Hailing from the north-east of the USA, here comes another fine solo effort which lately gained some attention through the signing with the German NoiTekk label. Their debut full length “Drawn + Quartered” is out now and Life Cried proves well that they don’t have to hide their talent behind the big and well known names in the NoiTekk label roster like Tactical Sekt, Grendel or Psyclon Nine. Of course they fit well into the music program of this label, playing the straight and harsh EBM/Electro/Industrial madness, which still gets some fine recognition. So here are the facts behind this mysterious project…
Chain D.L.K.: Chris, with “Drawn + Quartered” you have released your first official debut CD on the German NoiTekk label. Please give us at first a brief introduction of Life Cried with a short biography.
Life Cried: I’ve starting producing the first Life Cried material back in 1999, I made a 3 song demo and booked a bunch of live shows to get things started, after getting a good response from DJ’s and live performances I quit other bands I was working with and made Life Cried my main project, over the years I ended up producing more tracks and eventually started remixing other artist’s, I gave Marco from NoiTekk a demo at a show and than we agreed to release the “Drawn + Quartered” album on the label.
Chain D.L.K.: What is the meaning of your pseudonym “Death Condition”?
Life Cried: “Death Condition” was originally the title of an old Life Cried track, I ended up using it as the name that I produce music under, and it eventually became an alias.
Chain D.L.K.: You have found your label home with the German NoiTekk. How did this happen? Why a German label instead to take a look at your home area in the USA?
Life Cried: There are really no American label’s that specialize in harsh Industrial, I really like what NoiTekk is doing and we seem to fit in with them just fine.
Chain D.L.K.: How do you globally review this “Hellektro/Terror-EBM” thing? People often try to sort in acts without any deeper sense, so maybe also Life Cried falls into this…?
Life Cried: I think “Hellektro” is a pretty stupid name actually, I have always wrote the same style of music even before these genera names were around, but that seems to be the category we are thrown in just because we have “distorted vocals”.
Chain D.L.K.: How could you get Dave of Hive Records to do the artwork for your CD “Drawn + Quartered”? Do the written manuscripts have a deeper meaning? Please explain us the meaning of the bone saw and the artworkrelated generally to your music…
Life Cried: Dave is actually a good friend of mine and I really liked the work he had done for bands in the past, so when the time came I asked him to do it, he actually came up with the art design on his own, I think he did anamazing job and I plan on working with him in the future.
Chain D.L.K.: Like the music, so are the lyrics. At times hard to follow thanks to the used effects on your voice, would you say that they are generally influenced by some horror/splatter themes? Do you use your lyricsalso to express more complex themes like politics, religion?
Life Cried: Most of the lyrics vary from song to song, I don’t use many “political” themes but I usually have a complex meaning behind each track, there is no set theme that I go for, the music of the song usually makes thedifference on what I feel like saying at the time.
Chain D.L.K.: What else would you consider to be a driving force behind the music and the lyrical content behind Life Cried?
Life Cried: Basically aggression, anything I can use to create a dark atmosphere will influence me.
Chain D.L.K.: Now with the help of a German label, how does it look with some live performances in North America as well as in Europe? How does a Life Cried gig look for all those who haven’t seen you on stage? I think you had also a gig at the German WGT 2006. How did it go for you?
Life Cried: Now that the album is out we have been playing more shows, we will be playing all over America late summer and plan to book a full tour after the new year, we didn’t play WGT this year but we look forward to nextyear, I can promise a brutal an energetic show for anyone looking forward to seeing us.
Chain D.L.K.: Maybe a bit early to ask for, but do you have already some plans for upcoming releases? Any new stuff in the pipeline, any other works like remixes which you can announce here?
Life Cried: I already started work on the new album and have a lot of it done actually, live we play some of the new songs and they are going over really well, one new track will be on the upcoming NoiTekk “United Vol. 2” compilation planned for after summer, aside from that I have done a remix for our label-mates Grendel, which will appear on the “Soilbleed: Redux” EP.
Chain D.L.K.: What does your private life holding up for you besides music? Any further hobbies, interests, relations?
Life Cried: Besides writing music and screaming I watch a lot of movies, lol.
Chain D.L.K.: Any final words you would like to tell us here?
Life Cried: Buy the album and come to our shows!
