Hello,

Back in January Demdike Stare caused a commotion with their ‘Osmosis’ mix CD, and as we approach the end of the year they present the followup: ‘Industrial Desert’, a 60 minute trip through mostly unreleased, super obscure and vastly scoped sonic topographies, from psilocybic folk meadows through black hole drone vortices and onto the exalted planes of spiritual jazz, guided by two trustworthy shamens. It’s picking season and the conditions are perfect for this mix, housed in a lovely waxed card slipcase.

Brother Raven is a project that’s had the synth/kosmische/drone heads in a spin, and following on from the astro-trajectory of their ‘VSS-30’ LP last month they return with ‘Diving In The Pineapple’, another killer drift into washed out tones and organically evolving melodies, this time with a more earthbound gravity. There’s a distinctly pastoral feel to the tracks on the LP, while an accompanying cassette (only available for first 100 copies) goes somewhere darker, experimenting with drum machines in a woozy dream state. Fans of Dolphins Into The Future and James Ferraro’s more exotic sides should pick this up – the special edition we have in stock comes with the bonus cassette album included, but be warned – we just have 50 available.

If you loved this years album by The Alps make sure to check out Date Palms, a new project featuring Kranky’s Gregg Kowalsky in collaboration with Marielle Jakobson and some special guests. Their debut album “Of Psalms” plays like a widescreen Raga adaptation with endless vistas in mind, evoking the spirit of Morricone and early Air in fine style. It comes on a limited vinyl pressing courtesy of the good folk at Root Strata – make sure to check it out.

A contemporary of James Ferraro, Oneohtrix and Spencer Clark, Dolphins Into The Future delivers his long awaited debut vinyl release with the Hawaiian dreams of ‘Ke Ala Ke Kua’, from his base in Antwerp, Belgium. This is escapist music of the most intimate, narcotic nature, created in a lucid dream state after two weeks of sleep deprivation and guided by the hand of instinct into lushly blurred and groggy tones with a warm, Pacific sensibility. These are seriously limited, so don’t sleep! (Until you’ve got one)

Skjolbrot’s ‘Maersk’ is the debut release from a very promising sound artist from Bristol. It offers a mesh of disparate yet coherent reference points to triangulate a peculiar and deeply engrossing sound world recalling The Caretaker, Thomas Köner and Philip Jeck, but with a unique feel for spectral ambience and the all important, unknown. You might struggle to put a finger on it for the first few listens but there’s something deeply weird and wired about this album that’s got people like the Wire and Touch singing it’s praises.

Silvester Anfang’s Edgar Wappenhalter has made one of the most brilliantly brain–scrambling records of recent times with “On The Beach”, combining out-there Kosmische, psych-folk and tapeloop drones in a remarkably fresh and immersive fashion. The album basically plays through passages of so many strands of music we love, combining them into a brilliant and hazy patchwork of original ideas that comes highly recommended.

Greg Davis and Bird Show’s Ben Vida, meanwhile, deliver an absolute masterclass in analogue synthesiser sound design using assorted Korg and Moog instruments (plus one or two more exotic devices) for some of the finest free-roaming signal manipulations you’ll hear all year. If you’ve been following the string of amazing releases from Keith Fullerton Whitman this year, this will blow your mind.

A string of releases from Maxmillion Dunbar have put an individual stamp on the whole ’80s boogie/drum machine workout style. With nods to NWAQ or Actress, his ‘Cool Water’ LP for Ramp is full of psyched synthlines and crisp drum machines tempered with just the right amount of grit and personality. If you’re feeling VHS Head or Games too, you should really check this out.

Other highlighted albums this week feature from Teebs, Tim Hecker, Peter Gordon and Love Of Life Orchestra, Morgan Packard, Susumu Yokota, Sufjan Stevens, Benoit Pioulard, Antony & The Johnsons, John Roberts, Matthew Herbert, the killer “Township Funk” compilation of emerging Kwaito from South Africa, and the last ever release from the excellent Mobeer label.

On the singles front, things this week are owned by James Blake, surely one of the most gifted and forward thinking producers of the day. His Klavierwerke EP is already making waves across all ends of the musical spectrum, and rightly so, he makes a kind of smudged and deeply affecting sound that really sounds like little else out there. Chain Reaction legend Vainqueur, meanwhile, returns with a first solo outing for over 13 years for his own Scion Versions imprint, and seems to effortlessly illustrate why he is so venerated among techno and dub heads. Heavy hitting twelves also feature from Elgato, Untold, Roska, Regis & Female’s ‘Reality or Nothing’ project, Jimmy Edgar, the Burial-produced Jamie Woon, Julio Bashmore, DVA, A Made Up Sound, QNS, Ancient Methods, Skudge, Velour and Gold Panda.

Have yourselves a wonderful week…

Peace! Nekkers….xx

Albums of the Week

DEMDIKE STARE
Industrial Desert
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
Demdike Stare
CD // £5.99

*Brand new 60 minute mix CD from Demdike Stare, a follow-up to the ‘Osmosis’ mix from the start of the year* As we enter the darkest phase of year, your trusted shamens offer an absorbing autumnal almanac. ‘Industrial Desert’ is a follow up to their ‘Osmosis’ mix CD, rifling through their archives and boxes again to provide a kind of cryptic puzzle for the deepest diggers, or equally a psilocybic collage ripe for picking season. Their selections are as broad and esoteric as we’ve come to expect, ranging from arcane folk fed through proto-techno wormholes, to exalted krautrock and the richest jazz, all infected with deep vein drone throbs and spores of mossy ambience, triggering imagery of hulking red brick millhouses and valleys where the light arrives late and leaves early. Their journey traverses a precarious path but we’re safe in the knowledge that they’ve been here before and returned unscathed. Only just. If you’ve had the pleasure of witnessing their semi-improvised live show then you’ll probably feel a familiarity with some of the sounds here, but they seem to be increasingly skilled with their creative looms, weaving ever more intricate and arabesque patterns into their warp and weft…

BROTHER RAVEN
Diving Into The Pineapple Portal (Special Edition W/Cassette)
ELECTRONIC
Aguirre
LP + Cassette // £15.99

**Strictly limited edition – includes a bonus cassette album ‘Eaglevision’** Brother Raven’s Jamie Potter and Jason E. Anderson explore their multitude of vintage analog synthesizers and keyboards with a blissful transmission for Belgium’s Aguirre Records. It’s their second vinyl offering in almost as many months, following the cosmic experience of ‘VSS-30’ with a more pastoral, tropically breezy drift of washed-out tones and chirruping mechanical organisms. ‘Diving Into The Pineapple Portal’ occupies most of the first side with an untethered strafe across bloopy analogue textures and Escher-esque synth spirals buffeted by ferric drafts until they float like spores in an artificial paradise. This definitely has all the hallmarks of vintage Kosmische, but the duo pull it off with that essentially sly touch that clearly avoids becoming mere cliche and operates more as a sort of mystical confession. ‘Speaking Whale From My Canoe’ opens the other side with an altered sense of shape and space, changing the tonal palette to glassier, more resonant sounds reminiscent of mid-70s Harmonia and Eno with an undercurrent of very softly burred bass rhythm, while ‘Happy Astronaut’ is happy to lie back and blow bubbles while looking at the moon. For us however, the biggest treat is the accompanying cassette, featuring a blend of more rhythm based experimentation and defined melodic structures while maintaining the potently woozy, unresolved effect of the vinyl. Nearly 1.5 hours worth of ready-made synth dreams in total, snap it up while you can.

GREG DAVIS & BEN VIDA
Greg Davis & Ben Vida
ELECTRONIC
AUTUMN
CD // £7.99

This new collaboration between the prolific Greg Davis and Bird Show’s Ben Vida is an absolute masterclass in analogue synthesizer sound design. Over the course of half an hour or so these two musicians line up their assorted Korg and Moog instruments (plus one or two more exotic devices) for some of the finest free-roaming signal manipulations you’ll hear all year. Comparable to Keith Fullerton Whitman’s recent achievements in the field, this album conjures crisp and contoured musical shapes at every turn, whether delving into the richly polymorphous universe of ‘Brilliance’ or flurrying through the continually shifting overtones and ruptured tunings of ‘Piper’. Considering the very specific, even self-restrictive sonic agenda set out by these recordings, the two collaborators dart between ideas at quite a rate, knuckling down to the methodical phasing experiments of ‘Shift’ one moment only to explore a more chaotic, almost percussive environment (such as the excellent ‘Bristles’) the next. In addition to the more fully developed pieces on the album there are a couple of ear-teasing miniatures; one of these, ‘Drop’ covers a sizable chunk of the audible frequency range in a flurry of pure electrical signals – over the course of 48 seconds divebombing into sub-bass plunges from high-up bird-like oscillator twitterings. Speaking of imitative noises, the final piece, ‘Canopy’ is an incredible rainforest-like soundscape mimicking tropical fauna with an elaborate tangle of wandering whistles and whoops. A real joy to the ears for anyone a bit partial to analogue electronic music in its rawest form, this eponymous first outing from Vida and Davis comes highly recommended.

DOLPHINS INTO THE FUTURE
KE ALA KE KUA
ELECTRONIC
(K-RAA-K)3
LP // £10.99

Dolphins Into The Future is the alter ego of Lieven Martens, a hugely intriguing character at the core of the whole kosmische/knew-age synth revival. From his base (presumably) in a floatation tank somewhere in Antwerp, Belgium, he runs the Cetacean Nation Cassettes and Dreamtime Taped sounds labels, home to tape releases from James Ferraro, Uton and Oneohtrix Point Never among others, and a tonne of his own virtual soundscaping experiments. ‘Ke Ala Ke Kua’ is his vinyl debut, “A lucid collage using tapes, synthesizer, two portable cassette players with pitchshifting, regular cassette deck, small hand instruments, alt saxophone, cassette four track, and recordings of Pacific Ocean waves floating in Seven, Polynesian choirs, simulated poly-rhythms, and site specific bird sounds. The composition is translated into three chapters, to evoke the extreme dramatics, spirit, multi dimensions and beauty of Kealakekua Bay, the God’s pathway”. More interestingly Lieven completed the LP while in a lucid wake-dream state after two weeks of self-implemented sleep deprivation, heavy-going by anyone’s standards! The results are potently somnambulant to say the least, plotting instinctive coordinates between his sources to create artificial bubbles of blissed-up and washed out 2D new age hallucinations. Listening to this while operating heavy machinery or doing anything remotely taxing really isn’t recommended! Its quite easy to hear why the likes of Oneohtrix and James Ferraro appreciate this guy so much, he totally nails the vibe of their most smudged, intuitive and evocative moments, think ‘Last American Hero’ gone to Hawaii for a sabbatical or ‘Russian Mind’ with more volcanoes and picture postcard beach scenes, with a briefcase full of prescription pharmaceuticals for company. We’ll leave the awesome A4 sleevenotes for you to discover yourself, if you wish to do so. We’ve only got 50 copies of this, housed in colour picture sleeves. Highly recommended to the most smudged and dreamy heads!

MAXMILLION DUNBAR
Cool Water
BEATS / DOWNTEMPO / BOOGIE
Ramp Recordings
CD // £9.99

Cool Water’ is Maxmillion Dunbar’s debut album, and one of the best records Ramp have released this year. It follows two teasing 12″s which established Dunbar’s brand of screwed Boogie and slow disco dreams within the orbits of neon ’80s revisionism and something slightly more psyched and avant, at once within the scene, and just outside out of it. The trippily smudged ‘Girls Dream’ is just one highlight among many here, embedded in a set of complementary drum machine workouts weaved with hazy samples and studied synth washes. ‘Pretty Please’ sets the agenda with heavyweight ’80s R’n’B bowing at the altar of Prince, but imbued with a lushly psyched drift. ‘Sno Mega’ follows into a more exotic space perfumed with cosmic synths and spiked with ominous Afro vibes, while ‘Rhythm Track For Rashied Ali’ pays tribute to that anomalous strain of American ’80s R’n’B, Chicago House, in wickedly freeform style. We also get a sparse, beats-driven version of ‘Lemon & Lime’ from his previous 12″, followed by the darkly cinematic pre-cert vibe of ‘Original Soundtrack Flutes’, kinda like a less glitchy VHS Head cut, or a minimalist Games. ‘Breathe What You Say’ finishes on a beatless experimental tip, savouring the effect of warped vocoder vox and morphing synth shapes with a distinct pleasure. Highly Recommended.

EDGAR WAPPENHALTER (SILVESTER ANFANG)
On The Beach
ELECTRONIC
MORC
LP // £12.99

Edgar Wappenhalter is a co-founder of Belgian psychedelic occultists Silvester Anfang and the Funeral Folk collective, and this amazing, brain-scrambling solo outing finds him combining his affection for out-there Kosmische, psych-folk and tapeloop drones in a remarkably fresh and immersive fashion. If the album title had you expecting a Neil Young tribute, think again. You’ll still find some gorgeously submerged songwriting hidden away on here – particularly the reverb-corroded tones of acoustic guitar-driven jams ‘Missing Heights’ and ‘Dierenriem’ – but it comes bundled with some impressively experimental fare such as the metronomic space blues of ‘As The Kid’s Clock Breathes Sweet Hasjiesj’ or the clockwork lo-fi distortions of ‘Last Call Before The Tide’. Better yet are ‘The Cyclone’, a surreal campfire techno experiment, and the flotation tank kosmische opus ‘Revelatory Pathways To A Place Of Rebirth’. “On The Beach” basically plays through passages of every kind of music that we love, combining them into a brilliant and hazy patchwork of original ideas that we just can’t stop listening to. Amazing album – very highly recommended!

SKJOLBROT
Maersk
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
Skjolbrot
CD // £8.99

*Amazing debut collection of location recordings and drone works somewhere between The Caretaker and Thomas Köner, presented in a beautiful screen printed digipak* Fascinating debut release from Skjølbrot, aka Bristol’s Dan Bennett. ‘Maersk’ is a sort of spectral travelogue using field recordings from various locations together with electronics, vocals and cloaked instrumentation to create a deeply engrossing and peculiar sound world of disparate textural juxtapositions. The seven songs are based around specific locations or events, each designated in the track’s title. For example, the first track ‘Rue Victor Masse to Gare d’Austerlitz’ refers to Iannis Xennakis’ time in Paris during the ’61 Algerian massacre, and uses field recordings of streets and metro woven with plaintive piano and spatially dynamic electronics to evoke a strange sense of energies colliding, almost attempting to capture the resonance of their aftermath. Later, ‘Migrated’ conflates the imagery of birds, from the impact of a bird strike on the Bibliotheque Nationale to Senegal Parrot recorded in Bristol’s Victoria park, using their half-erased field recordings and nature to lend a trace of environmental sensitivity over his chilling drones. There’s also a certain preoccupation with container ships, not least in the album’s title, but clearly in ‘Shipbreaking’ which references the Unimask Pass in Alaska in an austere piece of creaking, deeply tormented electro-acoustic scenery, and ‘Idle Fleet’, filtering maritime VHF radio signals with the “…resonance of demolition equipment impacting on shipbuilding shed in Plymouth” and the imagery of hundreds of idle container ships in Singapore, eliciting majestic Ballardian imagery. This feel for traversing time and space is never more literally vivid than ‘Ballad Of Windfarming’, putting an Alan Lomax recording of a Scottish folk standard ‘Braighe Loch Iall’ to suspenseful use against the sound of supermarket refrigeration units and a wind farm at Whitelee, the largest onshore wind farm in Europe. Together, the subtle execution of , the eroded grid references, and the handmade execution add up to something far beyond the sum of its parts.

DATE PALMS
Of Psalms
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
Root Strata
LP // £14.99

“Of Psalms” is the fabulous Root Strata debut of Date Palms, set up by Marielle Jakobsons and Gregg Kowalsky (author of such fine releases as Kranky outing Tape Chants). The label very aptly describes the release as “a suite of slowed-down music of the spheres, with a canopy of glowing fog and a heavy narcotic bass pulse that keeps the whole thing rooted straight into the earth.” The album certainly introduces itself in regal style, sinking into a deep, low-end haze with ‘Psalm 7’, a kind of minimalist raga full of bowed strings and commanding bass routines. In addition to some of the more expected experimental reference points, you might be reminded of hazy loveliness of the earliest Air releases, or indeed the latest material from The Alps. Over the course of the record, violins, electric piano, harp and tape treatments all convene to shape a drone record that feels utterly organic and more purposeful – more thoughtfully composed than most. Both musicians are steeped in the more academic side of the contemporary music scene, each having studied Electronic Music courses at Mills College, yet the very natural sounding, raw instrumental materials are unfettered by any heavy-handed post-processing or excessively cerebral theorising. You will, however, hear some great synthesizer sound designs running through a piece like ‘Psalm 4′, lining up alongside Noah Philips’ electric guitar screech, and the steady, modal oscillator meditations of ‘Psalm 3’ lay the foundations for a wonderfully full-bodied tonal landscape. This LP is limited to just 500 copies and comes very highly recommended.

Singles of the Week

JAMES BLAKE
Klavierwerke EP
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
R&S Records
12″ // £6.49

Capping a very special year for James Blake, R&S drop the highly anticipated ‘Klavierwerke’, his most refined and sombre transmission to date. While his previous 12″s were defined by their unstable and unique sense of soul, these tracks have a more esoteric, modern classical air to them, clearly reflected in the monotone artwork and centre labels. It’s like chamber music for the post-dubstep crowd, utilising lofty meditations on the techniques and feelings gleaned from the style, distilling their essence from a removed and considered standpoint. The title piece feels torn between wanting to be there, in the dance, and longing to be somewhere else entirely, sequestered in dancefloor solipsism, shutting out surroundings until rhythms are worn down to the faintest flickers of filtered drums creating a richly woven blanket in which to hide oneself from the world. ‘Tell Her safe’ is a little more optimistic, focussed on Blake’s innate rhythmic intricacies and soul-burning chords, while ‘I Only Known (What I Known Now)’ slips back into that rarified sense of autumnal English melancholy, dappled with watery piano keys and deploying moments of reflective silence to stunning effect. Redressing the balance ‘Don’t You Think I Do’ offers a spurt of tormented internal funk, making a brief but lasting closing statement. Held up against everyone else out there right now, this record is just essential.

VAINQUEUR
Ranges
BASIC CHANNEL / DUB TECHNO
SCION VERSIONS
12″ // £5.99

Superb return from original Chain Reaction figure and all round techno legend, Vainqueur aka René Löwe. ‘Range’ is his first solo 12″ in over 13 years and is worth the wait, following a string of Scion Version productions with DJ Pete and a sublime remix for Basic Channel’s ‘See Mi Yah’ series. ‘Range-Expanded’ is the more driving, dancefloor friendly of the two tracks, crafted with lissom licks of effervescent dub chords and grandly spaciously atmospheres over an elegantly motorik dub bass. This is a true masterclass in the subtleties of refined, hypnotic arrangements with a pedigree perception of space and time in the most classic sense of dub and techno music. On the flip ‘Ranges – Theme’ alters our perception of space with a retuned reverb setting, opening the dub chord shapes into wispier tendrils of static ephemera dissipating to the peripheries while the bass holds a leaner steppers pattern. These tracks aren’t about walloping bass weight, they’re about firm, supple pressure and rich dub principles which have been lost in translation over the last decade. Highly recommended!

ELGATO
Tonight / Blue
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
HESSLE AUDIO
12″ // £5.99

Hypnotic swingers from the revered DJ and now producer, Elgato, making his debut on the equally esteemed Hessle Audio. Ask almost anyone who’s been tracking this underground UK thing for the last decade and they’ll have come across an amazing Elgato DJ set, crossing from Grime to Techno and all points in between with consummate style. Essentially these tracks sound like a distillation of all those mixes; the mesmerizing flow of ‘Tonight’ incorporates dubstep subbass intensity with fluid percussive programming, aligning patterns from Garage, Hardcore and House for an inescapably locked-in groove, recalling everyone from LD to Scuba and Bok Bok in mongrel style. On the flip, ‘Blue’ is aimed squarely at the Funky/House nexus, rolling out devastating subbass pressure under typewriter rhythms with squashed R’n’B vocals and hovering strings maintaining a sublime tension. To be totally honest, we’ve not heard anything quite like this from the scene yet and it’s going to be getting a lot of plays round these ways. Fans of Narcossist, Ramadanman, and the deeper ends of Doc Daneeka and co need this!

ROSKA & UNTOLD
Myth
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
NUMBERS
12″ // £5.99

Yes bwoyee!!! The most anticipated and overdue collaboration of the year finally lands on Numbers, pitting two titans of the UKs bass music rhizome in an advanced Funky masterclass. Both cuts have been circulating in the hands of scene heavyweights like Ben UFO and Jackmaster for some time, but now us proles on the (dance)floor can get a taste of the action! Starting the party, ‘Myth’ is some rinsably exotic beast, laying a wickedly whining Saz-like motif over drum patterns kinkier than yer ma’s Anne Summers parties, and backed with descending bass riffs dropped from the very top deck. ‘Long Range’ is a slinkier groover, heating puckered organ stabs amidst a humid riddim bustling between crisp congas, slippery wet splashes of claps and cone-pumping bass hits. We could chow down on this all night. Highly recommended to anyone with an ounce of bounce in their bones!

UNTOLD
Come Follow Me
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Soul Jazz
12″ // £3.99

Complementing the ‘Future Bass’ album, Untold drops ‘Fly Girls’ backed with the deadly exclusive ‘Come Follow Me’. While ‘Fly Girls’ squarely caters for the party end of the night, ‘Come Follow Me’ is where Untold really cuts loose in his ultra-contained style, reducing the twystin’ essence of hardcore jungle to calligraphic flourishes of liquid metal syncopations and economically dry, stoic atmospherics, no bruk-out business but one for the ruffneck steppers. Tip-f**king-Top! Recommended!

DUCKTAILS / KOHN / VARIOUS
Lune Atroce / Soleil Amer
ELECTRONIC
(K-RAA-K)3
7″ // £5.99

Essential 4-way split 7″ nugget from Belgium’s Kraak label, including a ruff diamond from Ducktails and a screenprinted fold-out insert. Köhn make a dramatic opening statement with the cryptically titled ‘U C I M’, recalling the work of Vangelis, Carpenter and a whole host of cinematic synth scores, while Alien Radio take a bloopier, ’60s style Radiophonic route with richly pure analogue results. These tracks contrast quite sharply with the Velvets-meet-Forest Swords sound of Peaking Lights’ ‘Creatures Of Day Creatures At Night’, and a dash of H-Pop magic in Ducktails ‘Sprinter’. We reckon fans of the Atelier Ciseaux or Captured tracks output of late will be very impressed with this record – limited copies only.

REGIS / FEMALE / REALITY OR NOTHING
Mixes
TECHNO / HOUSE
RSB
12″ // £6.49

Reality Or Nothing is a moniker used by Karl O’Connor (Regis) and Peter Sutton (Female) for a series of releases between ’96-’98 on Housewerk records. They’ve revived the alias for some seriously prime reworks in 2010, one each, exploring the deepest strains of rhythmically sensual and darkly sublime techno. Female’s remix on the A-side is simply one of his best in years, and coming from some of his biggest fans, we hope you know what that means! On the flip, Regis’s Kalon 08 Sandwell mix spikes the groove with a tightly syncopated Latin dynamic and deliciously brooding synth pads, while the original ’98 mix shows just how far ahead of the game these two Brummies have always been. ESSENTIAL techno!!!

REGIS / FEMALE / REALITY OR NOTHING
Sandwell District Mixes
TECHNO / HOUSE
RSB
12″ // £6.49

Regis and Female task their Sandwell District boys (CH Signal, Function, Silent Servant) with remix detail on their Reality Or Nothing tracks from 1998. He might not put much out, but CH Signal always delivers hi-strength goods and his deeply submerged throbber is no exception. On the flip, Function’s mix is subject to some crafty LFO treatment, making the bass pound like a Richie Hawtin’s finest while icy-numb hi-hats shudder in the upper echelons, preparing the ground for an ultra-efficient stomper from Silent Servant. No f*cking about, these are serious tracks. Techno heads – do not sleep on this 12″!!

The seven songs are based…

Tim Hecker’s ‘Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again’ was the Montreal artist’s first album under his own name (he’d previously released under the moniker, Jetone) and very much sets the blueprint for what was to come over ensuing full-lengths. In the early days of his career, Hecker was often compared with Fennesz, and indeed, much of this comes from the music on Haunt Me, which plumbs a similarly beautiful…

Another sublime drone album from the unshakably good Root Strata camp, En’s The Absent Coast is a real upper tier ambient release. Distinguished by its depth and effortless musicality, this album is one for genre fans to really savour. After the sandblasting noise/tonal onslaught of ‘A Dying Sun/Return To Holyoke’, the album calibrates itself to a stately simmer that comes to life during the quite sublime ‘Honeysuckle Heart’, which combines…

DFA present a brilliant anthology of Peter Gordon and His Love Life Orchestra. Folks outside of the disco cognoscenti may know his name from LCD Soundystem’s Fabric 36 mix, which they opened and closed with his ‘Beginning Of The Heartbreak/Don’t Care’ single from 1979. Since the mid-late ’70s Peter Gordon and His Love Of life Orchestra have played a pivotal role in the development of the studio-as-instrument and the general…

Classic 1970s Motown girl group sounds from The Sisters Love, famously championed by Danny Krivit. “As the ’70s dawned and Motown relocated to the West Coast, the era of their honey-toned ’60s girl groups came to a resounding halt. The Sisters Love were the antithesis of the traditional Motown group and came to the label from A&M, armed with a lot of funk, sass and attitude. Paired with some of…

JAMES BLAKE
Klavierwerke EP

It’s like chamber music for the post-dubstep crowd, utilising lofty meditations on the techniques…

On his longest solo EP to date, Blake delivers the anthemic title track backed with three uncategorisable steppers functions. ‘CYMK’ is also the most upbeat cut we’ve heard from him, swinging around a 140bpm axis with pandrogynously pitched R’n’B vocals, skunk-hazed depth perceptions and a sense of barely tethered spatial chaos owing to his advanced programming skills. ‘Footnotes’…

Desto and Tes La Rok give a taste of the Finnish ghetto sound with two heavyweight halfsteppers for Noppa. Desto’s ‘Ice Cold’ is the one here, a bulky slab of frayed Rustie-style HipHop/Dubstep fusion with screwed vocals and super smart syncopations. Trust us, this is deadly! On the flip Tes La Rok does his leaden halfstep flex on ‘Tricky Ting’, built for the slow skankers. Comes housed in a dope…

It’s been simply impossible to ignore this guy’s releases this year; witnessing his metamorphosis into a House music futurist has been an absolute pleasure to witness. This time out he gives the haughty thrust of ‘Liebe Suende’ on the A-side, where it’s all about the kinked kick drums and chopped R’n’B samples, kinda like…
ARKIST AND KOMONAZMUK

Komanazmuk links with fellow Bristol figure Arkist for two limber dancefloor cuts. Together, they offer ‘Outbreak’, a Zomby-ish bleepy roller with oodles of swagger and technoid chords. Arkist goes alone on the flip with ‘Until Next Time’, an agile Broken Beat rinse with tightly tucked syncopations for fans of Al Tourettes or Bugz In The Attic.

Like the last 12″, this is limited to 150 x 1-sided, hand-stamped copies, and explores the same nether regions of advanced halfstep D’n’B/Electronica. Essentially they’ve reduced D&B to the most fundamental aspects of tactile bass physics and rhythmic reference points, dispensing with any unnecessary body mass to present one…

For the remix session he’s roped in the very capable Throwing Snow, fresh off the back of his wicked 12″ for Ho Tep, and talented Dutch producer, Glitterbug. The original is one of the album’s most dancefloor-sharpened romps, a lushed-out moireé of Axel Willner-style repetition and soft techno tropes, which Throwing Snow…

Peverelist is in deep and meditaional form on ‘Strictly Ital’, putting Ras Adam’s dread drawl to great use over sumptuous subs and a sparingly used late ’80s digital-style riff. His awareness of space, vibe and drive is just so on the money here! On the flip Guido takes an more modern approach to ‘Nyah Keith’, reworking the…

Put simply, it’s a massive club tune, built with exothermic techno stabs, restless garage syncopations and a blustery bassline designed to put…
FRISCO

CD // £8.99

Frisco presents his new mixtape ‘Fully Grown’, feat guest spots from Bitty McLean and production from Mr. Woooo Riddim, S-X. The vibe is largely on a blinged R’n’B style, crisp 808s running with gleaming synthlines, especially on the grimey rap cut ‘Training Day’ produced by S-X, and on a sweetened sing-a-long vibe with Bitty McLean on ‘Bringing It Home’.

Pretty Psycho / Anxiety Square
ARKESTRA DISCOS
10″ // £7.99

Arkestra follow that intriguing BFlecha 10″ at the start of 2010 with two tracks of proggy, synth-driven dubstep funk. ‘Anxiety Square’ hits a canny style somewhere between the rolling R’n’B swagger of Joker and the more electronic-frayed end of the Beat Dimensions sound, say Dorian Concept or Low Limit. On the flip ‘Pretty Psycho’ is a big ol’ halfstep raver with hyper-diva vocals and that juicy road-level flavour of the…

Hats off to King Cannibal on the ‘Super Mantis remix, managing to turn an already rabid cut into a hellish hardcore nightmare of epic proportions. And same to Wee DJs on the ‘Gravel Bed’ version, injecting it with some Scottish swagger and placing it in a dread techno battlezone, ready…

DOLPHINS INTO THE FUTURE
KE ALA KE KUA
(K-RAA-K)3
LP // £10.99

Dolphins Into The Future is the alter ego of Lieven Martens, a hugely intriguing character at the core of the whole kosmische/knew-age synth revival. From his base (presumably) in a floatation tank somewhere in Antwerp, Belgium, he runs the Cetacean Nation Cassettes and Dreamtime Taped sounds labels, home to tape releases from James Ferraro, Uton and Oneohtrix Point Never among others, and a tonne of his own virtual soundscaping experiments….

You’ll still find some gorgeously submerged songwriting hidden away on here – particularly the reverb-corroded tones…

These tracks contrast quite sharply with the…

Second release from M=Minimal Records is an unearthed gem previously only available in Brazil, following the label’s issue of a privately pressed Conrad Schnitzler wonder. It’s quite fair to say that in 1984 there weren’t many albums that sounded like Chico Mello’s ‘Água’ in the field of minimal music. It combines elements of Chico’s Brazilian heritage with rooted minimalist principles gleaned from his time studying in Berlin under Dieter Schnebel…

VLADISLAV DELAY AS SISTOL
On The Bright Side
Halo Cyan Records
CD // £12.99

Vladislav Delay engages with his old Sistol alias for eight tracks of ruffed-up technohouse electronics on Phthalo’s new sub-label. These productions are decidedly more ragged and sweaty than any of his recent projects, from Luomo to the MvO Trio, perhaps exorcising some of his ruder dancefloor gremlins. In ‘(Permission To) Avalanche’ he rewires thudding techno with a squirming surface of electroid noise, while the title track gives a raw-edged slab…

YARD REC
CD // £14.49

Swedish techno star Anders Ilar returns with a new long-player for the Yard imprint, boasting six new productions, two remixes and one (sort of) hidden, untitled track. ‘Carving Wooden Hearts’ is a great opener – a midtempo affair, buckling under its own weight with flecks of distortion spilling out from the mix. As tends to be the case with Ilar’s work there’s an absorbingly melodic aspect that really holds the…

Imager is the solo debut from Tecumseh’s John Krausbauer, and takes the form of a startlingly powerful, utterly single minded, purist drone exercise. Across two quarter-hour-plus pieces Krausbauer concocts gliding, shimmering oscillations that exhibit a strict, steely perfection. Overtones and subtly modulating details keep these monolithic compositions in a state of flux and the end result is something that’s more of a physical interaction than a conventional listening experience. Winter’s Day is the new collaborative guise of sometime Kranky artist (and ex-Jessamine member) Dawn Smithson and Aaron Martin.  The combination of Martin’s mournful cello with Smithson’s fractured acoustics and smoky, ethereal vocal tone makes for a thing of considerable beauty.  ‘Tethered And Rootbound’ is a lush, slow-moving autumnal ballad that holds together in a loose and soulful fashion.  To make music that sounds this gracefully world-weary and spectral is…

THE CORIN TUCKER BAND

Kill Rock Stars

Just over four years on and Panda & Angel return with some new material; a 7″ released through indie-rock institution Too Pure. Arriving on blue vinyl in a hand-numbered edition of 500 copies, this double A-sided release serves as a perfect reminder of what made the band stand out back in…

LTM
CD // £8.99

Thanks to a steady reissue policy, LTM Recordings have kept the work of Blurt in circulation over recent years; helping sustain the legacy of this most peculiar of Factory-associated Mancunian bands. Cut It is the first new studio album from the band for thirteen years, marking the welcome return of sax-toting poet-frontman Ted Milton. Sounding every bit as demented and inventive as on their reissues, Blurt mangle breakneck rhythms with…

CD // £6.99

Following up their ace 7″ ‘Peppermint’, up-and-coming Yorkshire-based indie stars Spectrals deliver a seven-song mini album for Moshi Moshi, having previously cropped up on such fine imprints as Captured Tracks and Slumberland. Both tracks from that 7″ are included on this set, which gives a pretty full account of mainman Louis Jones’ classic pop know-how. The band takes its name from Phil Spector but is equally in the debt of…

WOODSIST
LP // £14.99

San Francisco band Royal Baths are the latest garage rock troupe out of the Woodsist camp, releasing a debut album coated in gloomy, cellar-dwelling fuzz and hollowed out ‘verb. As with all the finer bands of this ilk, Royal Baths are substantially more than the sum of their fashionable production traits: ‘After Death’ has a clear Velvet Underground-indebted darkness about it which carries over into the equally addictive ‘Nikki Don’t’…

12″ // £5.99

‘Tuff Enuff?’. Not really, but the first single lifted off Sh*t Robot’s ‘From The Cradle To the Rave’ does hit a very nice seam of early ’80s wavey synth vibes, ‘In homage to Chicago House, Kraftwerk and gay electronic disco’ with supple analogue synths and an effortless mid-tempo pace. On the flip Wild Geese give a tougher, late night version of ‘I Found Love’.

Two deep and deadly jack sojourns from Echospace’s Steve Hitchell and Chicago stalwart Josh Werner! They’ve found a terrifically mean streak of form with this 12″, dropping the heat-seeking jack of ‘Fractal Rip’ on the A-side, built with chewed-up 303 bass gurgles and ruff-cut machine rhythms to help even the most uncoordinated warehouse dweller find their perk. On the flip they offer a harrowing ‘Preludes & Nocturnes’ version of ‘Introspective’…

All The Engines
Antennae
12″ // £8.99

Something a bit different from Echospace’s Steve Hitchell, in collaboration with noted associate of DJ Sneak, Josh Werner. These two Chicago cats dig deep into their city’s history for two raw and bumpy riders. A-side cut ‘All The Engines’ jacks off spiky 808 drum machine patterns with a proper old-skool bassline, we’re talking Chip E ’85 styles, while the ‘Sleazy Turbine Mixx’ slips into something a little more comfortable for…

SUBB-AN & SHELTON
It’s Time
ONE RECORDS
12″ // £5.99

**Translucent Red Vinyl** Well polished Tech-House from Subb-an & Adam Shelton, backed with remixes from Jozif and Death On The Balcony for Birmingham’s One Records. Expect a plump roller in their original, and flip over for Jozif’s slower, funkier rework and a precise but trippy after-hours mix from Death On The Balcony. On red vinyl.
N DUNTON
Journeys To The Deep Vol. 1
SURFACE
12″ // £6.49

**CLEAR VINYL** Nick Dunton is best known as half of UK techno stalwarts 65D Mavericks. Following the untimely death of 65D’s Richard Polson he carries their spirit on in style with two tracks of the deepest, moodiest techno. ‘Oikumene (65000 Leagues Mix)’ structures majestically stormy, grey skied chords over throbbing aquatic pulses comparable to Monolake or recent Sandwell District moves, while ‘Echoes From The Deep (Submersion Mix)’ is a more…
ANTHONY COLLINS / NINA KRAVIZ
Nina Kraviz & Los Updates Remixes
Curle Recordings
10″ // £7.99

**Yellow Vinyl** Really strong reworks of Anthony Collins by Nina Kraviz and Los Updates for Curle’s bijou Métisse sub label, limited to 300 yellow vinyls! Nina’s version of ‘Another Lonely Night’ is quite the winner, built with slinky jacking ’80s drums and her characteristic quirks. On the flip, Ricardo Villalobos’s regular spar, Jorge Gonzales aka Los Updates gives another very solid remix. Check this!
HARMONIOUS THELONIOUS
Talking
Italic
CD // £10.49

Harmonious Thelonious is an alter ego of the prolific Stefan Schwander aka Antonelli Electr, Rhythm Maker and Repeat Orchestra. Following two under-the-radar 12″s for Dreck and Diskant he’s bloomed his Afro-infatuated Harmonious Thelonious project into a full blown album, brimming with dense and noisy electro textures and sumptuous rhythmic syncopation. It essentially imagines what Konono No.1 could sound like if they were a studio project from Düsseldorf, borrowing heavily from…
TAZZ
The World Of Techno EP
Underground Quality
12″ // £8.99

**Purple Marbled Vinyl** Like it says on the tin, UQ’s latest mission is a 4-track Techno tilt steered by the man like Tazz. He’s going on deep with these cuts, from the synths-driven steamer ‘Unrestrained’ into the slinky Latin shuffle of ‘Lost’ on the A-side, through to the string-heavy C2-style drama of ‘Mental Institution’ and the glorious strings of ‘World Of Techno’ on the flip. Of course it’s all executed…

Township Funk
New State
CD // £7.99

This is the first commercially released mixtape of South African House, or Kwaito, available in the UK. Selected and belnded by DJ Qness, it features the now-ubiquitous but still brilliant Mujava track with which it shares it’s title, plus the hugely sought after ‘Casablanca’ by MZO Bullet, next to proper heaters from Aero Manyelo, Mogrigo, McLloyd and a tonne of names we’ve never seen before. For most it’s a portal…
