|FORMICATION – ‘The Eyes Of Erodern Riviema’ CD (Small Doses) – £10.50 / £11.50 / £12.50|
Formication is Alec Bowman and Kingsley Ravenscroft, the miraculous electric musical ensemble from Nottingham. They create unique rhythmic, chaotic yet structured works, twisting a variety of sounds into creeped-out electronica, frozen ambience and sporadic wayward beats. Described by The Wire magazine as ‘sonic occultists’, they can be found “wandering a dream landscape somewhere between the ritual ambience of Coil and the electronic space drift of Tangerine Dream”. “The Eyes of Erodern Riviema” is a their most realised work to date and a masterpiece start to finish. |FRANCISCO LOPEZ & NOVI_SAD – ‘Titans’ CD (Gradual Hate Records) – £11 / £12 / £13|
Sound artists Francisco López (Spain) and Novi_sad (Greece) have together explored the blurred territory between reality and the creation of self-contained sound enviornments through a long process of transformation of sonic materials. Working with the same shared field recordings carried out in the region of Ancient Olympia in Greece (and presented in the context of a live performance during the International Olympia Festival on June 30th 2010), they have created two individual pieces with extreme dynamics, at times obscure and dense, but laden with hidden complexity and a few surprised for the most adventurous listeners. |GNOMONCLAST – ‘Gather Together’ CD (Old Europa Cafe) – £11 / £12 / £13|
This, the second album of a proposed trilogy, furthers the themes drawn from “Tempus Null” nearer to a conclusion. While remaining aggressively percussive, many orchestral movements and melodic constructions accompany the virulent proclamations of J1 StatiK (Luftwaffe) and N2 ItinitI (Valence). Also accompanying Gnomonclast for this release are: Art Abscons, Cult Of Youth, Awen, Stahlfaust, State Research Bureau, Giftstrauch and Front Sonore. This album exemplifies its title, for never before have so many diverse artists gathered together to tell a coherent, yet complex narrative concerning time’s certain movement toward an end. Prior to time’s censure, Gnomonclast offers “Gather Together,” an album that requires close scrutiny. Digipak with booklet.
|HOOR-PAAR-KRAAT – ‘The Eureka Tapes: The Complete Recordings’ 2 x CD (Small Doses / |
Basses Frequences) – £13.50 / £14.50 / £15.50
The pieces that make up “The Eureka Tapes” were all created while Hoor-paar-Kraat’s Anthony Mangicapra was living in the town of Eureka, California. Indeed, the town’s name is apt as they represent a “Eurekamoment” for Hoor-paar-Kraat as a musical entity; a figurative spilling of the bath waters as Hoor-paar-Kraat found their sound. The hints of alchemical transcendence that peeped through the cracks of previous releases come brazenly into view throughout. Music dissolves into explorations of texture, acoustic phenomena and the psyche. Originally issued as three separate volumes in a variety of hard to find formats, “The Eureka Tapes” collects the three original volumes, plus Hoor-paar-Kraat’s side of their split cassette with Last and a previously unreleased recording from the same sessions. Hoor-paar-Kraat’s music finds itself traveling the same surreal by-ways as Nurse With Wound, irr. app. (ext.), The Hafler Trio and Coil’s more ritualistic output.
|IRON FIST OF SUN – ‘Embers’ 7″ (Peripheral Records) – £7 / £8 / £9|
IFOTS continues the Lady Di obsession with a single that encapsulates the Power Electronics we know and love, except with added dark bleeping analogue ambience (‘Bedroom is Human’) and a synthline (‘Embers’) that comes straight from Throbbing Gristle’s darker synth explorations. Birmingham Nihilism! Ltd x 277 copies.

Welcome, to the early days of this cult formation! Maeror Tri (1998-1996) were a German trio that used only electric guitars and processing devices to create their floating and static droning soundscapes. On the basis of the European organ drones and the Indian Tanpura foundation, the gentle Japanese temple bell compliments the piece. It is neither of European Middle Age by a revisionist nor Oriental music composed from a European viewpoint. Its actions are of international minimalism and “Sorow: is ‘Universal Music’ in the true sense of the word. Ltd x 500 copies in a stunning digibook designed by Jonathan Coleclough. Japanese import.

|SKY BURIAL – ‘Threnody For Collapsing Suns’ CD (Small Doses / Phage Tapes)|
– £10.50 / £11.50 / £12.50
Sky Burial (aka Michael Page of Fire in the Head) has been exploring the dark ambient side of industrial music since 2006, evolving into a unique and steadfast in the genre. “Threnody For Collapsing Suns” is a triptych clocking in at over 50 minutes – thoughtfully composed; incorporating deep drones, shimmering synth work, and lamenting melodic lines. The disparate layers come together to form a surprisingly organic, well-crafted narrative. Threnody continues Sky Burial’s journey into the nebulous dusk of “Kosmische Musik”, and forms part of a loose trilogy with the preceding Kiehtan and forthcoming Aegri Somnia. Ltd x 500 copies.

|THE RITUAL INCLUSION OF CODE – ‘Beta Wave Nemesis’ CD (Small Doses)|
– £10.50 / £11.50 / £12.50
The Ritual Inclusion Of Code is a monumental collaboration between Daniel Jansson (Deadwood) and Osman Arabi (20.sv, Seeker). Beta Wave Nemisis is their premiere recording. Both artist’s influences and efforts are immediately apparent and blend effortlessly to create this single document of a long journey. Dark ambient textures blend with industrial soundscapes. Harsh noise floats with minimal drone and power electronics vocalisations. One movement flows well into the next, making for an intense and epic debut recording. The art and design was handled by Seldon Hunt.
|THE SONG SPARROWS – ‘Days That Are No More’ CD (Old Europa Cafe) – £11 / £12 / £13|
Founded in 2006 by Didì (voice, flute, sitar, lyrics) and Martino (guitar, bass ,percussions, harp, chorus), The Song Sparrows are the result of a great passion for late 60’s, early 70’s British Acid Folk. Love for animals, respect for Mother Nature and worshipping of the whole of creation in all its forms represent not only a musical inspiration emphasised in the evocative, fairy-tale lyrics plonged in a bucolic and pastoral atmosphere between imagination and reality, but a real, coherent lifestyle. The Animistic conception of the Universe is the inspiration for the debut album “Days That Are No More”.
|VULTURES Vs AMPERSAND – ‘Vultures Vs Ampersand’ CD (Born In Mind) – £11 / £12 / £13|
This album boasts dark ambient and industrial sounds that recall Italian Futurism in two 30-minute tracks that highlight the unusual instrumentation and varied musical backgrounds of the two projects. Ampersand, led by artist and musician Stephen Oldfield, builds and performs with giant metallic structures created in his Deptford home. Along with the sound sculptures, Ampersand uses missile shell casings, corrugated iron sheets, and a dismantled piano as well as radios, detuned electric bass, and enhanced electronics. Vultures Quartet for this recording features prepared zither, a Korg synthesizer, metal percussion, bowed cymbals, and house hold objects such as pot lids, a wok, table legs, and a CD rack. Many of the acoustic sounds made by the quartet were manipulated and reintroduced into the composition through the live computer processing of member Matt Chilton. Digipak.

|WILT & HORCHATA – ‘Geomancy’ CD (OHM Records) – £11 / £12 / £13|
Dark music pioneer Wilt bridges the gaps between industrial, drone, noise and experimental. Avant mystics of the modern day, Wilt continue to create endless landscapes of mystery and isolation juxtaposed against depression and decay. Horchata focus on four major elements: complex beat music, dark ambient soundscapes, programmed compositional glitch music and field recordings. Geomancy is a study of the interconnection between the human consciousness and the energy of the earth. Geomancy is focused on sacred geometry, the way that spirit integrates into matter – by echoing and amplifying the geometry of nature and planetary movements. The sonic resonance of body / mind / spirit with the harmonic frequencies of the cosmic above and the earthen below. Maximizing the possibility of connection to the One. |ZBIGNIEW KARKOWSKI & TETSUO FURUDATE – ‘World As Will IV’ CD (OHM Records)|
– £11 / £12 / £13
“IV” in the ‘World As Will’ series (“III” Sub Rosa, “II’ 23five, “I” Staalplaat). “‘World As Will’ is a work in which Zbigniew Karkowski and Tetsuo Furudate combine orchestral music with computer music – read: noise. At the basis here lie two performances, one for sax, trombone, flute and sine waves and the other for a small ensemble called Sonic Boom. These recordings are slaughtered by the composers during a concert in Tokyo and turned into a racket of noise. Another heavy weight release, with lots of cascading noise samples of orchestral origin spliced on the spot together, fed through the lions of granular synthesis – and who knows what else. Its however in the power of these hands that they know, somewhere in the middle how to pull back and go deeper and deeper into what seems to be the crackling of surfaces with contact microphones, before returning to the world of crashing noise and only to return once more to that somewhat dark underworld, going back up after for a cascading finale. Noise indeed and perhaps I should have left this in the capable hands of Jliat, but this is actually noise of the more intelligent kind” (Vital Weekly). Limited to just 200 copies in a digipak!
