ANCESTRAL HOUSE OF THE SUN – ‘Ancestral House Of The Sun’ LP (CTS Productions)
– £14 / £17.50 / £21
Ancestral House Of The Sun is the solo moniker of Greek artist Serafim Grigoriou. Though under the banner of acoustic / wyrd / progressive folk, Ancestral House Of The Sun has a certain epic, experimental quality to it that definitely makes it stand out. Unlike most folk music, Ancestral House Of The Sun doesn’t follow strict, pre-determined ‘pop’ structural patterns It’s an unusual, yet refreshing, pairing of folk and experimental acoustic. Ancestral House Of the Sun does a fine job of creating interesting atmospheric landscapes and intimate overtones to accent the guitar and enhance the mood of each song. Ancestral House Of The Sun deserves a quiet room and little distraction, for the details are what make this music come alive and keep your attention. For fans of Current 93, Six Organs Of Admittance, Nick Drake etc. Ltd x 492 copies in an embossed sleeve.

CUT HANDS – ‘Afro Noise I’ CD (Susan Lawly / Very Friendly) – £13.50 / £14.50 / £15.50
13 tracks of startling afro noise that will blow your fucking mind…an unholy genre unto itself. A bludgeoning mix of machine and vaudou / Central African percussion plus other acoustic instruments combine to create one of the most physically intense musical experiences ever. The songs featured in VBS’s films ‘Vice Guide To Liberia’ and ‘Mandingo’. Since 2007’s Whitehouse album Racket, and after his original ‘Afro Noise’ mix became one of the most downloaded experimental mixes ever made, William Bennett’s remarkable Cut Hands album has seen 4 long years of meticulously obsessive studio work in the making, notably deploying his special collection of Congolese and Ghanaian percussion instruments. Mastered by Denis Blackham. Comes with a 16-page booklet. Take our word for it, this is one of the best releases of 2011!

Amazing sounds between strength minimalist lines and noisy outbursts, highly concentrated stuff. Ltd x 500 copies.
ELYSIÜM & MONARCH! – ‘Elysiüm & Monarch!’ CD (Solitude Records / Throne Records /
Shifty Records / Amertume Corruption / Parade Records / 213 Records / Wee Wee / Fidelio /
Amanita / Murder Records) – £10.50 / £11.50 / £12.50
Talk about polar opposites, it’s like night and day on this one! This French pairing brings together the skull exploding grind antics of Elysiüm and the super slow motion doom of Monarch. Elysiüm splatters gray matter with four cuts in 10 minutes of noxious, hyper speed grind frenzy. Meanwhile Monarch eclipses the sun with a 58 minute dirge featuring some of the sickest female vocals ever committed to CD! Apocalyptic droning, dredging doom riffs and a fetid air of misery impact with all the subtlety of a rusted knife to the groin. If Burning is too fast for you, then Monarch! should fit just right! Second edition of 500 copies.

GNOD – ‘Chaudelande Volume 1’ LP (Tamed Records) – £13 / £16.50 / £20
Formed in 2006, Mancunians GNOD started their last European tour by spending a couple of days in the Studio Chaudelande, a small house made of bricks and passion, somewhere in the Normandy countryside in France. They recorded new songs that are now released as a two volume LP series on Tamed Records. “Chaudelande Volume I” contains three songs which demonstrated the multi-faceted universe of GNOD. From the heaviest space-rock parts they’ve ever recorded to meditative Neofolk mantra influenced moments of calmness and introspection, this new recording marks a new step in GNOD’s cosmic procession. Double bass guitar, percussive heavy drums, that meet the sound of bells. Some quiet parts were recorded outdoors between birds and trees, that give a timeless mood to the record. The result shines like a versatile light, eyes burned by the moonlight and the twilight. Ltd x 500 copies on white vinyl.

WARDRUNA – ‘Runaljod – Gap Var Ginnunga – Black’ 2 x LP (Burning World Records /
Alone Records) – £18 / £23 / £28
Wardruna is a Norwegian Pagan Folk group founded by Kvitrafn (Gorgoroth, Jotunspor) in 2003. Their debut album ‘Runaljod – Gap Var Ginnunga’ is the first part of a planned ‘Runaljod’ trilogy which will musically interpret the runes of the Elder Futhark. Wardruna search in the scattered ruins of Norse history and use the runes as a tool to understand and evoke the depths of the old nordic pagan beliefs. Musically, the main focus is on recreating the Norse cultic musical language and the near forgotten arts of galder and seidr, as well as the daily acts of life. This is mixed with impulses from Norwegian/Nordic folk music and music from other indigenous cultures. Many of the recordings took place outdoors at locations relevant to the different runes, primarily using old, historical instruments such as self-made frame drums and ceremonial drums, mouth harp, tagelharpe (‘viking fiddle’), flutes, goat horns, tongue horns and Hardanger fiddle. Also more unconventional inputs like trees, stones, bones, water, fire. Ltd x 400 copies on black 180g vinyl in a luxurious trifold sleeve with 24 page booklet. VERY FEW IN STOCK – ACT FAST!

GULAGGH – ‘Vorkuta’ CD (New Era Productions) – £10.50 / £11.50 / £12.50

From the ashes of Stalaggh begins the Gulaggh trilogy. A soulripping piece of audio terror. The most disturbing piece so far by these musical avant-garders. This time they used mostly classical instruments (violins, trumpets, saxophones etc). For vocals they used more mental patients than ever before, including over 30 screaming children from a Youth Mental Hospital! Ltd x 300 copies with handmade silkscreen print covers.

MACHINE DE GUERRE – ‘Vanites’ CD (OPN) – £11 / £12 / £13

A dark disc from the catacombs of Paris and the debut album from Machine De Guerre (War Machine). Reminds of Haus Arafna, Le Syndicat Electronique or Millimetric. For followers of Industrial, Minimal Electro and Coldwave. Presented in a very nice 6-panel black and white digipak.

STALAGGH – ‘Project Misanthropia’ CD (Autopsy Kitchen Records)
– £10.50 / £11.50 / £12.50

Amid the agonising wails and livid atmosphere that exist as the core of Stalaggh’s sound; Stalaggh’s final black ambient masterwerk “Projekt Misanthropia” can certainly be called a progression from the earlier and already realised Stalaggh material….for the nonbelievers it will all start to make sense about 5 minutes into this hopelessly pessimistic journey. Stalaggh finally begin to utilise traditional instruments into their “recipe” and one can decipher from such inflection points less than harmonious guitar that certainly does nothing to bowdlerise the formula Stalaggh have commanded forth. The newly discovered overtones make even larger the undertones of previous Stalaggh statements. This is a fitting funeral for life itself. Gone completely wrong yet having never promised any certain outcome. Just like life. Ltd x 1000 hand-numbered copies.

STALAGGH – ‘Pure Misanthropia’ CD (New Era Productions)
– £10.50 / £11.50 / £12.50

This CD contains the original recording of Projekt Misanthropia, completely different and over 10 minutes longer. This is exactly how it sounded while Stalaggh performed their Audio-Terrror… Of this recording only a tape survived, which was digitally mastered for this limited release. This is for those who could bear the official release of Projekt Misanthropia. You will endure a far more extreme and raw version on this CD. This is Stalaggh in it’s purest form. Ltd x 300 hand-numbered copies.

THE BEING – ‘Through Madness To Mercury’ CD (The Mercurius Collective /
New Era Productions
) – £11 / £12 / £13

The Being’s debut album deals with the concept of inner-transformation and personal growth on a spiritual level by combining the arts of philosophy and poetry, music and magic into one coherent whole. A musical style perhaps best described as neofolk / neocabaret – though not strictly bound to a genre as such – takes the listener on a journey through a the realms of self-transformation with a strange, unworldly and experimental mixture of moodswings that intentionally shock the mind and purposefully disturb the mental balance. Gatefold digifile with 20-page booklet.

THE FAMILY ELAN – ‘Bow Low Bright Glow’ CD (Altvinyl) – £11 / £12 / £13

‘Bow Low Bright Glow’ is a communal excavation and re-presentation of buried European folk and sufi-hearted music than any form of experiment. Family Elan are alone in their field. Here, Chris Hladowski has put together a collection of original numbers, visions created from lost / found tapes and traditional pieces that are a fitting companion to Family Elan’s ‘Stare of Dawn’ debut. Alongside Hladowski’s voice, there’s the vocal input of Nalle’s Hanna Tuulikki… a voice as easily capable of gentle Qawwali as it is folk song. This is a record of heavy treble intricacy, Hladowski’s saz and bouzouki playing encompassing drones, folk, dervish progressive work and a woozy shimmer over and through the entwining melodies. Family Elan are more than just a project or a band, Hladowski has endowed the music here with a such a unique voice that shaky shorthand comparisons would be pointless and a short sell. Music that hints at the devotional rarely feels as inclusive, as communal and as enjoyable as this. Gatefold digisleeve.
