a house and shares. But it’s hardly a surprise that this compilation arrives at the lowest economic ebb since… well, the 80s. It’s the paradox of the new economy, the job, the house and the shares. This is hardly a movement as such, hardly cold wave, but mere garage music (rather than the home tapers in their bedrooms), side-stepping pop music. Cold wave? It’s no longer the 80s, it’s 2010. The coldest winter in years, still a cold Dutch wave.

The Mannequin and Infrastition labels are always searching for forgotten and truly awesome gems from the 80s underground. Here, they introduce this great post punk band, based in Harrislee (Germany) which was in existance from June 1984 until August 1986 – splitting after a few live appearances in Flensburg and Kiel. TASTE OF DECAY recorded two Tapes, but their most important publication was “The Calling”, a self-produced 7″ EP with five tracks, nowdays nearly impossible to find. This CD is a re-issue of that EP from 1986, plus their first demo tape from 1984.

Review
The tracks on “Daas” have been carefully picked to form a provoking, haunting journey. What they all have in comon is a sense of nostalgic graininess. As with the music of PHILIP JECK, THE CARETAKER and WILLIAM BASINSKI, these tracks are full of degrading melodies and dusty ambience.
“Daas” is the previously unreleased opening track of the album, and feautures contributions by the great RICHARD SKELTON. This track was made as a reaction to the piece “Koploop”. “Flotter”, “Koploop” and “Grom” were previously available on small run self-released 3″ CDRs. Sold out for some time now, these tracks deserved a wider audience. They seem to have come from the same galaxy, making perfect sense when put together. “Onkruid” was a track previously released on “A Room Forever”, as an expensive and extremely limited 12″ boxset – also now brought to a wider audience.
Packaged in a four-panel matt digipak.

Review
Quite possibly the final release for this tumultuous force in U.S. power electronics. This release features artwork created specifically for the disc by Nick Blinko (RUDIMENTARY PENI). F/I/T/H was conceived as a cathartic outlet to explore and ratify the delusions and social perversions resultant of psychosis and the darker side of man’s conflicted dual nature. Guest artists include Nick Blinko (RUDIMENTARY PENI) on vocals and J. Randall (AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED) on additional electronics.

Review
After a long hiatus of twelve years without any official new releases, German cult band SWEET WILLIAM (known for acclaimed releases on Hyperium and Dion Fortune) strike back with a splendid new CD! It is packed with 68 minutes of all-new material, in the form of fourteen tracks of dark electronic rock music combined with typical SWEET WILLIAM psychedelic elements that take you on a journey through the depths of the human emotional condition.
The music changes from track to track – telling stories of lost souls and stories of hope, followed by songs that let the world shine again by creating warm and shimmering atmospheres. Electronic elements, loops combined with real drums, guitars, driving bass lines, strings, pianos and the characteristic vocals come together to form to a musical experience that is hard to find these days. You’ll hear slow, smooth pieces spilling over into fast electronic numbers, tracks of longer than six minutes as well as pop-art songs of just three and half. The new SWEET WILLIAM album “Brighter Than the Sun” shows the many faces of this band, the ability to surprise the listener with new elements while never leaving the typical sound that they’ve forged during their long existence. Don’t miss this great and surprising come-back!

Nos Chants Perdus |

Review
Over a series of remarkable concept albums, the Luxembourgish band ROME have developed a totally unique ‘poetry of longing’ which rings out from a dark melancholic mist of rootlessness and which gives expression to a comprehensive feeling of modern forlornness.
The protagonists of ROME’s music are the unintentional ‘rebels’ of Camus (“The Rebel”; original title “L’Homme Révolté”), contemporaries from the turbulent epochs of the 20th century: the banished and the hunted; the despised and the misunderstood – always enemies of dictatorship. This is what the songs of Jerome Reuter are about, firmly in the tradition of his declared heroes JACQUES BREL and LÉO FERRÉ, (on earlier albums also TOM WAITS and NICK CAVE). As regards content, ROME are inspired by world literature and the observant listener will be able to detect references to and quotations from Albert Camus, Marcel Proust, Jean-Paul Satre and Jean Genet serving to create a new kind of intertextuality between word and sound.
Following on from their EP “L’Assassin” ROME assiduously develop their sound further on the minimalistic, simple singer-songwriter album “Nos Chants Perdus”, slowly leaving the apocalyptic realms behind them. Catchy melodies, which exude the timeless atmosphere of the metropolis on the Seine, impress themselves on the memory. The sonorous voice bears the weltschmerz as well as the yearning for freedom and peace. Despite the French songtitles the lyrics are primarily performed in English, while the music is constructed primarily with acoustic instruments: piano, guitar, touches of strings, accordion. The band have largely relinquished electronic elements, which marks this album out as a further stride in the work of this act.
“Nos Chants Perdus” by ROME is an exceptional and valuable example of the art of singer-songwriting, the likes of which hasn’t been heard in this concentration and with such gravity for a long time.
The strictly limited first edition comes as a CD in digibook format – a hardcover book bound in linen with special black hotfoil debossing, a 40-page additional booklet, plus a semi-matte art print on high-quality paper and with elaborate “Singer” thread stitching. Includes all lyrics and photographs by Achim Webel.

Review
RHOMBUS are regarded as one of the finest goth rock bands to emerge from England in many years. Mixing male and female vocals with swirling guitars and driving bass, they combine some of the best elements of traditional 80s/90s UK goth with their own, more modern, distinctive approach. The songs are well crafted and catchy, possessing both depth and a sharp sense of humour.
The latest album “Open the Sky” takes the band to a new level. Now with a settled line-up bringing an additional songwriter to the group, this album was written and produced by all four members together over last year. Each of the four brings a myriad of different styles to the melting pot with plenty of light and shade, poignancy, power and passion. The production is the best RHOMBUS have delivered so far, thanks in no small part to Stephen Carey (THE EDEN HOUSE) coming on board to handle the mixing duties.
Rhombus play Goth Rock and are proud to do so. “Open the Sky” is definitely set to be one of the most exciting releases of 2010.

Review
During the past five years DECODED FEEDBACK have gone through the most difficult time in their history. After release of their last album release “Combustion” on Out of Line in 2005, the Canadian duo had to venture forth along a twisted alley full of private setbacks. But as is often the case, personal crises can trigger the strongest creative energies.
Crackling with such renewed powers, DECODED FEEDBACK now unleash “Aftermath”, an utterly remarkable and intense album. We stand in awe of their unmistakable combination of pulsating basslines and angelic synth melodies (as witnessed on “Silent Killer” and “Proteus Syndrome”), as well as nostalgic references to the old school dark wave of the 80s (“Dark Reflections”, “Shelter Me”), and sprinkling of electropop (“Affliction”). Full-bodied and varied, “Aftermath” stands between feelings and moods with unexpected sonic landscapes. Never before could it be said that DECODED FEEDBACK have been this melodically oriented as they are now in 2010. Even in this project’s 17th year of existence, there is no lack of innovation or variation. It should also now be obvious to everyone that this project are at the top league in sound engineering, as is the case with most ensembles from the Canadian electronic scene.
Faithful fans will be delighted to hear on “Aftermath” exactly what they expected to find on DECODED FEEDBACK’s latest album and will undoubtedly also be won over by its enriching new influences. This release is also certain to gain the admiration and accolade of new listeners unfamiliar with the band, and in so doing, will bolster their popularity by several more orders of magnitude.

Review
Nothing exceeds like EXS. Or so Brit-Industrial mavericks UBERBYTE would insist.
Their third album stands as a defiantly different, brutal beast of a record. Far heavier than their prior work and possessed of a supercharged attitude that propels their music into unexpected realms of twisted weirdness and aggression. Without a doubt one of the most controversial and devisive records of 2010.
Citing punk ethics, powernoise aggression and electro grooves, UBERBYTE have gone out their way to create an unpredictable collection of material that swaggers between the tongue-in-cheek and rip-snorting psychosis. Raw and personal, and unwilling to play by any rule book, be prepared for a release that will pummel the listener into submission through a vicious streak unlike any other.
There’s never quite been a record like it. Economic and imaginative by turn, this is uneasy listening of the most disturbing kind. Powered by one of the scene’s most deranged imaginations and leaking bitterness, rage and insanity, “EXS” is here. Prepare to feel the pain.

Rogai Por Nós, Pecadores! [Brazilian Import] |

Review
Two years after their debut album “10% for Jesus”, the Brazilian band PECADORES are back with a new CD.
To understand the band’s concept one must learn about its general context: PECADORES isn’t only music, it’s theatre, behaviour, and social criticism. It’s impossible to fit PECADORES’ sonority into any style previously known. PECADORES go far beyond pigeonholes, and the band themselves don’t classify their music as either EBM or industrial. Although it has an electronic basis, the style is very diverse; it goes from goth to industrial to electro and back again. The lyrics tell a lot about the reality of Brazilian religions which very often exploits the poorest and most desperate people, those looking for miracles to sort out their problems. Opportunism feeding on ignorance.
However, the band also possess a great sense of humour, usually a dark one, as demonstrated the tone of the lyrics, and the nature of their live concerts, which are attended by a legion of fans in PECADORES’ homeland. These live concerts are the band’s highlight. In a musical environment where lack of creativity very often prevails, PECADORES create a unique musicality from different elements, bringing something new to the underground scene, including lots of samples taken from local cults and Brazilian percussion together with electronic drums. Listeners will find Brazilian mysticism in PECADORES’ peculiar songs, never seen before in the goth/industrial scene.

Review
Berlin-based muscle man Roger Baptist is RUMMELSNUFF, a combination of testosterone-laden body building aesthetics, brute maritime romanticism and comic-book hero; a strange, yet fascinating icon who spawns a steadily-growing fan base and has generated quite some buzz in the press.
Two years after releasing his debut album, the captain is on the air again with fifteen songs of even greater stylistic and instrumental variety than on his first outing. Be it the sad but beautiful shanty “Salzig Schmeckt der Wind”, the synthetic rockabilly sound of “Donnerbolzen” or the rough electronic culture of songs like “Eindruck schinden”, “Pumper” and “Winterlied”, Baptist is happily ignoring all standard genre boundaries while sporting a thoroughly identifiable and unique sound.
Basing his music on a minimal electro foundation that he effectively garnishes with all sorts of sonic experiments, a healthy dose of weirdness and his trademark hoarse voice, RUMMELSNUFF is one of the most unique acts in German-language popular music. The pre-album release digital single “Freier Fall”, for instance, sounds as if MAX SCHMELING, TOM WAITS, DER PLAN and RAMMSTEIN have come together to record a collaborative song. “Sender Karlshorst” will be broadcasting its raw “Strom-Musik” on all frequencies from May 14!

Review
After a hiatus of more than ten years, Belgian cult-Electro-group Signal Aout 42 return with a Brand new album ! In the 80’s and early 90’s, SA 42 ( along with their compatriots, Front 242 ) helped shape the budding EBM / Electro scene with a seamless array of club hits that included classics such as “Waterdome”, “Dead Is Calling” and “Submarine Dance”…
Their “Immortal Collection” release bore the catalogue number OUT 001 ( thus kick starting Germany’s premiere Electro label Out Of Line ) and as such this comeback is a rather special one for Out of Line. SA 42 return with a double release on “Transformation” revigorating their trademark sound over the duration of two CD’s that still sounds as fresh and innovative as when they first started out, more than twenty years ago. Massive soundscapes evolve into hard hitting EBM-onslaughts with hammering sequencers, often crossing the border into harder Industrial realms. The raw and dark voice of Jacky Meurisse has not lost any of its special appeal and the band easily outdo most Electro pretenders with their energetic and dynamic presence. Signal Aout 42 have retained two qualities that so many bands lack today : a characteristic identity and a distinctive sound… one that will still shake any club and that builds up an atmosphere that few can match.
