Chain D.L.K.: How did you come up with the name?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: There are many answers to this. We were doing music together and we’re like, “What the hell are we going to name this band? We sing in German. We’re a guy and a girl. We’re like two lost children in the woods, like Hanzel and Gretyl”. Actually, Loopy’s mom put it together and everyone thought it was the dumbest name, and we said, “That’s it. This is what we will call the band”.
Chain D.L.K.: How does it feel to play in Chicago?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: Don’t know yet. We will find out in a couple of minutes.
Chain D.L.K.: Where do the ideas for your lyrics come from?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: It’s magic. It just comes from the other dimensions. I can’t explain it. A lot of it is born out of conflict and arguments, believe it or not. It comes from friction, but the good kind.
Chain D.L.K.: How do you feel about the Electro scene having the effect of most guitars becoming obsolete and more computer driven?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: I like guitars. I don’t dislike Synthpop. I like Kraftwerk and bands like that. As long as it’s Synthpop with guitars. We also go against what the majority wants. We do whatever we feel.
Chain D.L.K.: What is the uniqueness of your band?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: We have a sense of comedy. We don’t take ourselves seriously.
Chain D.L.K.: Where did you learn your German?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: I used to live in Germany. I was very influenced by the German thang!
Chain D.L.K.: What are your musical influences?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: I like Kraftwerk and old Electro and some other stuff. Vas likes extreme music like noise and thrash. I grew up on The Exploited and old British punk.
Chain D.L.K.: What is the symbolism behind the red, black, and white imagery?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: We like it. We take our concepts to our designer, and he applies them. We use all red, white, and black propaganda on stage. We love it, and it’s very simple and to the point.
Chain D.L.K.: Any video media coming out?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: Maybe next time around a documentry of how we survive on the road.
Chain D.L.K.: Where do you see your music progressing for the next album?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: I don’t know. Only time will tell. Our next CD could be serious – watch out!
Chain D.L.K.: What are some survival tips for bands that are just starting out?
Hanzel Und Gretyl: It is obviously your destiny on how you make it. Stick with the other person that drives you completely out of your mind, through everything (that would be each other in this case), and something will come of it.
