Hello,

Hype Williams’ third LP is easily the most addictive substance we’ve encountered since Hershey’s nutrageous bars. They continue to elude and erode concrete classification in the most enigmatic and romantic manner, this time expanding their palette to cover dread smudged House next to more of those uncanny R&B covers and zonked boogie transmissions they’ve perfected over the last year. The limited edition run of 1000 hand-numbered white vinyls are available from us one week upfront, accompanied by our highest possible recommendation.

Also worthy of intense excitement is Rush Hour’s immense 5LP collection of unreleased material dating between 1984-1990 and housed in a beautiful reverse-board silk-screened boxset. The timing of this release couldn’t be more perfect, charting the hidden history of Chicago club music in all it’s psychosexual, experimental and diverse glory. Fans of everyone from Chris & Cosey to Prince or Lil Louis should be placing this high on their wishlist.

The venerable Moritz Von Oswald and his trio – now expanded to include ECM’s Marc Muellbauer and Paul St. Hilaire – stretch out in a refined, jazzwise manner on their 2nd studio album ‘Horizontal Structures’. The blend of instinctive playing and pristine, dubbed afterthoughts is as engaging as the last LP but denser, now with a deeply engrained blue moodiness primed for listening in your convertible Merc or ‘pon the yacht at dusk in Monaco.

Ryoji Ikeda and Carsten Nicolai revive their Cyclo project with a new album exploring the synaesthetic visualization of sound in extremely visceral style. Essentially this means sounds are transposed from visual data and hand-sculpted into alarmingly powerful shapes – this poor sod was left in tears after undergoing its digital extremities. Recommended!

On the shorter formats, Soul Jazz presents a limited edition followup to the E.M.A.K session, covering three tracks of slow synth arrangements for sophisticated ‘floors in Cologne circa 1982. There’s only 500 copies and they’ll fly out! For the post-industrial pop types, meanwhile, Downwards drop an arrestingy melancholy moment from Tropic Of Cancer (aka Silent Servant and Camella Lobo) backed with a possessed and loopy remix from Richard H Kirk that’s going to be getting a lot of plays round this way. Limited, hand numbered copies only!

Back on Nonplus for his 2nd 12″ and first since the incredible ‘Splazsh’ LP, Actress comes with the hard swinging ‘Harrier ATTK’ and the blunted, cyber-boogie Thriller styles of ‘Gershwin’, tipped for all the Autonomic crew and lovers of deadly futuristic funk. For the DJs, Young Turks and XL provide Jamie xx’s tweaked revision of Gil Scott-Heron’s ‘I’ll Take Care Of U’ on a plush 12″ pressing housed in die-cut sleeve and backed with the sumptuous original.
Following Marcel Fengler, Aardvarck and Aubrey among others, 2562 and DJ Rolando chip in to the Skudge remix session with tech-swinging steppers and expertly rearranged Techno voyages, respectively.

Other highlights this week come from James Blake, Baths, Sandwell District, Boxcutter, DJ Spinn, Deep Medi, Photek, Frank Bretschneider, Felix Kubin, Ariel Pink, Roedelius, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Beans, Der Plan, Ostgut and a haul of amazing tapes from the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never, Dylan Ettinger, Julia Holter and others on the NNA Tapes label.

Have yourselves a wonderful week…

Peace! nekkers….xx

Albums of the Week

HYPE WILLIAMS
One Nation
ELECTRONIC
Hippos In Tanks
LP // £14.99

*Upfront Exclusive – Limited to 1000 individually numbered copies for the world, on white vinyl* Pre-eminent H-Pop geniuses, Hype Williams, deliver the crackish satisfaction of ‘One Nation’, their third album proper and first for the hugely exciting Hippos in Tanks label – home to Laurel Halo, Games, SLEEP ∞ OVER, Grimes, D’eon, Autre Ne Veut and others. With the same fugged-up blend of sly insouciance and deceptively naive production that made ‘Find Out What Happens…’ so vital, Denna Francis and Roy D. Blunt have assembled a sublime followup which makes so much else out there seem over-earnest and over-dressed. From the warped VHS signature of ‘Ital’ inwards, their surreal grasp of possessed, private synth music and deliberately economical production is delivered with innate confidence and the blackest humour. Whether it’s the hilariously frank self-help samples and new age tones of the first ‘Untitled’ or the poor chap chatting about Peregrines who is so abruptly cut off in the second ‘Untitled (And Your Batty’s So Round)’ to what sounds like a “chillout” version of track 3 from Pita’s ‘Get Out’, the juxtapositions are knowingly acute and unforced. It’s partly that aspect, the fluid transfer of concise but free wandering thought processes into sound, and their consolidation of free psyche methods with a bass-soaked UK flavour, that makes their music so interesting while keeping their semi-conscious illusion so intact and enigmatic. Also, by eschewing glossy production they’ve cut straight to the essence, or the truth of the matter, and this is a mighty, mighty beautiful thing. Inside ‘One Nation’ you’ll find some potential future favourites like the gobsmacking post-House condensation of ‘Mitsubishi’, the Juicy Fruit tang of ‘William, Shotgun Sprayer’, the brittle but gloopy slowfast vibe of ‘Warlord’ and the heart-melting R&B cover ‘Your Girl Smells Chung When She Wears Dior’, all heard through their inimitably cracked veneer. What Hype Williams hold back is equal to what they put in and this sense of considered restraint makes for a listeining experience pretty much unlike anything out there. And ultimately, beyond the haze of mystery, ‘One Nation’ is a moving, romantic, almost melancholy listening experience, and one we just cannot stop playing. Beyond essential.

VIRGO FOUR
Resurrection (Limited Edition Box Set)
TECHNO / HOUSE
Rush Hour
5LP Deluxe Box Set // £39.99

*Absolutely mindblowing 30-track collection of unreleased material from Chicago House pioneers Virgo, dusted off and now brought to the world courtesy of Rush Hour* Incredible and luxurious vinyl boxset compiling 30 (!!!) previously unreleased Virgo tracks dating between 1984-1990!!! It follows Rush Hour’s honourable reissue of their eponymous album in 2010, and is a result of the label scouring 100s of 4-track tapes that had been untouched and unreleased due to local record business politics and disinterest. As the mood is ripe for vintage Chicago gear the timing of this album couldn’t be any more perfect, offering a glimpse into the more esoteric, experimental and diverse riches of House and electronic music’s hidden history. Initial highlights have to be the fluid groove transmission of ‘Sex’, the sub-weighty depths of ‘Let The Music Play’, the Chris & Cosey-esque ‘Lost Inside Of You’, and the gobsmacking anthem potential of ‘I Have Always Wanted’, but genuinely, nearly every track is pure killer and sounding all the better for a prime remastering job. The vinyl set comes housed in a handsome, silk-screened box housing 5LPs, each containing six tracks, plus a 30x30cm insert with photos and sleeve notes. HUGELY recommended!!!

MORITZ VON OSWALD TRIO
Horizontal Structures
TECHNO / HOUSE
Honest Jon’s Records
2LP // £12.99

Following the almost unanimous praise for their previous studio masterpiece, Moritz Von Oswald (Maurizio/Rhythm & Sound), Max Loderbauer (Nsi./Sun Electric) and Sasu Ripatti (Vladislav Delay) present ‘Horizontal Structures’, the jazz-suave and rolling x-axis to the kosmische y of ‘Vertical Ascent’. The curve of their projections becomes more complex with the addition of Paul St. Hilaire (aka Tikiman) on guitar and ECM artist, Marc Muellbauer’s double bass infusing deeply instinctive jazz moves into the cats-cradle of organ, percussion and electronics. There’s a more leveled spirit and cruising groove to this album, their deft interactions creating a deeply engrained blue moodiness and playful efficacy whose potential is beautifully rendered in Moritz’s mixing desk. As the elements begin to fuse like condensed gas particles in the bell jar sphere of ‘Structure One’ its clear to hear the group’s evolution as the groove subliminally coalesces with a looseness that wasn’t there before, Tiki’s Afro-lilting guitar swirling about like fragrant hashish smoke and Muellbauer’s eyes-shut bass adding daubs of melodic colouration. ‘Structure 2’ is more urgent and soundtrack-y, melody stripped back while the rhythm section ripples away with infinite Krautrock essence, before ‘Structure 3’ reintroduces the dub with moonboot skank rhythm hinging on crisp snare punctuations and offset chords in the dreamiest headspace. The 20 minute ‘Structure 4’ is perhaps the craftiest, Moritz the mixing board illusionist deftly weaving the acoustic and electronic, the synthetic and the real with a sleight of hand that makes this music at once electro-acoustic jazz and dub concrète, yet with the fundamental grace and glide of deep techno. Highly recommended!

CYCLO
id
ELECTRONIC
Raster Noton
CD // £11.99

Ryoji Ikeda and Carsten Nicolai first premiered their collaborative Cyclo project a deacde ago on Raster Noton. Relaunching in 2011 they’re just as intent on creating a synaesthetic visualization of sound that “…seeks to create a new hybrid of visual art and music”. Essentially the sounds on ‘Id’ are inextricable from their visual corollary. They’re the unmastered sonic illustrations of detailed graphical data, and vice versa, developed from a database of sounds composed to produce visual responses when analysed in real time with the help of stereo image monitoring equipment. Most importantly, the sounds are subservient to the image, hence the record remains purposefully unmastered in order to retain the waveform’s original integrity when visualized through an XY phase scope, transcending the usual sound>image dynamic. But that’s not to say that the music doesn’t possess its own heightened, strangely affecting quality – within 30 seconds of listening through headphones this reviewer’s eyes were watering, a physically visceral effect if we’ve ever felt one. A man-sized Kleenex later and we discover that, unlike its relatively austere predecessor, the sounds within cover a wider spectrum of rhythms, from spasmodic digital pulses to lightyears-advanced electro syncopation, and similarly a dazzling frequency range capable of causing acutely synaesthetic reactions. All this leads us to think that ‘Id’ is a work of uncompromising genius, at once cementing and advancing Ikeda and Nicolai’s relentlessly ongoing audio/visual quest. Highly recommended! *Shipping for the release date of March 7th*

Singles of the Week

E.M.A.K. (ELECTRONISCHE MUSIK AUS KOLN)
Tanz In Den Himmel
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
Soul Jazz
12″ // £5.99

**Limited to 500 copies!** Soul Jazz have just made our week with the release of three exclusive minimal synth/coldwave tracks from the legendary E.M.A.K studios. None of these appeared on the recent E.M.A.K album, but for our money they’re even better than anything on it. Both the Carpenter-esque ‘Tanz In Der Himmel’ and ‘Slow Motion’ are killer Drag-style electro rhythms ripe for sleazing on attaches at the ambassadors disco in Cologne, while ‘Auf Immer’ is a beautiful near beatless piece to soundtrack what happens afterwards. ESSENTIAL!!!

TROPIC OF CANCER
Be Brave
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
DOWNWARDS
10″ // £7.99

Incredible 2nd single from underground secrets, Tropic Of Cancer, featuring a possessed rewiring by Richard H Kirk! If you picked up their previous 10″, ‘The Dull Age’ you’ve likely clicked buy already, but if you were too slow that day (they sold out in a flash) you reallllly don’t want to miss out again. Their original ‘Brave World’ is blank-eyed Industrial goth music of the highest order, powered by brittle, bony drums and hypnotised by a mournful bassline and coated in grey flannel drones, Mendez’s vocals pushed deep in the mix to haunt from within. Affecting with an eerier, dubbed-out essence, Richard H Kirk bleaches the whole thing at his mixing desk to leave behind porous, skeletal remains, which are deftly looped into swaying moire of semi-conscious patterns for that dosed-up doom disco potency. Highly recommended to darkside fiends of all persuasions.

ACTRESS
Harrier ATTK / Gershwin
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Nonplus Records
12″ // £7.99

Actress drops his first release since the milestone ‘Splazsh’ LP with two killers for Nonplus. It follows last years surprise entry ‘Machine & Voice’ with a similar dancefloor slant, especially on the hard swinging archival track ‘Harrier ATTK’. Like much of his gear it’s practically devoid of discernable bass (compared with your average dubstep tune), but like his idol, Drexciya, much of the energy comes from uniquely programmed syncopation and textures that bite and graze instead of punching you in the stomach, while the lead riff is just pure electro emo. On the flip ‘Gershwin’ is more akin to something from his Thriller sessions, a squashed and smudged underwater R&B number warped with coruscating filters and with the surfaces of his one-man submersible about to buckle under the deep sea pressure. Killer!

GIL SCOTT-HERON & JAMIE XX
I’ll Take Care Of U
ELECTRONIC
XL
12″ // £4.99

Jamie’s Housed-up highlight from the ‘We’re New Here’ LP receives a plush, 12″ pressing housed in die cut sleeve, backed with a special DJ version. The sensitively sparse version of ‘I’ll Take Care Of U’ flips Gil into a cruising House rhythm licked with Balearic guitar from Romy xx, while the ‘Special DJ Version’ sets to work tweaking the drums and shuffling the arrangement for maximum dancefloor impact. Either way, you should have shivers down your spine to this record. Big TIP!!!

SKUDGE / 2562
Skudge Remixes Part 3 ( DJ Rolando / 2562 Mixes)
TECHNO / HOUSE
Skudge
12″ // £8.99

DJ Rolando and 2562 are responsible for the 3rd session of Skudge remixes. Following Aardvarck’s lead, 2562 tackles ‘Convolution’, transforming it into a heaving halfstep swinger with tightly compressed percussion and acres of dubby headspace sparingly coloured with subtly daubed chords. Remixing ‘Ontic’ on the flip, Rolando adds his own vocals intoning “it’s a spiritual thing/a body thing” while augmenting the rhythm with a slinkier copulation of silvery hi-hats and churning toms, beautifully measured for ‘floor triggering tension/release. Respectful of the class A material inside, the label have given this one a proper full colour sleeve and everything! Killer twelve – don’t miss.

BATHS

Anticon
7″ // £4.49

*White Vinyl* Will Weisenfeld’s Baths unit drops a suer limited single following last years ‘Cerulean’ album for Anticon. It’s a soggy fusion of West Coast psyche-hop styles and super-melodic dream pop, threading vocals over tumultuous, underwater pitching rhythms, kinda like Eskmo meets The Postal Service if you will. Flipside ‘Nightly, Daily’ is more pastoral, still driven by those soggy rhythms but with more space for a tender, acoustic guitar and…

In tune with the like-minded Lucky Me and Low End Theory crews, Salva runs the Frite Nite label, home to records and remixes from B. *Featuring exclusive, previously unreleased material from Leyland Kirby, Goldmund, Peter Broderick, Jacaszek, The Fun Years, Svarte Greiner, Rafael Anton Irisarri and more* Ghostly International inaugurate their new yearly SMM series with a sterling selection of modern adult contemporary, minimalism and evocative imaginary soundscaping. The fragile beauty of Goldmund’s ‘Motion’ sets the mood, before Leyland Kirby, pre-eminent master of queasy ambient, offers the grey swoon of ‘Polaroid’ and Svarte Greiner (Erik…
NADJA
Belles Bêtes
BETA-LACTAM RING
CD // £13.99

“Warning: not recommended for listening in buildings without earthquake retrofitting: Nadja’s doom-fuzz may crack foundations and/or reduce nearby objects to jelly. However, Nadja, here performing a quartet of solo Aidan Baker covers, maintains a certain melodic balance within the throat-clearing guitar lurches which levitates the heavy, like the most graceful pterodactyl-flying-off-with-a-dead-baby-Icthyasaur you have ever seen. Especially when his voice cuts in, the low-end maraud transforms into a sweet continuo that…

“Windmills by the Ocean returns from obscurity to deliver an unexpected and stunning second album years in the making. Awash in waves of droney guitars, lush melodies and vocals, II is a truly hypnotic follow-up to their self-titled debut. The band reaches far beyond the limits of post-rock with five varied tracks that are at times haunting, captivating, oppressive and triumphant. A release of this caliber could only come from…

Duff Disco traps the ‘floor in his drag disco loops with two exclusive single tracks before his ‘Getting To Sirius’ album drops. ‘Catch Me Out’ gets locked in the disco wind tunnel with a bass rich arrangement of hypnotic loops set to 107bpm and teased into bum gripping flow. On the flip ‘You Wish’ drops the pace some more to sample a HipHop classic and get away with it in…
MID AIR

12″ // £6.99

Reissue of scorching ’83 Boogie rarity outta Chicago! The A-side is the full vocal version backed with dazzling synths, body-controlling drum machines and pure Funk vibes. B-side is dubbed with some killer fake-out edits for the dancers. This is the kind of gear that less scrupulous (but clever) DJs will sell their nana’s horse brass for. TIP!

Getting To Sirius Remix EP #2
Join The Dots Music
12″ // £6.49

Duffstep hands ‘Your Touch’ from his ‘Getting To Sirius’ LP to the master of slo-mo, Mark E, with further mixes from Riley Reinhold and Session Victim. No doubt, it’s all about Mark E’s sophisticated touch spanning the A-side, evening and spacing out the original with learned finesse and a sublime groove control that’s rarely matched right now. Dapper, cut-up Garage of the UK and US persuasion from Jason Hopfner trading under the Knowing Looks title. I was about to make a comparison with Akufen, then noticed that he’s already released on Musique Risquée a couple years ago, which backs that up! ‘Abandoned Skip’ is Garage of the UK, 2-stepped variety, stripped to the bare bones and set on a crooked mission with wormy drones and kinky-shuffled patterns….
BOXCUTTER

The title of the lead track is a reference to gene mutation and that’s exactly what he’s doing inside, splicing and morphing strands of bobbling Footwork toms with dubbed out techno stabs and jagged hardcore jungle breaks in classic Boxcutter style, only this time he’s removed the polished veneer to…
KRYPTIC MINDS
Can’t Sleep / Make You Sleep
BLACK BOX
12″ // £6.49

Kryptic Minds link with two vocalists, Emika and Alys Be for one of their finest plates to date. ‘Can’t Sleep’ is wired with dubstep diva vocals from Alys Be, suited perfectly to their superior halfstep dread signatures. By contrast, Emika plays the sandwoman on ‘Make You Sleep’, all hushed, breathy tones cloaking a heavy-lidded and droning halfstep abstraction like something from the Various Production textbook. Ace.
OPTIMUM
Light Year / DS-10
Hum & Buzz Records
12″ // £5.99

Ikonika’s Hum & Buzz label co-owner Optimum goes alone on two robust Electro-Techy DJ tools. The formula for ‘Light Speed’ is simple but precise, factoring knee-knocking subs under Housed-up claps, cheeky but sparingly-used snare rushes and a bitter, grimy lead synth. ‘DS10’ is more rugged, factoring the discombobulated machine patterns of Footwork into the kind of 134bpm Tech styles which Ikonika or Boddika and co are pushing right now.

Migrant romps over the A-side with murderous breakstep force on ‘Monolith’, while Octa Push take K-Tronik on a hyped-up bashment twyst with ‘Legos’ and Cardopusher rules it with the augmented ‘ardcore reggaeton of his ‘Dembow Together’ rhythm.
HIZATRON / MR SCRUFF
Producer 3 Part 2
FAT CITY
12″ // £6.99

Fat City reissue Hizatron’s Berkane Sol cut, ‘Von Glooperstein’ backed with a fonky Mr Scruff mix. The original is a fairly obscure piece of mnml techno engineering from the Midlands, which Scruff reworks with a big bag of spanners and some exotic drums to get it up and dancing. Good twelve!
V.I.V.E.K.
Pulse / Roots
Deep Medi
12″ // £5.99

Purest halfstep riddims from V.I.V.E.K. ‘Pulse’ is like an enhanced version of Deep Medi’s classic first release, Kromestar’s ‘Surgery’, with life-suporting bleeps staying rocksteady over tectonic bass quakes. ‘Roots’ is more atmospheric, creating a humid jungle ambience around fluid hardcore bass flow while icy hi-hats and sub-continental percussion coolly keep time. Quality plate.

**c30, colour j-card with colour insert** “Montréal, Quebec’s Francesco De Gallo recreates an atmosphere akin to drifting off to sleep at 4am while watching Unsolved Mysteries re-runs. Eerie ‘Hearts of Space’ moments meets deep harmonic clouds rising above an unsettling alien landscape.” Pillow-soft, neon-pastel synth shades and indistinct, fuzzy shapes. Proper floatation tank material.

NNA TAPES
Cassette // £5.99

**c24, colour j-card with colour insert** “Catacombs of electronic espionage from former Raccoo-oo-oon member Daren Ho. A tape of many chambers, each containing clues to greater unknown.”. Brilliantly suggestive and cinematically potent sounds. Accomplished, Roedelius-like keys mix with deeply layered atmospheric textures. One of the finest releases we’ve heard on this label.
LUST FOR YOUTH
Bodies In Barrels
NNA TAPES
Cassette // £5.99

**c23, colour j-card with colour insert** “Swedish duo Lust For Youth produce two sides of barren serenity, settled in a thick, gaseous haze of industrial pollution. Beds of distant synth melodies wander through bleak noise textures and rhythms.” Viscous, de-tuned mentasm-like drones and stabbing flashbacks to comfortingly desolate early hours moments, delightfully disorientating.
FELIX KUBIN & ENSEMBLE INTEGRALES
Echohaus
DEKORDER
CD // £12.99

If you’ve heard of Felix Kubin before, you’ll likely think you have some idea of how ‘Echohaus’ is going to sound. Well forget what you know, you’re wrong – Kubin’s well-worn Sci-Fi pop stylings are entirely erased on ‘Echohaus’ as he rebuilds people’s preconceptions from the ground up. He may have just scored a long-deserved Wire cover, but Kubin is not content to simply rest on his laurels, and although…

ROEDELIUS
Gift Of The Moment / Geschenk des Augenblicks
Bureau B
LP // £13.99

Reissue of Hans-Joachim’s eleventh – and best selling – solo album, originally released in 1984 by Editions EG. Arriving at the tail end of what many would call his golden period, ‘Gift Of The Moment’ features eleven compositions by former Cluster/Harmonia man, Roedelius accompanied by Dutch classical cellist, Arjen Uittenbogaard, and violinist Tjitse Letterie. It almost completes his transition from electronic music to a purely instrumental, conventionally classical arrangement, or…

PALE SKETCHER / KING MIDAS SOUND
Seventh Heaven EP
Ghostly International
Mini LP // £13.99

*Super-limited grey vinyl pressing, includes the excellent King Midas Sound remix and 4 other tracks* Pale Sketcher is the result of Jesu and Godflesh’s Justin K Broadrick experimenting with hybrids of shoegaze, swinging hardcore techno and metal dynamics. ‘Seventh Heaven’ fits Submerse-like garage patterns into an epic Jesu framework, whereas ‘The Rainy Season’ hits a melancholy hardcore breakstep vibe akin to his Tech Level 2 productions. The slow pulsing ambient…

CD // £13.49

Kreidler might be on their umpteenth album now, but by the sounds of ‘Tank’ they have hit upon a creative streak that belies their age. In fact ‘Tank’ is probably their most creatively successful album to date, and it manages this (oddly enough) by looking backwards, rather than forwards. JAMES BLAKE
The Wilhelm Scream
Atlas Recordings
12″ // £4.99

Arriving shortly after his extraordinary, eponymous debut LP, James Blake drops one its many highlights, ‘The Wilhelm Scream’ backed with two new and exclusive songs ‘What Was It You Said About Luck’ and ‘Half Heat Full (Old Circular)’. If anything, the pristine electro-acoustic dynamism of ‘The Wilhelm Scream’ sounds even more dazzling given it’s own side and pressed to 45rpm, his intentions coming through super crisp and clear. His new…
THE TIME AND SPACE MACHINE
Turns You On
5D RECORDINGS
CD // £9.99

‘Turns You On’ compiles 15 of the best of The Time & Space Machine’s ultra-limited, previously vinyl-only psychedelic edits. From horizontal washes of oriental psychedelia on ‘Fire & Ice’ to percussive psyche-funk on ‘Lesson One’, axe-wielding rock on ‘Psychedelic Circus’ and the lysergic folk of ‘Time & Space Taxi’ this is more than your recommended daily dose of the psychedelic stuff.
BEN BUTLER & MOUSEPAD
Formed For Fantasy
LOAF
CD // £10.99

Ben Butler and Mousepad turned up in a few notable places during 2010, appearing on a tidy 7″ for Skwee imprint Dødpop and receiving some love from the XXJFG blog who called his music “a research / development program illuminating the forbidden no mans land between opulentprog and squashedfunk virtuosities”. That just about sums up ‘Formed For Fantasy’ in its entirety; 40 minutes of überfunked pop acrobatics, kinda like Hot…

10″ // £5.99

“For this limited edition single, the songs were performed by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy & The Cairo Gang with Ben Boye, Van Campbell, Danny Kiely and Angel Olsen, who toured in the latter half of 2010 with Bonny & Cairo. Special guest Rob Mazurek (whose work brought air and light to Bonny’s Beware) solos delicate on “Island Brothers,” which features stacked harmonies from Bonny, Cairo and Angel. One Little Indian
7″ // £3.99

Icelandic singer-songwriter Olof Arnalds is probably best known for having served time in Icelandic Kings and Queens of twee electronic pop Mum. Her latest single carries on that Icelandic pastime with the distinct sound of the Ukulele appearing first, before Arnalds’ sweet tones appear with a warming naivety. Wait, though – is that Bjork I hear in the background? Yes indeed, Iceland’s most hallowed daughter (or should that be dottir?)…
MICHAEL CHAPMAN
Trainsong: Guitar Compositions 1967–2010
TOMPKINS SQUARE
2CD // £14.99

Michael Chapman has led an intriguing life; starting off as an art teacher, he eventually emerged on the music scene in the late 60s with the phenomenal album ‘Rainmaker’. This album on the acclaimed Harvest imprint cemented his status (then and now) as one of the scene’s finest writers, and since then he has released an enviable selection of recordings. Recently his work has enjoyed a rebirth, and this collection…

Commendable De Stijl reissue of ’60s improvisor/instrument maker Charlie Nothing’s totemic and highly sought after private press ‘Outside/Inside’, the follow-up to his equally obscure ‘Psychedelic Saxophone Of…’ recorded a couple years earlier in 1967. The aura of this record hits you from the off, taking you right into their communal ’60s west coast hippy vibe with entrancing, ritualistic hand-drums from Tox Drohan and Charlie’s deeply channelled reed blowing sweet and…

Initially part of the sorely missed 90s Glasgow DIY scene (as part of El Hombre Trajeado), RM Hubbert has since moved over to a more singular sound. CD // £13.99

To my ears Harold Budd’s signature piano sound and Robin Guthrie’s patented Cocteau Twins shimmer have always been two elements made for each other. Scottish composer and multi-instrumentalist Bill Wells teams up with To Rococo Rot’s Stefan Schneider for his latest project. Wells performs at the piano while Schneider records his performance via old reel-to-reel tape machines, playing the music back at altered speeds. 12″ // £7.99

Data steps off into esoteric D&B space with two special deliveries for Blackout Music. ‘Burning Paradise’ doesn’t comfortably fit into D&B or dubstep parameters, although it’s tempo would suggest the former. Like the dBridge/Instra:mental/Skream entry for Autonomic, data really sets to work with unpredictable snare placements and generally crafty-as-f*ck programming on this one, while ‘Prognosis’ is slightly easy to grasp (beatmatch) on a slick and techy minimal halfstep tip.
