Probably many of you lately noticed Extreme is back for good with its usual high standard products and is following its heterogeneous release schedule. Right after Claudio Parodi's homage to Alvin Lucier it's Terminal Sound System's turn and this time you can easily file this cd under "electronic music". I'm not that surprised it came out on this brilliant label fro the land of kangaroos, at last I think somehow there's a "trait d'union" behind a half of their catalogue and it goes beyond the simple "good taste"; just to paint a realistic portrait of this cd, let’s say it could have been also out on labels such as Planet Mu, Hefty, Skam or Warp and nobody would be surprised. Top notch electronic music with the usual maniacal attention for single sounds/beats, and for rhythmical structures but...surprise surprise...while this' music is without any doubt "cold", there's an intense and above all "warm", dark feeling that's probably that "common denominator" that lays behind many cds out on Extreme. I think "compression" should have been a better title to describe the sound profile of Terminal Sound Company, infact it all is boombastic and solid has a work like this requires. To clear up your mind I'd say musicwise this guy fuses together Autechre, Afx, LFO, Mick Harris, and at the same time reactualizes elements coming from "trance", "drum and bass" (Metalheadz?) and why not: jungle. I know many people after having read "jungle" and "drum and bass" may think this' old fashioned music, but that could be a big mistake since Klein (aka Halo, Circle of Lebanon, A Beautiful Machine) is quite personal. Rhythmically most of the tracks are really fragmented but some episodes have a natural propension for mid-fast tempos, on the other side when Terminal Sound System goes for the atmosphere you can bet the beat is never intrusive enough to destroy the tension built thru drones. I think "Compressor" is quite different from Venetian Snares, but I think if you're one of those who worship Venetian Snares, Afx and to the many development to which Stockhausen’s generative ideas had been subject along the way, well I think you should give it try for the simple fact he took back vigor in a world overcrowded with glitchy/poppy replicants. Groovy, cold, intense music, but another good adjective for "Compressor" should be: calibrated.
