Rector Scanner is a relatively new EBM/electro one-man band from the Berlin area that draws inspiration from Kraftwerk, Ligths of Euphoria, Depoche Mode, Klirrfaktor, Armageddon Dildos etc. Altough Agro hasn't been making music foor very long, he quickly scored a deal and got involved in loads of remix works for a number of different bands including Armageddon Dildos, Mastertune, Final Selection, Massiv in Mensch, Legacy of Music, R-O-B-A-T-O and others (quite an inspirational role model to new comers, I would hope). "Vocoder" is not a collection of all these remixes (like you might expect), but rather Agro's very own interpretation of all the influences that have made up his listening experiences and his friendships. Germaniac EBM textures are mixed in with dance-friendly anthems, funky atmospheric productions ("Spielzeug" for example is retro-fashioned but not too derivative, which makes it interesting) and sparkling and popping electro-werkian connotations sprinkled all around the record. You may think of it as sci-fi retro-pop electro body music, or something along those lines... The title "Vocoder" seems to have been chosen wisely, if you know what I am saying... Lyrics are in german and the booklet has a very nice art work.

Title: Modern Wild Dub
Format: CD
Label: Select Cuts (@)

After the critically acclaimed "Wild Dub (Dread meets Punk Rocker)", Select Cuts is back with a new proposal for what obviously was conceived as or later became, a series. The follow up "Modern Wild Dub (Dread meets disco punkrocker downtown)" collects a bunch of underground avantgarde-disco-dubbers from fine outlets such as Warp, On-U Sound, DFA, !K7 including Colder, Playgroup, Big Two Hundred, !!!, Chicks on Speed, LCD Soundsystem, Twitch, Radio 4, Outhud, The Ruts, Chicken Lips, G.Rizo, whose styles range from funky disco to dub and trip hop... Altough it is a decent record and a valuable collection that takes a snapshot of a specific music scene often overlooked, I am afraid I must admit that I don't think this is up for the challenge when compared to its predecessor and perhaps has a lesser historical value, and I don't really see anything punk or punkrock in this... Linernotes by Mark Stewart of Popgroup.

I'm ignorant about contemporary music but the approach to this composer wasn't that difficult. His music isn't based on theory only (as far as I can understand) but could be listened without any musical conception also. The eight movements are commissioned recordings that goes from 1989 to 2003. Each one has got particular sounds and structure and during the listening I was amazed. This is the real experimental music that gives to the listener emotions and each track is a surprise with moments of musical anarchy along with particular structures. The instruments used for these tracks are: blockflutes, tapes, flute piccolo, bassethorn, trumpet, harpsichord and bassclarinet.Just to know the man a little more here's his bio taken from his website:"Roderik de Man (Bandung/Indonesië 1941) studied percussion with Frans van der Kraan and theory of music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. At the same time he participated in composition classes with Kees van Baaren and worked in the electronic studio as a student of Dick Raaymakers. Since 1972 he teaches theoretica subjects and composition to young composers at the same institute.Between 1993 and 1997 he was on the board of the Dutch Composer's Society (GeNeCo) and since 1997 he is a board member of the Artistic Committee of Donemus/MuziekGroep Nederland, the publishing house of Dutch contemporary music. Since 1998 he is also on the boards of CEM (centre for Electronic Music). Recently he was asked to be counselor to the board of the Stichting Ton Bruynèl, foundation for the promotion of electronic music.Roderik de Man received many commissions from a.o. the Foundation for the Creation of Music, the Amsterdam Art Fund and the Johan Wagenaar Foundation. He composes purely instrumental as well as instrumental/electronic music. His oeuvre consists of solo pieces, chambermusic and works for choir, large ensembles and orchestra.Several times compositions were selected by the international jury of the ISCM (the International Society for contemporary Music) to be performed during the World Music Days (Oslo 1991, Mexico 1993, Seoul 1997, Boucarest 1998). In 1991 "Chordis Canam" for harpsichord and tape won the 2nd prize in the competition of the Festival de Musique Electroacoustique in Bourges, where he was among the finalists in 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2001. In 1999 "Air to Air" for flute, basset horn and trumpet received the 2nd prize in the same festival and also the 2nd prize in the Concorso Internazionale di Composizione "Città die Torino 2000".Roderik de Man's music was performed and broadcast in most European countries as well as in the United States, Brasil, Mexico, Indonesia and Japan".

Does the dance floor EVER get more Gothic than MEPHISTO WALZ? I dare say, "No, it does not". Only 2 tracks, and yet, this EP is indispensable for any trellis-climbing dance music enthusiast. Every Gothic dance dj will consider these tracks as playlist magnets! Title track, "Nightingale" will draw your feet away from tempting smiles and onto the dance floor recently vacated by fans of Lords of Acid, and Marilyn Manson. Swirly skirts and transparent lace cuffs will befriend the swelling romance of Mephisto Walz. Soon, the percussive beats will draw more damned souls out to join you. "Witches Gold" opens (welcomingly) in retro, like any familiar songs by The Smiths. As this song progresses, vocals linger in a style reminiscent to me of Rozz Williams from the better days of Christian Death. Definitely rooted in the finer charms of old school Gothic dance elements, NIGHTINGALE delivers every bit the fullness of satisfaction.
