Hello,

Demdike Stare close their 2nd cycle with a lavish triple-panel digifile 3CD box set (23 tracks/160 minutes long) featuring their last three albums (‘Forest of Evil’, ‘Liberation Through Hearing’ and ‘Voices of Dust’) including an extra 40 minutes of exclusive material. The pair of insatiable vinyl hunters, Sean Canty (Finders Keepers) and Miles Whittaker (DJ/shamen/half of Pendle Coven) have created a sprawling body of work defined by it’s lack of clear parameters other than exotic, obscure and long forgotten reference points. Collected in one package ‘Tryptych’ will immerse listeners in a disorientating alternate reality.

We’ve just taken stock of the 5CD collection of Popol Vuh scores for Werner Herzog films, and it’s an absolute beauty. Their divine music is inextricably linked with Herzog’s themes of humanity, religion and nature and has re-defined the art of the soundtrack. This box set is a tremendous testament to their accomplishments – we urge you to grab one while you can.

‘Thai! Dai?’ is an amazing collection of niche, mid ’70s Thai music tracked down and collated by the vinyl vultures at Finders Keepers. The first exotic taste of this sound arrived with that nutty Sroeng Santi cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘Iron Man’ last year and spills over into 14 tracks of convention rewiring and rare-as-f**k psych music that we can almost guarantee you’ve never heard before – but that you’ll no doubt fall in love with.

Former Scorn-collaborator Cezary Gapik’s ‘Contrast I’ is one of White Box’s most compelling releases to date. Alternately terrifying and reflective, it features one side of excoriating noise and another calmer, meditative tract of harmonic drone bliss. First 100 on red vinyl!!! Meanwhile, for devotees of Leyland Kirby, Stars Of The Lid or Philip Jeck we direct you to Black Swan’s enigmatic debut. ‘In 8 Movements’ has a beautifully measured grasp of heavy-breathing, gaseous ambient textures and half-lit sampledelia with that all-important creepiness that just can’t be shaken.

Pauline Oliveros, George Marsh & Jennifer Wilsey Marsh’s free-improvisations as Timeless Pulse receive due recognition with a lovingly assembled LP for Taiga Records – their first vinyl release. ‘Trio’ features sumptuous studio recordings made during one of the annual Deep Listening Retreats in 2010 and comes housed in a stunning, custom designed slipcover with doublewide spines, limited to 500 copies!

After a blip in the release schedule Madlib drops the 11th Medicine Show this week, loaded with 28 neck snapping, head-mushing, unreleased HipHop collabs. It includes a cut from the ill-fated 2nd Jaylib LP plus the unveiling of The Professionals – a hookup up with sibling Oh No – besides guest spots from AG, Karriem Riggins, Guilt Simpson, MED and more from the Stones Throw stable, plus a 12 page booklet with one charming anecdote about the album’s near-tragic background.

On a dancefloor tip we’d have to recommend drawing for the hand-stamped Selah Waddada 7″ featuring a sweet reggae soul tune from Joe White plus a super heavyweight dub version on the flip = DEADLY. For something more visceral check the mysterious Objekt 12″ from a very promising new Berlin producer – tipped by everyone from Peverelist to Ben UFO and Jackmaster, and the 2nd LHF 12″ from Blackdown’s Keysound circle for some proper fractal UK rave essence. And last, but by no means least, grab a copy of S-X’s essential ‘Wooo Riddim’ backed with an exclusive DJ Q remix before they’re all gone!!!

Also out this week, new releases from Ras G, Barn Owl, Royal T, Kowton, Roedelius, Ducktails vs Rangers, Zs, Peter Broderick, Jatoma, LCD Soundsystem, Andy Stott, Soul Jazz, Sofrito, Fabio Orsi, Siriusmo, Sbtrkt, Iron & Wine, Eleh, Expo 70, Minks, Sic Alps and much much more.

Have yourselves a fabulous week….

Peace! Nekkers…xx

DEMDIKE STARE
Tryptych
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
Modern Love
3CD // £16.99

*Lavish 3CD set (23 tracks/160 minutes long) housed in a triple panel Digifile – bringing together three albums previously only available on vinyl, plus an extra 40 minutes of bonus material recorded during the same sessions – completely exclusive to this release* Demdike Stare is a project made up of two insatiable vinyl collectors based in the north of England: Sean Canty (who works for the esteemed Finders Keepers label) and Miles Whittaker (a longtime producer and DJ who has released music under the MLZ moniker and as part of Pendle Coven). The music Demdike Stare make is hard to pin down, based largely around archival musical sources ranging from obscure library records to long forgotten jazz, early electronic, and industrial recordings, alongside an array of Iranian, Pakistani, Turkish and Eastern European material largely unknown in the Western world. Demdike Stare absorb and re-align these found sounds via their ever-expanding array of analogue machinery, ending up with something that is in part Plunderphonic, but ultimately completely new. Their music has sometimes been lumped-in with the Hypnagogic, Hauntological and, most recently, ‘Witch House’ movements, but ultimately Demdike Stare should appeal to anyone with an interest in everything from classic KPM library records through to the music of Basic Channel and all the way to the smudged, altered-realities of James Ferraro and The Caretaker. That is, at least until the next record, when the frames of reference might just change up and take them somewhere completely different…

VARIOUS / FINDERS KEEPERS
Thai! Dai?
WORLD
FINDERS KEEPERS
CD // £9.99

Absolutely Killer collection of niche, mid-70s Thai music tracked down and collated by the irrepressible crew at Finders Keepers. Ever since that 7″ of Sroeng Santi’s Black Sabbath cover sneaked out last year we’ve been aching for the full length set, assured by the bods at FK that it was going be something heavy. The final, outstanding product is unique not only for the fact that many of the tunes are previously unissued, even in Thailand itself, but also for the fact it represents a very small, specific strain of sonic fusions/experiments, which while influenced by American and European ‘psyche’ or ‘surf’ music could never comfortably be called either. Falling somewhere between the indigenous styles of Luk Thung (song of the countryside) and Luk Krung (song of the city), these fourteen tracks used the newly available electric bass, guitar and keyboards to reset traditional Thai memes in a fuzzed-up and groovy-as-heck context, no doubt aware of their foreign counterparts, but disconnected from their politics and societal impositions. Like recent excavations of Cambodian rock, the brilliance of this music partly stems from the shock value but the effect lasts much longer when you really start to digest their crazy juxtapositions and incredibly unique, innate sense of funk. From Plearn Promdan’s outrageously heavy western tribute ‘Ying Ting’ to Sroeng Santi’s aforementioned Sabbath cover, to the twinkling xylophone and limbre funk of Rung Petchburi’s Pai Joi’ and the fiercely psychedelic, exotic burn of Teungjai Bunpraruksa’s ‘Kanong Krung’ and it’s utterly deranged bassline, this album is a total revelation. ‘Thai! Dai!’ is simply the most distinctive record Finders Keepers have released since the ‘Pomegranates’ LP, and requires your attention immediately. Very heartily recommended!

POPOL VUH
The Werner Herzog Soundtracks (Deluxe Box Set)
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
SPV
Deluxe 5CD Box Set + Book // £39.99

**Super luxurious, Limited edition 5CD collector’s box including 98-page hardback book** The divine music of Popol Vuh is inextricable from the Werner Herzog films it soundtracks. German label SPV have compiled their body of five full length cinematic commissions Heart of Glass (1976), and the Klaus Kinski-starring Aguirre (1972), Nosferatu (1979), Fitzcarraldo (1982) and Cobra Verde (1987) in one beautiful box set. Scoring Herzog’s ‘Aguirre’, Popol Vuh, lead by Florian Fricke, established a longstanding relationship with the director, providing him with a milestone of electronic music which is still named as a masterpiece to this day. Fricke’s innately moving compositions presaged the electronic ambient and new age genres, incorporating avant-garde classical, religious music, prog and krautrock themes into a substantial, harmonically rich sound. As fellow krautrock pioneer Klaus Schulze says “Here, he went on to create a new world, which Werner Herzog loves so much, transforming the thought pattern of electronic music into the language of acoustic ethno music” perfectly reflecting the films inherent themes of humanity, religion and nature. Over the next fifteen years Fricke’s musical evolution was charted by his work for Herzog, weaving increasingly elaborate instrumentation into the electronic fabric of his compositions. Between his captivating choral work for Nosferatu, the operatic classicism of Fitzcarraldo, or the breathtaking lushness of Cobra Verde, Fricke and Popol Vuh inspired a generation and re-defined the art of the soundtrack. This box set is a tremendous testament to his accomplishments – grab one while you can.

CEZARY GAPIK
Contrast I
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
WHITE BOX
LP // £12.99

**Strictly Limited to 400 copies, first 100 on red vinyl** White Box showcase two sides of Cezary Gapik’s character with an alternately terrifying and reflective slab of blood red wax. Active in the Polish underground for over two decades, Cezary’s work incorporates the fundamentals of avant-garde music by Stockhausen, Feldman, Ferrari et al with computer processing and collaborations with artists such as Scorn, creating music based on drones and micro-tonal sound interlaced with field recordings and glitch edits. His two compositions here are clearly defined by their evocative titles. Entering the vast subduction zone of ‘Tremor’ we find a wall of subbass forced beneath layers of excoriating noise, the resultant friction creating masses of kinetic energy released as pure, blistered noise before cooling to a spongy mass of molten granite drones resonating over an endless plain. If that side was the genesis, ‘Drowsiness’ could be a time-lapsed sonic image of billions of years of ecosystem evolution, a calm, steadily blooming mass of harmonic forestation sprawling across the tract of newly created land, all at once blissfully serene, but with an underlying meditative and psychedelic agenda. We cant wait for the next two instalments – highly recommended.

BLACK SWAN
In 8 Movements
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
EXPERIMEDIA
LP // £14.99

Majestic and mysterious album of lucid dreamlike dronescapes from an unregistered entity – quite a must for fans of Stars Of The Lid, Leyland Kirby, Phillip Jeck or Indignant Senility. ‘Drones For Bleeding Hearts. In 8 Movements’ submerses us in a flickering, half-lit world of creaking, unidentified acousmatic sound and orchestrated drones with chillingly tangible atmospherics. When Black Swan drops the temperature, say with a sudden ghoulish howl from the peripheries or a disorientating blast of icy nothingness, you can practically feel your hair moving in kinaesthetic syncopation. To this degree he evokes the psychedelic, gaseous nature of Phillip Jeck’s music and also the piloerect effect of Indignant Senility’s Wagnerian overtones. But there’s something detached, silhouetted and lurking between the lines that suggests something creepier, as though Black Swan is watching you listen to his music with a face caught somewhere between voyeuristic sneer and irreconcilable sorrow. It’s too early in the day to be falling into this right now, but once night falls we’d imagine the effect to be massively intensified.

MADLIB
Medicine Show No. 11: Low Budget High Fi Music
BEATS / DOWNTEMPO / BOOGIE
MMS
CD // £12.99

Following a slight pause in the schedule Madlib drops Medicine Show #11, 28 previously unreleased HipHop collabs with Dilla, AG, Guilty Simpson, MED, Oh No, and Karriem Riggins. The album’s unofficial title ‘Dirty demos selected by the Loop Digga’ refers to the CD containing all these tracks, largely produced between summers 2009-2010, which was recovered from Madlib’s Loop Digga Hideaway after it was ravaged by a forest fire. Needless to say, the disc’s rescuer was rewarded by Madlib in fine style. The tracks range from fully polished to half-baked, including a track from the ill-fated 2nd Jaylib album and mad handfuls of that special downbeat psychedelic sh*t. This CD issue includes an 12-page booklet featuring artwork by Isabel Samaras and design by Jeff Jank. Killer.

TIMELESS PULSE (PAULINE OLIVEROS)
Trio
ELECTRONIC
TAIGA
2LP // £19.99

**Limited edition of 500 copies, housed in custom designed slipcover and jacket with doublewide spines** ‘Trio’ is the first vinyl LP by Timeless Pulse, the avant-garde triumvirate of Pauline Oliveros playing accordion, joined by percussionists George Marsh and Jennifer Wilsey Marsh. Their third album is released in honor of the 20th annual Deep Listening Retreats held in 2010 in Camallera, Spain and Petaluma, California. Since forming in 1991 the full ensemble, including Thomas Buckner and David Wessel, has released two live recordings on CD: ‘Live at CNMAT’ and ‘Quintet.’ Now stripped down to a trio, this is the first time they’ve recorded in a studio and released on vinyl. The attention to detail of this LP is just beautiful, from the individual track descriptions on the sleeve to the custom slipcase, and of course the wonderful free-improvisations within. Entering to ‘Bellshine’ Pauline’s dronal melodies, George’s cymbals and Jennifer’s array of bells and gongs creates an invocation for the whole album. As the session telepathically unfolds, the trio pay tribute to legendary jazz drummer Max Roach on ‘Maxed Out’ parts I & II, clearly among the most percussive pieces, while meditative gong songs ‘Matsuoka’ in tribute to the eponymous Zen teacher and ‘Which Way Did Our Zen Go?’ are timelessly spiritual, almost rendering time itself as an instrument in their gnostic geometry. This LP has captured some sort of magic which lovers of lucid dreaming and near-unconscious listening states will instantly recognise. A masterful double album – very highly recommended.

Singles of the Week

JOE WHITE / UNKNOWN
You’ll Never Know Another Love Like Mine / Version
DUB / REGGAE
Selah Waddada
7″ // £6.99

**Absolutely deadly Hand-stamped white label from this bespoke imprint – strictly limited copies!!!** 7″s of devastating dub soul by Joe White, backed up with a brain-wrecking dub transformation from an unknown source. It’s all very hush hush about who’s behind this, but we’d strongly recommend checking the samples for some high grade low-end treatments featuring Joe’s glorious lead vocal. The dry, stepping dub in particular is just deadly.

OBJEKT
Objekt EP1
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
OBJEKT
12″ // £6.99

Lean and hungry dubstep minimalism from the hugely promising Objekt label. We know b*b-all about the artists but in true, facelessly underground style, the music does all the talking. For the forward steppers ‘The Goose That Got Away’ jams on a warped 808 rhythm and ascending chords vibe, sounding something like Pearson Sound sparring with Jam City. Next, ‘Tinderbox’ turns out a more menacing vibe, building a forcefield of 808 bass to protect crunked-out triplet rolls and a rush of darkside adrenaline synths tapping into a deep reserve of UK rave essence. Support from Peverelist, Appleblim, Ben UFO and Pinch. This is the sh*t, basically. TIPPED!

LHF
EP2: The Line Path
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Keysound Recordings
12″ // £7.99

Much anticipated 2nd session from the LHF posse, giving life to four mutant UK underground hybrids from Amen Ra and Double Helix. Compared to the work of John Cage by The Fader, ‘The Line Path’ is a deftly woven urban collage of extracted HipHop, R&B, Garage, Grime and Dubstep essence, reading like some wordless comic strip set during the weekend of a London raver. Double Helix takes the driving seat with ‘Chamber Of Light’s Horsepower-style textural interplay, a Cagean adventure in the bass bin. ‘Bass 2 Dark’ follows, infusing angular ethnocentric drums with ‘ardcore flashbacks and dope Wu Tang samples, kinda like some pre-dubstep, adolescent dream finally come to fruition. Matters get brought firmly into 2011 with the sea-sick gangsta-boogie vibes of Amen Ra’s ‘Candy Rain’ on the flip, featuring some grade A accordion wooze, charmingly funked-up bass and pen-on-china percussion for the Mount Kimbie effect, while ‘Trifle’ is like some Grime instrumental from ’04 that was booted out onto the streets only to lose its marbles on hyper-skunk and be discovered at an undisclosed keysight. Heavyweight.

S-X
Wooo Riddim
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
BUTTERZ
10″ // £4.99

The biggest Grime riddim of the last year, finally available on vinyl and backed with a DJ Q remix!!! A-side features the bubbling 808s and shark-eyed synths of ‘Woooo Riddim’ straight up, sounding as lean, futuristic and skunked-out as every time you’ve heard it on the bus, youtube or soundcloud. D Double E may be missing but this riddim goes hard regardless. On the flip DJ Q’s remix lends a flush of feminine, twinkled-toed synths and cut-up vocals for the club. It’s possibly symptomatic of the times that it’s taken so long to land on wax, but Butterz have just made a lot of grime heads very, very happy with this pressing. Essential!

Kowton aka Joe Narcossist runs the fourth pair of riddims for the Punch Drunk-afilliated Idle Hands. This guy’s standing in the post dubstep world is inversely proportionate to his number of releases, four in four years, roughly speaking, with drops rumoured for very exciting new imprints. On this one ‘She Don’t Jack’ sticks with the sub-120bpm pace, furnishing his Bristol House with Terminator synth gazes, needly hi-hats and a beautifully…
ALEX CLARE / SBTRKT
Up All Night (SBTRKT Mixes)
ISLAND
10″ // £6.49

SBTRKT nails two remixes of the Diplo & Switch-produced ‘Up All Night’ by new Island signing, Alex Clare. Taking the propulsive garage rock riffage and blues-rich vocal of the original, man-of-the-moment SBTRKT twysts out a multidimensional Ragga-Garage-Pop killer with a slick 2nd half swing out. The VIP on the flip drops the vocal for a very useful club tool.
BENTON
Sinners / Necromancy
Box Clever
10″ // £6.49

Fourth strike from the Box Clever label, presenting the cyber dread halfstep sound of Benton. A-side ‘Sinners’ rolls with a Distance-styled doomy sound, ll seething, squashed riffage and chest-crushing subs. ‘Necromancy’ has more restraint. poised like a narrow-eyed Loefah cut focused on droning bass weight and electro-sprung snares.
DISTAL & HXDB / MAYHEM & DISTAL
Typewriter Tune VIP / Frozen Barnacles
SUREFIRE SOUND
12″ // £5.99

Following an inclusion on Soul Jazz’s ‘Future Bass’ comp, Distal links with HXDB and Mayhem for two post-Dubstep poses. ‘Typewriter Tune VIP’ slots neatly into the slipstream of Night Slugs or Hessle Audio with an electroid Funky skip at 130bpm, whereas ‘Frozen Barnacles’ is a thick swinger revolving around quaking half-timed subs and jazz-techy synth flourishes.
EVERGREEN & LANDLORD / RSD
Righteous featuring Danman (RSD Mix)
REGGAE ROAST
12″ // £5.99

Rootical steppers, reworked in three versions by RSD, Nucleus Roots and Dark Arx. Evergreen, Landlord and Ruckspin’s original ‘Righteous’ is coolly measured for the bigger soundsystems and hotboxed bedrooms, while RSD brigns the vibe up-to-the-minute for a deft dubstep remake, Nucleus Roots do their hazy paced thing and Dark Arx gives the highlight, a light-footed 2-step remix comfortably compatible with your techier Berlin sounds.
GLENTRON / ISAAC MARTIN / VARIOUS
SB001
SURELY BASSY
12″ // £5.99

Debut disc from Surely Bassy Records; four tracks of tenderised post-Dubstep, Future Garage and electronica. Glentron makes first contact with ‘Cast A Light’, a frothy swinger with down-pitched soul vox for fans of Submerse or Sepalcure, while Mepham’s ‘Shack’ is a propulsive, nu-rootsy, ambient stepper. We’re feeling the warmest vibes from Isaac Martin’s Deep Garage groove ‘A New Dawn (Oh Baby)’ and Ashdown’s ‘Stems’ lands somwhere between older Appleblim or…
VON D / SKREAM
Show Me ft. Phephe (Skream Mix)
SUB FREQ
12″ // £5.99

Super-slick Dubstep-pop nugget from Von D reinforced with a Skream remix! The original has an assured play-it-again factor due to Phephe’s infectious vocal and wickedly balanced riddim from Von D constantly feeling like it’s about to tip into blissed junglist territory. Skream coolly sticks with the vibe on the flip, embellishing the halfstep skank with darkside licks and subbass drops that just cut that little bit deeper than the rest….

CD // £11.49

Reissue of Hans-Joachim’s eleventh – and best selling – solo album, originally released in 1984 by Editions EG. Arriving at the tail end of what many would call his golden period, ‘Gift Of The Moment’ features eleven compositions by former Cluster/Harmonia man, Roedelius accompanied by Dutch classical cellist, Arjen Uittenbogaard, and violinist Tjitse Letterie. It almost completes his transition from electronic music to a purely instrumental, conventionally classical arrangement, or…

DUCKTAILS / RANGERS
Bored Fortress Split
NOT NOT FUN
7″ // £6.49

Lambent H-Pop split from Ridgewood, New Jersey’s Ducktails and OESB-favourite, Rangers. Matthew Mondanile’s A-side contains a cut from his recent ‘Arcade Dynamics’ LP in the warbly ‘Arcade Shift’, plus the screwed and sandy shuffle of ‘Paisley Pattern’. Rangers’ side ‘The Bride Of Marin’ is like some glowing ’80s infomercial incidental buried beneath a mire of ectoplasmic fuzz gunk. Sleeve art by Spencer Longo. A treat!
NO AGE / INFINITE BODY
Bored Fortress Split
NOT NOT FUN
7″ // £6.99

West coast staples Infinite Body and No Age share the latest side from NNF’s Bored Fortress Club series. Both tracks strangely share a similar trajectory, Infinite Body’s ‘Between You Can Crawl Like This Is The End’ emitting a majestic, auto-fluorescent harmonic sound cloud, and No Age building a dense thicket of shoegaze distortion, but both resolving the pressure with divine closing strokes. Sleeve art by Cody De Franco.
WET HAIR / PEAKING LIGHTS

Ace edition from NNF’s Bored Fortress Club series, pairing Iowa’s Wet Hair with California’s Peaking Lights. Wet Hair’s ‘Blessed’ hijack woozy Kraut-ish loops and transform them into a spiraling lo-fi raga catharsis. Special single-sider featuring Bobby Konders’ deeply spiritual ‘Black & White’ production as Dub Poets. Originally released in 1992, this track has lost none of it’s dancefloor-arresting impact.
O/V/R
Post Traumatic Son (Ben Klock Mixes)
Blueprint Records
12″ // £6.49

**Transparent Vinyl** Fiercely strong twelve featuring Ben Klock’s O/V/R remixes. The Berghain and OstGut mainstay delineates ‘Post-Traumatic Son’ in three versions. Cut for the longer A-side, the ‘Techno’ mix is all about the tension of clipped and incrementally shifting loops, keeping the vibe tight-lipped and sexy. On the flip a ‘Wave’ mix opens the groove up with loping bassline, snakey snare bites and a wide arcing synthline before the ‘Vibe’…
EVER VIVID
Sketches Of My Life
OPEN MIND RECORDINGS
12″ // £6.99

Four tracks of deep techno and electro produced by Nick Dunton, one half of The 65D Mavericks. ‘Once’ gazes out to Berlin with spacious dub chords and elegant piano motifs, while ‘Lost Love’ hits a groove of crisp and atmospheric Electro reminiscent of Claro’s lushest moments. ‘Fallen’ is darker take on the Electro sound, probably closer to the sharpened contours of Bitstream, and ‘Abandoned Virtues’ signals to classic, twinkling motor…
BADAWI / ANDY STOTT
The Axiom (Andy Stott / Vaccine Mixes)
The Agriculture
12″ // £6.99

Rudely teched-out remixes of Badawi’s ‘The Axiom’ by Andy Stott and Vaccine. Lain dormant since his ‘Tell Me Anything’ 12″, Mr Stott reviews ‘The Axiom’ from a distanced dub-house stance, emitting mechanical valve gasps of white noise over a bulbously spherical bassline and beautifully well-paced arrangement to consume the dancefloor. Vaccine’s mix is more urgent, more sci-fi cinematic, with limb-severing snares puncturing a swung halfstep pattern amidst swarming synthesizer wraiths…
DEEP SPACE ORCHESTRA
Riding In My Imaginary Jeep
Foto Recordings
12″ // £5.99

Modern Deep House with a rugged integrity from Deep Space Orchestra, backed with an up-to-the-minute remix by OOFT! Deployng an array of vintage synths and drum machines, ‘Riding In My Imaginary Jeep’ is perhaps comparable to the likes of Soulphiction’s take on spaced-out and cosmic House music, while ‘Sir Shina’ gets ruff with a dope mid-tempo Afrobeat edit. OOFT! drop their remix on the flip, giving ‘Riding…’ a lick of…
FRANCO CANGELLI
Frantic EP
MOWAR
12″ // £5.99

Four tracks of Detroit/Chicago-inspired techno finesse from Gent’s Franco Cangelli, On the A-side ‘Pressure’ flirts with aquatic acid driven dub techno while ‘Frantic’ has a chunkier, but still bloopy, Chicago pump. Flip it and ‘Fringe’ yearns for classic Detroit styles with elegant, streamlined synths and ‘Deviate’ loosens up for a sweetly featherlight techno swing groover.
JAMES RUSKIN
Sabre EP
Blueprint Records
12″ // £6.49

Wicked Techno functions from James Ruskin with two highly effective dancefloor variants. This producer is certainly on form right now with killer O/V/R tracks and these couple of winners in his pocket. ‘Sabre’ is one of the most intriguing cuts we’ve heard from this fella in years, opening with abstract metallic forms zipping around the sound sphere before coalescing into a minimised techno pattern reminiscent of the recent Antonym and…
PLASTIKMAN
Consumed / Pakard
UNKNOWN LABEL
12″ // £8.99

Two classic Plastikman productions circa 1996. The masterfully restrained ‘Consumed’ appeared on the album of the same title, sounding as artfully synthetic and subliminally affecting as ever. ‘Pakard’ was the opener to ‘Artifakts (BC)’, featuring Mr Hawtin on a reflective, downbeat acid groove.
REGIS
Delivered Into The Hands Of Indifference
DOWNWARDS
CD // £13.99

Downwards CD reissue of this classic and super-rare Regis LP from 1998. ‘Delivered Into The Hands Of Indifference’ is a true classic of the industrial techno canon, displaying a sophistication and vision of restrained brutality that’s aged remarkably well, considering the sea-change in techno styles since the late 90’s. Although he now alternately opts for streamlined reduction and broken offbeat styles, it’s still clear to hear this is a Regis…
TEVO HOWARD
The Age Of Compassion
BUZZIN’ FLY
12″ // £5.49

Superb transmission from Tevo Howard, drifting away from raw Chi-House to somewhere more elegant and tender. Backed with a propulsive minimal tech-house mix from Donnacha Costello and a sweetly warped mid-tempo mix from Berlin’s Aera, both the beatless and House mixes of ‘The Age Of Compassion’ are definitely some of Tevo’s finest works, refined with a restrained melodic subtlety and effortlessly gliding machine rhythms.

The final, outstanding product is unique not only for the fact that many of the tunes…

A definitive presentation of classic Brazilian music from the 1960s in typical Soul Jazz quality. Replete with 76-page book of extensive texts and exclusive photography, this double disc compilation distinguishes Bossa Nova as a revolutionary modern music far removed from the cocktail-sipping image it accrued, a music richly informed by American Jazz and the innate Brazilian spirit of the genre’s most important auteur, João Gilberto. Against a backdrop of social…

Hey Klong Yao!: Essential Collection of Modernized Thia Music from the 1960s
EM
CD // £14.99

Wonderfully raucous and funked-up side of modernized Thai music from the ’60s, also known as “Shadow music”. Essentially these are the attempts of composer Phayong Mukda to marry Thai classical percussion to Latin and Big Band melodies of the time, also borrowing from western rock sounds like Buddy Holly’s thrilling electric riffs. The effect is undeniably funky and utterly unlike anything we’ve come across before. A total must have for…
