Hello,

‘R.I.P’ is the’ eagerly awaited new album from Actress, his second for Honest Jon’s. Conceptually inspired by Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’ and produced exclusively on hardware, it’s the sound of a producer moving further into the recesses of his skunked-out, symbiotic man-machine circuits in order to fire up your imagination and put so much other bland and prosaic sonics into stark relief. It’s a much less beat-driven affair than either ‘Hazyville’ or ‘Splazsh’, instead opting for an immersive trip through psychoactive, cascading arrangements and barely perceptible sonic shifts which, needless to say, hit all our buttons. Out now on Vinyl, CD, MP3 and FLAC – what you waiting for?

Pye Corner Audio’s ‘The Black Mills Tapes Volumes 1 & 2’, meanwhile, brims with exactly the sort of textured nuance and ghostly analogue vibes which only vinyl can really bring to life. Evoking the soundtracks of mid-’60s Doctor Who, half-remembered Giallo missions and the home-smoked ambient techniques of early Boards Of Canada, it’s one of the finest Radiophonic re-appropriations we’ve heard in recent years and comes to you on a lush double vinyl pressing courtesy of Type, with initial copies pressed up on transparent green and blue vinyl, if you’re fast.

The august Atom™ aka Uwe Schmidt makes a welcome return to Raster Noton this week with his Schubert-sampling ‘Winterreise’ album. We cannot overstate just how beautiful an album it is – his most substantial and evocative in years, enriched with a sense of romance and melancholy that’s at once classical and forwardly hopeful without ever coming across as conceited. It comes housed in typically lavish Raster packaging, and includes postcard prints of photographs by Schmidt inside.

And the record that’s really made our week? Francis Bebey’s ‘African Electronic Music 1975-1982’ – one of those completely unexpected but mindblowing sides that quietly enters your life only for you to soon realise it’ll be sticking with you for a long time. It’s quite possibly one of the most brilliant examples of plugged-in Pop from Africa you’ll ever encounter – using electronic keyboards, organs and drum machines in a way that’s true to his heritage. We urge you to check the samples and just wait for that ludicrously massive grin to appear.

For more design conscious sonic aesthetes, Steinbrüchel & Corey Allen’s ‘Seam’ is well recommended. Thirteen purified computer music and abstract, soundscaped compositions come housed in a gorgeous machine-stitched sleeve that looks like it took forever to put together, limited to just 400 copies. Anduin, meanwhile, have long impressed with their stylish, nocturnal brand of Lynchian ambience and their brand new ‘Stolen Years’ LP for SMTG is a an exquisitely executed case in point. Fans of Kreng, Demdike Stare, The Haxan Cloak or Bohren and the Club Of Gore, you’ve been warned!

With summer looming, it’s time to get the mix CDs stockpiled for road trips, garden raves and the like, and we can’t recommend Levon Vincent’s Fabric mix any higher. It’s notable not only for the healthy number of his own exclusive productions, and those of his NYC inner circle – Joey Anderson, Anthony Parasole, DJ Qu etc – but also because it’s the first time he’s committed a mix to a commercially available format, and a digital one at that!

Quality shorter formats are in plentiful supply this week. Atop them all is Mika Vainio’s swaggering, rugged, filthy 7″s of Industro-Bashment on ‘Rasputin 3000’ for Austria’s Comfortzone, and there’s also super crisp and forward Bass moves from Vainio’s fellow Finns, Desto and Teeth, on a wicked 2-step-R&B-Footwork flex for their freshly minted Signal Life label, and a cracking Anstam 12″ for 50 Weapons to quench your bass-ic needs.

We’re spoilt for choice on the House and Techno front, too. The Soundhack issue of his Autorepeat remix and the cracking ‘Disco Crash’ is an absolute must, while Kowton really impresses with two mighty tracks for Peverelist’s Livity Sound white label series. Elgato returns on Hessle Audio with a super restrained and idiosyncratic roller, and Vessel serves Left Blank one of their best yet; three tracks of Actress/Andy Stott-like functions on the ‘Standard’ EP. And definitely check for L-Vis 1990’s highly effective ‘Club Constructions Vol.1’ on Night Slugs – if his album didn’t quite thrill you, this will!

And honorary mentions go to Maria Minerva & Ajukaja’s ‘Nii Hea’ – a 10″ pressing of left-fielding Deep House Pop on the fantastically-titled Porridge Bullet label, and don’t miss the seminal UK Roots reissue of ‘Only Jah Worthy’ by Rasheda if you know what’s good!

Also out this week, new releases and reissues from Beaumont, Cupp Cave, David Sylvian, Ron Hardy, original Prince cohort Andre Cymone, Wolfgang Voigt and Jorg Burger’s new collaborative Mohn project, Boo WIlliams, Trus’me remixed by Dettmann and Nodge, Eglo, Keith Hudson, Smog, Doom & Ghostface Killah, Room 40, Earth, Philip Cohran, plus upcoming releases from oOoOO, Motion Sickness of Time Travel, Lone and The Hundred In The Hands (with remixes from Andy Stott, patten and JD Twitch) available to pre-order now.

Lastly – we now have a limited number of tickets available on sale for Julia Holter’s intimate Manchester show in June, capacity is just for 100 people so if you’d like to go, grab one now.

Have yourselves a fabulous week…

Peace! nekkers..xx

Albums of the Week

PYE CORNER AUDIO
The Black Mill Tapes Volumes 1&2
ELECTRONIC
Type Recordings
2LP // £16.99

*Limited to an edition of 700 for the world, initial copies come on transparent green and blue vinyl – while stocks last* The furtive Radiophonic modifications of Pye Corner Audio have been sorely overlooked by much of the current electronics scene – despite a contribution to the Ghost Box Study Series of 7″s, a cassette release for the excellent Further Records, and a number of self-released gems. Type strive to redress that imbalance with a double LP compilation of his deliciously damaged Black Mill Tapes volumes 1 & 2, which were originally issued on his eponymous digital imprint. There are rumours that in another life he was an engineer to the stars, and while that can’t be verified, there’s certainly an air of expertise about this bumper set of 21 productions. Given a new lease of life on vinyl, they consume the senses with a cool-handed grasp of cinematic narration and mystical analogue production values at once evoking the soundtracks of mid-’60s Doctor Who, half-remembered Giallo missions and the home-smoked ambient techniques of early Boards Of Canada. There’s also an underlying propulsion that pushes this collection forward, just perfect for narrowed-eye night drives (you’ll want to listen to this alone; put a turntable on the passenger seat); learned and low slung rhythms which almost subliminally motor forward while faded melodies intimate a deeply layered personality which reveals new secrets with every listen. As anyone who knows this sound will cosign: it’s an all too often imitated and hackneyed style. But we can sincerely say, this one really is a little bit special.

ACTRESS
R.I.P
ELECTRONIC
Honest Jon’s Records
2LP // £11.99

Two years since ‘Splazsh’ topped a stack of annual polls, Actress presents his 3rd, and most coherent album, ‘R.I.P’ – his 2nd for Honest Jon’s. Despite being a vital cog in the machinery of underground UK dance and electronics since at least 2004 (when he released his ‘No Tricks’ debut), it’s fair to say that it’s only in the last few years he’s made the shift from cult concern to acknowledged auteur of some repute. His work with Damon Albarn’s DRC Music, beside a legendary DJ set at Sonar and killer remixes of Shangaan Electro, Panda Bear and Radiohead all certify the fact; so expectations are no doubt set high for ‘R.I.P’. Produced exclusively on hardware and inspired by Milton’s classic poem ‘Paradise Lost’, he’s arranged his most labyrinthine, esoteric release to date; a timeless set of 15 tracks traversing crystallized radiophonics and subterranean Techno with a psychedelic sideswipe that leaves us dazed and beguiled. By assimilating machine-like characteristics – his notions of “seeping yourself liquid into the machinery” and “I’m just an instrument, I’m completely dead when I write” – he’s become an interpreter, a symbiotic conduit of semi-lucid visions into the interzone whose revelations contain the potential to manipulate your consciousness in magical ways compared to the prosaic intentions of so much bland and overwrought electronic music out there. The newfound clarity and fluid narration of ‘R.I.P.’ makes this the most intriguing chapter in the Actress saga so far – an unmissable experience.

FRANCIS BEBEY
African Electronic Music 1975-1982
WORLD
BORN BAD RECORDS
2LP // £17.99

**Mindblowing electronic productions and songcraft from Africa-via-Paris circa 1975-1982!** Cameroonian musician and cultural polymath Francis Bebey is a bona fide legend of 20th century African music, art and literature. He introduced the world at large to Manu Dibango and had a stack of hits in the French-speaking African world, but it’s his little known work with electronic keyboards, organs and drum machines which is staggeringly revealed here. Across 14 tracks, Francis cooks up a minimal but richly layered and heady concoction of frothy, improvised melodies, body-rippling rhythms and deeply endearing vocals surely ranking as some of Africa’s greatest contributions to the history of electronic music. From the tinkling marimbas and offset bass hits of ‘New Track’ inwards, we’re witnessing a unique musical manifesto in creation, at once reflecting the phased reps of Steve Reich and the burgeoning minimal wave experiments of that era yet with an instinctive freshness and lightness of the rarest, earthly substance. More than once you’ll need to pinch yourself to realise what you’re hearing, and by the time you’ve reached the percolating ‘Coffee Cola Song’ you’ll really need to take a moment aside; we pretty much did! We’ve no need to go on, just check the samples and catch your jaw. Hugely recommended!

ATOM TM
Winterreise
ELECTRONIC
Raster Noton
CD // £12.99

At this point in his career, and with more pseudonyms then anyone can be rightly expected to keep track of, you’d be forgiven for being a bit blasé about the work of Uwe Schmidt. Gone are the days back in the late 90’s and early noughties when pretty much every month saw a new Scmidt alter ego appear on his own Rather Interesting imprint, eventually leading to huge commercial success under the Senor Coconut guise and headline appearances at numerous music festivals. The output started to slow down, restricted to a number of new recordings and collaborations for various labels, as well as older ambient works reissued by Fax and Sahko, and ACID tracks revived by Logistic – before his most substantial release as Atom ™, ‘Liedgut’, appeared on the Raster Noton label a couple of years ago. Substantial not so much in length (the album clocked in at 35 minutes) – but more in its coherence and intention, returning to a conceptual recording process which has always found Schmidt producing his finest work. “Winterreise” is a follow-up of sorts, also for Raster Noton, this time clocking in at just under an hour and producing, without doubt, Schmidt’s most beautiful material in years. Conceptually, both Raster albums connect with the work of Schubert (there are, apparently, fragments, notes, chord samples used sparingly through the recordings), with the album serving as a soundtrack to a series of photographs taken by Schmidt in 2010 during a tour of Europe (postcards of which are included inside the typically lavish Raster packaging). In the lastest issue of The Wire, Schmidt says of these recordings: “…i realised that all the textures i was making for the album had a romantic feeling…heavy and melancholy, but not sad…I realised it’s because I used that millisecond of Schubert, and it turned into an oscillator for a texture – and I found that very interesting”. The result is an almost continuous series of tracks that contain many Atom Heart signatures – tricky, complex production, recurring motifs, a pristine aesthetic – but never at the expense of the pervading atmosphere. The end result is genuinely absorbing and sublime, creating a mysterious trip through re-contextualised classicism and ambience that somehow manages never to sound forced. It tugs at your heartstrings without ever resorting to any obvious or self-indulgent arrangements, instead utilising a kind of semi-opaque compositinal style that has you lost in a haze of nostalgia before its end, leaving you with little recollection of how you got there. Beautiful music – a real treat for longtime Atom Heart fans and newcomers alike.

STEINBRUCHEL + CORY ALLEN
Seam
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
QUIET DESIGN
CD // £11.99

**Edition of 400 copies housed in absolutely stunning machine stitched, offset printed sleeves** Contemplative, careful and otherworldly meeting of two sound artists; Austin’s Corey Allen and Zürich-based (Ralph) Steinbrüchel. Synchronizing highly considered elements of technology, design and sonic fidelity true to both artist’s oeuvres, ‘Seam’ took over a year of file exchanges and intensive, process driven work to integrate their individual approaches to sound craft and design. The results take shape as 13 tracks – six “proper” compositions linked by seven threads – reflected in the design and production of the physical packaging which is based on a system that corresponds with the track order and each artist’s contribution to the creation of the compositions. They take form as abstract soundscapes, tones and gaseous harmonic compositions, textured with fragmented digital dust and sporadic rhythms which movie which feel almost tantalisingly free of human interaction. Gorgeous music in a gorgeous package – well worthy of your attention.

LEVON VINCENT
fabric 63: Levon Vincent
TECHNO / HOUSE
Fabric Worldwide
CD // £9.99

House music’s most resolute standard bearer has assembled a prime selection of 15 cuts from his New York-orbiting inner circle for Fabric’s 63rd mix. After a decade of studious production and practice, Levon has established himself as one of the most respected artists in his arena. An uncompromising (bordering on neurotic) approach to analog values – from the first note or beat to the mastering process – coupled with innate respect for dance music and pure, tactile sonic fidelities, have made his productions, labels (Novel Sound, and Deconstruct with Anthony Parasole) and DJ sets a benchmark for heavyweight House music. Peppered with no less than seven of his impeccable tracks, his 1st commercially available mix also features music by like-minded producers rooted in New York’s House scene, from relative newcomer Joey Anderson with his tentative opening salvo ‘Earth Calls’ and the locked-in shuffle of ‘Hyrdrine’, to Sequencias label head JM De Frias’ Salsa-tripper ‘Intrinsic Motivation’, to DJ Qu and his hypnotic churner ‘Times Like This’, and two from Fred P’s Black Jazz Consortium ‘Blacklight’ and ‘Far Away’, plus Anthony Parasole’s burly ‘Tyson’. But the stars of the mix are Vincent’s own productions, the indomitable ‘Double Jointed Sex Freak II’, and a ruck of unreleased ish like the exquisite ‘Rainstorm II’, the pensive ‘Stereo Systems’ and the magnificent ‘Fear’. But most crucially, it’s the reserved pacing, deft programming and sensually dark, yet life-affirming vibe which pumps deep through this mix that makes it such an essential listen for any self-respecting House heads.

ANDUIN
STOLEN YEARS
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
SMTG
LP // £16.99

An incredibly stylish, creepy album of nocturnal, Lynchian jazz and dread-infused electronics from Richmond, VA’s Jonathan Lee aka Anduin. Lee has worked with Svarte Greiner and Jasper TX in the past, and certainly this album would sound right at home on the Miasmah label, such is its exquisite moodiness and attention to ambient detail. It’s beautifully composed and executed, with deep synth drones underscoring mournful sax lines right out of the Badalamenti/Bohren school of impending doom; there are excursions too into a kind of hollowed-out ambient techno on ‘The Transformation Of Substance’ and rain-slicked Vangelis-ism on heart-stopping finisher ‘Irene’. It’s terrific stuff, with an immediacy that this genre so often lacks, recommended not only to fans of Kreng, Bohren and the like, but those too who can’t get enough of the cinematic darkness of Demdike Stare and The Haxan Cloak.

Singles of the Week

MIKA VAINIO
Rasputin 3000
ELECTRONIC
COMFORTZONE
7″ // £6.99

**This release will ship from April 21st – a special release for Record Store Day** This one-time limited edition of 750 copies comes from Austria’s Comfortzone label and catches Mika Vainio in swaggering backroom dancefloor mode again for a 2nd, Jukebox-styled 7″. A-side is a corrosive, killer slice of Industro-Bashment called ‘Rasputin 3000’, all skeletal rhythmic swagger and elemental distortion. B-side features an even more stripped down and haunted number called ‘Devil Arrives To Finspång’. Nobody does this thing quite like Vainio – miss out at your peril!

TEETH / DESTO
Vibrate / Remember
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
SIGNAL LIFE
12″ // £6.99

**Dope black & white picture sleeve**Two of Finland’s premier ‘step producers deliver a track-a-piece on their freshly minted Signal Life label. Teeth takes pole position with the body-carving flex of ‘Vibrate’. Aerodynamic, bare-boned drums and intuitively offset bass sync with sparse chords and fibrillating vocals for a tensile R&B-cum-Footwork-cum-2-step flex working the niche between body-rolling sensuality and swingers’ gratification. Desto drops ‘Remember’ on the flip. Working with a similarly pared-down palette, he commands pointillist 808s and escalating synth pitches with a body-tightening bounce built to burn up the ‘floor. Badass, both of ’em!

SOUNDHACK
Sound Sampler Vol 1.5
DISCO / EDITS / FUNK
SOUNDSAMPLER
12″ // £9.99

Ohhhh, hot damn! Soundhack here reissues his super-rare 2006 remix of Auto-Repeat’s ‘Auto Disco! Gotta admit, I missed out on this the first time around so it’s a blessing to see this in the piles this week, especially when it comes backed with his deadly take on the notorious Chi-House template ‘Disco Crash’! Yep, lots of exclamation marks! The ‘Auto Disco’ remix is a masterclass in filigree editing as only Frank Timm can, while there’s also a fuzzed-up ‘Krachapella’ for those who need it, and we certainly hope to hear the more clued-up jocks rinsing ‘Disco Crash’ in the mix next time we’re out on them tiles. Big ol’ TIP!

ANSTAM
First Sprout EP
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
50 WEAPONS
12″ // £7.99

New three-tracker from Anstam on Modeselektor’s 50Weapons. ‘Intuit”s sickly, pitch-bent synth tones and stripped percussion hits soon give way to lurching vamps – it’s serious, abstract digi-rave action that’ll sound boss in the mix, while’ Feed The Pig”s tumbling beats and woozy electronics fall between the styles of Samiyam and Zomby, and ‘Whiskey’ dispenses with drums entirely for a comedown of the most agreeably eye-reddening, brain-aching variety. Probably this producer’s boldest, most zonked-out offering yet.

MARIA MINERVA & AJUKAJA
Nii Hea
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
PORRIDGE BULLET
10″ // £9.99

Celestial bedroom singer/songwriter Maria Minerva meets fellow Estonian producer Raul Saaremets aka Ajukaja on a sumptuous leftfield Deep House dish. Filtered Billie Jean-like bassline swoons and rumbles under shaded keys and blunted drums while Minerva coos in her native language. Instrumental on the flip. *POP Fact alert* – Ajukaja runs Tallinn’s Mutant Disco parties which Maria acknowledges as a big influence on her sound. Limited copies only.

KOWTON
More Games / Jam01
TECHNO / HOUSE
LIVITY SOUND
12″ // £6.99

4th 12″ on Peverlist’s Livity Sound White label series. Kowton’s firmly in control on this one, coming off like Jam City doing raw New York with slashing strings, hulking subs and grazing percussion on the A-side, and again the haughty, Levon Vincent-styled power house grind of the B-side. Not to be missed; trust!

RASHEDA
Only Jah Worthy
DUB / REGGAE
RASHEDA LIONNESS MUSIC
12″ // £6.99

Reissue of seminal, definitive UK Roots plate starring the mellifluous Sister Rasheda on productions by Jah Shaka Music’s The Disciples. Originally released in 1992 ‘Only Jah Worthy’ balances Rasheda’s poignant, spiritual vocal against rippling drums, real and synthesized, with flashing stabs and finely tuned bass excitement. Flipside’s ‘Give Jah Praise’ is more driving, under pressure of ricocheting snares and stepping subs, but again with those celestial vocals and sweetened pipes. Both dubs are immense, too. Not to be missed!

L-VIS 1990
Club Constructions Vol. 1
TECHNO / HOUSE
Night Slugs
12″ // £5.99

After his posh disco LP ‘Neon Dreams’ for PMR, L-Vis gets down and dirty again with ‘Club Constructions Volume 1’ for Night Slugs. Ruggedly stripped down and spiked with the purest dancefloor juice, these five tracks look to classic Chicago templates for inspiration, much in the same way Bok Bok did with Tom Trago on ‘Night Voyage Too Kit’. Between the relentless spank of ‘Workout’, the Poindexter-esque banger ‘Video Drone’, ‘Rubber Crash’s metallic percolations and the fibrillating funk of ‘Hard Drive’ or ‘Girl Clap’, this is Class A dancefloor material through and through.

VESSEL
Standard EP
ELECTRONIC
LEFT BLANK
12″ // £6.99

Throwing Snow and Patrick Hanrahan’s Left_Blank greenhouse bears another delicious fruit from Vessel, dropping his 2nd solo EP proper ahead of a keenly anticipated debut album for Tri Angle. Operating somewhere between the cloudy headspaces of Andy Stott, Hype Williams and Actress, the ‘Standard’ EP coolly zig-zags between blunted House haunted with Drexciyan echoes on the downslow butt-thumper ‘Standard’, to uptempo Detroit techniques with eyes-down appeal on ‘Merge’, before the dislocated, destabilized patterns of ‘Zero’ fray into Radiophonic ether with a raw hypnotic intuition. Next to Samoyed, it’s the closest we’ve heard anyone come to the hallowed cosmic hotbox and post-Techno interzone that Actress first imagined, and therefore recommended.

ELGATO
Zone / Luv Zombie
TECHNO / HOUSE
HESSLE AUDIO
12″ // £5.99

Elgato heads up a second 12″ of stripped, tracky idiosyncracies for Hessle Audio. The mood here is hushed and even more held-back, when compared with his killer debut. A-side the prowling minimalism of ‘Zone’ teases the ‘floor with slippery, hypnotic bleeps and woozy bass pressure synced with glinting hi-hats to guide yer glide. B-side ‘Luv Zombie’ again uses a paucity of well-picked elements with that heightened sense of delayed gratification; swirling chords, tucked-in micro swing rhythms and a trapped vocal intonation create a dreamlike atmosphere before sumptuous subs finally show up to accentuate the pendulous effect. Pure, instinctive grooves for those that know.

INNER SURFACE MUSIC
12″ // £6.49

Finely crafted Dub Techno pressure from Manchester-based producer, Tom Dicicco. Absorbing strong influence from the Basic Channel-to-Levon Vincent axis, Tom assimilates that sound with muscular aplomb. It’s evident in the wall-quaking bass width and heads-down, tunnelling atmospheres of ‘Exit’, in the infinite dub chord delays of ‘Vent’ and on the ‘M5’-meets-‘Double Jointed Sex Fiend’ vibes of ‘High Ground’.

GIFTED & BLESSED PRESENTS: THE ABSTRACT EYE
GB Presents: The Abstract Eye
Eglo Records
12″ // £6.99

LA’s GB perfectly caters to Eglo’s style with three exceptional cuts of deepest machine soul & body music. It’s a swift follow-up to his recent ace for Dublin’s All City posse, and crafted with the same unerring approach to analogue fidelities. It’s not quite House, or Electro, or Boogie, or whatever you want to call it, but it is supremely funky and oozes pure groove. A-side there’s the squirmy Drexciyan…
CARACAL
Isle Brevelle EP
Black Acre
12″ // £5.99

Emerging from a vacuum of background info, Caracal blesses Black Acre with four tracks of squashed, stoned and swampy downbeats. Lodging his sound in the creases between Andy Stott, DJ Screw and Downliners Sekt, ‘Elements’ shuffles in with a militant 808 bounce dripping dark purple juice all o’er the floor while ‘De Niro’ bolts slow post-industrial drums to gasping, knackered Hip Hop voices to soundtrack the darkest doings of a…
BEAUMONT
Never Love Me EP
Hotflush Recordings
12″ // £5.99

Beaumont follows up his outstanding debut for the Boxcutter-affiliated Kinnego Records with a ruder, more chiselled single on Hot Flush. The elegance of ‘Blush Response’ is still there on the ‘Never Love Me’ EP, but now steeled with a discernibly heavier club edge. Finding a handsome poise between ‘Cocktail’ soundtrack-era Tangerine Dream and modern hyperBass Boogie, the title track sets off thrilling synth flares and vocoders over tuff kick/snare syncopation…
CUPP CAVE
Retina Waves
Ramp Recordings
LP // £8.99

Belgian beatsmith Cupp Cave returns on this bumper full-length for the very on-form Ramp label, and shows the jaw-dropping depth of his style across nine jump-cut, overdriven tunes. Coming across like a malformed hybrid of the Flying Lotus-patented Brainfeeder sound and the fuzzy ‘knackered house’ of Andy Stott, Cupp Cave’s sound is something of a revelation. Sure, scuzzing up beats is nothing new (ask Dem Hunger) but the refined quality…
DUKE SLAMMER
Spandex / VHS Distress
BONUS7
7″ // £6.99

**Transparent Vinyl** Duke Slammer gives up his fruitiest and, by turns, best single so far on the Bonus7 rounds. Played with straight face, ‘Spandex’ burns chromed-out chords and squelchy P-funk bass on a deft Boogie flex for anyone scanning that fine niche between Dam-Funk and vintage porn soundtracks. Flipside ‘VHS Distress’ re-calibrates to a woozier sort of downbeat and salacious synth soul.
MONTGOMERY CLUNK
Mondegreen
Error Broadcast
12″ // £7.99

**Includes digital download voucher redeemable from the label** Lazer-shotting Hypercrunk from Bucharest, Romania. Check for the footworked trance turbulence of ‘Enter The Wardrobe’ and the cartoonish ‘Muvies’. “His EP Mondegreen is the essence of two years research in bass music. Clunk delivers a minimal version of maximalism, combining crackpot neon melodies with complex and well defined beat patterns. Mondegreen is unmistakable Montgomery Clunk, with its expertly entwined textures and solitary…

SIGNAL LIFE
12″ // £6.99

**Dope black & white picture sleeve**Two of Finland’s premier ‘step producers deliver a track-a-piece on their freshly minted Signal Life label. Teeth takes pole position with the body-carving flex of ‘Vibrate’. Aerodynamic, bare-boned drums and intuitively offset bass sync with sparse chords and fibrillating vocals for a tensile R&B-cum-Footwork-cum-2-step flex working the niche between body-rolling sensuality and swingers’ gratification. Desto drops ‘Remember’ on the flip. Working with a similarly pared-down…
ANSTAM
First Sprout EP

Probably this producer’s…
KAIJU
Close Break / Belcanto
Osiris Music UK
12″ // £5.99

High-pressure, atmosheric halfstep songcraft on Kryptic Minds’ label. ‘Close Break’ fits a hushed male vocal to tectonic subbass shifts and sparing drums for the darkside set. B-side ‘Belcanto’ is equally reduced, but this time with a sampled sliver of ethereal female vocals contrasting with the squirming bass torque and more “neuro” stabs.
SIRIUSMO
Dr. Beak’s Rantanplant
Monkeytown Records
12″ // £7.99

Monkey Town’s oddest character drops three joints of lairy, funked-up and squashed madness on his first release since last 2011’s epic ‘Pearls & Embarrassments’ compilation and his debut Lp ‘Mosaik’. That title track is like a jaunty adjunct to Altered Natives’ brokebeat flex, informed by more eccentric electronic tastes and full of deviant, dissonant synth melody. ‘Doctor Beak’ has the deftly tucked swivel of Dutch bubbling sounds, but again with…

Melancholy Dreams
DVA MUSIC
12″ // £6.49

DVA Music have the honour of releasing the deeply sophisticated debut from 19 year East Londoner Joss Ryan. Essentially Grime gone hyper-posh, on ‘Melancholy Dreams’ Ryan leavens the restless, swingeing energy of ‘ardcore East sounds with a plush palette of strings, and curvacious electronics which fits so neatly with the DVA Music ethos. From the opening strings and spidery synths of the title track, you can feel this is kinda…

2LP + CD // £22.99

**Includes expanded 13-track CD copy** Clubroot closes his album triptych with the cinematic ‘III – MMXII’. As with its predecessors, the mood is anguished, desolate, hankering for that certain something which Burial isolated so acutely. Over two discs and eight tracks the narrative curves from widescreen, string-heavy instrumentals (‘Ennio’s Eden’), to emo Dubstep (‘Left-Hand Path’), and (sub)urbane bounce (‘Lurking In The Shadows’), with highlights occurring on the twitching halfstep D&B…

Operating somewhere between the cloudy headspaces of Andy Stott, Hype Williams and Actress, the ‘Standard’ EP coolly zig-zags between blunted House haunted with Drexciyan echoes on the downslow butt-thumper ‘Standard’, to uptempo Detroit techniques with eyes-down appeal on ‘Merge’, before the…

New EP on Blueprint from sporadic production unit Lakker, aka Ian McDonnell and Dara Smith. ‘BKRO’ is an arresting opener, its strict beat – at first a kind of compressed schaffel – anchoring nihilistic bunker techno bleeps and ghostly howls on the periphery. ‘ED’ is more minimal, its hefty warehouse chords on a dubbier flex, while ‘Arc’ nods to the clotted industrial abstractions of recent Andy Stott, and ‘Evening Lemon’…

Preset / Scum
CROOKED MAN
12″ // £6.99

First in a series of 4 x 12″s pressed on 180g wax loaded with some highly effective House music. Frontside is a layered, deep-tunnelling groover with lilting, hypnotic percussive elements for the Four Tet heads; flipside’s ‘Scum’ is more swinging, dubbed out with wavey pop vox and druggy synth slides almost guaranteed to do the trick.
TRUS’ME
Sweetmother (Marcel Dettman Mix) / Good God (Norman Nodge Mix)
PRIME NUMBERS
12″ // £6.99

The long-touted Norman Nodge & Marcel Dettmann remixes of Trus’me finally materialise. Frontside Marcel Dettmann siphons the soul from ‘Sweetmother’ (taken from Trus’me’s ‘Im The Red’ LP) and replaces it with a hypnotic bass throb and stereo-swirling congas for locked-in groovers. Flipside Norman Nodge dubs ‘Good God’ (from the ‘$tilnocheck?’ 12″), leaving only a watery trace of the original hovering over wide bass and hollowed out drums.
FRANCESCO BAUDAZZI (OBTANE / ZOOLOFT)
The Black Nobility Of Venice And Genoa
Surface Records
12″ // £6.49

Francesco Baudazzi – best known as Obtane – makes his Surface Records debut with four tracks revealing his more unstable and experimental productions. To date his darkly sleek and electro-acoustically spacious grooves have appeared on his own Zooloft label, Synewave and Stroboscopiuc Artefacts, among others, but they’ve rarely sounded as disturbed or emotive as on this platter. A-side we find the roiling, acid-bitten synths of ‘C.A.M.E.A.’ dancing around a submerged…
VIOLETSHAPED
The Great Mother Down The Stairs
Violet Poison
12″ // £7.99

**Transparent Vinyl** Heavy Industrial Techno stomps from these well known producers working incognito. Frontside ‘Introduction To Evil’ sets the scene with crushed bleeps and bilious acid bass, while ‘The Oven’ applies gloomy-as-owt dungeon atmospheres to lamping 4/4 kicks and caustic noise. Flipside ‘A Skull In The Cellar’ tills a sodden rut of clenched and stoic Industrial throbs sounding like Blawan’s darkest nightmares. RIYL Mondkopf, Ancient Methods, Tommy Four Seven, Gesaffelstein….
POWELL / KARL O’CONNOR (REGIS)
The Ongoing Significance Of Steel And Flesh
DIAGONAL
12″ // £7.99

*Second edition in plain sleeve with insert* Diagonal, a new label from London demands your attention with three KILLER bare-boned rhythm tracks by label head Powell, backed with a superb Karl O’Connor (Regis) remix. Powell’s original tracks are a masterful reduction and consolidation of ideas studied from the likes of Nitzer Ebb, Suicide and Mika Vainio, matching their rockabilly attitude with the kind of dry, technoid funk exercised by Raime…
AD/S / SIGHA / VENTRESS
Transversal (Sigha / Ventress Mixes)
AVIAN
12″ // £6.99

**Black label, black sleeve including insert** Grungy, forcefully cosmic Techno beasts from anonymous producers, backed with ace remixes from Sigha and Ventress. ‘Transversal’ tunnels home in proper subterranean style across the A-side: heavyweight soap-in-a-sock kickdrums will leave internal bruising while the stealthy synthline drone bides its time with devilish restraint for deep impact. Flipside Sigha continues to forge a deadly form of stoic funk with a tightly wound, Hood-esque remix,…
NYRA / SKUDGE
Uni 10 EP (Skudge Remix)
Elastic Dreams
12″ // £5.99

Very smart and classically-informed Dub Techno from Bristol’s Elastic Dreams imprint. On their 3rd 12″ they introduce Sheffield-based Ryan Davis aka Nyra with the powerful ‘UNO 10’ and subtly shifty ‘So So Such’ approaching the hallowed sound of Substance & Vainqueur. Skudge contribute a more stripped down and condensed remix of ‘UNO 10’.
ZEBRA MONO / DJ SOTOFETT
Zona / Tangg Ant (DJ Sotofett & Fit Mix)
LATON
12″ // £8.99

Wickedly screwy Acid Techno jax from DJ Sotofett for Pomassl’s Laton label outta Austria. Apparently Zebra Mono’s ‘Zone’ was recorded at Laton studios in Vienna, 2002, before Sotofett rediscovered and re-edited it in 2012. The result is five minutes of raw, moody and jacking House with wild, cut-up stereo-field fluctuations. Meanwhile on the flipside DJ Sotofett links with Aaron Siegel of Detroid’s FIT Sound to cut up an archival bit…
FELIX LENFERINK
Bouree
Fourth Wave
12″ // £6.99

Felix Lenferink joins Ramp’s Fourth Wave subset with a cool, swinging pair of House bumps. With this debut release he joins the his fellow Dutchmen Martyn, 2562/AMUS and label mate Presk to push a cleanly contoured yet somehow dirty sorta funk that pushes all the right buttons. His ‘First Bouree’ nudges a loosely swung reduction of aerated chords and whisked percussion urging hips and shoulders to his agenda, while ‘Second…
SPECIAL REQUEST
Lolita (Warehouse Mix) / Alone
SPECIAL REQUEST
12″ // £7.99

Rogue white label inspired by UK warehouse and pirate radio vibes. Frontside’s a mean fusion of swinging Funky House and burning darkside Techno menace somewhere between Paul Woolford and old skool Joey Beltram. On the other side it’s a ruffed-up Breakbeat ‘ardcore session updating old skool samples with a laptop sensibility.
GIORGIO LUCERI
Eternamente EP
MATHEMATICS
12″ // £8.99

Fruity Italian Piano House with Horror Disco elements, fresh in from another new Mathematics character. Giorgio Luceri has previously released a 12″ and a couple of digital singles for On The Prowl and Seven Music. The ‘Eternamente’ EP is surely his highest profile release to date. A-side ‘Les Verres Du Bar’ is loaded with Afro-cosmic drum rolls, chants and spooky organs for that late ’80s Giallo Disco mission effect, while…
RECONDITE
On Acid
Absurd Recordings
2×12″ // £16.99

Proper moody acid from the mysterious fella behind Plangent records, backed with ace Tin Man and Scuba remixes. A-side starts out slow and low with the haunted 100bpm bump ‘n flex of ‘Petrichor’ and the Analord-esque ‘Tie In’. B-side ‘Felicity’ solemnly shuffles up to a sparse 120bpm dark Haus groove and Tin Man transforms ‘Petrichor’ into a svelte, upbuilding Acid House dream. On the 2nd disc Recondite’s back in action…
SETH YENDER
Bring Me Joy
BERETTA MUSIC
12″ // £8.99

Beretta strike out a chords-driven, Detroit-inspired chunk from the Motor City’s Seth Yender, backed with a fine Reference remix. Informed by a love of Stacey Pullen, Derrick May, Carl Craig, ‘Bring Me Joy’ is built with a timeless appeal for big warehouses and the like, but with enough subtlety to satisfy keener ears. Flipside, Reference aka Detroit’s Luke Hess & Brain Kage lend a skippier, dubbier remix, next to Seth’s…
SLOWBURN
The Hustle
AUSTERE RECORDINGS
12″ // £6.99

**Limited edition of 300** Raw but finely crafted Deep House from Dublin-based production duo. Reel classy stuff from start to finish, from the woozy synth chords and Ron Trent-like machine syncopation of the title track, to the hypnotising and Bodycode-like shuffle of ‘Do It’ and the hip-slipping Toms and Derrick May-on-Mogadon vibes of ‘From Another Angle’.
AZYMUTH
To Nessa (Zed Bias / Maddslinky Mixes)
Far Out Recordings
12″ // £8.99

**Hand-numbered edition of 350 housed in sealed poly bag** Pioneering UK underground veteran Zed Bias drops three infectious remixes of tracks from Azymuth’s ‘Aurora’ album. In Maddslinky mode he gets frisky with the edits on a 140bpm re-chop of ‘Ta Nessa Ainda Bicho?’ recycling choice phrases and drums into a proper loose and juicy Latin Garage stormer, contrasting neatly with a sexier ‘Slow Down’ version hinging on Ivan Mamao Contis’…
ECHO 106
Broken Hihat Machine EP
MATHEMATICS
12″ // £9.49

Tracky, man-machine-made psych-House and Electro jams from Swiss producer, Echo 106. Chances are, Mathematics followers (Mathematicians?) might have copped a few of his tracks on ‘Music From Mathematics Vol.7′, but no worries if you didn’t, ’cause this is a cool introduction to his sound. A-side the rugged rhythms and tweaky FX of ‘Broken Hihat Machine’ and ‘Copy Ins Del’ sound like psilocybic Steve Poindexter grooves, while flipside’s ‘From Brunnen To…

MATI ZUNDEL
Amazonico Gravitante
ZZK Records
2LP // £14.99

“Raised on rhythms of the Argentinian backwoods, Matias Zundel dips his dance tracks in country folk gold where chacareras, huaynos, and vidalas two step with jungle and electronica. Shaman chant and charango guitar loops are the backbone of Lagartijeando’s signature style. Native voices are the backbeat to percussion and bass tracks with organ melodies combining cumbia and psychedelic noise. Songs give deference to ritual and maintain respect for tradition while…
