Artist: DRONAEMENT (@)
Title: yr
Format: CD
Label: AFE Records/Blade Records (@)
Immediately acclaimed as one of AFE's best releases, and one of last year's most remarkable drone works, Dronaement's "yr" is a joy to the ear and to the eye. Coming folded in a chinese paper sheet with handmade drawing, plus a "regular" cardboard cover with suggestive artwork, and including a multimedia part with info, pictures and a video, it really pushes the cdr format to a professional level far more exciting than most "regular" releases. And the sonic part is just excellent. Droning ambient relying on delayed string instruments, synths and organs, plus field recordings (a beach, the rain...) and a cello (played by Markus Altmann) in "Ea nostalgia". Nothing that hasn't been played a hundred times over the years, but Markus Obst has managed to create a miracle of magic, nostalgia and restlessness which I could only compare to Eno's "On land" masterpiece. Dreamy but also turbulent and ever-shifting, these six tracks really deserve continued, and deep, listenings. Dronaement has also realesed an lp and a 7" record on Drone Records, and a new cd will be released soon by AFE - rejoice.

Artist: FALAFEL AVANTGARDE
Title: He-Pea
Format: 7"
Label: Public Eyesore (@)
A rare example of 7" vinyl from Public Eyesore. Falafel Avantgarde are a huge collective band (Oren Adar-Burla, Joseph Copolovich, Shlomi Fridge, Omri Hanegbi, Barak Shalit, Uri Tchelet, Jango, Dan Toren, Orna Zusman) from Israel; it's not specified who plays what, but there are for sure synths and keyboards, guitars, an upright-bass and drums. Now, "mousse tan (electric jahnoon)" offers a vocal loop (a female voice saying something in French) plus some key/synth pattern. Doesn't go anywhere, really. On the flipside, "landerian (eric the half bee)" is a kind of jazzy-fusion-synth mishmash. Hmmmm, no thanks. Not really avantgarde to my ears, and definitely not topping the delicious sensations that a good falafel can give.

Artist: MONOTRACT (@)
Title: Pagu
Format: 12"
Label: Public Eyesore (@)
Curiously released in 12" vinyl instead of the usual Public Eyesore cdr, Monotract's "Pagu" is a demented mix of noise, beats, deconstructionism and dada spirit. Not easy-listening but not exactly harsh, halfway between aggressive frequencies and just "been-wanking-with-electronics"-style. Sometimes it's like crossing Nurse With Wound's "A sucked orange" with beats. I dunno, I don't really like this style of noise. It's surely diverse but it doesn't grab my attention - too loose, and it dosn't etch my skin in the end.

Artist: RAFFAELE SERRA
Title: Europe Endless
Format: CD
Label: AFE Records (@)
The sense and atmosphere of this cd are perfectly embedded in its dedication to Rainer Werner Fassbinder. This is, like, the electronic soundtrack that Fassbinder didn't live enough to choose. Synthesizing 30 + years of electronic music (ambient drones, Kraftwerk and kraut-electronica, soundtracks, intelligent techno and Warp-style beats), sound-magician Raffaele Serra unfolds his own tribute to Europe, photographed in 12 tracks dedicated to its cities: Berlin, Zürich, Amsterdam, Paris, Wien, London... Blurred polaroids of flashing lights, rain and night movements. Shifting from obsessive techno beats ("Children of kaos"), to minimalist drones ("Abduction"), to jazzy dilutions ("Genetic light"), Serra's synthetic soundscapes bear, like his celebrated cities, both the restlessness of a nomadic spirit and the existential weight of several hundred years of history.

Title: Daruma
Format: 2 x CD (double CD)
Label: Ant Zen (@)
Distributor: Audioglobe
Nicely packaged and stuffed of sounds, DARUMA represents the 150th Ant Zen's release. I haven't checked but since it contains thirty two tracks played by thirty two different bands on a twoCD set which on the fist pressing comes along with two posters, stickers, cards, etc. It seemsto me that almost each band who released an album is here greeting the label for its tenth yearbirthday, but I can't tell for sure. Anyway... The fist CD seems to be more concentrated on noise and rhythm bringing us new or remixed tracks by Orphx, Roger Rotor, Iszoloscope, Synapscape,Asche, Axiome, Cell Auto Mata,Contagious Orgasm, This Morn' Omina, P·a·l, Morgenstern, Individual, Mental Destruction, Converter, Monokrom,Hypnoskull, and Ars Moriendi. The second one has got Noosa Hedz, M2, Veruschka, L'Ombre, Ah Cama-Sotz, Ambre, Ultra Milkmaids, Rob(u)nent, Black Lung, Telerotor, Vromb, Imminent, Silk Saw, Templegarden's and Klangstabil. If you already know Ant Zen, you know what is expecting you: tons of rhythmical, noisy and ambient experimentationwhich made of the label a reference point for the genre. Now, since we kinda cleared what this compilation represents, let's try to understand behind the DARUMA concept which ispart of the Japanese culture. By visiting www.darumaonline.com first of all we're impressed by the different kind of darumasand by the expression of the faces painted on those objects (I don't know if they are made out of clay or what else) butthe concept of daruma could be more interesting. On the website you can read: " Everybody Knows DARUMA, If they are Japanese . DARUMA is so popular and connected withJapanese tradition and culture. Many people in Japan buy DARUMA for elections, success of business, weddings, and other happy events more....[ DARUMA BRINGS HAPPINESS TO EVERYBODY ! ]DARUMA was a person who lived a long time ago.DARUMA was a prince in India.DARUMA went to China with the idea of Buddhism.DARUMA started Chinese Zen.DARUMA was 28 generations from BUDDHA.There is a very famous story about DARUMA.DARUMA sat facing a wall for 8 years meditatingand..[became a saint] .... "A DARUMA is presented as a sort of stone with elliptical shape which never falls. When you received a DARUMA you've got to: first, please draw the right eye when you see in front of daruma in black, if your eye's color is blue, you should use blue it, doesn't matter. (*^_^*)Then, you make a wish, anything's OK ,wish to make a boy or girl friend, succeed in your business, win in the big election, win the game, pass the examination,[WISHES OF HUMAN BEING NEVER STOP], usually........ (*^_^*)Anyway, when your wish comes true, please draw in the other eye.It will become a complete DARUMA, in front of you".
