Hello,

This week sees the long awaited return of Deaf Center with their 2nd album in six years – ‘Owl Splinters’. Recorded at Nils Frahms’ Durton studio, Erik Skodvin and Otto Totland’s transmission from the heart of Norwegian darkness is as evocative as ‘Pale Ravine’ but if anything, the upgraded recording facilities yield something even more supernatural and cinematic, solemnly articulating their narrative with a higher-fidelity creepiness. Play this music to pretty much anyone and they’ll surrender to it – grab it now on strictly limited vinyl including a bonus 45 minute CD of Svarte Greiner reinterpretations.

Riding a wave of adulation from taste-making blogs like XXJFG and Altered Zones, The Endless House Foundation unleash their beautifully realised sonic fiction with a CD+postcard+photo debut package. Smirking behind adopted pseudonyms like Jiri Kantor, Felix Uran and Rasmus Folk they make futurist electro pop, cosmic disco and cyber-baroque ‘tronica with a wryly knowing twist that should appeal in equal measure to lovers of Mordant Music and vintage Eastern European synth music.

Tri Angle records continue to rule our world with their release schedule (and L’Oreal’s by the sounds of it), which arrives at a European edition of How To Dress Well’s acclaimed debut album this week. It topped a ton of lists last year, and comes highly recommended to fans of everything from Arthur Russell to Salem to Autre ne Veut!

Blackest Rainbow continue their run of sumptuous gatefold LP pressings with a double album of experimental psychedelic folk drones by France’s Natural Snow Buildings. Their ten year run of small CDr editions and tapes have graced the likes of the Digitalis and Students Of Decay labels but ‘Waves Of The Random Sea’ is their most substantial, and first appearance on vinyl to boot! For string heavy drone and medieval folk somewhere between Fonal Records and Barn Owl & Infinite Strings Ensemble, look no further.

Planet Mu are a force to be reckoned with in the electronic underground. ’14 Tracks’ offers a succinct, bargain-priced taste of their recent, and future, oeuvre, covering the last few years of killers from Floating Points, Kuedo, Rossi B & Luca, Swindle, Ikonika and Falty DL, next to a shoal of new skool sounds from Solar Bears and The Internal Tulips, plus a new and exclusive Boxcutter track.

On the singles front, Martyn & Mike Slott consolidate their respective disciplines with a dance-primed 2-track collaboration for All City’s new series. Martyn’s sound dominates the A-side on a swagger house ting, while Slott’s influence is more apparent on the flip; a jazz-spliced, mid-tempo future HipHop groove with hints of Flying Lotus. A bit rougher and abstract, the Durian Brothers’ 2nd 12″ for Diskant lands somewhere between the orbits of Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit’s secret rhythms, Mark Ernestus’ Afro-dubs and the roughshod Harmonious Thelonious sound. If you don’t know what that means, it’s basically rough, psyched-out and hypnotic drum music for the club! Limited to 300 copies only…

Morgan Zarate makes a brilliant entry to the Hyperdub fold with the ‘Hookid’ EP this week. We’ve described it like “Joseph Hammer twysting Terror Danjah” or “Spacek meets Bernard Parmegiani…”, essentially a dose of dynamic R&B/HipHop futurism ranking among the most forward thing we’ve heard in ages. Also worth shouting about is Luke Abbott’s ‘Trans Forest Alignment’ featuring a stunning remix by Rocketnumbernine and Gavin Russom’s exotic jackers mix. Abbott’s original is taken from his excellent ‘Holkham Drones’ LP, but the main attraction for us is the Rocketnumbernine remix, jacking up the tempo and adding acres of luscious harmonic dissonance.

Also out this week, new releases from Seefeel, Aramac, Sepalcure, Kompakt’s Pop Ambient series, Deerhoof, Rockwell, NSI, Glasser, Moodymann, Excepter, Arthur’s Landing, XXXY, and an absolute ruck of essential catalogue additions from Klaus Schulze and Arvo Part.

Have yourselves a wonderful week…

Peace! nekkers….xx

THE ENDLESS HOUSE FOUNDATION
Endless House
ELECTRONIC
Dramatic Records
CD // £12.99

**CD package including eight postcards and photographs in velcro-sealed envelope** Having already had features in some of the most notable taste-making blogs out there (20Jazzfunkgreats, Altered Zones, Visitation-rites), Dramatic Records at long last unleash this excellent concept-compilation onto the world and alongside it introduce us to a whole ruck of hitherto unknown producers operating on the fringes of what’s good and right, taking in elements of post-wave, synthpop, chopped and screwed post-R&B and some good old fashioned IDM variations. The Endless House Foundation is also notable for its perfectly manipulated myth-making, adding a layer of sonic fiction to proceedings that we just adore, investigating “The outlandish brainchild of wealthy audiophile/maniac Jiri Kantor”, his stated mission was for the Endless House Foundation “to become the cradle of a new European sonic community… a multimedia discotheque” that should “surprise and delight” artists and dancers alike”. Unfortunately Jiri’s vision was ill-fated and his cyber-baroque pleasure dome was destined to become an unmanageable folly. This comp forms some of the scarce remaining evidence of the Endless House project’s existence, featuring twelve tracks from the likes of cybernetic showman Felix Uran and his definitive ‘Baltic Expo’, or Jiri Kantor with proto-techno anthem ‘Warum ist alles so schnell passiert’ and the debonaire cosmic funk finesse of Vienna’s Rasmus Folk. With this comp, Dramatic Records have created a powerfully vivid unterwelt of alternate reality that’s rightly bowled us over, taking the star-gazing spirit of that brilliant ‘Tangerine Traum’ comp to somewhere more rarified, and as trippily cryptic as Mordant Music’s eccentric fantasies. Don’t miss out on this!

DEAF CENTER
Owl Splinters (Limited Vinyl Edition)
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
Type
LP+CD // £12.99

*Limited vinyl edition – comes with a 45 minute CD of interpretations from one half of Deaf Center – Svarte Greiner* In 2005 Deaf Center left an indelible impression on the cinematic / modern-classical / dark ambient scenes with the release of their classic first LP – ‘Pale Ravine’. Since then Erik Skodvin and Otto Totland have quietly honed their art via the nightmarish catharsis of the Svarte Greiner and Nest projects respectively, arriving at their 2nd album together in deeply solemn and contemplative mood. For the next chapter of their story the mysterious imagery is rendered even sharper, as though someone on the inside wiped a palm on the window of their haunted cabin in the woods, peering into the murk to find their melodic silhouettes and tonal shadows transformed from charcoal sketches into lucid dreams with an earthy clarity. This is largely attributable to the fact it was recorded at Nils Frahms’ Durton studio, where the lo-fi graininess and techniques of their early work was brought to life with hi-end engineering and analogue equipment, allowing the duo to articulate their supernatural stories with more evocative detailing and widescreen atmospherics. Opening to the scraped strings and seismic bass shudder of ‘Divided’, you’re ushered striaght through to a world of sound that’s tangibly more powerful, and equally more sensitive, than anything the pair have produced to date, before Totland’s piano anoints the air of centrepiece ‘The Day I Would Never Have’ with ethereal pensiveness and Skodvin’s cello expands like a dense, blackened cloud of smoke. Through the smaller vingettes like ‘Fiction Dawn’, this forested gloom colours the album through to the slow, vacuous pressure system of ‘Close Forever Watching’, its surge of cold black air almost brutally resolving the atmospheric tension. We know how many of you value and cherish their first LP and we can sincerely say that ‘Owl Splinters’ is like returning to a dream you once had, only this time you’re awake and the dream is hauntingly vivid. Essential.

VARIOUS / PLANET MU
14 Tracks From Planet Mu
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Planet Mu
CD // £5.99

’14 Tracks From Planet Mu’ gives a succinct taste of what the exploratory imprint has been up to for the last few years, and where they intend to go with it. The comp is roughly divided between now-established label classics and new material from recent signings, and some veritable veterans. Repping for the last two years the comp touches on Floating Points’ breathtaking debut release ‘K&G Beat’, Jamie Vex’d’s downbeat metamorphosis into Kuedo mode on ‘Starfox’, Rossi B & Luca’s soca-grime ruckus ‘E10 Riddim’, Swindle’s ecstatic ‘Airmiles’ and forward thinking progpop & dance from Ikonika, Rudi Zygadlo, Slugabed and the inimitable Falty DL. On a brand new and exclusive swing, Oriol delivers the frisky bubbler ‘Solar’ next to Irish duo Solar Bears’ pop ambient heartwarmer ‘To Be With Her’ and ‘Parasol’ taken from The Internal Tulips debut album ‘Mislead Into A Field By A Deformed Deer’, and Boxcutter gives the exclusive ‘Ufonik’ feat. Brian Greene, a brilliant excerpt from his forthcoming album, due later this year. Bargain.

HOW TO DRESS WELL
Love Remains (Tri Angle Edition)
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
Tri Angle
CD // £8.99

**2011 Tri Angle Edition** Joining the ranks of Salem and the Tri Angle label, Tom Krell’s ‘How To Dress Well’ project has garnered considerable attention since he first started dropping material about a year ago. Charged by the same fascination with R&B, submerged production techniques and enough fuzz and distortion to satiate the most intoxicated listener, his debut album throws you into a trip though many of the signatures that have made the U.S. electronic underground so compelling and forward thinking over the last 18 months. Ok, many of the ideas are driven by the same retroactive archetypes that fuel so much of what has fallen into the Hypnagogic, Hauntological and W**ch House scenes, but the ability to elicit those feelings without any overtly emotive signatures is what makes the music so satisfying. There’s just a coherence and narrative to the tracklisting that works extremely well, leaving you with an over-arching sense of melancholy that perhaps you weren’t really expecting if you’ve ever listened to, say, a track by Salem. The 14 tracks on ‘Love Remains’ are taken from a number of different self-released EP’s and the material has been remastered – with the distortion and washed out feel kept firmly intact. There are moments that recall the most personal recordings and outtakes of Arthur Russell and others that sparkle with the same bittersweet glamour of Nite Jewel, but if you’ve fallen in love with records by either, or indeed that magnificent oOoOO EP, ‘Love Remains’ will just rule your world. Highly Recommended.

NATURAL SNOW BUILDINGS
Waves Of The Random Sea
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
BLACKEST RAINBOW
2LP // £18.99

**Heavyweight vinyl, gatefold sleeve, features an extra track not on the CD** Natural Snow Buildings are Mehdi Ameziane and Solange Gularte, a duo from France who make experimental psychedelic folk with elemental, raga-esque drones. They record individually as Twinsistermoon and Isengrind, respectively, but together they’ve amassed over 20 releases in the last 10 years, mostly small runs for labels such as Students Of Decay and Digitalis. Their first vinyl release is a sumptuous and diverse suite for Blackest Rainbow involving woozy passages of string heavy drone but also more curious corners of psilocybic folk. The one track to really command our attention is ‘This Ice Fortress’, a whorl of razor-raga drones with a ritualistic breakdown like something from a Harrapian Night Recording track and a closing verse of fairy folk from the same secret glades as Paavoharju. Their longer drones tracks are expertly controlled, as with the pastoral, medieval-sounding ‘Through The Branches In The Layer Of Fog’ and the untethered head-trip of ‘Drift The Water Soul’, recalling the eternal ragas of the recent Barn Owl and Infinite Strings Ensemble album for Important. Gorgeous music.

Singles of the Week

MARTYN & MIKE SLOTT
Collabs Series No. 1
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
All City
12″ // £6.99

Martyn and Mike Slott collude on the first 12″ of a collaborative series from All City. We’d guess there’s a few of you breaking out in sweats already looking at the lineup, and the music should justify your giddiness. ‘All Nights’ is a seriously good-looking swagger-House riddim, all buff dub chords, rumping subs and a deadly percussive palette of slinking bells, slicing snares and densely padded kicks. If the Martyn influence is clear in that one, then ‘Pointing Fingers’ belies a fair input from Mike Slott, set to a grooving mid-tempo swing with cosmic harp and synth interplay on a Flying Lotus tip. Heavy.

THE DURIAN BROTHERS
Cuts EP
ELECTRONIC
DISKANT
12″ // £8.99

An exhilarating rhythm trip from the Durian Brothers trio, aiming to “…produce rough, dense, hypnotic clubmusic”. The ‘Cuts EP’ is their near feral followup to Diskant’s ’08 ‘Clubs EP’, inducing a mesmeric flow of polyrhythmic para-funk with a set up of prepared turntables, sequencer, effects and scuffed, fuzzy electronic treatments. The effect is clearly comparable to the secret rhythms of Burnt Friedman and Jaki Liebezeit or the displaced outernational dub patterns of recent Mark Ernestus remixes, but also with the gritty ruffneck feel of the Harmonious Thelonious project. This all comes together in the longer A-side ‘Overexposed Scream Contest’, a techno-streamlined flood of bone-grinding, hip-synced drumming and whooping junglist hollers for that frenzied Shackleton feel. Meanwhile, the buoyant, bubbling bass and Hawaiian slide guitar of ‘Haisai’ makes it feel like Mark Ernestus’s ‘Masikulu Dub’ versioned by Mike Cooper, and finishing touch ‘Mille Yeux’ comes off like a frothing AfroBalearic slow stomper on its last, bandy legs shuffling in the dirt. Comes housed in fold out sleeve featuring a schematic drawing taken from a 1920s medicine book. Limited to 300 copies – and highly recommended.

MORGAN ZARATE
Hookid EP
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Hyperdub
12″ // £5.49

First Hyperdub drop of 2011 – a stone cold future funk winner from Morgan Zarate. Over the last few years he’s cropped up on the Beat Dimensions and Fat City’s Producer #1 comps, from where his ‘M.A.B’ neck-snapper was lifted and sifted into Kode 9’s DJ-Kicks mix. Opening statement ‘Hookid’ is a straight up scorcher, no question, refracting hyper-reflective R&B-trance hooks through a 3D snakestyle rhythm like Joseph Hammer twysting Terror Danjah. ‘Buy Bye’ is equally dynamic, splaying some hi-tek swing rhythm into supremely psychedelic shapes, kinda like Spacek meets Bernard Parmegiani in Bernie Worrell’s secret Russian space programme-funded anti-G studio. These are gonna make people lose their minds on the ‘floor – should come with free oxygen cannisters. Recommended!!!

LUKE ABBOTT
Trans Forest Alignment (Gavin Russom Mix)
ELECTRONIC
Border Community
12″ // £5.49

Brilliant single taken from Luke Abbott’s ‘Holkham Drones’ debut LP, including the exclusive ‘Caucus Race’ a remarkable remix by Rocketnumbernine and Gavin Russom’s exotic techno version. Abbott’s instinctively timed, hardware-driven experiments are about the best thing on Border Community right now, full of carefully constructed, humid analogue soundscapes with supremely tangible textures and spacious 3D shapes, best heard in the morphosis from euphoric techno to visceral electronic drone zones in ‘A Trans Forest Alignment’. Yet more impressive for us is the stunning remix from Ben and Tom Page aka Rocketnumbernine, who first debuted their sound on Four Tet’s Text label in 2010. Jacking up the tempo and adding acres of wonderful harmonic dissonance their remix is simply unmissable for fans of stirring dancefloor electronics, regardless of style or subset. Gavin Russom serves one of his typically nuanced exotic techno versions on the flip, next to the bleeding raw electrojack of Abbott’s exclusive contribution ‘A Caucus Race’. Recommended!

Wicked little 7″, this, presenting ESG’s timeless ‘Dance’ backed with the propulsive ‘Little Sticks’. The iconic A-side is currently licensed to an Xbox Kinect ad on TV but don’t let that put you off! This track is as deadly as anything in their seminal armory. ‘Little Sticks’ also appeared on the original ‘Come Away With ESG’ LP from 1983 but does the same thing with a more uptempo momentum, driven…

LP // £14.99

**Gatefold sleeve reissue with original artwork** In 1977 Klaus Schulze released his eighth album, ‘Mirage’ through the legendary Brain label – home to many of the greatest Krautrock records. It’s a deeply romantic synthesizer album, in love with his machine’s potential to create and enhance the effect of dreaming without sleeping. ‘Mirage’ comprises two side-long electronic hallucinations only limited by the vinyl’s track length capacity of just under half an…

Irrlicht
SPV
CD // £12.99

“Irrlicht is the solo debut album from Klaus Schulze (originally released in 1972) and is an absolute masterpiece in cosmic, space music. Schulze omitted the use of synthetics for this recording, relying on organ with various electronic effects to produce an absolutely mesmerizing and minimalist body of sounds that transform the listener into a total abstracted world full of mysteries within its almost never-ending spiral. With no electronic pulse and…

Angst
SPV
CD // £12.99

“Originally released in 1984 as the soundtrack for the Austrian judicial scandal documentary film, Angst (a.k.a. Schizophrenia), Schulze’s music acted as a storyline for the unedited film, rather than incidental music added to a completed story, thus allowing the score to drive the film. As stand alone music, Angst is typical of Schulze’s moody, serene and atmospheric symphonic synth bent. The bonus track, Silent Survivor, was recently uncovered in the…

“Klaus Schulze first attracted attention as a member of the German progressive rock band, Tangerine Dream. Following the release of their debut LP, Electronic Meditation, he departed for a solo career. Klaus’ recorded work typically features extended pieces sometimes filling an entire album built around computer-generated synthesizers and other specially programmed electronic effects. Klaus Schulze is widely considered an avant-garde mainstay as well as a founding father of both the…

“Originally released in 1981, Trancefer is a one of the most highly regarded recordings of the Klause Schulze catalogue. Featuring Michael Shrieve on percussion and Wolfgang Tiepold on cello, Trancefer is as the title suggests, full of atmospheric metallic textures and cold timbres that sounds as fresh today as it did in it’s pre-digital day. “Originally released in 1976, Moondawn is an early highlight of Schulze’s voluminous discography, regarded by many as among his best work. Another towering moment from Amon Düül II: a double gatefold repress of the first reissue of ‘Yeti’ in 25 years! It’s your man Move D and UQ personality Jus-Ed at the controls, digging into the secret compartments of their respective record boxes to pluck out a dazzling number…
DEEP SPACE ORCHESTRA
Last Exit EP
APPLIED RHYTHMIC TECHNOLOGY
12″ // £5.99

After warmly received 12″s for Foto and Use Of Weapons, Deep Space Orchestra drop their best release to date on A.R.T. “Last Exit EP’ is ostensibly a techno EP with deep Detroit-House leanings. There’s no mistaking this in ‘Return To Dodge City’, combining propulsive kick drums with groovesome, offset bass and an arresting light show of teased and filtered 313 synthlines. ‘Last Exit’ drops the tempo for a squlechier boogie…

Transit Ways / Seven Days
1XA
12″ // £6.99

Who the f**k is 1XA? Seriously, we’d love to know! The cryptically titled unit return for 2011 recharged and rolling with an even more robust sound, clearly in the mood for a heavy session. ‘Transit Ways’ lays the jack down in killer style, forcing silverback kicks through a humid dub house spray of machined hi-hats, like cold sweat dripping from a shaken basement ceiling while brooding chords carve out arcing…
CABIN FEVER
Cabin Fever Trax Vol. 17: Likewise
REKIDS
12″ // £7.99

**White and Pink Marbled Vinyl** Anthemic one-sided drop from Cabin Fever, pressed up on red streaked white vinyl. The formula is simple but deadly effective; add Nina Simone sample to frisky ’90s garage pattern and underline with massive bassline. Tastemakers from Luciano to Lee Van Dowski have been caning it and it’s topped all the big dance charts. What more do you need to know?
JOE CHURCH
Don’t You Want To Be Mine
Clone Classic Cuts
12″ // £7.99

Total Garage/House music classic from ’87, picked up and reissued for the first time since 1991 by Clone Classic Cuts. Coming from a gospel background, Joe had two hits in the late ’80s, this and ‘I Can’t Wait Too Long (Let Somebody Love You)’ before turning his back on it all to go back to church. Check the Club mix for the real-deal deep soul burn.
SOULED
Sweet Nothings EP
Fresh Minute Music Ltd
12″ // £6.49

Fu*ked-up and frisky House music from Souled, remixer of Altered Native, dropping his second full release on Fresh Minute Music. The soul force is strong in this one, from the hefty symphonic swing of ‘Jam Scam’ to the the electronically enhanced disco-tek vibes of ‘Sweet Nothings’, while ‘Air Tight’ serves a haughty Friday night heater with peaking arrangements and ‘Changin?’ cuts a little deeper on the dubbed and fruity flex….

TERANGA BEAT
2LP // £17.99

Teranga Beats’ first release is a compilation of tracks and unreleased material by Idrissa Diop, the acknowledged progenitor of a subtle fusion of Latin and Senegalese styles known as mbalax. Idy, as he’s better known, grew up in the Guelle Tappé district of Dakar, and would go on to form the influential Sahel group under the auspices of impresario Bass Goumbala, uniting with producer Moussa Diallo to create the nascent…

FINDERS KEEPERS
LP // £12.99

Absolutely Killer collection of niche, mid-70s Thai music tracked down and collated by the irrepressible crew at Finders Keepers. Ever since that 7″ of Sroeng Santi’s Black Sabbath cover sneaked out last year we’ve been aching for the full length set, assured by the bods at FK that it was going be something heavy. The final, outstanding product is unique not only for the fact that many of the tunes…
