Hello,

We start the week with Jim O’Rourke who’s given Editions Mego access to his enviable archives for the first in a series documenting his analog synth and tape works spanning the last 25 years. O’Rourke is an immensely versatile musician and evidently no electronic dilettante, as these incredible compositions prove. If you’re into the modular electronics of Keith Fullerton Whitman – this is an absolute must.

The magnificent Senufo Editions label once again provide a weekly highlight with ‘Handcut’ by Bellows, a project featuring label head Giuseppe Ielasi together with intriguing producer Nicola Ratti. It was originally released as an LP on Alga Marghen’s Plannam sublabel and charted in several notable end of year lists last year, but now features as a beautifully presented CD reissue with 20 minutes of extra material, sounding something like The Caretaker with added subbass and concrète elements. There are only 220 copies available on this one – we urge you to check it out.

Also In the drone zone, Richard Ingram’s sophomore album returns to engrossingly desolate and cinematic climes, exquisitely rendered by Taylor Deupree’s mastering. His chilling style encompasses atmospheres recalling Jean-Claude Eloy and misty dub nodding to Rhythm & Sound, while firmly establishing an innately clammy, doomy sound of his own. Again – the dark ambient/drone market is a flooded one, but this excellent album really does fall into the top tier and comes highly recommended.

Over on the floor, Anti G has just moved the game forward a step or two with his ‘Kentje’sz Beatsz’ debut release, and like Planet Mu’s ‘Jukes & Bangs’ selection before it, it uncovers a virulent and totally individual take on rhythm programming and ultra-fresh Fruity Loops arrangements which has been tying us in knots ever since we copped the vids on youtube. Pardon the gush, but this is easily one of the most exhilarating records we’ve heard all year.

Minimal Wave continue to cut across electro time and space with ‘The Hidden Tapes’, compiling ten minimal synth rarities from Japan to Yugoslavia circa ’79-’85. The three Belgian tracks especially are a treat, and the adroit vocoder groove of Japan’s Sympathy Nervous from 1980 is a must, all pressed on 180g vinyl and housed in the highest quality jacket and inner. Only 999 copies, well recommended!

For the Kosmische types, Justin Wright’s latest Expo 70 excursion is a head melter, with two tracks recorded late last year surveying the widest synth and guitar panoramas, with some drum machine propulsion. We could almost mistake these for studio productions, they’re so impressively epic. Only 400 copies, in thick card sleeves, usual Aguirre quality.

One of the biggest shockers this week, however, has to be the Analog Africa reissue of ‘Funky Rob Way’, an obscure but absolutely DEADLY debut LP by cosmic Ghanaian funk legend Rob from 1977. It’s a mindblowing blend of cosmic Moog, guitar and JBs drumming which sees rare originals go for mad money on the 2nd hand market. That and the vitally raw and psychedelic ‘1st Album’ by Benin’s Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou are just utterly essential purchases – available on deluxe LP and CD editions.

After excellent releases from Hieroglyphic Being, OPN and Design A wave, London’s promising Alter label returns with ‘The Letter’ by Liberez. The improvised mixture of power electronics, folk drone and concrète sounds with a powerful studio finish recalls the work of KTL and references Robert Ashley – and If you know what that means you’d do well to snap up one of the 300 copies, cut by Rashad at Berlin’s D&M.

From the US we’ve got two very contrasting cuts. Matthewdavid’s Leaving Records drop their first ever vinyl release with a bewildering HipHop white label by the mysterious Usual, and Moodymann rounds off NDATL’s ‘Music Institute 20th Anniversary’ series with an edit of Alexander Robotnick’s seminal ‘Problemes D’Amour, on marbled vinyl to boot. Ya don’t want to miss that! Closer to home, the Fat City/Finders Keepers affiliated Brutal Music present a wicked session by Cherrystones aka Godsy, covering an amazing original production and two edits of totally obscure wavey disco and cosmic Italo. Meanwhile in the bassbins, Bok Bok drops his debut solo EP proper on Night Slugs, fusing classic Grime and Chicago House in uniquely graphic fashion, and Teeth follows his addictive 502 outing with a seriously crafty Foot-stepping (you read it here first, ha!) special for Noppa. These records will make you dance better!

Also out this week, new music from Bvdub, Floating Points, Jamie XX, Letherette, Toro Y Moi, Locussolus, Jon Convex, Bass Clef, Stellar Om Source, Beirut, Jonsi, Eveson, Kyle Hall, Sigha, Margaret Dygas, Holy Other, Doshy, Milyoo and much much more.

Have yourselves a fabulous week….

Peace! nekkers…xx

Albums of the Week

JIM O’ROURKE
Old News #5
ELECTRONIC
Editions Mego
2LP // £19.99

*First instalment in this new Editions Mego series providing a long overdue and much needed vinyl-only glimpse into Jim O’rourke’s electronic/synth music archive* ‘Old News No.5’ introduces a “nearly regular series of vinyl albums documenting analog synth and tape works (both studio and live) from the depths of Jim O’Rourke’s archive, spanning a near quarter of a century in the field.” Side A ‘Pedal & Pedal’ features 15 minutes recorded at Super Deluxe, Tokyo, 2010. It unfurls a series of tender pastoral drones and scuttling modular squiggles organised with a deceptively natural evolution, leading to one dense thicket of discombobulating chaos and a lush resolution. Side B ‘Detain The Man To Whom’ scrolls back to the Steamroom, Chicago, ’92 and a labyrinthine 20-minute tangle of metallic tones and abyssal, earthquaking drones highly liable to disorientate, while ethereal melodies emerge from the murk only to be diffused back into the this vastly complex and abstract structure. We’re returned to the present with ‘It’s Not His Room Anymore’ recorded in Tokyo, 2010. It’s a suggestively quiet and unnerving expanse of studio experimentation sounding like the dialogue of two modems speaking in tongues in the creaking hull of an ancient space station, and is backed with ‘Mother & Who’, an alternative version of what would become O’Rourke’s live set at the Ae-curated 2003 All Tomorrows Parties Festival. This album will only be available on vinyl and is very highly recommended to fans of Keith Fullerton Whitman, Bee Mask or indeed the sprawling catalogue of the mighty Jim O’Rourke himself. Very highly recommended.

VARIOUS / MINIMAL WAVE
The Hidden Tapes
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
Minimal Wave
LP // £19.99

Minimal Wave compile ten rare, unreleased and precious tracks from around the world circa ’79-’85 selected by Veronica Vasicka. ‘The Hidden tapes’ spans DIY synth music from Japan to Belgrade, from noisy new wave to strobing proto-Industrial dance music. The first side opens to ‘Care’ by SS-Say from Denmark, full of euphoric ’84 arpeggios and epic pop vox from Inge Shannon, before relocating to Yugoslavia for Oskarova Fobija’s pert synthpop on ‘Beli Dekolte’ from 1983 and an immense highlight from 1980 Japan, the ornate vocoder groove ‘Polaroid’ courtesy of Sympathy Nervous aka Yoshimi Niinuma and Tatsuya Senzaki. And that’s not forgetting two standardly darker aces from Belgium thanks to Danton’s Voice and Pas De Deux. The B-side includes three tracks from the UK: Rob Lawrence and Mark Phillips’ scuzzy, urgent rhythms and distorted on ‘Computer Bank’, the piquant melody of The Fast Set’s ‘Kaleidecon’, and the cinematic gloom of Kym Amps’ ‘You Don’t Know My Name’. However the highlights here have to be the seductively elegant Belgian electro-pop of ‘Destination Pour L’Inconnu’ by Reservé, circa 1981 and the uniquely artful ‘Microphone Connection’, a Belgian/USA tape composition by Tara Cross and Henk Wallays taken from the legendary ‘Insane Music For Insane People’ cassette series. All tracks are lovingly remastered and appear in a limited edition of 999 copies, pressed on 180g vinyl and housed in heavy printed jacket with printed inner jacket. Highly Recommended.

ANTI-G
Anti-G Presents Kentje’sz Beatsz
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Planet Mu
CD // £10.99

This is the one we’ve been waiting for!!! Following their ongoing exposé of Chicago Footwork, Planet Mu turn their keen ears to the ‘floor and the sound of Bubbling; the hyper-futuristic Dutch dance craze perpetuated by the 2nd and 3rd generation descendants of Caribbean immigrants. We’ll let the ever-knowledgeable Dave Quam explain the origins “At a party in the late 80s in The Hague, a local DJ by the name of DJ Moortje accidentally dropped a dancehall twelve-inch at 45RPMs, causing chaos in the audience. Not the kind of negative heckling you get when a record skipped, but the kind of excitement that happens when a movement has been started. This beautiful mistake resulted in Bubbling, a cultural expression of immigrants from The Dutch Antilles and Suriname, a genre that would take these communities by storm in Holland in the 1990s. Jamaican exports such as the Fever Pitch and Bam Bam riddims were double and half-timed, with Cutty Ranks on one hand sounding like a pre-pubescent chipmunk, the other hand sounding like an evil duppy. Its sound borrowed slave rhythms from Curacao (DJ Moortje’s origin), creating a new Caribbean style of music in Europe that ran parallel to London’s Jungle scene.” Fast forward a generation, and now armed with pirate copies of Fruity Loops and basic PCs, kids like 18 year old Anti-G, Shaun-D, Master-D, Daycard, and Deschuurman are fusing the traditional Dembow rhythms of reggaeton with traces of HipHop, Funky House, Grime, and whatever else they feel like, resulting in some of the most exhilarating dance trax we’ve heard since Planet Mu’s ‘Jukes & Bangs Vol.1’. ‘Kentje’sz Beatsz’ covers a spectrum of Anti-G’s productions between 2009 and 2010. Over these sixteen tracks his synths sound like Sooty & Sweep having a battery acid enema in a Surinamese space station, while the beats are arranged with an effortless Rubik’s cube complexity. Most importantly of all, it makes you want to dance like a f**king Transformer rendered by Alex Rutterford and Hecker. That might not sound so appealling to some, but check the kids popping and locking to this stuff on youtube and you’ll soon catch the bug. No doubt, this is already one of our records of the year, and manages to make 90% of stuff out there seem stiff and 5 years behind the times. Highly Highly recommended!!!

EXPO 70
Inaudible Bicoastal Trajectory
ELECTRONIC
Aguirre
LP // £14.99

**Limited to 400 copies, thick cardboard jacket, 160g vinyl** Two extended (inter)zone-outs by Justin Wright, recorded live on tour in late 2078. A-side ‘Hynotic Brain Cloud Float’ was captured at Zebulon Bar, New York, accompanied by visuals from the film Fantastic Planet. At the start you can even hear cash registers ringing in the background, and we’re soon transported far away from civilization and into an utterly deserted dronescape, a plangently searching guitar reminiscent of Barn Owl scanning the sprawl of lushly unfolding synthdrones. At a crucial moment, a slow, motorik, analogue drum pulse appears to propel the track deeper down the desolate highway, leaving us dusted and dazed but throughly satisifed by the end. The other performance occurred at KJFC in California and descends through clouds of synth to a barren expanse of awe-inspiring solo guitar scapes, the sort of wide-skied, panoramic vision which makes listeners at home feel lost in the vast miasmah. This passage of purposeful meditation is resolved with an upwards ascent of Steve Moore-style machine pulses, and a cosmically chaotic finale. Truly epic material.

BELLOWS
Handcut
ELECTRONIC
Senufo Editions
CD // £11.99

**Edition of 220 copies only** Bellows are Giuseppe Ielasi and Nicola Ratti. ‘Handcut’ is their 2nd release as a duo, originally appearing as an LP on the Alga Marghen sublabel, Planam, and subsequently listed in The Wire magazine’s end of year chart. This beautifully presented CD edition includes 23 minutes of unreleased extra material recorded one year after the original sessions. The Bellows project is concerned with “…a simple technique of cutting/destroying and amplifying vinyl records with contact microphones, creating new grooves and physical loops while capturing the sounds on a revox tape machine with long tapeloops.” These loops are subtly embellished with effect pedals and sine waves, resulting in an enigmatic array of frictional textures, ghostly melodies and effervescent reverb strongly reminiscent of The Caretaker’s compositions, but with a more mysterious, unexplained clutch of source material and the presence of deep, rumbling subbass apparitions. The label likens it to “a sort of atmospheric and modern electronic music recorded at the beginning of the twentieth century on 78rpm shellac records”, and we’d be inclined to agree, but there’s also shapes and tonalities which wouldn’t have been present in that era, from cochlea-kicking bass hits to supple subbass frequencies. At the risk of repeating ourselves, this is another immensely captivating and uniquely esoteric Senufo Edition, and highly recommended to listeners with a taste for slowly immersive tone and texture. Letterpressed sleeve printed by Ben Owen/Middle Press and Photographic insert by Amadeo Martegani – just beautiful stuff from end to end.

RICHARD INGRAM
Happy Hour
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
White Box Recordings
CD // £8.99

Richard A.Ingram returns with an engrossing, desolate and cinematic suite of recordings that expand his vision of mildewed and mottled doom ambience after last years excellent debut album ‘Consolamentum’. Like its predecessor, the machinations of Ingram’s underworld are left to the imagination; there’s no clear origin to his sounds, everything is obfuscated in a murk, creating that palpable feeling of fear one might find when waking up in the middle of the night, before your eyes adjust to the darkness. The first instance of ‘Agile Drone’ slowly rises through murky tape noise to pass through unseen acousmatics and filtered piano until a booming bass shocks us into a sort of paralysis, the fear intensified by immobility while uncontrollable apparitions swirl at the peripheries. Next ‘Truncheon Tree’ slightly dissipates the unease with an ethereal passage of almost Rhythm & Sound-like dub delays and piano peering out of misty atmospheres, the expert mastering from Taylor Deupree evidently enhancing the parameters of this illusory space. The final tracks, entitled ‘Chaos Fortifier’ and ‘Retro Morph’, venture into realms of aural perversity akin to the compelling yet disturbing visuals of Gaspar Noe (‘Enter The Void’ and ‘Irreversible’), also recalling the soundtrack by Jean-Claude Eloy or BJ Nilsen & Stillupsteypa with chilling precision. There’s so much of this sort of doomed ambience around these days – but Ingram really does slot into the top tier. Recommended.

HOLY OTHER
With U
BEATS / DOWNTEMPO / BOOGIE
Tri Angle
LP // £7.99

**Manchester’s own Holy Other touches down on Tri Angle with five sumptuous jams occupying the spooked space between R&B, techno and dark ambient**. It’s tempting to call it witch-house, of course, but Holy Other’s productions are so subtle and carefully wrought that we’d be doing him a huge disservice if we did. This music deserves to be taken on its own terms: as emotive and supremely evolved electronic music with a real force of personality. We’re drawn in with ‘Know Where’, a sleepy-eyed, mid-paced groover that sketches out the Holy Other universe: hard-jerking drums, synth ambience, technoid bleeps, eerie vocal snatches; it’s from this palette that he paints ‘Yr Love’ (think Kassem Mosse meets Hype Williams on a beach in Ibiza) and the similarly chugging ‘With U’ and ‘Feel Something’. The EP’s unmistakable centrepiece however is ‘Touch’ – it sounds like 2-step pitched-down and re-strung for Valium-munchers, Burial-esque vocal pressure meeting ultra-minimal, jeep-rocking claps and downshifting darkside synths in 10,000 leagues of reverb, making for a track as slickly cinematic as it is disorienting and plain RUDE. Put simply, it’s the kind of twisted but oddly romantic R&B futurism which Tri Angle consistently excels at sourcing. Yes, the tropes Holy Other works with are largely tried and tested, but with his high production values he massages them into something distinctive and truly powerful.

ROB
Funky Rob Way
WORLD
ANALOG AFRICA
LP // £13.99

The consistently excellent Analog Africa turn out a reissue of the stunning debut LP by cosmic Ghanaian funk legend, Rob! ‘Funky Rob Way’ was originally issued in an edition of 500 copies on the legendary Essiebons imprint in 1977 and copies trade for silly money these days. But it’s so easy to hear why. This gear is firing hot, combining the amazing talents of ambitious front man Rob, a trained pianist, with the army band, Mag-2, lead by the talented Amponsah Rockson. Together they hatched afiery, deeeeepl y funky sound blending a blazing horn section clearly nodding to the JBs, with spaced-out Moog and off course, a deadly rhythm section. The title track is a proper Afro-funk scorcher, contrasting sharply with the mindblowing ‘Forgive Us All’, a downtempo, eight minute cosmic spectacular with incredible Moog drones and guitar licks u there with Funkadelic’s ‘Maggot Brain’, only with a proper Ghanaian soul. Further in, there’s the blazing horns and Moog of ‘Boogie On’; the hard-hitting yet wickedly woozy cosmic funk of ‘Just One More Time’ and, oh my gosh, the squelchy bounce of ‘More’! Don’t think twice, this is an essential purchase for fans of innovative, futuristic Afro Funk of any kind!!!

ORCHESTRE POLY-RYTHMO DE COTONOU
The 1st Album
WORLD
ANALOG AFRICA
LP // £13.99

Pure fire from Analog Africa. Whether you’re a connoisseur of West African music or a complete newcomer, know that this 1973 recording from Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou (try spelling that when you’re drunk) is as vitally raw and psychedelic as it gets. Long regarded as Benin’s most innovative outfit, OP-R (as we’ll call ’em from here on in) have featured on numerous previous Analog Africa releases, but this is the very first airing of some of their most classic, foundational material. Working with the traditional rhythms of Vodoun and injecting some well-judged Western, Latin and of course modern African influences into its veins, the 16-strong band travelled to Lagos to record this set of heavy Afrobeat, entirely composed by Vincent Ahehehinnou (who left the band soon after). The recording was rejected by their then-record company due to some background noise issues; a second session took place soon after, and yielded the tracks which made it onto the super-rare “official” LP. Some 30 years later, Analog Africa foudner Samy Ben Redjab came across a test pressing of the rejected session, and has put together this definitive 4-track edition using two lovingly remastered tracks from the rejected session and two from the officially approved LP. The result is an invaluable, fascinating document of a truly unique band captured at the height of their fierce and freewheeling powers.

LIBEREZ
The Letter
ELECTRONIC
ALTER
LP // £11.99

After a handful of excellent releases from Hieroglyphic Being, Oneohtrix Point Never/Tomutonttu and Design A Wave, Alter records present a far more sombre engagement from Southend’s Liberez. ‘The Letter’ is their debut album, an improvised session with elements of power electronics, folk drone, and concrète arranged with an abstract narrative derived from the deconstructed vocals of Nina Bosnic. Nina is accompanied by recording engineer John Hannon and Pete Wilkins, and multi instrumentalist Tom Scott James of Bo’ Weavil Recordings. Their cumulative sound calls to mind KTL and Raionbashi, likely attributable to the hi-end studio engineering of John Hannon, bringing to life an instinctive feel for visceral and tangibly textured noise elicited from a traditional set-up of drums and guitars, and more unorthodox methods of field recording on mobile phones and portable cassette recorders. Apparently it was a piece of text written by Bosnic which forms the backbone to the album, using the cadence and inflection of her speech as pattern, rather than melody, to play against. With ‘The Letter’ they attempt to subvert and deconstruct traditional structures, citing more influence from Robert Ashley than Chuck Berry, and if you know what that means, you’d do well to investigate this excellent set further. Vinyl cut by Rashad at D&M, Berlin, March 2011. Edition of 300 copies.

Far Nearer / Beat For

NUMBERS
12″ // £7.99

Jamie xx finally lands his Numbers debut! The distinctive steel-pan tones of ‘Far Nearer’ were touted since the end of last summer but only now make their way to full public consumption, just in time to soundtrack a hundred thousand (and one) sessions in the sun. It’s anthemic potential is undoubted, but it’s built with genuine class and the widest appeal imaginable (unless you don’t like dancing, or fun, or timelessly gratifying pop music), treading that fine line between sincere, melancholy soul and romantic pop with innate finesse. The newer production, ‘Beat For’ cuts a similar path but errs more towards the melancholy, reflecting shades of Burial or James Blake in the pitched vox and ethereal urban ambience, but those slicing drums, ultra-wide bass and detuned ’90s House riffs are built with a cannier dancefloor knowledge individual to Jamie’s deceptively effortless sound. This one just recommends itself.

BRUTAL MUSIC
12″ // £7.99

Brutal Music serve an absolute ace from notorious digger and maverick producer, Cherrystones aka Godsy. ‘Blacker Forest’ is a beast of an A-side, leading us blindly into a dense electric storm of droning synths referencing the furthest reaches of Krautrock and Industrial music before a shaking Breakbeat bites your ass from out of the darkness and vaults through time-and-space-warping edit acrobatics, all the while this untamed synth threatens to crush your very existence. Deploy this at your own risk. Flipside, ‘Lines’ is a very canny edit of a wavey disco track by Eddie & Sunshine from 1981, with strong hints of a sound which would influence the likes of Arpanet. We sh*t you not. Finally, ‘Frogmen’ takes it out to more cosmic climes, with spiralling Italo synth sequences and tumbling drums. Do not sleep on this!!!

Night Slugs

Night Slugs’ main man drops his long awaited solo debut proper. ‘Hyperpass’ opens play with its tense and foreboding feel, updating Bam Bam’s menacing Chicago dystopia for the swagger generation, while ‘Reminder’ fuses Pulse X stabs with sino-futuristic synth accents in darkly graphic fashion. The hyper-vivid street scene of ‘Silo Pass’ is our percy, simulating a sound like Jon E Cash’s burly 8-Bar beats, but suffused with chrome synth cadence and a spartan 2011 stance. This is a strong look. BIG tip!

We’re still recoiling from the impact of his ‘Shawty’ killer, as Teeth drops two uniquely programmed weapons on Noppa. Just like his anthem for Oneman’s 502 label, these two are twysted something crazy. ‘CNT’ finds that deadly, tendon-twitching tension between rolling tribal drums, pivoting 2-step snares and Juked kicks while patently melancholic synths arc in the night sky overheard. Flipside, ‘Lowcut Champagne’ starts out equally brooding while seductive Latin drum syncopations slither and slyde like some El-B nexxism. Maaan, this is gooood.

Harvey starts the shuffle with a ‘Long Dub’ of the seductively slow ‘Throwdown’, cutting across the ‘floor with a sun-dazed swagger, matched for narcotic infleunce by Emperor Machine’s ‘Special Full Length Version’ of ‘Little Boots’, a languidly psychedelic affair with boosting second wind for any flagging bodies. Prins Thomas & Lindstrom’s remix of ‘I…
SYL JOHNSON
Mythological 45s
NUMERO
5 X 7″ Box Set // £23.99

“If there was one complaint we heard about Syl Johnson’s massive 6LP/4CD overview Complete Mythology, it was its lack of portability. At 6.5 pounds, it doesn’t travel well between DJ gigs. And with a dozen previously unreleased undeniable floor fillers, it wasn’t long before folks began clamoring for a handful of these tunes on the compact 45 format. Sprawled across five 45s and wrapped in a custom Syl Johnson kraft…
TORO Y MOI
Still Sound Remixes EP
Amazing Sounds
12″ // £7.99

Toro Y Moi hands ‘Still Sound’ from his ‘Underneath The Pines’ LP to Toby Tobias for plush mid-tempo disco reworks. His ‘Moving Sound’ version is a creamy confection of vibin’ organ chords over melted bassline and dreamy drag House beats sounding not dissimilar to a dubbier Junior Boys production. The Deep Dub on the flip is more serene, while Voodoo Bears round up with a subtly spacious and twinkling, electro-edged…
PLANNINGTOROCK
W
DFA
2LP // £20.99

‘W’ is the sophomore album from Bolton-via-Berlin’s Planningtorock aka Janine Rostron. “One doesn’t hear a record like ‘W’ very often, that’s for sure, just as one seldom encounters an artist like Planningtorock’s Janine Rostron. In The Grip of W’s melodrama and uncommon beauty, suddenly all those clichés make sense: this album stops listeners in their tracks, blows their minds and makes them feel alive. W is melancholy and euphoric, epic…
TRANSATLANTIC DISCO ALLIANCE
Too Late EP
NANG
12″ // £5.99

Disco winkin’ from Boston to the Balkans, Sare Havlicek and Chas Bronz drop two original disco boogie tracks backed with a James Bright remix. ‘Too Late’ is a soul-tender vocal burner with sing-a-long chorus and booty grabbing bassline. ‘Happiness On A Leash’ is more uptempo, with blinding synth flares and wandring bassline. James Bright’s instrumental mix of ‘Too Late’ bumps up the tempo and dubs out the bass and keys…
VARIOUS / COMB & RAZOR SOUND
Brand New Wayo
COMB & RAZOR SOUND
CD // £15.99

Comb & Razor Sound presents a sizzling compilation of Nigerian boogie heat created between the boom period of 1979-1983. Following 23 years of military dictatorship, Nigeria enjoyed a democratic government and the influx of petrodollars and the expansion of industries – including the record industry – it brought with it. These 15 tracks are effectively post-disco but mixed with that inimitable Afrobeat swagger and the widespread addition of synths to…

REGGAE ROAST
12″ // £5.99

Four track teaser for Reggae Roast’s upcoming ‘Lick It Back’ compilation, including a Mungo’s Hi-Fi Remix. Earl 16’s lends a sweetened vocal to ‘Reggae Music’, riding a rooted slice of uptempo UK reggae produced by Nick Manasseh, replete with dub and version. Mungo’s Hi-Fi roll it out for the Dubstep crowd, slowing down until the subbass spills all over the groove and the vibe is right.

It’s anthemic potential is undoubted, but it’s built with genuine class and the widest appeal imaginable (unless you don’t like dancing, or fun, or…

We’ll let the ever-knowledgeable Dave Quam explain the origins “At a party in the late 80s in The Hague, a local DJ by the name…
BOK BOK
Southside EP
Night Slugs
12″ // £5.99

Night Slugs’ main man drops his long awaited solo debut proper. ‘Hyperpass’ opens play with its tense and foreboding feel, updating Bam Bam’s menacing Chicago dystopia for the swagger generation, while ‘Reminder’ fuses Pulse X stabs with sino-futuristic synth accents in darkly graphic fashion. The hyper-vivid street scene of ‘Silo Pass’ is our percy, simulating a sound like Jon E Cash’s burly 8-Bar beats, but suffused with chrome synth cadence…
TEETH
CNT / Lowcut Champagne
Noppa Records
12″ // £5.99

We’re still recoiling from the impact of his ‘Shawty’ killer, as Teeth drops two uniquely programmed weapons on Noppa. Just like his anthem for Oneman’s 502 label, these two are twysted something crazy. ‘CNT’ finds that deadly, tendon-twitching tension between rolling tribal drums, pivoting 2-step snares and Juked kicks while patently melancholic synths arc in the night sky overheard. Flipside, ‘Lowcut Champagne’ starts out equally brooding while seductive Latin drum…
JON CONVEX
Convexations
3024
12″ // £5.99

Hi-tech contemporary electro-funk from Jon Convex, aka half of Instra:mental. Debuting on Martyn’s 3024 label, Convex follows a template-setting mix for Fact with ‘Convexations’ and ‘Falling_Again’. The former is a sharply contoured electro-swagger joint riding year 3000 bass and the kind of synaesthetic synthlines that taste like biting down on foil. The latter shreds up gynoid boogie vox around pivoting, pointillist 2-step rhythm and wipes your memory clean with luscious…
BASS CLEF
Rollercoasters of the Heart
Punch Drunk Records
12″ // £5.99

Bass Clef heads up his first record of 2011, on Punch Drunk, no less. With his head in the clouds, ‘Rollercoaster Of The Heart’ palpitates to old-skool ‘ardcore keys, plummeting bassline and rolling drums compatible with your Funky/Post Dubstep nexus. Vibes alive! ‘So Cruel’ again updates the original 2 Bad Mice aesthetic with scene setting intro of lashing bass kicks and stuttering diva vocal rolling out with a more restrained,…

Milyoo grooves on a mid-tempo avant-boogie vibe backed with a swinging UK Garage remix from West Norwood Cassette Library. Further establishing his unique take on dancefloor electronics, Milyoo’s ‘Biogram V2’ arrives via super quiet intro, setting spacious parameters for a slow jacking rhythm inserted with Akufen-style edits. Flip it and WNCL amp the ‘floor potential with a lick of deep and swinging Garage rhythms.

Acephale
10″ // £10.49

**Silver foil embossed sleeve** Finally! We just got our grubby mitts on a stack of Acéphale’s 10″ Canadian pressing for Kingdom’s debut single. Essentially, this is the one that catapulted him into the bassbin consciousness around late 2009/early 2010, and comes loaded with the Hi-Tech R&B/Bass hybrid of ‘Mind Reader’ featuring combustible vocals from Shyvonne on the A-side, and the equally addictive ‘You’ on the flip. LOSTLOJIC & BISWEED
MOM UK1
MILLIONS OF MOMENTS
12″ // £7.99

The Millions Of Moments label cement their affections for post-Burial UK Bass music with the launch of MOM UK. The first release funnily enough comes from an Estonian producer, Bisweed, and Ukraine’s Lostlojic, displaying the far flung influence of Will Bevan’s moody 2-step soul. Their sound is deeply beholden to him, but executed with more than enough spectral space and attention to detail to warrant the comparison. Rush’d opens with…

MILLIONS OF MOMENTS
12″ // £7.99

**Transparent Vinyl** Lostlojic heads up the 2nd release on Millions Of Moments’ UK-Bass indebted sublabel with 2 tracks of deep but effervescent Garage soul/Dub Tech fusions. A-side the rhythm for ‘Out Of Ctrl’ oscillates between mercurial 2-step drums and rolling 4/4 pressure with diva loops and dub chords neatly tying it all together. Flipside ‘We Can Not Hide’ is more atmospheric, infected with a more tender R&B vibe and swung…
CYRUS
Looking Back / Soul Seeker
Chestplate
12″ // £5.99

Cyrus becomes the 2nd artist after Tunnidge to release a solo 12″ on Distance’s hallowed Chestplate label. He’s in menacing, moody form here, perhaps feeling some nostalgia for meditative ’06 styles on ‘Looking Back’, dropping the aggression of much of todays scene in favour of ballooning subbass and arcing searchlight synths primed for the depths of the night, pre-smoking ban daze, if ya get me? Flipside, ‘Soul Seeker’ is equally…
GUIDO & BAOBINGA
Ballin’ / Bumba
Build
12″ // £5.99

Craftier riddims outta Bristol courtesy of Guido & Baobinga. ‘Ballin’ arranges flared R&B synth bursts and flickering Juke rolls in a crisp but rugged post-Dubstep framework. Meanwhile, B-side ‘Bumba’ fluctuates between references to ’04 era Sino-Grime and Purple Dubstep with tricky rollers drum programming. Good stuff.
JAZZSTEPPA
Raising The Bar ft. Foreign Beggars
STUDIO ROCKERS
12″ // £5.99

Full spectrum bruk-out from Germany’s No.1 Dubstep fusion band and the UK’s Foreign Beggars. ‘Raising The Bar’ kicks off like Toxic Funk Berry on a bag of whizz, while the Beggars spit expletives your ma wouldn’t like. On the remixes, Wascal flips it for the double garage crew, while Stray goes all-out Jump-up jungle and Nuphlo churns it up for the Dubstep mans.

STUDIO ROCKERS
CD // £7.49

Studio Rockers’ in-house Dubstep/Nu Jazz fusioneers follow up 2009s debut eponymous debut album with ‘Hyper Nomads’ – 19 tracks of blazing horns and bilious dubstep bass. The trio of AndreEa (vocals), BarBie (trombone, MC, effects) and Xperimentalist (DJ, drums, effects) are pretty much the only live Dubstep band worth mentioning (unless you count the three Macbooks of Magnetic Man), and maybe the only live Dubstep band in existence. ‘Hyper Nomads’…

But, technically ‘East Harlem’ was written when Zach Condon was 17, so it’s actually an old song. THE SINGING SKIES

CD // £11.99

A lovely album of evolved alt.country from Singing Skies, the songwriting project of Sydney’s Kell Derrig-Hall. He might be from Oz, but this music is Americana, make no mistake, with a classy yet bleary-eyed Nashville vibe that really reminds us those recent Mickey Newbury reissues, and of course more modern standard-bearers likes Lambchop, Evan Dando and Whiskeytown. The songs are rooted in tradition, but buck convention and predictability: Derrig-Hall’s guitar…

NOMADIC KIDS REPUBLIC
CD // £7.49

Debut release of glacial and tender minimalism from Leif Folkvord of Grand Rapids, Michigan USA. Its an unavoidable cliche, but Leif’s sound is certainly immersive, the kind of blanketing ambient spaces and comfortingly crisp production which gently suspend the listener in a solipsistic sort of state. He slowly lulls us through the icy, melodic surfaces of ‘Glimpse’, to more Köner-esque field recordings on ‘Suddenly, Through The Obscuration’, pulsing glitch tones…

Anicca
DANCING WAYANG
LP // £14.49

Exhilarating, bewildering and shocking side from two infamous improvisors, Okkyung Lee (Cello), and Phil Minton (Voice). The LP is accompanied by liner notes from Christian Marclay who scribes a long list of adjectives only to finish “Words are powerless when it comes to describing what Okkyung Lee and Phil Minton are doing here.” and we’ve gotta agree with the man. He knows what he’s talking about. This record is bonkers…
THE GREG FOAT GROUP
Dark Is The Sun (12 Inch LP)
Jazzman
LP // £18.49

Jazzman present the highly endearing debut from British pianist/composer/arranger, Greg Foat. We could have been fooled into thinking tis was some vintage find, such is the accomplished virtue of these tracks. Greg deploys unusual instrumentation, including harpsichord, tubular bells and a 15 piece choir is a style reminding of, but not limited to, Serge Gainsbourg, and acknowledges his influences from Bruno Nicolai and Michel Legrand with nods to UK jazzmen…

RAIDEN
Beton Armé
OFFKEY
CD // £8.99

Wicked debut LP of brutalist D&B architecture from Offkey label head and notorious DJ/Producer, Radien. ‘Beton Armé’ follows nearly ten years of Raiden releases for labels such as Renegade Hardware and Position Chrome fusing the disciplines of Techno and D&B into an insoluble form. Located in Tallinn, Estonia, his sound is comparable with other Eastern European producers such as Limewax, Dissident (Kontext) or Current Value, but Raiden’s music is still…
EVESON
Wicked Dub / Peace
Liquid V
12″ // £5.99

The title says it all! Eveson lays down his best track since the lush ‘Numbers’, rolling out ruff & tuff breaks and wide, plunging bass but with a sweet atmospheric sensitivity on the outstanding ‘Wicked Dub’. Fliside, ‘Peace’ is a more standard liquid jungle roller.
TREX / VILLEM
Recipe Book Vol 1: Part 3
Ingredients Records
12″ // £6.49

Two wicked Junglist rollers taken from the excellent ‘Recipe Book Vol.1’ session. Nothing groundbreaking here, but both producers do their thing in style. Trex drops an old skool Dillinja-style roller anchored with massive Dread bass and swooping, wraithlike synths. Villem’s ‘Splinter In Your Mind’ configures friskier drum programming with bursting amen rolls and Neurofunked bass licks. Smart stuff for the steppers.

Rune Grammofon
DVD // £11.99

“This DVD gives a rare and unique insight into the live experience of one of Norway’s most prominent and long standing contemporary improv groups. Commisioned by the Henie Onstad Art Centre for its 40th anniversary in 2008, ”Light” can be seen as an interaction between the art centre’s enviroment and the musicians. Free collective improvising is one of the most demanding ways of making music: the pitfalls are many –…

The Hidden Tapes
Minimal Wave
LP // £19.99

Minimal Wave compile ten rare, unreleased and precious tracks from around the world circa ’79-’85 selected by Veronica Vasicka. ‘The Hidden tapes’ spans DIY synth music from Japan to Belgrade, from noisy new wave to strobing proto-Industrial dance music. The first side opens to ‘Care’ by SS-Say from Denmark, full of euphoric ’84 arpeggios and epic pop vox from Inge Shannon, before relocating to Yugoslavia for Oskarova Fobija’s pert synthpop…
FORD & LOPATIN (GAMES)
Channel Pressure
SOFTWARE
LP // £15.99

‘Channel Pressure’ is the debut LP from Ford & Lopatin, formerly-known-as Games (Daniel “Oneohtrix Point Never” Lopatin & Joel “Tiger City” Ford). Without a shadow of a doubt it’s one of the years defining records, a postmodern pop dazzler patching elements of discoid ’80s pop and jazz-funk fusion with early ’90s R&B in a lucidly fractal digital simulacra that sounds like an updated and oddly screwed version of classic Scritti…
KINDEST LINES
Covered in Dust
Wierd Records
LP // £13.49

**Sweet, slick retro-modern synth-pop from New York’s premier cold wave stable Wierd Records.** This might just be the most direct, accessible and open-hearted record yet to come out of the minimal synth revival – from the opening track, ‘Hazy Haze’ a lo-fi yet epic girl-group anthem that sounds like summat Phil Spector might’ve produced if his only tools were a mic and a couple of kit-built synthesizers. A couple of…

DESTROYER
Kaputt
Dead Oceans
CD // £9.99

Arriving with acclaim from Tiny Mix Tapes, Pitchfork and the BBC, the cult concern, Destroyer, delivers a potential classic referencing the ’80s pop of Scritti Politti, Roxy Music, Prefab Sprout and New Order. This is whimsical, subtly ambiguous pop music at its finest, full of lush, and ever-so-slightly off centre harmonies, dreamy vocals and incisive lyrics with a prime production polish. Impressive.
FUTURISK
Lonely Streets (Chris Carter / Prince Language Mixes)
Cititrax
LP + 3CD // £17.99

Minimal Wave offshoot, CitiTrax, presents four remakes of Futurisk’s Floridian electro by four of their biggest fans, Chris Carter, Prince Language, Complexxion and Tom Furse. Using the original stem tracks for ‘Lonely Streets’ recorded in 1982, the remixers were detailed with using analogue production methods in order to keep a faithful integrity to the original. So, it’s quite interesting to see how of each producer’s character shows through on their…
YOU
Time Code
Bureau B
LP // £12.99

Another blast of superlative Berlin School kosmische reissued for modern-day space cadets and those who missed it the first time around. You need only look at the sleeve of You’s Time Code – all mystic pyramids and spheres floating across airbrushed alien terrain – to perceive its relevance in the age of such new age revivalists as Oneohtrix, Stella OM Source and Dylan Ettinger. Recorded in 1982, using a hefty…

*Strictly Limited Marbled wax* NDATL cap an ace series with a previously unreleased Moodymann ‘Retouch’ of Alexander Robotnick’s ‘Problemes D’Amour’! An accompanying press release informs us that there’s “an Atkins diet of Miller music, held up by a Canadian Abacus”, which should be enough to trigger your inner Detroit geek, but that debonaire J.A.N re-do should already have you salivating. Don’t Miss!!!
MASSIMILIANO PAGLIARA
Focus For Infinity
Live at Robert Johnson
LP // £14.99

Debut album from the former Balihu and Meakusma contributor. Fans of the slow sound should be on this in an instant. Massimiliano has got the chug on lock, keeping the tempo around a sensually sub-110bpm over 13 tracky grooves intended for the connoisseurs and the steamiest points of the night. Fairly simple stuff, but very effective. Reminiscent of everything from Harald Grosskopf to Mark E.

He’s Alright (Mark E / Mode Mixes)
Far Out Recordings
12″ // £6.99

The fourth 12″ of Monster Disco Orchestra’s vinyl-only series features another remix from Mark E, and east London’s MODE. SIGHA
Sigha EP
Hotflush Recordings
12″ // £5.99

KMFH (KYLE HALL)
WO6K
WILD OATS
12″ // £8.99

*Hand-sprayed and stamped white label* Kyle Hall switches into filtered House and carnival rhythm mode for his latest Wild Oats. Face up, ‘Down!’ jams on a raw jacking vibe with boogie soul samples wrenched in ‘n out of the mix strutting 313 effect. Face down, ‘Xero’ is sexier, shaking with hypnotic Latin percussion and spiked with Detroit accented keys and wicked Moodymann style edits and breakdowns. Proper groove tools.
MARGARET DYGAS
Margaret Dygas
Perlon
2LP // £15.99

Following her widely acclaimed album for Power Shovel Audio, Margaret Dygas returns to Perlon with an impressive six track doublepack. Her unique Tech-House architectures are pensively minimal and full of surprising nuances like the tempered neo-classical keys which break the reflective surfaces of opener ‘Missing You Less’ or the almost out-of-time drums which stumble across ‘Country Way Of Life’. But most of all this eponymous entry is defined by lustrous,…
JONSSON/ALTER
Olidan
KONTRA
12″ // £7.99

Subtle and extended Nordic House excursions from Joel Alter and Henrik Jonsson aka Porn Sword Tobacco. Their first collaborative appearance features a fusion of languid cosmic disco vibes with gentle House rhythms and super spacious dubbing enhanced by the mastering from Andreas Tilliander. The dubbier and moodier of the two, ‘Olidan’ deploys stealthy synth drones from an abandoned synthesizer they found in the streets, applied to drowsy Krautrock-ish rhythms and…

Beauty & Life
MOS
12″ // £7.99

**Blue Marbled Vinyl** Detroit-indebted Dutch producer, Aroy Dee offers his first new material since 2009, including a deeper trippin’ Ra.H remix. Aroy’s seductiv original ‘Beauty’ swoons with romantic Motor City pads and arcing chords underlined by subtly deep Techno/House rhythms. Ra.H aka Morphosis gives an eerier, more alien makeover full of stray astro-jazz signals and a bulkier beat, before Aroy gazes out on the lush landscape of ‘Life’. TIP!
FLORIAN MULLER / CARLOS NILMMNS & IAN ELGEY
FD005
FUZZY DUCK
12″ // £5.99

Three deeper House tracks from Glasgow. A-side is occupied by Florian Muller’s KDJ-debted ‘Fusion Experiment #2’, a tidy piece of rolling keys, lopped disco licks and plump, squidgy bass. Carlos Nilmmns goes a cut deeper on the B-side with ‘Cielo (NYC)’, a downpitched Techno roll dedicated to the legendary club, while ‘La Derive La Nuit’ eases into a more sensual, synth-layered groove. Hand-stamped white label.

Collecting 19 awesome pre-1975 Cambodian rock classics. In the years before Pol Pot’s notoriously hardline and anti-Western Khmer Rouge regime altered the history of Cambodia forever, there was a flourishing, anarchic and vital rock scene centred in the capital Phnom Penh. Sadly some of the artists featured, notably Sinn Sisamouth “the Emperor of Khmer Music” and Ros Sereysothea “The Golden Voice of the Royal Capital” couldn’t escape the brutal regime…
