Artist: THE MISSING ENSEMBLE
Title: Zeropolis
Format: CD
Label: Low Impedance
Rated: *****
Second full-length release for this French/Canadian trio formed by Daniel De Los Santos (Tamarin), John Sellekaers (Xingu Hill, Dead Hollywood Stars) and Mathias Delplanque (Lena, Bidlo) after their debut "Hidden Doors" (Mondes Elliptiques) which I haven't listened to yet. [Meanwhile, on a side note, Delplanque has recently released a new solo work on Mondes Elliptiques, and another one is forthcoming on Low Impedance itself]. Accompanied by an apparently neutral set of photos, "Zeropolis" is a brooding and desolate affair, that kind of obscure minimalism-cum-post industrial that was once called "isolationism". "Old York" opens the record with low-end rumbles and chirping noises - reminding of Francisco López or mnortham at his darkest - and the rest of the tracks doesn't alter this mood, creating more disquieting soundscapes with the use of metallic drones ("La suspension éthéréenne"), melting and absorbing some barely recognizable instrumental input (Lenny Gonzales' guitar, or Ernst Karel's trumpet on the especially memorable "Attaining Pt. 1"). The end result is a somber, carefully assembled work, in which the trio has collaborated successfully both in terms of sharing their individual inspiration, and of structuring some potentially dispersive material.
