Hello,

Pete Swanson of the now defunct Yellow Swans leads the charge this week with a prime slab of diverse aural carnage. Making a slight move sideways from his former band, Swanson stokes a furnace blast of guitar feedback and dissonance with his innate ability to always draw you towards the melodic core burning away at the heart of it all. It looks and sound bloody great and is limited to 300 copies only…

Hype Williams are a duo who continue to fascinate with a squashed and layered aesthetic that takes influence from the chopped and screwed scene on the one end, and Hypnagogic disco at the other, this week delivering a limited 3-track 7″ that starts with a dysfunctional Drake regurgitation and ends with an incredibly skewed cover of Sade’s ‘The Sweetest Taboo’ in a manner that would make Nite Jewel weep with envy. Again, strictly limited copies on this one….!

The latest addition to the Type roster is acclaimed avant-garde percussionist Jon Mueller. ‘The Whole’ is a career-defining moment, delving into Quaker and folk traditions to craft a beguiling album of intricate complexities using unconventional instrumentation in a very broad minded sense. His work with Bon Iver side project Volcano Choir and for the Table Of Element label especially provides some context, but this really is one of the more unusual and un-categorisable releases on the label in a while and sounds like little else we’ve heard before – quite an achievement in itself. Initial copies come with a bonus 30 minute CD album so get in fast…

Soul Jazz follow their Boxes Of Dub with ‘Future Bass’, ramming in 13 new and exclusive tracks on CD and 3×12″s for the forward looking dancefloors, including tracks from Mala to Four Tet, Untold and Kevin Martin, plus many more. They’ve created a new framework where the psyched and sloth-like dub of Black Chow can fit on the same page as hi-tek rollers from LD and crushed electroid halfstep outta Bristol, showing many sides of the same dazzling prism. A big look!

Following in quick succession from the momentous Keith Fullerton Whitman album that reached us last week, Trevor Wishart’s instalment for Pan Records is a must for lovers of archival electronic/tape work and improvised electro-acoustic composition. It features three tracks never released before on vinyl, two from 1976, pre-computer, and another stupendous work from 2002 full of incredibly dynamic sound. Awesome packaging and sounds = a must.

Rune Grammofon return this week with a special Vinyl+CD pack from Alog’s Espen Sommer Eide aka Phonophani. With some help from David Grubbs among others, ‘Kreken’ investigates a highly esoteric blend of Norwegian folk, abstract electro-acoustics and tangled jazz, complete with 25 minutes of bonus material on the 10″ exclusive to this edition.

Ahead of the much anticipated Ducktails album, Matthew Mondanile and his buddy Dracula Lewis take it out there on two diverse and extended synth trips. The Ducktails side drops the pop structures to go on an inward trajectory aboard his dinky Casio Mt-100, distinctly reminding of Skaters or Gavin Russom in the process. Dracula Lewis is a stranger, unquantified proposition, cinematic, in the scuzziest sense of the word, and strange in the best way.

If you’ve picked up the latest edition of The Wire magazine you may well have read about the fascinating Entr’acte label, and boy oh boy have they been a joy to discover. Despite being in existence for the best part of a decade we’ve only just dipped into their catalogue and have been completely blown away by the musical, aesthetic and production values they invest in their catalogue. Each and every release is beautifully packaged and custom made, often in vacuum packed bags that have been screen printed by the label itself. Most importantly, the breadth and depth of the material is just jawdropping, offering some of the finest modern electronic and experimental music we’ve picked up this year. We have a good selection of releases available now – make sure to dip in.

On a dancefloor tip, we just got a handful of the heart-melting Burial refit of Commix on one-sided, lazer-etched vinyl (act fast!!!), while DVA gives Cooly G a tidy rerub for his DVA Music label, backed with a nice ‘n refined remix of his ‘Jellyroll’ anthem. Both are essential Funky heaters.

Other highlights this week feature from P.Jorgensen (accompanied by Peter Broderick and a whole host of stellar remixers), Fever Ray, the amazing Philip Cohran, a limited edition tape from Richard Ingram, the return of Harvey’s Locussolus project, a compilation on the Lost Tribe Sound label featuring The Remote Viewer, Aaron Martin, Helios etc, plus releases from Terror Danjah, Sublime Frequencies Deerhunter, Mice Parade, Hatikvah, Matias Aguayo, Dmx Krew and two releases on the Rephlex label.

Have yourselves a fabulous week…

Peace! Nekkers…xx

Albums of the Week

PETE SWANSON (YELLOW SWANS)
Feelings In America
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
Root Strata
LP // £12.99

*Strictly limited vinyl edition of 300 copies for the world* Another prime slab of immersive and utterly compelling auricular carnage from Pete Swanson, who follows up his recently self-released private press LPs (the solo collection Where I Was and the Rene Hell collaboration Waiting For The Ladies) with a new album for Root Strata. With no small amount of self-deprecation (and strange usage of third-person) Swanson describes this three-piece album as sounding “exactly like his old band, but funnier in a depressing sort of way.” While it’s certanly true that the loose threads of Yellow Swans’ music run through Feelings In America, this album represents another key development in Swanson’s solo discography. ‘The Fermata’ starts in a ponderous, precariously beautiful fashion as Swanson navigates his way through delicate guitar lines, relatively unfettered by his usual bombardment of effects detail. All that is (of course) set to change and before long Swanson stokes the furnace, giving rise to a trebly onlsaught of basement noise vapours. If you spend long enough squaring up to the distortion you might just make out bits of vocals and brassy melodic meanderings somewhere within all that clamour; as ever the sheer breadth of the sound emanating from Swanson’s vituperative guitars is startling. With your ears well and truly rinsed out, you can then flip over to a more sedate second side opener, ‘F.I.A.’, which seems to hover between feedback patterns and murmuring pickup scuzz, channelled through groaning, mould-lined reverb chambers. After this comes the wonderful ‘Believers’ which grasps onto a soaring, repeating guitar melody around which flecks of noise and lo-fi modulation build up a vividly turbulent soundscape. For all its feedback and predisposition towards spiny dissonance there’s something optimistic and uplifting about this last piece and it rounds the LP off on a real high. Very highly recommended.

JON MUELLER
The Whole (Limited Vinyl Edition)
ELECTRONIC
Type
LP+CD // £11.99

*Initial copies come with a bonus 30+ minute CD album featuring exclusive material..Limited copies!* In addition to being one of America’s most persistently interesting avant-garde percussionists, Jon Mueller has in recent years carved a niche for himself among more mainstream company, working with Collections Of Colonies Of Bees, and perhaps most notably of all, Volcano Choir, the acclaimed Bon Iver-related side-project that features Justin Vernon. One way or another, Type Records seems to have made a habit of capturing established experimental artists at a career-defining moment or a point of creative breakthrough (something that could be argued for the label’s releases of Grouper, Yellow Swans and Black To Comm albums) and once again, they seem to have snapped up Mueller just as he’s poised on the cusp of taking his music to a new peak. Having released Metals and Physical Changes for the Table Of The Elements label, The Whole finds Mueller looking outward; delving into the culture of quilt making and the Shaker crafts in his pursuit of forming his work around a fresh sense of earthy simplicity. Mueller’s palette is comprised of a relatively sparse set-up: a snare, low toms, hammered dulcimer and voice, yet with these constituent parts he forms a unique vision that’s equally enriched by folk traditions as it is the contemporary experimental music scene. ‘Hearts’ is an epic of intricate, clockwork drumming that combines with tranced-out vocal mantras and interjections of harmonised dulcimer to great effect, culminating in a thrilling final sequence that finds Mueller putting his own uniquely skewed slant on the double-time kick sounds of thrash metal. ‘Hands’ is another captivatingly complex and powerful drumming exercise, punctuated by deep cymbal splashes and some beautiful tom work through which you can really hear the full, booming curve of the drum’s vibration. The album is bookended by ‘Remembered As’ and ‘Remembered’ two pieces that place emphasis on the melodic potential of percussion, coaxing haunting passages from the dulcimer that really spring into life – particularly during the latter piece which embraces gong-like chimes and swelling metallic resonances.

VARIOUS / SOUL JAZZ
Future Bass
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Soul Jazz
CD // £10.99

Soul Jazz frame the UKs morphing rhizome of dubstep and technoid dancefloor operators under the ‘Future Bass’ tag for a heavyweight 3×12″ comp, featuring established producers such as Mala, Four Tet, Untold, and Coki, alongside relative youngers like Randomer, Distal and Harry Craze. It’s probably unfair, and incorrect, to lump all these artists under the catch-all Dubstep label nowadays so Future Bass fits the bill nicely, creating an even playing field where the Gamelan techno of Four Tet’s ‘Nothing To See’ can be aligned with the scrunched electroid halfstep of Ginz’s purple stinger ‘Boss’ and the anti-G ‘step of Black Chow (aka Kevin Martin and Hitomi from King Midas Sound). Our personal highlights would have to be the woozy compression of Black Chow’s ‘Air’, the tropical swing of Distal’s ‘Grape Donut’, and Harry Craze’s awesome Jungle twyster ‘Gone’, but thats not to discount certified ‘floor movers like Untold’s techy-houser ‘Fly Girls’, the rampant undulation of Ramadanman’s ‘Bass Drums’ or the fierce soca-tek shock of LD’s ‘Mastermind’. There’s enough to keep your window panes rattling for days here. Sling it on and get yourself a noise abatement notice, we dare ya!

TREVOR WISHART
Fanfare & Contrapunctus / Imago
ELECTRONIC
PAN
LP // £17.99

**Please be aware, this album is strictly limited, housed in custom printed outer-pvc with a design aesthetic worthy of the music contained within** After owning our ears with the Keith Fullerton Whitman album last week, Pan Records present a compelling trio of important recordings from visionary sound art composer, Trevor Wishart – available on vinyl for the first time. Since the mid ’70s Trevor has conducted “systematic research into various vocal-speech figures and the possibilities for their noting, giving special emphasis to the computer technologies”, publishing a number of books on the subject and related areas and collecting awards from numerous academic competitions and festivals. The two short pieces on the A-side, titled ‘Fanfare & Contrapunctus’ were recorded in 1976 at the newly opened electronic studio at the Sydney Conservatorium, prior to the advent of music computer technology. With source material derived from “…soft trumpets, pop-guns, French Horn and virtuoso eating noises plus recordings of birdsong and other environmental sources” he constructs wildly abstract free improvisations, with an acute sense of humour in the second piece of extended vocal techniques, we might add. ‘Imago’ on the other side, was recorded in 2002 and features the clink of two whiskey glasses morphed into a dazzling multitude of stereo shapes using the transformation software Composers Desktop Project. While the two earlier pieces are highly intriguing and occasionally daft, this one is visceral and dynamically chaotic, making for a stupendous listening experience. The subtitle of this piece ‘…the universe in a grain of sand…’ is incredibly apt.

PHONOPHANI
Kreken (Numbered Vinyl+CD Special Edition)
ELECTRONIC
Rune Grammofon
10″ Album + CD // £19.99

*Strictly limited special edition – limited to an individually numbered run of just 250 copies for the world in a customised package including a 10″ pressing featuring 25 minutes of exclusive material, plus the full CD album.* New from the Rune Grammofon camp comes album number four from electronica maverick Espen Sommer Eide – known for his work in Alog as much as for his solo output as Phonophani. On Kreken, Eide applies his talents as a programmer and sound engineer to the traditions and instruments of Norwegian folk music, dissecting the timbres and tuning systems with a little help from contributing artists David Grubbs, Haco, Jenny Hval, Sigbjorn Apeland and Agnethe Christensen. In addition to his skills as a producer and electronic artist, Eide ably applies his talents across a wide variety of instruments on Kreken, resulting in tangled, jazzy constructions such as the excellent ‘Vuku’ or more tangibly folky electroacoustic workouts (particularly ‘Kvaale Ii’ and the beautiful title track). The addition of vocals helps the record fconnect with folk song idioms, even if they do manifest themselves in the most esoteric of ways: ‘Mendel’ is a haunting, quite incredible piece of abstract music, and ‘Neverdal’ has the feel of a duet between Anne Briggs and an Oval record. Excellent stuff.

P. JORGENSEN / PETER BRODERICK / VARIOUS
Soundtrack Remix
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
Under The Spire
2CD // £10.99

You may recall a highly limited P Jørgensen “business card”-style 3″CD from a couple of months back. This was Under The Spire’s promotional item for this very fine double-album you now see before you; a soundtrack by Jørgensen for a documentary film titled Kim, about a Danish World War II resistance fighter. String contributions come courtesy of fellow soundtracker, Peter Broderick, who also lines up on the bonus remix disc with other big names like Greg Davis, Jasper TX, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Seasons (Pre-Din), Rameses III and Machinefabriek. Jørgensen’s hour long score for the film is an impressive feat, pooling together a wide selection of compositions that takes in neo-classical styled piano and string pieces as well as more abstract concrète and drone works. On the one hand, ‘Hanne & Kim’, ‘Til Canada’ and ‘Palimpsest (For Strings)’ rub shoulders with the lyrical, Max Richter school of film scoring, but then Jørgensen goes and upsets all expectations by unleashing an incredible electronic soundscape like ‘Isvinter’. The likes of ‘Love (Radiomontage)’ and ‘Astoria’ prove to be especially outstanding as ambient drone-style entries, and the frozen-over ‘Luxembourg’ would be worthy of Stephan Mathieu. As a single-disc album, this would be a mightily strong release, but the remix disc makes it all the more essential. Kranky’s Chris Herbert puts in an outstanding entry with his panoramically detailed twelve-minuter, ‘Fissures’, while Peter Broderick extends and develops ‘Palimpsest (For Strings)’ adding wordless vocals to the equation. Combining elements of two different pieces, Jasper TX fashions an epic electroacoustic monolith with ‘Modstand/Til Canada’, while the customarily brilliant Greg Davis extends piano keyings off toward the horizon with the infinitesimally modulating drone opus ‘Light Breath’. An excellent double-album that’s certainly among the very best Under The Spire releases to date.

DUCKTAILS / DRACULA LEWIS
Split
ELECTRONIC
NO FUN
LP // £14.99

Long awaited and extended psychedelic trips from Ducktails and the enigmatic Dracula Lewis on a split LP for No Fun Productions. Using a typically pared-down array of Casio Mt-100, flanger and space echo, Ducktails takes himself on a bedroom trance-out to unknown internal galaxies, locked deep into his own groove and gradually unfolding into the blissful harmonic quadrants inhabited by Skaters or like Gavin Russom running low on batteries. O’er on the flip, we’ve never encountered Dracula Lewis before, but his ‘Gone By Dawn’ offers a wickedly awkward and cinematic introduction, giving a limp wristed hand shake while meeting your gaze with drained and pallid drones, all circled by a clattering of choughs in the night sky, crowing with a chilling ferric resonance. As usual, excellent stuff from No Fun – Highly recommended and strictly limited.

Singles of the Week

HYPE WILLIAMS
Do Roids & Kill E’rything
BEATS / DOWNTEMPO / BOOGIE
NO LABEL
7″ // £5.49

Awesome new three-track 7″ from the fascinating Hype Williams, a girl/boy flopped & screwed-as-f*ck unit operating out of London/Berlin. ‘Do Roids And Kill E’rything’ is their fourth single ahead of a hotly touted release for Hippos In Tanks sometime in the future. On the A-side ‘Ooovrrr’ dissolves Drake’s vocals into a crack-throated gloop over gunky, lo-fi screw beats while warbling, palid synths hover in the background. ‘Rescue Dawn’ follows, a sludgy scrape of boxed vocals, disgustingly slow bassline and murkily optimistic synth chords. The flipside is a cover of Sade’s ‘The Sweetest Taboo’, as you’ve never heard it before, refracted through a misty maze of ferric chaff with humming subbass pressure and a deliciously vague and smacked out nonchalance. Like the Salem album, also out this week, this is a disturbing take on pop culture with an uncanny awareness of lo-fi aesthetics and techniques that’s just blowing our crooked boxes right now. Highly limited (500 copies only), and hugely recommended to fans of James Ferraro, Nite Jewel, DJ Screw or Games.

COMMIX / BURIAL
Be True (Burial Mix)
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
METALHEADZ
12″ // £5.99

Finally!!! The looooong awaited Burial remix of Commix lands on vinyl! We really don’t need to tell you how special this record is; it’s one of Burial’s finest moments, cut to a one-sided, lazer-etched 12″, on Metalheadz. Seriously, read that sentence back again, then click the buy button before it’s too late.

JOHN CARPENTER / FRONT 242 / VARIOUS
Bustin’ Out 1983: New Wave To New Beat Volume 3 Sampler
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
Year Zero
12″ // £5.49

Accompanying vol.3 of the cherry-picked ‘New Wave To New Beat’ series, a very tasty 12″ sampler featuring tracks from Anne Clark, Front 242, Special Request and John Carpenter. We get classic EBM from Front 242 on ‘Take One’, next to Anne Clark’s dystopian city vista ‘Sleeper In Metropolis’ on the A-side. Thte flip contains a very rare 12″ pressing of Special Request’s seminal ‘Salsa Smurf’, and the essential dancefloor cut of John Carpenter’s The End (Sound Version)’ out of the Escape From New York OST. Absolutely indispensable and very limited wares.

COOLY G / SCRATCHA DVA
DIS Boy (L-Vis 1990 & Bok Bok Mix)
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
DVA MUSIC
12″ // £6.49

Big moves from DVA, dropping his own revision of Cooly G’s ‘Dis Boy’, backed with an L-Vis 1990 & Bok Bok remix of ‘Jelly Roll’, and an odd little grime original. With his Hi Emotions mix of ‘Dis Boy’ DVA takes the opportunity to go a bit deeper, slightly augmenting the feminine pressure of the original with a smoothly sophisticated and European-influenced House sound. On the flip L-Vis & Bok Bok also keep it refined, retooling the mad ass melody of ‘Jelly Roll’ with Bok Bok’s trademark drums and a laidback bassline roll. No need to break a sweat here. DVA’s cryptically titled ’32DA4′ rounds up on a screwball grime/dubstep fusion flex with his characteristically strange sense of melody. Big.

FEVER RAY
Mercy Street / Dry & Dusty
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
RABID
7″ // £4.99

Fever Ray’s acclaimed interpretation of Peter Gabriel’s ‘Mercy Street’ lands on a limited 7″ pressing, backed with the spine-chilling beauty of ‘Dry and Dusty’. Karin Dreijer Andersson puts her indelible stamp on the wistfully atmospheric original, giving it a fillip of energy with pulsing mid-tempo bass and sparkling electronic dynamics. On the flip is ‘Dry and Dusty’, one of many highlights from her self-titled solo album. Highly Recommended.

PHILIP COHRAN AND THE ARTISTIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE
The Zulu 45s Collection
JAZZ / RELATED
Jazzman
3 x 7″ // £14.99

Impeccably presented and absolutely crucial 3×7″ collection of foundational Afro-rooted jazz from the legendary Philip Cohran, an original member of Sun Ra’s Arkestra and a lauded progressive jazz legend. These three 7″s were privately pressed on Cohran’s own Zulu label, bearing that distinctive double X logo, around 1970. They form part of a miniscule clutch of Cohran records next to ‘On The Beach’ and ‘The Malcolm X Memorial’ which all emerged as a result of recording sessions with his Artistic Heritage Ensemble, inspired by their residency at the Affro-Arts centre, a hub for poetry, politics, dance and music housed in an old Chicago theatre. It was here that Cohran and his ensemble developed their complex, radical form of progressive jazz, with Philip utilising the potential of his Frankiphone, an adapted thumb piano akin to the likembe which allowed him to perfect a tuning system outside of the regular 12-tone scale, and an agenda to incorporate jazz and gospel with their inherent African heritage. These three 7″s capture the scene vividly, from the meditative spirituality of ‘Black Beauty’ to the sublime gospel of close associates The Spencer Jackson Family’s ‘Ain’t Nobody Gonna Treat Us Like They Used To Do’, or the rolling unity of ‘The African Look’. Jazzman have done a sterling job in making these recordings available for wider consumption, providing a privileged insight to one of Jazz music’s most precious quantities. **Records come in individual, printed inner sleeves, housed in full colour picture sleeve with in-depth sleeve notes**. A treasure!

Highly touted vocalist Ahu Kelesoglu heads up the latest One-Handed missive, produced by Paul White and remixed by the brilliant Dimlite. Her spectral vocals previously graced ‘Roberta Flack’ on Flylo’s ‘LA’, and have been warmly compared to a more soulful Trish Keenan. ‘To: Love’ does actually have a distinct Broadcast feel with woozy, theremin-like tones layered over the Paul White’s crafty beat chops. A hugely impressive and sonically engrossing acousmatic album from Helen Gough that’s certainly geared towards the more academically-grounded end of the electroacoustic music scene, Mikroklimata is another disc on the Entr’acte label that’s not to be missed. Latest excursion from Vienna’s Dubblestandart, bringing Anthony B, Elephant Man, Lee Scratch Perry, William S. Burroughs, and David Lynch for a wee smokey smoke. Firstly we should point out that it’s not big, and it’s not clever to smoke Marijuana, and besides, it’s a well known fact that regular smokers don’t tend to remember their dreams anyway! Expect 14 deep and hazy dub recollections, ranging from full vocal cuts like…

VARIOUS / SOUL JAZZ
Future Bass

It’s probably unfair, and incorrect, to lump all these artists under the catch-all Dubstep label nowadays so Future Bass fits the bill nicely, creating an even playing…

DIS Boy (L-Vis 1990 & Bok Bok Mix)

On the flip L-Vis & Bok…
MADDSLINKY FT. SKREAM
50 Shades Of Peng (Ltd Edition Serato Pressing)
TRU THOUGHTS
12″ // £13.99

**Yellow Vinyl – Serato Pressing!** Old skool master Maddslinky aka Zed Bias meets youthling phenomenon Skream on a KILLAH one-sided Serato special press. No halfstep business here, just proper groove technology from two leaders of their scene, sculpting forward garage steppers patterns with dread-tek bassline and uranium-enriched melody. The other side is a Serato scratch tone. Heavily limited yellow vinyl. Big Tip!
JUS WAN / DJG
Azure (F Remix) / Avoid The Noid (Headhunter Mix)
PUSHING RED
12″ // £6.49

Third plate from Pushing Red, dropping the finest Headhunter track in ages, backed with a standardly heavyweight F cut. Seriously, Headhunter’s remix of DJG’s ‘Avoid The Noid’ is one of the most deadly takes on the 4/4 dubstep-meets-techno style this year, arranging a gracefully muscular momentum with sub-driven kicks and a hovering synthline maintaining a glassy tension. It’s currently riding high on the playlists of 2562, Synkro and RSD and…
SILVERMAN / CLARK
Can’t Stand The Rain (Clark Mix)
One4Ho
12″ // £6.49

**SHIPS FRIDAY** From the outer limits of the planet (well, Berlin to be precise), two tracks of techno reinforced steppers backed with a stunning remix inversion from Clark! The lead cut is a bit of killer, precipitating the Ann Peebles sample – ‘Can’t Stand The Rain’ famously used by Missy Elliott – over cataclysmic technoid production, all pneumatic snares, restless kicks and noxious clouds of concrete atmospheric dust. Perhaps it…
XXXY
Every Step Forward EP
FORTIFIED AUDIO
12″ // £5.99

Continuing a run of exceptional form, XXXY drops four tracks of techy post-garage on Fortified Audio. The Manchester-based producer’s name has been everywhere this year and this 12″ should only serve to heighten his ubiquity. ‘This Much’ smoothly sails in with warm chords and precisely itchy garage patterns anchored with fluid subs while ‘Just For Me’ perches itself between gentle house motifs and more ragged rave signifiers atop bustling 2-step…
A1 BASSLINE VS KAVSRAVE / A1 BASSLINE VS TEK-ONE
Luckier Charms / Arrakis 97
TIGHTEN UP RECORDS
12″ // £5.99

Impressive debut drop from Tighten Up records, unleashing two collabs from A1 Bassline with Kavsrave and Tek-One. In conjunction with Numbers weapon, Kavsrave, ‘Luckier Charm’ piles out a bolshy stomper combining the 808-driven style of Swamp 81 and recent Ramadanman releases, with peaktime synthline surges to get ’em hitting the ceiling. ‘Arakis 97’ from A1 Bassline and Tek-One heads down the tunnel of tearout ‘step with ruffed up results. OPTIMUM
Max Power
Planet Mu
12″ // £4.99

Fresh from a remix of American Men with Ikonika, Optimum launches a debut solo attack with the screwy soca rush of ‘Max Power’. Images of lairy Essex boys in fluoro-green Cosworths aside, that title track is fierce, like a more vicious LD cut made for warehouse deployment. Following this, the gangster carousel of ‘Crash Riddim’ is equally narsty, a proper sh*tter’s riddim with an evil, demented glint in its eye…

BUTTERZ
12″ // £4.99

We find Terror Danjah in menacing form on ‘Creepy Crawler’, keeping it slow and swagger with bilious stabs and is signature gremlin kinks. Royal-T meanwhile follows his massive ‘1UP or Shatup’ EP with a minimal yet propulsive instrumental while SRC offers the highlight with the 8-Bit Mid-Eastern melodics of ‘Goomba VIP’ and Mr….

Revival EP
Well Rounded Records
12″ // £5.99

Four tracks of diverse future garage from hotly tipped Welsh production unit C.R.S.T., following their limited and sought after 10″ on Ten Thousand Yen and remix of The Count & Sinden’s ‘After Dark’. The range of garage styles may be attributable to the fact there are four members in the unit, yet they clearly retain a taste for the deep and sophisticated, yet party-wise end of the scene. ‘Feel You’…
KULTURE
Spooky
REDUCTION
12″ // £5.99

Kulture rolls on from his Disfigured Dubs transmissions with two atmospheric movers for Reduction. With ‘Spooky’ he unloads a Mala-esque roller driven by bottomless subs and infectious congas, and tinted with ethereal, theremin-alike synths. ‘Bittersweet’ is more minimal still, but nods to early Shackleton-style drum and bass arrangements with his own brand of sinister melodic character.
A-FORCE / EOMAC
Orere 3000 / Shufflesteppa
GHETTO QUIETLY
10″ // £4.99

Following their Prince Kong drop last year, Ghetto Quietly serve two diverse and leftfield riddims. A-Force is in control for ‘Orere 3000’, a lumber-jacking house cut with bold, bouncing toms and spacious sound design. Eomac’s ‘Shufflesteppa’ takes the flipside for a unique garage mission with corkscrewing 2-step rhythms in a very wonky, febrile arrangement. Heavy.
DESPOT
Rogue State / Concert
31 RECORDS
12″ // £5.99

Deep end minimalist D’n’B steppers from Despot on an increasingly in-form 31 Records. ‘Rogue State’ occupies the A-side with an icily efficient production of Photek-style tribal percussion and warmly cinematic synth pads executed with a restrained yet dramatic flourish. ‘Concert’ on the flip sits back into a more mellow groove, laden with blazing soul vocals in a fractured, glitchy rhythmic framework. A must for anyone following the Autonomic sound.
EDDIE K & MINUS
Serial Killa ft. Beezy / Starlight
HENCH
12″ // £5.99

H.E.N.C.H. come correct, heavyweight styles, with a gargantuan dubstep raver from Eddie K and Beezy. The bare-faced delivery of ‘Serial Killa’ is just undeniably effective, setting Beezy’s lyrics about a “blood-dripping hard-on” to the synthline equivalent of having ten grams of mephepdrone fluffed up yer spyhole by The Others – incredibly dirty but kinda fun in that every-now-and-again kinda way. For the nicer folks there’s also a stripped and forward-leaning…
PHAELEH
Afterglow (d-Bridge Mix)
AFTERGLOW
12″ // £5.99

d-Bridge steps up to remake ‘Afterglow’ as a dystopian D’n’B vista with crafty halfstep rhythm switches and rusty coloured clouds of synth atmosphere. Phaeleh’s original features a glistening, trancey vocal from Soundmouse floating over a piquant IDM-meets-dubstep composition.
PHAELEH
Afterglow (Akira Kiteshi Mix)
AFTERGLOW
12″ // £5.99

Akira Kiteshi gives Phaeleh a bittersweet rave remake on ‘Afterglow’, balancing the twinkling melody and tranced-out vocals with controlled tearout bass licks. With ‘Low’ Phaeleh cut a little deeper on a skeletal halfstep riddim loaded with swooping subs and prowling jungle atmospherics.
TES LA ROK
Ignition (VIP Mix) / Intanationalz
ARGON
12″ // £5.99

Tes La Rok returns on Argon with two dubstep heavyweights. ‘Ignition VIP’ is one for the halfstep heroes, all lurching, cavernous drums and grizzled toxic synthlines, but ‘Intanationalz’ is the a far stronger cut, reminding of D1 or LD with shak-out polyrhythms and stealth bombing synthlines designed to lay waste to dances everywhere. This one’s a bit rugged!
UNKNOWN / WAR
Fuss & Fight
WAR
12″ // £5.99

Limited white label styles from the War Dubs camp. Two laidback and rooted skankers, ‘Fuss & Fight’ deploys a sweet guitar lick over meditative halfstep with just a hint of wobble, whereas the flipside ‘Version For Version’ keeps it calm but gets well crafty on the mixing desk with flickering delay syncopations.

Lux Payllettes
ENTR’ACTE

Turntablist and concrète composer eRikm is one of the more readily recognisable names contributing to the revelatory Entr’acte label, and his disc Lux Payllettes is a typically excellent work. The fifth album from John Tejada and Takeshi Nishamoto’s duo, I’m Not A Gun, Solace feels like a pronounced refinement of their work to date on the project. 12″ // £6.99

Starting to sound like a Scottish version of The National, The Twilight Sad return with a new 12″ EP that includes two unreleased tracks and remixes from Errors and Mogwai. The strings and brooding drama of the title track hint at evermore epic things to come from the Twilight Sad camp, while ‘Throw Yourself Into The Water Again’ throws itself into an appealingly noisy stomp. Errors provide a little electro-rock…

MATIAS AGUAYO
Menta Latte Remixe (Prins Thomas Mix)
Kompakt
12″ // £5.99

Intoxicating disco winners from Matias Aguayo, bumped with a prime Prins Thomas remix! ‘Menta Latte’ will be instantly recognisable to many as the opening track from the crackishly addictive ‘Ay Ay Ay’, lending Prins Thomas some excellent source material in the form of synthetic bird trills, tipsy congas and all kinds of vocal onomatopoeia which he rubs into nine minutes of sticky space disco. Meanwhile, Vincente Sanfuentes (aka Original Hamster)…

Fine double header of dry pumping techno from Soma regular, Let’s Go Outside, and two of Glasgow’s finest techno producers, Alex Smoke and Edit Select. ‘The Retainer’ neatly consolidates the differing styles of Mssrs Smoke and Edit Select, keeping matters driving and linear, but offset with well placed percussive punctuation and spooked vocal interjections. On the flip Let’s Go Outside goes heads-down on ‘Valentino’ , powering forward with muscular kicks…

In the wake of his ace ‘The March Of The Stars’ for Legowelt’s Strange Life label, ‘Wave Funk’ follows his ‘Wave’ collection of a few years back, gathering one disc of brand new material and another compiling previously vinyl-only releases, 35 tracks in total. JODEY KENDRICK

Rephlex
12″ // £4.99

Ace six-tracker of classically-informed Rephlexian electronics from Jodey Kendrick. The fiends will surely have picked up on his ‘I.S.C’ 12″ last year, and most likely devoured his +10 back catalogue for Napalm Enema, so no need to go there now. Over the course of these six cuts Jodey undoubtedly sounds a lot like AFX’s ‘Analord’ series, but there’s a couple, like the pounding EBM cut that opens the B-side, and…

12″ // £4.99

Excellent 4-tracker from Rephlex, introducing a new name to their roster – David Barnard aka Monolith. Over the duration of Volume 1 he keeps impressively close to the Rephlex aesthetic while really bringing something unique to their table. With ‘F-Tron’ he gives a restless acid hyper-jacker with sumptuous harmonic idiosyncracies, while ‘Vigton 3Stun’ strikes a tender nerve of early rave soul with Aphexian breakbeats and lovely Detroit riffs. ‘Syphonic Flash’…
