Gnaw Their Tongues transcend genres, creating their own distinct sound. Descriptors include ambient black metal, funeral doom metal, industrial drone etc. Instrumentation relies heavily on keyboards and percussion, with the drumming looming in the distance like a hideous parade before a battle is set loose. Monk-like choirs, industrial emanations, bizarre samples, occasional shrieks and droning, abused guitars are all on display, brought together almost unwillingly to share the same stage. Lyrically, L’Arrivee de la Terne Mort Triomphante is a concept album about death (“morte”). Songs describe the white throne of death, address the song of death and praise death’s majesty and grandeur. For many listeners, “L’Arrivee de la Terne Mort Triomphante” will be little more than noise or frustratingly dull drone. However, fans of the outré of the genre, where bands such as Sunn O))) and Throbbing Gristle practice their art, will find much to uncover and savour. Under the anger and fear there is joy, sadness, selfishness, and self-discovery. All you have to do is let these find you. Black vinyl in a deluxe gatefold sleeve.

Sumptuous double vinyl treatment of this 2009 album (Neurot Recordings). Harvestman is the brainchild of Neurosis vocalist / guitarist Steve Von Till, who considers “In A Dark Tongue” a venture into an imagined past. The album is inspired by Hawkwind, Fairport Convention, Tangerine Dream, Pentangle, Steeleye Span, Skullflower, Caspar Brotzman and Loop, among others. It is a massive meeting point of styles and influences, all of which boil down to a surreal and inspired sound. The first Harvestman record, “A Grave Is A Grim Horse”, was a dizzying confluence of delicate 70s British style folk, shimmery spaced out drift and glacial doom-drone sprawl, a constantly evolving, organic song suite that seemed to exist in some glorious blissed out druggy spacefolk otherworld. On “In A Dark Tongue”, the glimmering strands of traditional folk music that had tethered the first record become even more tenuous. Black vinyl in a deluxe gatefold sleeve.

The second album from Portuguese act Hexperos pays homage to the queen of fairies and dreams, a creation of Anglo-Saxon mythology, with roots in Celtic legends, referred in works by numerous artists, from Shakespeare or Percy Shelley to Gustave Doré. Hexperos once again combine classical and contemporary approaches to chamber music, incorporating Celtic, Mediterranean, Medieval and Baroque elements in a meticulously crafted and varied opus. Pressed on gold disc and housed in a matt-varnished digipak with gold foil print, “The Veil of Queen Mab” comes with a 16-page booklet beautifully illustrated with visuals by Polish artist Malgorzata Maj (Sarachmet Photography & Illustration).

“Demain, c’était Hier” perpetuates Les Fragments De La Nuit’s timeless musical quest, blending the radiance of the stars with the dark forces that lurk in the Night. The French ensemble have kept faithful to their trademark style, in which pulsing piano chords set the pace for the string-work woven by cello and violin, haunted by female choirs. The album holds quiet, melancholy-driven moments, that flow into stirring, violent passages and ceremonial atmospheres. The band take contemporary / Neoclassical music beyond its typical standards, recalling the works of composers like Steve Reich, Philip Glass or Arvo Pärt with those of formations such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Balanescu Quartet or even the sinister cult-band Magma. A unique musical universe that takes form in an overpowering nocturnal masterpiece. 6-panel digipak.

These two tracks are probably some of the most ecstatic pieces to have emerged from the Norwegian duo. This new blitz 7″ sounds almost as improvised as composed: no hesitation, no failures, no rest, just overheating and broken drum sticks. This is Moha! possessed by a powerful light, spreading the remains of free Jazz, noise, arcade games vandals and clubbing terrorists. There’s no respite in these two intense and solid tracks, both subtly composed in spite of the constant overgain and apparent mess, both spat out towards your ears throughout these ten minutes. Take an avalanche of drum parts, hints of power electronics, and pure data activism, and you’ll get an idea of the substance of this record. NYC experimentalists PAS (Post Abortion Stress) is a group out to create musical collages through the form of abstract sound. Their name refers metaphorically to those who have been aborted by society, because their point of view doesn’t fit in the constraints of “normal” society. The short name refers to the negative in French, metaphorically negating everything that is established to start from a new beginning. The band create soundscapes underpinned by the notion that music can be whatever the ear perceives… a conception fueled by the love of life and art. The compositions themselves are more akin to soundscapes than “songs” in the traditional sense. There are no clearly defined melodies, no structural landmarks that give you any sense of traditional anchor. Sonic sculptures in the mode of pure art. 6-panel digisleeve.

Íon is the brainchild of Duncan Patterson (Antimatter, Anathema) and is named after the Gaelic word for ‘pure’. Although primarily a solo project, a number of guest musicians are involved in this new venture by the Ireland-based musician, which hereby explores a more acoustic, dreamy and organic side to his composition. Having Irish mysticism and an exotic Mediterranean backdrop as its essential cornerstones, the project has slowly evolved into an international venture, stretching over continents and oceans. The music seems to elude strict categorisation, and even the apparently all-encompassing definition of World Music falls short in defining the ethereal moods that “Madre, Protégenos” comes to reveal. Presented in a sumptuous, black and gold foil-blocked, 6-panel digipak.

Over the years, Michael Gira (Angels Of Light, ex-SWANS etc) has honed his craft into something more sophisticated without actually having lost sight of the power, emotional tugs, or even the simplicity of his earlier works. Mostly built around his guitar and voice in a home studio environment, the songs here expose perfectly how he can function without the layers of sound he’s also often fond of exploring.
