Hello,

Andy Stott’s return to the fray on ‘Passed Me By’ is, for us, one of the year’s defining post-everything records. He’s been off the release radar for over 12 months now, but it was time well spent, reconfiguring his sound with an intensely pressurised, dense and individual intent. There’s few artists in this scene who can pull off this syzygy of styles and make it work, but with this record Stott proves he’s in that rare class. Whatever kind of music you’re into – give it a listen and decide for yourselves.

Edition Mego’s Spectrum Spools offshoot offers its next batch of contemporary Kosmische curated by Emeralds’ John Elliott with a dazzling side from Mist aka John Elliott himself alongside Radio People’s Sam Goldberg. Together they conjure gleaming utopian vistas full of harmonic heartbursts and sheer analogue beauty recalling precedents from Ash Ra Tempel to Carl Craig in the most sincere manner. Also out on Spectrum Spools – an album from Brooklyn minimal synth trio Forma, whose debut LP offers another sumptuously melodic Kosmische workout.

This week also sees a milestone release from Hessle Audio, one of the world’s brightest and most focussed Bass music labels. The triple gatefold LP is a definitive document of their scope and prowess, giving the dancefloor what it needs in the form of 12 crucial new and exclusive tracks by the likes of Peverelist, D1, James Blake, Pangaea, Pearson Sound, Blawan, Addison Groove, Joe and Elgato. The double CD edition includes all those exclusives plus an extra disc of label classics. Oh, and the vinyl also holds both CDs free inside – but be warned, it’s already sold out at source so snap it up quick if you want one.

Hands down, Gene Hunt and Rush Hour’s ‘Chicago Dance Tracks Part 1’ is one of the most essential archival Chi-town excavations in living memory. The first volume contains seven raw and previously unreleased jams taken from the reel-to-reels of Ron Hardy protégé, Gene Hunt, covering incredibly mighty cuts from Mr Fingers, Mike Dunn, Steve Poindexter, Farley J.M.F, Ron Hardy and more. No fuss – just BUY ON SIGHT!!!

Giuseppe Ielasi’s increasingly impressive Senufo Editions label, meanwhile, presents two diverse and engrossing works by Berlin-based sound artists this week. The Raionbashi/Roigk-Fromberg side is a personal fave, covering darkly suggestive and modern musique concrète constructions reminiscent of Yellow Tears or Frieder Butzmann. The other is by Alessandro Brivio and covers a minimalist rhythmic obsession with African aesthetics. Both are seriously limited and highly recommended – we urge you to explore.

Also finally making it to vinyl is Mika Vainio’s latest Ø album ‘Heijastuva’ – another exceptional set of purified, exalted electronics. You should know by now that practically everything he touches is near essential, and these tracks ranging from bleakly alien soundscapes to crystalline minimalist bliss falls squarely in that category. Similarly recommended, BJ Nilsen’s new side for Touch’s white label series captures that isolated Nordic spirit in beautiful style – limited copies only, for quick clickers!

Lastly, If you fell in love with Motion Sickness of Time Travel with the release of the gorgeous “Seeping Through the Veil of the Unconscious”, her other project (alongside husband Grant) is called Quiet Evenings and they have a really quite stunning album out on the preservation label this week – make sure to check it out.

On the singles front, Fatima offers a luxurious and emotive single for the Eglo crew (produced by Floating Points), dBridge delivers a limited whitelabel cut of the mighty ‘Rendezvous’, while heavy-hitters from Lil Silva, Teeth, Lando Kal, Desto and Keysound complete a sterling lineup.

Also out this week, new releases from Alvarius B, Barn Owl, Robin Guthrie, Blank Dogs, City Center, Skream, Ema, Commix, Dominik Eulberg, John Tejada, Minimal Wave, JTC, Omar S, Group Doueh, Ricardo Villalobos, James Pants, Black Swan, Dolphins Into The Future, Milyoo, Kontext, Kromestar, Viktor Vaughn and much much more.

have yourselves a fabulous week…

Peace! nekkers…xx

ANDY STOTT
Passed Me By
TECHNO / HOUSE
Modern Love
2LP // £11.99

Emerging from a 12 month hiatus, Andy Stott enters a compelling new phase of evolution on ‘Passed Me By’. Besides marking his most substantial output since debut album ‘Merciless’, these seven tracks signify a renewed, yet introverted vitality to his sound, inverting the energy of his Juke and Technoid hardcore excursions into something more brooding and subtly visceral. They’re strident and sensual yet stoically retentive, folding in a wider palette of influences from Kassem Mosse to Arthur Russell, to Actress and James Ferraro, but ironically sounding more Andy than ever. Stepping into this abyssal sound on ‘New Ground’ we’re dominated by bone crushing bass weight, pinned under relentless waves of subbass whilst shards of hypnagogic exhalations struggle for air in his autoerotic pressure system. That slow, vice-turning intensity is breathlessly transferred to the aquatic swing jack of ‘North To South’, before the gasping Linn drums and glazed boogie licks of ‘Intermittent’ offer halfway resolution. Their pent up tension is released in ‘Dark Details’, suggesting a lonely silhouette left in the warehouse after the crowd has gone, dancing like the Moving Shadow logo come to life before the screwed zombie swagger of ‘Execution’ and that staggering title track slowly shuts down your system with shark-eyed intent. Simply put, if you’ve been hypnotised by the music of Kowton, Kassem Mosse, Actress or NWAQ in recent years, this record is just essential.

MIST (JOHN ELLIOTT & SAM GOLDBERG)
House
ELECTRONIC
Spectrum Spools
2LP // £17.99

For the fourth release on Spectrum Spools, the label he operates in partnership with Editions Mego, John Elliott himself steps up to the plate with his old mucker Sam Goldberg (Radio People). Formed as recently as 2009, the duo have already advanced and honed their sound across two LPs and two cassette releases, so this latest really feels like the culmination of all they’ve learned. Together they conjure gleaming utopian vistas initially too bright and detailed to fully take in: building inexorably to a heart-bursting climax, ‘Twin Lanes’ is what you’d want playing if you’d saved the planet from total destruction at the hands of alien scum, a gushing liquid rainbow of sheer analogue loveliness (sorry, it’s really hard not to sound like a big girl’s blouse when confronted with music this beautiful) ‘Mist’ is closest to the aching Ash Ra stylings of Emeralds, ‘P.M’ is a diesel-powered techno noir reminiscent of Landcruising-era Carl Craig, and ‘Dead Occasion / Ovary Stunts’ is perhaps our favourite piece on the LP, a fine, three-movement progression of sustained drones, hectoring drum patterns and skyward-pointing arpeggios layered past the point of insanity. Sublime, brain-frying stuff from two master practitioners of modern synth music.

VARIOUS / HESSLE AUDIO
116 & Rising
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
HESSLE AUDIO
3LP+2CD // £25.99

**Gatefold triple vinyl with artwork by Will Bankhead + the double CD edition free inside** Hessle Audio are surely the UK’s finest forward-thinking dance label. Their ascent to the bassbin vanguard is cemented with ‘116 and Rising’, the label’s 1st compilation featuring exclusive tracks by Peverelist, Elgato, Blawan, D1, James Blake, Addison Groove, Pangaea, Joe, Pearson Sound and more. Since 2007 their tightly knit roster have produced a stream of achingly ON IT records, including no small amount of debuts and genre classics from figures who’ve come to massively influence the field. We can largely attribute their success to the seriously focussed yet broad tastes of the trio behind the imprint, namely David Kennedy (Pearson Sound/Ramadanman), Ben Thomson (Ben UFO) and Kevin McAuley (Pangaea); three clued-up youths with an unswerving passion for dance music from US House and Garage to the UK Bass culture they all came through with. ‘116 and Rising’ is a sterling testament to their innate understanding of the scene, touching on up-to-the-moment 116bpm subbass and Latin clap attacks from Joe at one extreme, and the deadly, archival post-grime futurism of D1’s ‘Sub Zero’ at the other, all linked with a coiled thread of ‘ardcore dynamics borne from Jungle, D&B, Garage and Grime precedents. For us, the most exciting tracks inside come from two of their most recent additions, with the nagging, sensual hook of Elgato’s ‘Music (Body Mix)’ and the ruff ‘n tumble programming of Blawan’s ‘Potchla Vee’ already glued to our decks, but the very best come from relatively old hands; in the inimitable torque of Peverelist’s infinitely sumptuous ‘Sun Dance’, and Pangaea’s deeply rave-spiked ‘Runout’, while there’s close runners from Pearson Sound’s agitated ‘Stifle’ and the whisky-faced tuning of James Blake’s ‘Give A Man A Rod (2nd Version)’. Ultimately, it’s a definitive document of the UK underground at the start of this decade and therefore a hugely recommended purchase for dancers, DJs and dance music connoisseurs alike. Vinyl tracklisting as follows: A1 Music (Body Mix) A2 Cool Story Bro B1 Stifle B2 Potchla Vee C1 Run Out C2 Brunk D1 Subzero D2 Bijoux E1 Twice E2 Give A Man A Rod (Second Version) F1 Fuk Tha 101 F2 Sun Dance

GENE HUNT PRESENTS
Chicago Dance Tracks Part 1
TECHNO / HOUSE
Rush Hour
2LP // £15.99

**Two plates of absolutely KILLER unreleased traxxx by Mr. Fingers, Ron Hardy, Mike Dunn, Steve Poindexter, Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley and Farley Jackmaster Funk!!!** Holy F**********cking christ on a bike! Gene Hunt and Rush Hour have just pulled out one of the deadliest collections of unreleased Chicago tracks in living memory!!! Following the label’s commendable excavations of classic and unreleased jams by Ron Hardy and Jamie Principle, they’ve opened a veritable floodgate of previously reel-to-reel-only recordings with much help and coordination from legendary Chi-town jock and R. Hardy protégé, Gene Hunt. Without further ado, you’ll find the original mix of Ron Hardy’s ‘Sensation’, a pure, killer rhythm track version with no vocals!; Mr Fingers’ nasty-but-nice ‘Finger F*ck’; Gene’s own rugged version of ‘326 Donnie’; Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley’s tweakin’ and twirlin’ ‘I Don’t Know’; Mike Dunn’s incessantly hypnotic banger ‘Gherkin Aftermath 909′; Poindexter’s vinyl-only exclusive, the jab-jackin’ ‘Betsy Smith’; and Gene’s ridiculously sub-heavy mix of Farley J.M.F’s ‘Yes He Saved Me’. It also comes with an insert featuring photos and interviews, but seriously, does this deal need sweetening?! F*ck, we should be offering them photos of our sisters or something. BUY ON SIGHT!!!

RAIONBASHI / ROIGK-FROMBERG
Split LP
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
Senufo Editions
LP // £14.99

*Amazingly dense and broken drone experiments – Numbered edition of 280 copies* Senufo edition seventeen comes in a painfully limited run of 280 numbered copies and features captivating collage/musique concrète works by three multi-disciplinary sound artists from Berlin. Raionbashi aka Daniel Löwenbrück (BlackJewishGays) is well known to noise heads as the CEO of the Tochnit Aleph label and Rumpsti Pumsti shop, widely-revered havens for experimental music and sound art. His side, ‘Der Strick’ is an uncanny composition built on richly resonant basses and layered with suggestively unsettling field recorded samples including an despairing female voice and other “…people and animals recorded without their knowledge”. The work grows stealthily from ultra sparse, Ambarchi-like basses and discordant, frictional strings into a miasma of acousmatic menace, revealing only the vaguest clues to keep us in chilly suspense until the ravens at the close are practically picking at our bones. It’s a thoroughly recommended experience for fans of Yellow Tears, KTL or Frieder Butzmann. Equally enigmatic is ‘Blowing up the master’s workshop’, a stoically dynamic work created by Stefan Roigk and Daniela Fromberg and “inspired by Max Ernst’s collage das schlafzimmer des meisters – la chambre à coucher de Max Ernst, 1920.” Their piece feels far more arcane and febrile, working a wider palette of tones and field recorded acousmatic textures into a wormhole of viscerally immersive sound design, the sort of queasily affective arrangement designed for those who love to revel in a heightened spectral awareness of low end frequencies and ghoulishly metamorphic shapes. Effectively this is another essential from Senufo, if you like this kind of stuff, which we really must confess to. Black vinyl (cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin), printed cover with a photo from Roger Ballen. Very highly recommended.

Ø (MIKA VAINIO)
Heijastuva
ELECTRONIC
Sahko Recordings
LP // £10.99

Something quite exceptional from Mika Vainio – a 17 minute exploration of guitar feedback manipulation plus three further minimalist electronic compositions. Not that it was ever in question, but ‘Heijastuva’ shows the real scope of Mika’s oeuvre from the outset with a lightshow of tenderly harmonised and deftly sculpted distortion referencing timeless music from Robert Fripp and Brian Eno’s experiments in the ’70s through to modern day Fennesz or Jim O’Rourke, all with a graciously diffident composure and detached beauty. This track could reduce sentimental types to tears. In more familiar, bleak and isolated terrain ‘Ankysiolyytti’ is eleven minutes of wonderfully alien soundscapes mapping similar zones to Daphne Oram or Rafael Toral. Cleansing the palette, ‘Ensimmäinen Valo’ redolent of his amazing ‘Kantamoinen’ tracks may be short but it’s also one of the most affecting pieces here, and ‘Hikari’ is a sublime exercise in ultra-refined, minimalist electronic composition with a crisp and purified finish. So good.

QUIET EVENINGS
Transcending Spheres
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
Preservation
CD // £11.99

It seems only moments ago that Rachel Evans (aka Motion Sickness of Time Travel) was just another name on the mile-long list of cassette artists releasing in batches of ten. That is of course until Digitalis re-issued her startling ‘Seeping Through the Veil of the Unconscious’ and the accolades started rolling in, one by one. Quiet Evenings pairs Rachel up with hubby Grant, and finds them both exploring the kind of low-key electronic drones that have set the experimental world alight these last few years. That’s not to say that ‘Transcending Spheres’ is yet another attempt at nu-kosmische music though, there is something decidedly more modern about Rachel and Grant’s subtle compositions. It might be the inclusion of the quietly intense beats that form the backdrop of each track, pulsing in the background incessantly eliciting comparison to Ezekiel Honig’s techno-indebted compositions. These whisper-quiet rhythms are the perfect accompaniment for Rachel’s signature haunted synthesizer drones, which bubble and wash through each track like a freshwater stream sparkling in the rich moonlight. It feels to me like there are so many hidden layers to these tracks it would be almost offensive to label it new age, still there is something to be said for getting a piece of music it would be a pleasure to drift off into a lucid state listening to. Gorgeous stuff.

ALESSANDRO BRIVIO
Associazioni Poro
ELECTRONIC
Senufo Editions
LP // £14.99

*Numbered edition of 200 copies pressed up on transparent vinyl, cut at Dubplates & Mastering* Making a 2nd appearance on the prized Senufo Editions series, Alessandro Brivio shares his studies of complex and obsessive rhythm tracks reflecting a passion for African aesthetics. The title ‘Associazione Poro’ refers to a foundation of Africanists founded by the great Italian collector Carlo Monzino. The record comprises five tracks of heavily repetitive percussive arrangements, looping more electronic pulses with discernibly organic drums in ultra-minimalist and hypnotic moiré patterns. We wouldn’t call these rhythms overtly funky, but, like the ultra-minimalist techno output of JPLS, or like 6K’s recently reissued ‘Titrology’ EP, just the slightest intuitive adjustments in timbre and pitch result in enveloping X2sequential shifts, which can be potent stuff if you’re inclined to giving this stuff your closer attention, and especially on headphones! Lovers of purest rhythm minimalism from SND to Steve Reich or Ø will be in their element with this album. Transparent vinyl (cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin) with printed labels. Beautiful silkscreened cover (black on black cardboard), with small insert.

ALVARIUS B
Baroque Primitiva
FOLK / AMERICANA
Abduction
CD/BOOK // £17.99

‘Baroque Primitiva’ is Alan Bishop’s sixth album under the Alvarius B moniker, and finds the Sun City Girl on his first outing since the tragic demise of his well-loved band. Originally released on the legendary Poon Village label and housed in some typically provocative nudey artwork, the album can now be heard by those of us who don’t have the time or money to sit on eBay waiting for a copy to surface for less than two hundred and fifty quid. It’s worth the hype too; Bishop’s lo-fidelity take on Morricone is charming from the first note, and while it retains the edginess usually associated with the Sun City Girls it does away with any unwanted zaniness. The distant, indistinct pop songs sound almost like a precursor to the Olde English Spelling Bee set – these are Bishop’s interpretations of his own specific brand of nostalgia, and as he covers ‘You Only Live Twice’ and ‘God Only Knows’ it becomes strikingly obvious to make that link. The songs are melted around the edges, haunted with Bishop’s careful treatment and pointed style and while they don’t necessarily stray too far from the originals they are reframed so beautifully it’s hard not to fall for their charms. Like the Autre Ne Veut album or even the offworld hypnotic visions of Julian Lynch or even Vincent Gallo, the shimmering halo around this music is unmistakably compelling, and all the more interesting for it. You won’t hear a more engaging selection of homespun songs this year.

BJ NILSEN
Vinyl
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
Touch
LP // £12.99

*First in a series of limited edition whitelabel releases from Touch* Touch start their new vinyl-only White Label series with an elemental ambient session by BJ Nilsen. ‘Vinyl’ was recorded on location in Sweden, Iceland, Austria and England using various microphones, media and formats and features the sounds of wind, waves, tone generators, piano, guitar and “other stuff”. The tracks are two longer expanses of inimitable ambient drift clocking in at 14:44 and 15.14 respectively. Side A opens and closes to what we’d imagine to be field recordings, and moves through an internal system of mesmeric, plangent drone sonorities in between… maybe like a recording the electromagnetic radiance of some underground mine in the bowels of an icelandic volcano. Side B is more concerned with extreme tonalities, from the sustained and shrill notes which open the piece through to resonant aquatic bass shapes like the rubbed gongs of Thomas Köner and more explicitly doom-laced subbass quakes sounding like the prelude to the calving of a titanic wall of ice. Mixed in Berlin 2010. Mastered by Jason @ Transition. Recommended nocturnal listening.

FATIMA

BEATS / DOWNTEMPO / BOOGIE
Eglo Records
12″ // £7.99

Utterly exquisite offerings from Eglo’s blessed soul vocalist, Fatima Bramme Sey, atop the creamiest beats from equally talented producer/label boss, Floating Points. If you’ve dipped into the warm waters of modern Soul in the last few years it’s highly likely you’re familiar with Fatima’s output already, from her appearances on DVA’s ‘Just Vybe (Soule:Power Mix)’ to Shafiq Husayn’s ‘Lil Girl’ or a slew of Eglo releases. Make no mistake, though; this is the one you need! The A-side is a luxurious showcase in three parts: from the bass-suspended red-carpet introduction of ‘Cinnamon’, through the soul-controlling R&B of ‘Mind’ and the compellingly classic-sounding ‘Innervision’. However, we reckon it’s likely the flipside will be hailed as the masterpiece of this record, and both her and Floating Points’ calling card for time to come. On ‘Red Light’ her immaculately rendered tones rise from filigree Rhodes keys to be joined by tenderly gripping shuffle beats Theo P would be proud of, before unfurling into one of the most luxurious Deep House tracks you’re likely to hear this year, if not the next five. The production throughout will potentially leave you breathless. Take it on trust or check the samples, either way you’ll have to dislodge that heart from your mouth. Highly recommended!

LIL SILVA
The Patience EP
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
GOOD YEARS
12″ // £5.99

UK Funky’s foremost architect drops his most substantial release to date, the crucial ‘Patience EP’ via Good Years. Since dropping his definitive ‘Funky Flex’ 12″ in 2008 and the successive ‘Pulse vs Flex’ and ‘Seasons’ in 2009, Lil Silva has played it very cool with only a select handful of highly considered killers on Night Slugs besides some higher profile remix work for Mark Ronson and on Fugitive’s ‘Bad Girls’. His first drop of 2011 is stupendously heavy. From the cold, martial snare cracks and demented samples of ‘Patience’, to the overwhelmingly subbass pressure of ‘Cheese And Bun’, and the sumptuous, feminine pressure of ‘On Your Own’ with Sampha, there’s no doubt in our minds that Lil Silva is still perched at the top of his chosen game. If you’ve got a rave to rule, a BBQ that needs some flavour or a batty twitching for the dance, this is an utterly essential release.

DBRIDGE
Rendezvous (Limited Whitelabel)
JUNGLE / DRUM & BASS
Exit Records
12″ // £7.99

Exit Recordings do the right thing and drop dBridge’s incredible ‘Decayed’ backed with the Ae-esque melody of ‘Rendezvous’. Following an original appearance on the ‘Mosaic’ compilation, ‘Decayed’ finally makes its way onto vinyl, cutting a strikingly unique silhouette of lugubrious, quasi-speed D&B with more links to the slow-motion moves of Kassem Mosse or Funkstörung’s ultra-criss IDM than any of his peers: a squashed and super low-ridin’ piece of genius up there with the best in his catalogue. Flipside, ‘Rendezvous’ maintains the melancholy mood with a sublime chord sequence like something from Autechre’s ‘LP5’ era, but amps the energy levels with more sprightly syncopations above swelling subbass motions. For dBridge fans and electronica fiends, this is pretty much essential!

TEETH
Shawty (Falty DL Mix)
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
502 Recordings
12″ // £7.99

*Includes Falty DL remix** Crushingly crucial solo debut from Teeth, a brilliant new addition to Oneman’s 502 roster. Behind the alias is one Matti Pentikäinen, a Finnish producer based with the Ceebrolistics crew but now cutting out on some clipped and muscular R&BX808 bounce stance. ‘Shawty’ has been battered on dubplate by Oneman and his posse for a little while now, becoming instantly recognisable for it’s seductive female vocal sample and those gorgeously sweeping Northern Light synthlines. Factor in some Air Max-bubble bursting subs and pointillist garage beats and you’ve a certified winner. Flip over and Falty DL gives it a more slippery 2-Step overhaul, balancing the slick energy between shivering hi-hats, downpitched kicks and hydraulic bass functions with achingly taut precision. BIG tunes!

Slick debut of synth-iced HipHip electronica from Utrecht-based Krsur, featuring remixes by Naive Machine and Niño. For our $, this is the best release on MYOR records to date, combining the best bits of synth-driven Skweee funk and Beat Dimensions bounce in lazer-cut form. Stones Throw Records
2LP // £17.99

Stones Throw’s helplessly eclectic oddity provides some of his most developed material on this eponymous missive. Since his 2008 debut, Pants has moved from Colorado to Cologne to work as a studio engineer, which has evidently yielded some influence on his music, from the motorik thunder of ‘Beta’ to the Suicide-esque machine rock of ‘Strange Girl’ and the lambent library-ambient outro ‘Epilogue’, but to be fair they only account for…

Dreamy New Age jacks for the mature mid-tempo raver! Mr Dunbar’s latest is quite possibly his lushest yet, flowing through the mists of House-time and space from the magical and misty Nu Groove-at-the-Haç vibes of ‘Polo’ to the levitating loops of ‘Ballroom’ on the A-side, while ‘Piano & Dream World’ takes a starward trajectory at a lovely, leisurely velocity, gazing out over glistening synths and gauzily distant, roving bassline and…

Trailing last years deeply impressive debut, the enigmatic Black Swan presents another arresting drone movement, or “a symphony of misery and sorrow” for USA’s Experimedia outlet. ‘The Quiet Divide’ condenses intimately precious space/time over two sides of uniquely textured ambient drone, recalling the works of The Caretaker, Philip Jeck or Svarte Greiner to a large degree, yet with a misanthropy and mid-winter bleakness unique to its formless silhouette. 12″ // £5.49

Strutting Italian electro-disco from the Out Of City trio, following releases for Eskimo and DC recordings with ‘Galactica’, backed by Emperor Machine and Simone Fedi remixes. The original is a hot blooded, slow-grooving charmer crafted in vintage-sounding style, while Simone Fedi (aka 1/3 of the band) gives a more rolling slow Italo version and Emperor Machine gives the highlight on his dubbed out and extended rework. Prima.
SHIT ROBOT
Losing My Patience (Hot Chip Mix)
DFA
12″ // £6.99

Suave disco-pop from Shit Robot with vocals from Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, plus a cool Hot Chip remix and two versions from Unabombers. The original is smudged and effete enough to work the bar or early night club slots, but Hot Chip add more propulsive New York House drums for driving effect and Unabombers take it deeper into the night with teased out arpeggios and an Italo directness.

LP // £10.99

“When talking about Ska Music one group of musicians whose name always comes to the forefront of the conversation are The Skatalites. GOOD YEARS
12″ // £5.99

UK Funky’s foremost architect drops his most substantial release to date, the crucial ‘Patience EP’ via Good Years. Since dropping his definitive ‘Funky Flex’ 12″ in 2008 and the successive ‘Pulse vs Flex’ and ‘Seasons’ in 2009, Lil Silva has played it very cool with only a select handful of highly considered killers on Night Slugs besides some higher profile remix work for Mark Ronson and on Fugitive’s ‘Bad Girls’….

Shawty (Falty DL Mix)
502 Recordings
12″ // £7.99

*Includes Falty DL remix** Crushingly crucial solo debut from Teeth, a brilliant new addition to Oneman’s 502 roster. Behind the alias is one Matti Pentikäinen, a Finnish producer based with the Ceebrolistics crew but now cutting out on some clipped and muscular R&BX808 bounce stance. ‘Shawty’ has been battered on dubplate by Oneman and his posse for a little while now, becoming instantly recognisable for it’s seductive female vocal sample…

Further / Time Out
Hotflush Recordings
12″ // £5.99

Lando Kal, best known as half of Lazer Sword, steps forth with a cyber-fresh solo debut. Face-first, ‘Further’ tucks into HD hyper-step mode, swinging on an original US Garage rhythm buffed with silicon-fine finish and robo-dextrous edits for cutting-edge appeal. Turn it over and ‘Time Out’ embarks on some more discombobulated business, synching the groove between flickering, Juke-like drum timbres and full-sunken, batty-swiping subs before an aquatic 4/4 resolution and…
DESTO
Glass Clouds
Ramp Recordings
12″ // £7.99

Desto has been fairly quiet since his Oneman-lauded ‘Disappearing Reappearing Ink’ side on Ramp Recordings. He returns to the label with ‘Glass Clouds’, another icily melodic but Subbass-warmed and slinky skanker. ‘Stay Strong’ is yet more minimal, but doffing a cap to Burial and Zomby with zig-zaging synthlines and acres of precipitous space. Fellow Finn, Late chimes in with his own version, buckling the beats at the knees for a…

Following a strong introductory 12″ on Subeena’s Opit label, Kentucky’s Milyoo drops four deep-fried and unclassified beats for Saigon. As anyone who peeped the ‘Dasein’ 12″ will testify, there was simply no stable bracket for his sound, so we won’t try and fix him with one. BENGA / KUTZ
Transformers / Shake it
Oi
12″ // £6.49

Debut drop from A’dam’s Oi! party crew, sending two burly dubstep ‘floor controllers from Magnetic Man’s Benga and Soul Jazz-regular, Kutz. Benga is in robust form on ‘Transformers’, figurin’ body twystin’ bass and fiercely radioactive synthlines with a taut, powerful energy. Kutz’ ‘Shake It’ is slower, downpressing the energy into squashed subs and lumbering halfstep rhythms.
JAKES
Hench Mixtape Vol2. Sampler 2
HENCH
12″ // £5.99

Gutter Bristol sounds from Jakes and his boy D*Minds serving two chunks from the forthcoming H.E.N.C.H Vol.2 mixtape. Going solo, Jakes does the squealing, wheelin’ mid-range halfstep thing on ‘Dalek’ with predictably cheesy samples arranged for party-starting effect. Flipside with D*Minds is a different story, harking back to Jakes’ killah 808 sounds on ‘Rhythm’ but in a colder, Gangsta-glaring style. ‘Eavy as.
KROMESTAR
Colourful Vibrations
DUBSTEP FOR DEEP HEADS
CD // £8.99

Kromestar clears his cache of recent productions with ‘Colourful Vibrations’. The title neatly summises the synaesthetic quality of Kromestar’s notoriously bass weighed sound, and covers the spectrum of his Dubstep niche from the R&B-splashed ‘Family Apart’, to cyber-spacious digi-dub on ‘Disagree’, to midnight-romantic chords and velvet subs for ‘Dark Love’, sino-step on ‘A Stroll In The Night’ and shifty dread wickedness with ‘Grey Thought’. Genuine soldier styles!

Hold The Phone’s improvisations for synthesizer and strings, ‘Safe Breezes’ makes up the 1st release on the Sun Ark cassette series. Merging the minds of Cameron Stallones (Sun Araw) with Barrett Avner (Sadistic Candle), ‘Safe Breezes’ documents a meandering, and quite often demented, dialogue between two frazzled minds. Lovely pop music from Clock Opera aka Guy Connelly, following releases on Kitsuné and remixes for Au Revoir Simone and Tracy Thorn. ‘Belongings’ is where the magic lies, starting out as a crystalline torch song, all fragile vocals and discrete, twinkling piano keys before finally somersaulting into a euphoric rock flourish. The fourth in legendary Norwegian rockers’ Motorpsycho’s series of blistering live documents, ‘Intrepid Skronk’ finds them joined by new drummer Kenneth Kapstad as they power through material from their sprawling back catalogue. This is what a real rock band should sound like; enviably tight, heavy enough to blow the roof off of whatever venue they should choose and laced with the kind of oozing prog compositions that would have had…

You’re In It Now
Acephale
LP // £10.99

*Initial run of marbled black/white vinyl ltd to 500 copies* Pure X (fka Pure Ecstasy) drop the gorgeously bittersweet, brusied and slow twangin’ rock ‘n roll soul of ‘You’re In It Now’. That heart-wreching title track has been in circulation for a couple of years now but arrives remastered on Acéphale and backed with three newer songs; the lonely highway anthem ‘Dwldwd’, the majestically rendered, tender instrumental ‘Untitled’ and the…
TRUE WIDOW
As High As The Highest Heavens…
KEMADO
CD // £13.99

“Dallas-based trio True Widow play against type. Big guitar, bigger drums and the biggest bass (played by D.H., Slim, and Nikki, respectively) effortlessly recreate the unending skies of prairie America, where storms blow across with fury, horizons are unencumbered by the choke of skyscrapers and electric light, and the atmosphere pushes you down. A rumbling backdrop of distortion churns away, both behind and within True Widow’s plaintive song structures, but…

Sic Alps’ Ty Segall offers his 1st single with Drag City ahead of his forthcoming ‘Goodbye Bread’ LP. Each side’s a winner, with the loping, grungy rock ‘n roll of ‘I Can’t Feel It’ on the A-side and the more upbeat, chewy guitar distortion of ‘Children Of Paul’ on the other. Limited copies.

“Another month, another cool and unique R&B sound from the Jukebox Jam series! This time around, we feature ’40s songstress with a really superb low-slung and slinky number. Making its first appearance on 45rpm vinyl, ‘Shrinking Up fast’ is bound to set pulses raising with its hot and seductive jazzy feel, Mambo rhythm and wailing horns. Yet another record which sounds not so much ahead of its time as occupying…

CD // £12.99

Jazzman present the highly endearing debut from British pianist/composer/arranger, Greg Foat. We could have been fooled into thinking tis was some vintage find, such is the accomplished virtue of these tracks. Greg deploys unusual instrumentation, including harpsichord, tubular bells and a 15 piece choir is a style reminding of, but not limited to, Serge Gainsbourg, and acknowledges his influences from Bruno Nicolai and Michel Legrand with nods to UK jazzmen…

Following an original appearance on the ‘Mosaic’ compilation, ‘Decayed’ finally makes its way onto vinyl, cutting a strikingly unique silhouette of lugubrious, quasi-speed D&B with more links to the slow-motion moves of Kassem Mosse or Funkstörung’s ultra-criss IDM than any of his peers: a squashed and super low-ridin’ piece of genius up…

Double Double (White Label)
METALHEADZ
12″ // £5.99

*1-sided hand-sprayed white label* Optimised dread D&B futurism from Commix. Serious.

RUBIK RECORDS
12″ // £6.49

Superior, nimble-but-heavyweight Junglist futurism from ASC and Heavy1. A-side, ASC reworks Calculion’s ‘Odessa’, working like his ‘The Lair’ cut for BLKND with a blend of razor-cut breaks and wave-sculpted electronics worked as a lithe and agile dance catalyst begging to be used on the techiest, forward thinking ‘floors. Flipside, Hironao Kawabata aka Heavy1 breaks down Jaybee & Sinistarr’s ‘Should I’, before rebuilding it as a powerful techstepper with Funked, angular…

Critical Music
12″ // £5.99

Code 3 aka the D&B alliance of Jubei, SP MC, Dakuan and Paul Ager drop two jazzy-but-nasty tracks for Critical Music. Both tracks are defined by proper hi-end production values, making those darker Neurobass sounds really ooze out the speakers on ‘What You Saying’, whereas the focus is on closely scrutinised drums timbres and jazzy chord changes on ‘Double Dipped’. One for fans of Calibre or Marcus Intalex.

Sophisticated, techy and deeply melancholy D&B minimalistix from Bristol’s Villem. Both sides are built swift and aerodynamic for the the dancers, with darting jazz keys synched snake-style to flickering Tech-step drums on ‘Provide’, and ‘Red Matter’ taking a more rolling route through crisply metallic drum timbres and brooding warehouse atmospheres. Classy gear for fans of Rockwell, or Felix K and the Hidden Hawaii series.

Ku Kanjani EP
Innervisions
12″ // £7.99

Innervisions rekindle their relationship with South Africa’s Amampondo following Hnerik Schwarz’s dalliance in 2008, this time with Ame versioning ‘Ku Kanjani’ from the forthcoming ‘Vujani’ album. JOHN TEJADA
Unstable Condition
Kompakt
12″ // £6.99

John Tejada, a man of too many pseudonyms to mention, comes to Kompakt with two melodic techno efforts. ‘Unstable Condition’ balances robust jack patterns in the mix against a richly colourful light display of piquant tones and drowsy bass, hitting a groove somewhere between Mathew Jonson and Kassem Mosse. ‘The Living Night’ is more uplifting, pushed by straight 4/4s and warming the atmosphere with a vintage, Kompakt-sounding melody that could…

Third volume of this crucial compilation series, presenting 12 classics on the cusp of ‘New Wave to New Beat’ from 1984. There’s some stone cold aces in here, not least Strafe’s crackish ‘Set It Off’ and Anne Clarke’s seminal ‘Our Darkness’, but also Section 25’s Factory classic ‘Looking From A Hilltop’ and Cabaret Voltaire’s ‘Sensoria’ but, as ever with this series, there’s always some total revelations for those who missed…

The duo of Cati Tête and Gérard Pelletier produced a clutch of gorgeously simple and diverse French dance-pop songs between 1982 and 1985, many of which appear here. This is pre-midi era so each cut has that inimitable swing and slink of the time, coupled with daft but irreplaceable lyrics and moody synths. Minimal Wave reissue of In Aeternam Vale’s unique self-titled album from 1984. Headed by Laurent Prot, the group were a notoriously prolific fixture on the French underground, apparently releasing over 200 recordings.
