A MYSTERIOUS DESIGN/LP/SS #1
Style Sindrome began to play in Rome in 1980, inspired by the new wave and post-punk music scene pioneered in the United Kingdom by such giants as Joy Division, The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Anna and Stefano came from TM Spa, a rock band that had been among the winner of the First Italian Rock Festival in 1980, whereas Giorgio had been part of Electroshock, a well known Italian rock band in the late ’70s. When Massimo and Raimondo joined in, the band emerged with the final line-up. The music of Style Syndrome is characterized by an unconventional and well-balanced mixture of dark sensibility and psychedelia, as well as an evocative alchemy of sounds which creates a rarefied atmosphere. The band self-produced a couple of demo tapes in the years ’81 and 82. In 1982 RAI produced a videoclip featuring Style Sindrome for the show “Mister Fantasy”.Later on in the same year, Style Sindrome participated with the track “Waving in the dark” to the compilation “Gathered”, edited by Rockerilla and released by Electric Eye Record. The album “Gathered”, re-issued on CD by Spittle Records in 2007, was listed in 2012 by the Italian Rolling Stone Magazine, among the 100 most beautiful Italian records ever. “A mysterious design” collects 7 original tracks from the band’s two self-produced demo tapes recorded in Rome in the years ’81 and ’82, which had largely remained unreleased and gone lost over the years. This invaluable release offers to fans a most rare pearl in the treasure chest of independent Italian music of the early 80s.
NUVO WEST/LP/SS #2
Hailing from the ashes of Phoenix legends of THE RED SQUARES, after their disbanding in the winter of 1983, Sonic Mike Stephens (lead vocals and guitar) and the other guitarist and keyboard player Roger Lee Chavous decided to start another band. They met bass player Walter Charchuck, and than started kicking around a crazy idea of combing Country with Synth/Punk material using a shitty drum machine. Greg David, the drummer, combined both drum machine and electronic drums. The plan was to dress like a new age cowboys, as all of them were from Arizona. Unlike some of the local Rock groups, NUVO WEST took a decidedly different approach to their style of playing. Art galleries like the Awun House, hosted [close] basement parties with the band that people were taking notice of. Opening for everyone from the Del Fuegos to buddies Rank N File, Nuvo worked their tails off. Enter buddy/studio wiz, Fred North. Using Sonic Mike’s practice studio, Fred set up his TASCAM 4 track and recorded the now sought after “Scary” EP. Included on the record were original songs written by Fred with a very heavy western influence, aka “Apache” and originals written by Sonic and Wally. Debuting the EP at a trendy “Alternative” club in Scottsdale, the band combined fence post props with several TVs playing homemade videos, including violent car crashes and porn. The audience loved it. The EP sold well locally, and the boys went out to tour in a limited fashion. In 1984, the band recorded their biggest album to date, “Twankin”, a word the band loved. Gone “were the keys/synth, and the look turned to jeans, large cowboy hats and nudie shirts. Released on cassette, “Twankin” out sold the previous EP twice over.
EUROPEAN IDOL/LP/SS #3
Prostitutes were a cult band from Turin (the italian motor city) that released only few tracks on vinyl and some demo tapes. The sound of the band was inspired by Velvet Underground, 70’s decadent rock and UK new wave. The band was leaded by Augusto and Bruno Panebarco, now a writer/poetry… deeply into drug abuse. People in “middle” who lived the laceration and existential generational clash of the 80’s. So, this is their definitive anthology that contains their best tracks recorded between 1982-84, studio and live stuff. A wonderful picture of the ‘dark’ side of the golden era of the italian style!
