female:pressure (founded in 1998) is an international network and database with 1300 female mu- sic creators, artists and academics in 56 countries. A study published by female:pressure earlier this year has been receiving a great deal of media attention. It reveals that, fifteen years after the establishment of the network, the representation of female acts at major international electronic music festivals is only 10%. These festivals are largely funded by public money. The situation in Berlin is unfortunately no exception.

When asked about the reasons for this significant imbalance, curators and bookers usually reply that there are not enough female artists. This argument does not do justice to our current social reality and simply ignores a significant share of creative potential. We find this situation unacceptable, but also consider it as an oppor- tunity for female:pressure to reinforce the visibility of women in electronic music and the digital arts by organizing a two-day festival that calls the real underlying causes and dynamics of the imbalance into question.

Artists, responsible local and international male and female festival curators and researchers in the field are invited to participate in the dialogue. Workshops, lectures and talks held during the day will serve as a platform for a lively exchange of experiences and knowledge.

In the panel discussions, curators’ decision-making processes should be reviewed in order to identify potential changes that will allow us to develop joint solutions for a gender-sensitive music industry. During the lectures and workshops, well-known and influential festival curators, organizers, boo- kers and musicians will have the opportunity to present best practice models and projects and define concrete possibilities.

The night events will provide a showcase to present the multifaceted performances of Berlin- ba- sed and international artists, as well as their perspectives on electronic music.
