Hello,

Andy Stott flipped any preconceptions of his music earlier this year with his ‘Passed Me By’ double-pack. He returns this week with ‘We Stay Together’, a companion piece of sorts that’s still tilling the same rut of analogue muck, screwing the beats to buckling effect for a slompy, detached jackers sound like nobody else. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but the best things in life usually aren’t. Only 700 copies exist and they won’t be around for long….

Equally recommended to darker-minded fantasists; a reissue on Forced Nostalgia from one of the most overlooked bands from the post-punk, dark-industrial era: Pump. Just in the last few months Pump have been cited by the likes of Demdike Stare, Raime and Blackest Ever Black, following a CD reissue last year of their second album “Sombrero Fallout”. It feels like we’ve been waiting an age for it, but their debut album ‘The Decoration Of The Duma Continues’ has now at long last been lovingly remastered and repackaged in a beautiful gatefold sleeve, presenting a pivotal document of underground UK misanthropy marking the ground between Industrial, Electronics and Post-Punk with more than an ounce of sadness lurking in the mix.

One for the Berlin fetishists (not that kind) – Modeselektor drop a super-deluxe hardcover book version of their ‘Monkeytown’ LP, replete with 28 picture pages of unseen photography and two clear vinyls, all signed and numbered by the simians themselves. The music itself is actually some of their finest to date, full of stadium-rousing Techno-pop anthems with guest spots from the likes of Thom Yorke, Otto Von Schirach and PVT. 500 copies only!

On a flex, it doesn’t come stronger this week than Ben UFO’s Rinse mix. It’s his first commercially available selection, trustingly sequenced and blended to near perfection and traversing the table from vintage House and Garage to nexx-minute Techno swing and even freakin’ Andrew Coltrane! The guy is just in a league of his own, really, and if you’re only gonna buy one mix CD this year, we’d recommend this one.

For the home listening quarters Simon Scott’s second album for Miasmah is a must check. ‘Bunny’ feels far more structured than its predecessors, typically touching on midnight jazz motifs and blooming shoegaze doom but with a more defined, confidently-rendered aesthetic making for some of his finest work to date.

Meanwhile, Hauschka & Hildur Guddnadottir also keep us pinned to the sofa with ‘Pan Tone’, a set of deeply evocative orchestrations dedicated to the ocean. The milder moments are lovely, but when they really summon the storm it’s utterly riveting stuff. It’s a limited edition housed in handmade, embossed cardboard/textile packaging, with download code redeemable from the label.

And a special mention for two synthesized gems; ADR’s ‘Solitary Pursuits’ is the first release from the very promising, Warp/British Library-affiliated Public Information label, and simply unmissable for fans of the Ghost Box sound and aesthetic. Also Leyland Kirby’s ‘Eager To Tear Apart The Stars’ is now available on CD and comes highly recommended to fiends of synthesized soundscapes. It’s in a lovely gatefold digipak featuring original artwork by Ivan Seal and is nothing short of amazing.

For the darker ‘floors, they rarely come more coveted than New York’s Chasing Voices. The third release in their occasional series presents a single side of immaculately stripped and stealthy Acid, somewhere between SAW 85-92 AFX and Tin Man. Dead limited and highly recommended!

In futurist swing mode Berlin’s Objekt presents his VIP versions of SBTRKT’s ‘Wildfire’, white label styles for the freshly-coined Sbjekt series. It shifts like an MIT-programmed dancer on the Berghain ‘floor and should not be missed by forward-listening DJs. And for something simply unmissable – make sure to check out the Regis remix of Percy X’s Soma classic ‘X-Trak’, remodelled with a sleeker hydraulic flow and a final flourish that’ll bring a shiver to even the most MDMA-fried raver.

Also out this week, new releases from Blue Daisy, Oren Ambarchi, Arp.101, Bonnie Prince Billy, AGF, Roots Manuva, Peter Broderick, Charalimbides, Calibre, Finders Keepers, Luomo, Emika, Vakula, Steve Reich, Benjamin Brunn, AD Bourke, DMX Krew, Teeth, Mark E and much much more.

Have yourselves a wonderful week…

Peace! nekkers…xx

ANDY STOTT
We Stay Together
TECHNO / HOUSE
Modern Love
2×12″ // £11.99

‘We Stay Together’ is a brand new doublepack from Andy Stott, a companion piece of sorts to the radical inversions of the ‘Passed Me By’ EP released earlier this year. Its predecessor left many heads dazed upon impact – in the best possible sense – and these six tracks, produced in its wake, amp the pressure to throttling degrees. Entering the digital compression chamber of ‘Submission’ you become a willing participant, before the lights are cut and you’re forced to adjust to the humid atmosphere and bruising, muscle-contracting darkroom throb of ‘Posers’. Suitably initiated, the EP’s fearless centrepiece ‘Bad Wires’ plunges into full on mud-party mode, dropping the tempo while intensifying the kinaesthetic funk with slow, clusterf*cked syncopation until you’re drowning in synthesized oil and crushed-glass textures. Fully submerged by ‘We Stay Together (Part One)’ time becomes elasticated like worn VHS tape, calling to mind Jamal Moss and James Ferraro soundtracking a rave in a sodden, flooded sauna, before inescapably tumbling into the sheer black hole of ‘Cherry Eye’ and left to the slompy jack of ‘Cracked’. Blatantly, we rate this record massively, and although it’s not for everyone, those looking for a more visceral, intense form of dancefloor pressure would do very well to check in.

PUMP
The Decoration of the Duma Continues
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
Forced Nostalgia
LP // £14.99

*The 1987 debut of one of the great forgotten bands of the post punk, dark-industrial era remastered at Dubplates & Mastering and reissued in a beautiful gatefold edition by Forced Nostalgia – 500 copies only* Pump were Andrew Cox and David Elliott, a pair of likeminded electronic music fiends who met at Brighton uni in ’79. After staring a fanzine and a tape label the pair eventually began to record their own material (initially under the moniker MFH) and released several cassette albums typified by underground industrial strains inspired by Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Faust and Heldon. They spent the middle of the ’80s often geographically estranged, with David writing for the notorious Sounds magazine alongside David Tibet, and Andrew working in Cornwall. In ’87 they finally recorded new material, making for their exceptional debut album under the Pump moniker – ‘The Decoration of The Duma Continues’, originally released on Andrew Hulme’s Final Image label. The album has languished in the out-of-print wilderness pretty much since it’s release and has now been carefully remastered and reissued by Forced Nostalgia on a beautiful gatefold vinyl pressing – with a suitably rich master and cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. “The Decoration…” is clearly influenced by the era that immediately preceded its release – capturing the vapour trails of the post-punk movement while fermenting industrial and electronic ideas that would go on to dominate their incredible, criminally overlooked second album “Sombrero Fallout”. The album opens with “Dance Without Music”, constructed around a spiralling synthline and skittering percussion somehow reminiscent of Cabaret Voltaire and the squashed anti-funk often heard on tracks by The Cure from the same era. But there is a much darker undercurrent permeating the pores of these tracks – and “A Veiled Woman” marks a watershed of sorts – taking a turn towards more unstable terrain with treated glass-bottle gamelan effects draping a veil of sadness and tension over inherently beautiful, original material. “A Sort Of Accident” goes even further towards establishing the stylistic links and aesthetics shared by Pump and some of their contemporaries, most notably – Coil. Reviewed at the time of its initial release, the album was described by The Observer as “bad mood music” while Melody Maker said it sounded like “the clanging and abrasion of rusted and misaligned gears and ratchets…” – and it is precisely that slightly unhinged, brilliantly forward-thinking marriage of beauty and decay that makes ‘The Decoration of The Duma Continues’ stand out so brightly against the backdrop of the music released at the time. Pump, to our minds at least, really are one of the great forgotten bands of the era.

MODESELEKTOR
Monkeytown (Deluxe Edition)
BEATS / DOWNTEMPO / BOOGIE
Monkeytown Records
Deluxe 2LP + Hardcover Book // £47.99

**Limited edition deluxe Hardcover book in 12″ size, with 28 picture pages (heavy paper) incl. various unseen and exclusive full page black and white pictures from Modeselektor (studio, travel, portrait). Inserted is the 2xLP of Monkeytown on exclusive clear vinyl. All books are signed and numbered by Modeselektor on the backside. 500 copies only for the world** ‘Monkeytown’ is Modeselektor’s 3rd album, and finds the duo at the peak of their powers: in 2011 they’re probably one of the world’s most sought-after live electronic acts. But while that sort of fame can usually dilute creativity or credibility, Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary are as vital and invigorating as they’ve ever been, if not more so, still siphoning the most vital ideas from underground UK and US dance scenes and reprogramming them with a knowing Berlin lean – and all on their own independent label. Their guests for this outing include Thom Yorke, Anti Pop Consortium, Otto Von Schirach and PVT, with some assists from long-time mates & collaborators Siriusmo and Sacha Ring (Apparat), and as usual they’re all having big fun. The highlights start with the Jukin’ Funky lift of opener ‘Blue Clouds’, and roll in thick and heavy with the Hi-Tech bang of ‘Evil Twin’ alongside Otto Von Schirach, through to the searing synthlines of ‘German Clap’ and the gorgeous, anthemic electro-rock epic ‘Green Light Go’. And what of the Thom Yorke tracks? They’re both excellent, too. On ‘Shipwreck’ he’s feathered into gasping phrases before allowed to glide at high altitude over some of their craftiest drum programming to date – something like Autechre doing a Juke shuffle – while he’s digitised into coded stutters on ‘This’ over the kind of stadium-stirring synthlines which gave their Moderat cut ‘Rusty Nails’ its classic status. Recommended!

BEN UFO
Rinse 16 Mixed By Ben UFO
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Rinse
CD // £8.99

Co-owner of the mighty Hessle Audio label and one of the best DJs in the UK, Ben UFO heads up his first commercially available mix CD. You shouldn’t need us to tell you this is a BIG look, but we just did, and we’ll also state the obvious again – it’s a total KILLER – taking in tracks across the board from Aaron Carl to Dro Carey, to Andrew Coltrane and How To Dress Well, including exclusives from Boddika & Joy O, Pearson Sound, Elgato, and Champion without once feeling forced or conceited. It’s an honest testament both to his enviable skills as a selector and his dextrous technicality, all deeply engrained from a background steeped in myriad styles of UK underground dance music and countless hours spent behind the decks on radio, in the dance and in the bedroom. The mix itself seduces with some deep House before fluidly extracting the best elements of tunes by Dro Carey, Third Side, STL and Blawan/Pariah’s Karenn, and getting ruffed up with futurisms from 2562, Jam City, Objekt and Champion’s lethal shake-down ‘Sensitivity’. The mid-section takes it deep and swinging with Elgato’s exclusive ‘Dunkel Jam’ and choice House from Soul Capsule, through burning Garage, both US and UK from Ordinary People and M Dubs, onto ruffige from Pangaea and Helix and sino-grime from Bok Bok and Kode 9. Forward to the end, there’s a deftly used noise token from Andrew Coltrane off his Trilogy Tapes 12″, and a poignant sign-off from Tom Krell’s HTDW. In all, it puts so many linear-minded jocks to shame, and quite importantly there’s a longevity to his selection and sequencing that’ll keep it with you for years. One of the mix CDs of the year, no doubt about it.

SIMON SCOTT
Bunny (Limited Vinyl Edition)
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
MIASMAH
LP // £12.99

**Includes MP3 download coupon for the full album plus bonus material, redeemable from the label** Simon Scott returns with his second album for Erik Skodvin’s Miasmah imprint, and what a blinder it is. Formerly a member of shoegaze legends Slowdive, and more recently collaborator with the likes of The Sight Below and Isan’s Anthony Ryan, Scott is a veteran and accomplished sound sculptor, but this new record finds him leaving behind pure ambience for something with more direction, more design, more bite. Opener ‘AC Waters’ is a formidable statement of intent: a terrifically tactile tapestry of ritualistic pipes, cinematic strings, plaintive acoustic guitars, drones and restless percussive momentum. Throughout the album there’s a running theme of minimalist midnight jazz a la of Kreng or Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore, with plenty of lugubrious double-bass, shuffling snares and distant horns. Nor, though, is Scott afraid to get his rock on, as on ‘Drilla’ or ‘Radiances’, a heavily reverbed wig-out that starts off like something off Verve’s Storm In Heaven or even a Slowdive record, before unspooling into a heavy, looming cloud of static – this is the direction that 90s shoegaze might’ve gone, had the technology and maturity been there. ‘Black Western Lights’ is pure doom, ‘Honeymoon’ promises – or at least hints at – redemption, all tremulous, GAS-esque string loops and pulsations, before ‘Gamma’ returns us to the sub-heavy, scorched earth audio-scenario for which Lustmord and Robert Rich’s Stalker remains the benchmark. A classy affair, this.

HAUSCHKA & HILDUR GUðNADóTTIR
Pan Tone (Limited Vinyl Edition)
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
SONIC PIECES
LP // £19.99

*350 copies only – handmade cardboard/textile packaging, embossed and numbered, including printed innersleeve & download code redeemable directly from the label* Dream hook-up from Hauschka and Hildur Gudnadottir, born out of their desire to create a series of compositions based on the idea of the ocean (the title alludes to their seeking to observe and record the sea’s specific colours using a Pantone guide). But there’s nothing wishy-washy about this collaboration, it’s a dynamic, full-bodied and strongly narrative outing – with a percussive drive underscoring the expected cello, piano and electro-acoustics. While string virtuoso’s Hildur’s natural musical inclination is towards darker, shadowy realms – remember her sumptuously bleak Without Sinking LP on Touch – Hauschka favours a lightness and more uncomplicated beauty, meaning there’s an agreeable tension and unpredictability at the heart of their co-created work. That said, fond as we are of the Penguin Cafeisms of ‘Cool Gray 1’ and ‘#294’, we’re instinctively more drawn to the stormier fare: with its bed of bassy drones and exquisite Celtic inflections up top, ‘Black 6’ conjures the inner thoughts of a 19th century galleon crew who’ve just lost a man overboard, while ‘#320’s blend of gravely arcing strings and insectoid chatter makes us think of an Oren Ambarchi live workout. If you’ve enjoyed Hauscha and Hildur’s solo work then be sure to check this album out – it’s every inch the sum of its parts.

ADR
Solitary Pursuits
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
Public Information
LP // £11.99

Already spoken about in excitable tones, ‘Solitary Pursuits’ is the opening gambit on a very promising new label – Public Information, “A survey of electronics… noise… psych… industrial… house… dub… wyrd-pop… library… techno… art+design from the last seven decades…” Well, they evidently know the right buttons to push and the people who push them, selecting Aaron David Ross (ADR), a Brooklyn-based multimedia artist best known as half of Fright/Merok’s Gatekeeper for their first excellent release. His sound here has a lot of parallels with the Ghost Box label, a similar feel for wide-eyed yet pensive sci-fi wonderment and the sort of evocative vignettes only known to hunters of the choicest library wax. It nods to the kind of music you’d imagine Drexciya would have drawn inspiration from as a kid, and subliminally seduced an entire generation who’ve grown up in front of the TV/Celluloid fantasy and its sonic associations. There’s some heartbreakingly lush moments in here – we urge you to investigate.

LEYLAND KIRBY
Eager To Tear Apart The Stars
ELECTRONIC
History Always Favours The Winners
CD // £9.99

*CD version – in a beautiful digipak with original artwork by Ivan Seal.* James Leyland Kirby is a prolific artist with a remarkably long and varied career working inside, outside and beyond the electronic underground. From his roots as renowned audio prankster and sonic agitator V/VM to his critically acclaimed work as The Caretaker and, most recently, Leyland Kirby – he’s always attracted the attention of an often bewildered audience, although his stature and position as serious auteur has somehow grown exponentially with every year that has gone by since his beginnings in rainy Edgeley back in the mid 90’s. Following on from 2009’s now-classic ‘Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was’ and the inauguration of new series “Intrigue & Stuff” earlier this year, he now returns with a new album – and it’s pretty clear that he’s just in the form of his life. These tracks are arrestingly clear-headed and sombre, with the requisite amount of emotional un-ease and a beguilling sense of ambiguity thanks to those perception-altering layers of fuzz and filtered detritus on the lens keeping things firmly hyperreal. How you decipher the meanings of these moods and atmospheres is where the beauty and longevity of these tracks lie, as patience and repeated listens will reveal new views of the landscape as the seasons change. Imagine if Roedelius had grown up in Stockport in the midst of a rave-o-lution, couple that with a sardonic yet discerning post-everything attitude 10 years before everyone else, and then wonder what that experience may result in – and you just might be quite close to imagining the treats this album holds in store for you…

CHASING VOICES
Another Walk
TECHNO / HOUSE
PRESERVED INSTINCTS
12″ // £9.99

**One-sided, black label, housed in screen-printed jacket** Another dark jewel from New York’s clandestine Preserved Instincts cabal. Keeping with tradition there’s no ostensible correlation with the previous two – which took in grungy steppers drone and artfully darkside Techno respectively – other than the insistence upon pure, analogue production techniques, and a romantically dystopian outlook. As was disclosed, Chasing Voices is the banner for a shady, unknown quantity of producers operating anonymously, but like the other two we really wouldn’t like to hazard a guess to their identities. It’s beside the point anyway, and what you do need to know is that this is another crucial instalment. It’s perhaps more subtle and stealthy than the others, setting the mood and aesthetic somewhere between vintage Aphexian Techno – kinda “SAW 85-92” era, and more stripped down Tin Man style acid functions, all fresh from a bunker laboratory somewhere in the bowels of the Big Apple (or a barn in Bolivia – we haven’t the foggiest!). Act fast, the first two disappeared in a flash…

SBJEKT (SBTRKT & OBJEKT)
Sbjekt#01
TECHNO / HOUSE
Young Turks
12″ // £7.99

**Hand-stamped white label** Berlin’s Objekt reworks his remix of SBTRKT’s ‘Wildfire’ in two VIP versions for the first SBJEKT 12″ (see what they did there?). A-side is a churning Technoid swinger built from pendulous, steel-plated kicks and riveted percussion with a peaking breakdown, all executed to the high standards he’s loved for. Flipside, he shears off any excess, adding more space and tweaking the edits for more aggressively-contoured rhythms, also removing the breakdown for those who can’t handle a hands-in-the-air moment. Very solid wares. TIP!

REGIS / PERCY X / ALEX SMOKE
Soma 20 Ltd. 1: Remixes by Regis & Ryan Crosson
TECHNO / HOUSE
Soma
12″ // £7.99

Superb double header to kick off Soma’s Ltd. series of remixes. There’s cause for excitement on both sides of the wax here. Face up, you’ll find the amazing Regis remodel of Percy X’s ‘X-Trak’; a sincerely dramatic piece of near-symphonic Techno built from mechanised chord sequences and hydraulic rhythms with a frankly stunning final section. It’s a no brainer, simple as. The flipside is a useful Tech-House remix of Alex Smoke’s ‘Make My Day’ – you know the one with the warbly melancholic robo-vocal? Yeah that one, but with a slicker sort of rhythmic undercarriage for the big rooms. TIP!

The Trick EP
Donky Pitch
12″ // £6.99

Some of that Finnish Skweee juice from V.C., unleashed on the Donky Pitch label. Six tracks deep of synth-soaked and computerised dopeness on a downbeat Electro flex. Watch out for the more moody, slightly cinematic ‘123’ and the crooked beats of ‘Deuces Dues’ for his deeper sound, or ‘Kind Of Bad’ for a cool, li-fi dose of funk.
AD BOURKE
Tidal Motion
BASIC RHYTHM
12″ // £6.99

Brash Boogie and slow Disco with a splash of Hip Hop flavour from Rome-based Adam Bourke. A-side ‘En Trance’ cuts straight to the middle of the floor with cut-up basslines, warm Rhodes chords and frickled synths for the Boogie bounce, while ‘Aquarius Rising’ lets it all out with brash, big-collared synths meaning to make an impression. IBERIAN
12″ // £6.49

Cardopusher brings the party to Iberian Records with a blend of early ’90s Hip-House, Rave and Boogie with a keen New York flavour. ‘Goldo’ plays a strangely kinky fusion of electro-scratches and shifty Latino syncopation on the A-side, one for the fonky ghetto pack, while the B-side brings the Electro-House bassline vibes of ‘We Run This State’ tucked with cheeky rave samples and ‘Body Slam’ drops the tempo for an…
DMX KREW
Funky Dancer
Fresh Up Records
7″ // £5.99

Slick, mid-tempo electro-boogie from the one and only DMX Krew on his boutique Fresh Up Records label. ‘Funky Dancer’ keeps the tidy machine groove tight in the pocket, but you’ve gotta chuckle at the estuary-affected “Darrrnce With Me” vocoder line. The other joint, ‘That Wild & Freaky Robot Funk’ works another hip rut with finger poppin’ finesse and proper wet acid squelch. Do it, yeh?

Flipside ‘Name This’ creates a deeper sort of pressure on a dub-spooked House groove carved from hard-edged drums and moody bassline. Support from Jackmaster.
GOTH-TRAD
Babylon Fall EP
Deep Medi
2×12″ // £11.99

The Far East assassin drops his most substantial work yet for Deep Medi. The lead cut features legendary JA vocalist Max Romeo on one of Goth Trad’s sweeter riddims, but there’s still enough menace and bass weight to hold it down in any of the bigger dances. The rest is back to meaner business, from the hard rolling Techno vibes of ‘Sublimation’ to the fluctuating double time flex of ‘Falling…
GERRY READ
Roomland (Youandewan Mix)
2nd Drop Records
12″ // £8.99

Gerry Read sustains the pressure of his Fourth Wave and Dark Arx 12″s with a slick Techno swinger backed by a Dubstep remix from Youandewan. The kinked 4/4 flow and wide dub chords of the original feels kinda like Andy Stott-meets-Sven Weisemann-in-Bristol, whereas the remix opts for an old skool Burial flex with gritty finish applied to quicksilver 2-step syncopation.
KROMESTAR
Colourful Vibrations EP 2
DUBSTEP FOR DEEP HEADS
12″ // £6.49

Second EP of cuts from Kromestar’s ‘Colourful Vibrations’ session, including a vinyl-only bonus cut ‘Atlantis’. Face up, ‘Family Apart’ plays it string-filled with vocodered R&B vocals and 808 drum fills, ‘Sweet Nightmares’ runs acidic skank beats. Face Down ‘Atlantis’ looks back to old-skool ’06 steppers vibes and ‘They’re Just Dreams’ is full of sci-fi styled melodies and Electro-sticky machine rhythms.
ECHO PARK
Fiber Optic (Jon Convex / 12th Planet & Finch Mixes)
Disfigured Dubz
12″ // £6.49

Future Boogie moves from Echo Park ‘pon Skream’s label, backed with Jon Convex and 12th & Flinch remixes. ‘Fiber Optic’ features a pleading R&B vocal over laminated mid-tempo Boogie rhythms, and the 12th Planet is just out-and-out Dubstep rave. The one to watch is Jon Convex;s curious fusion of Electro-Boogie and galloing Funky syncopation with dirty robot vocals.
KRAMPFHAFT
Makin’ Magic EP
Rwina Records
12″ // £7.99

Crafty beat fission from Utrecht-based Krampfhaft, landing somewhere between Bubblin’, 808 Bass and Dubstep on the ace Rwina Records. ‘I Needed You’ steps up like Araabmuzik gone Dutch, all crisp 808 rolls and shrill Bubblin’ squeals, while ‘Hyper Dreaming’ balances the Bubblin’ hyperactivity with cooler Broken Funky beats and chords to fine effect. Flipside you’ll find more of that 808 rollers sound on ‘Carl Sagan The Man’, and an impressive…
LAS
Power Surge (Desto Mix)
BLACK BOX
12″ // £5.99

Stylish, swaggering Dubstep heavyweights from Finnish fam, LAS and Desto. To avoid confusion, LAS isn’t the A.R.M.Y dude (we wish), or the Scouse beat combo, it’s L. Vainionpää, and his ‘Power Surge’ is an almighty halfstepper built with chest-pummelling subbass and nail-gunning snares. A must for the Kryptic Minds followers. Flipside Desto follows suit from aces on Rwina and Ramp with a cooler, Hip-Hop leaning remix, recharged with crisp 808s…

LEYLAND KIRBY
Eager To Tear Apart The Stars
History Always Favours The Winners
CD // £9.99

*CD version – in a beautiful digipak with original artwork by Ivan Seal.* James Leyland Kirby is a prolific artist with a remarkably long and varied career working inside, outside and beyond the electronic underground. JASMINA MASCHINA
Alphabet Dream Noise
Staubgold
LP // £14.99

Jasmina Maschina is Australian Jasmine Guffond, and ‘Alphabet Dream Noise’ continues her voyage into shimmering avant pop territory after 2008’s killer ‘The Demolition Series’. Through noisy field recordings, chattering guitars and her own gorgeous vocals we are led on a journey that is neither pop music, rock or drone – and like fellow Aussie Sanso-Xtro she manages to emerge with a sound that defies easy classification. There’s a little bit…

AGF PRODUCKTION
CD // £12.99

Sound poet, producer, vocalist and even calligrapher, AGF, or Antye Greie presents a challenging but satisfyingly complex new album. She’s blessed with an unquantifiable, deeply explorative spirit which is restlessly active on ‘Beatnadel’, her second solo album this year. Attempting to sum up it’s geometric contours and deeply abstracted shapes is a bloody hard task, but essentially she’s one character who can still make the art of glitched music sound…

Raised By Records
12″ // £7.99

*Includes A4 artwork, piano phrase notation and postcards* Craftily accomplished IDM/2-step fusions from Bristol’s William Yates aka Memotone. The A-side is a live version of ‘Small Good Thing’, a clever arrangement which morphs from 4/4, marimba-lead Double Garage into 3/4 time synth-boogie, strongly recalling everyone from Four Tet to Mount Kimbie along the way. Flipside, the complex composition of ‘Known’ and ‘Nightshift’ approach an interzone of James Blake and Downliners…

Following the worldwide success of their ‘YoYoYoYoYo’ debut, MC Naeem Juwan has enlisted the executive production assistance of Boys Noize for a full blooded blend of rip rockin’ sawtooth synths and chunky Electro-House beats primed to turn big rooms and living rooms alike into seething, pogoing, jacking party sessions. There’s an assuredly big name cameo from Santigold on their most stylish…

Denmark’s most romantic shoegazers, Jakob Skøtt (also of Limp, Causa Sui) and Anna Cecilia, reunite for a lush follow-up to ‘Ylajali’ released on Ghostly International in 2009. Over two years on, ‘Nachtblende’ (an aberration of the phrase for day-for-night filters used in the movies) finds their sound shining like a distant Scandinavian beacon on the shores of the Chill wave and dreamy synth pop resurgence which has sprouted since they…

12″ // £6.99

Due to popular demand Mark E finally presents his ‘Call Me’ anthem, backed with Dixon and Tensnake remixes. An impeccable blend of strings, steady-building organ and Diana Ross sample have made this a hugely sought-after choon ever since appearing in his Beats In Space mix. Remixing, Tensnake diverts the vibe into clipped and swinging Garage while Dixon serves a sort of cruising, sublimely kosmiche-tinted House vibe with crowd-tingling timing.

Slow To Speak
CD // £13.99

New York institution Slow To Speak (aka Francis Englehardt and Paul Nickerson) have pooled their expertise into this party-primed 24-track selection of classic 90’s Latin House. It’s worth considering that while the roots of House music are often considered to be Afro-American, especially in the case of Chicago and Detroit, for New York there’s also a massive influence from Puerto Rican and Dominican Latino culture – which is focussed on…
BENJAMIN BRUNN
Dust (Part 1)
Ashes
10″ // £6.99

Charming couple of Tech-House grooves in typically fresh Benjamin Brunn style. A-side ‘I Took Her Out For A 707’ works with a palette of raw Roland drum sounds, fat synth bass and breezy lead, all teased out with an effortlessly featherlight touch. Flipside ‘Don’t Cry For Yesterday’ nudges the tempo meter down for another instinctively canny machine groove, part aquatic dub-House and part NWAQ-styled Detroit lushness. Very sweet record, with…
BENJAMIN BRUNN
Dust (Part 2)
Ashes
10″ // £6.99

Second part of Benjamin Brunn’s optimised 707 sessions deliver two tracks of elegant old skool Chicago tributes housed in lovely jacket. A-side is ‘Neonlight Time’, a slinky, grooving machine rhythm layered with blushing, late night chords, kinda like a more lushed out, Teutonic Tevo Howard, if you will. Flipside ‘Pola’ is equally romantical, giving it up to oh-so-deep bassline bumps, super-criss handclaps and phasing chords which will have any ‘floor/living…
HATTI VATTI
Great feat. Echo Ranks (Andy Stott Mix)
ON THE EDGE
12″ // £6.49

Rooted Dub-Tech stepper backed with a low-key but effective Andy Stott remix. The original ‘Great’ enlists the vocals of Echo Ranks on a wide-style stepper with some big dub chord actions. Remixing, Andy Stott inverts the pressure to a stepping Techno flow, cutting into a sheer breakdown and surprisingly deadly drop, beautifully measured for dancefloor impact.
LADA
Lostbahnhof
FULL PANDA
12″ // £6.99

A tribute to every Techno fiend’s favourite junction from Fullpanda label head Dasha Rush and Lars Hemmerling. Both sides favour cold Industrial functions powered by killer, Regis-like bass rollidge and spooky, tripped-out dubbing with a ceramic finish for just the right amount of bruxist clench. A must for fans of Sandwell District, and the darkest moments of Frozen Border etc.
THE ORGAN GRINDER
New Age People
CATAPULT RECORDS
12″ // £5.99

*Hand-stamped white label* Two sides of old-skool styled House music, stripped down to organs and swinging New Jersey references. A-side’s the one, deploying some nice vocal stabs for friendly party vibes.
THEO PARRISH
Parallel Dimensions (2011 Edition)
Ubiquity
2LP // £18.99

*Finally re-pressed after 5+ years in the out-of-print wilderness.* originally released on sound signature in a frustratingly limited cd-only edition of 1000, this milestone in modern house is now reisssued on cd and appears on vinyl for the first time. Sounding like Sun Ra jamming with Fela from the depths of King Tubby’s mixing desk, the music on ‘parallel dimensions’ is haunted, mournful, elegant, and cavernous : distant horns and…
ASC / L.B. DUB CORP
Parallel Series 1
Mote Evolver
12″ // £7.99

Mote Evolver initiate their Parallel Series with a surprise Techno turn from ASC, backed with two L.B. Dub Corps cuts. Chained to a chugging 4/4, ASC gives the restlessly dynamic ‘Slow Burn’, which is anything but, next to the icier, bleeping rollidge of ‘Transit’. Flipside Luke Slater takes control with the refined Techno steppers motion of ‘Lurcher Dub’ plus the stripped and trippy tribalism of ‘Native Dub’.
RIVET
Running Thick
NAKED INDEX
12″ // £6.99

Frozen Border-affiliated Naked Index returns with three rumbling, funked-up Techno tracks from Rivet. ‘Slant’ has much potential as a dancefloor destroyer, rolling with dense, grouchy bass and restrained percussion until a skewed vocal sample comes and rips the head off it. Flipside features a scuzzier edit and the gruffer ‘Afterbirth’. Chunky.

Subway Into
ANSWER CODE REQUEST
12″ // £8.99

A choice cut for the Techy fiends, coming from an unknown producer on a new imprint. A-side starts out with sepulchral ambient techno murk on ‘Subway Into’ before coming over all Burial-meets-The Black Dog with the crackling textures and dread Garage Techno/IDM swagger of ‘Escape Myself’. B-side ‘Renewal Falls Due’ lands on some shuffled Industrial flex with Dynamo-era T++ bass for the late night halfsteppers, before the EP highlight ‘Reflected’…

Rush Hour
12″ // £7.99

BIG dance tracks from the Rush Hour archives! A-side is the previously unreleased peach ‘(My Back) Is Against The Wall’ courtesy of the mysterious Duster Valentine, a real classic-sounding NYC House jam full of haughty drums and frisky disco samples to get the juices going. The flipside has been out before, but chances are you missed out first time round – it’s Aardvarck’s killer, 2005 promo-only sample jam ‘(Just Washed)…
UNKNOWN / REFERENCE
Untitled 3 & 4
REFERENCE
12″ // £6.99

Anonymous Techno modulations from the low-key Reference label, who last dropped an intriguing session from Cajun Hardt. One side is more heads-down and wormholing Techno, pushed by rolling analog bass hits and gritty synths with droning atmosphere. On the other we get trapped in a looping Techno-House groove with mesmeric keys, shuffled beat and again with the trancily sustained drones. Solid tools for the later hours..
KLIC
Dachshund Skank Remixes
Hit And Hope Records
12″ // £6.49

Diverse remixes of KLIC’s debut EP from Greymatter, Pixelord and Gerry Read. Taking A-side duties, Greymatter turns ‘Forwards’ into a kinda squashed Hip-House jacker where down-pitched vocals play it cool over a rhythm which can’t decide if it’s breakbeats or bleep ‘n bass, and all the better for it. Flipside, fresh from kicking off Berlin’s Leisure System label, Pixelord (aka Gultskra Artikler) gives a a dynamic, atom-colliding 2-step/IDM remix of…
LAAK
The Fourth Space
AUSTERE RECORDINGS
12″ // £6.99

Warm Deep House moods from Austere Records’ Laak. Shades of vintage Larry Heard and the smoothest Chicago vibes are evoked through four tracks for the heads. Highlights happen on the floating, square-bass driven title cut and the soft, soul-vocal gentility of ‘Love Control’. One for fans of Keith Worthy, Steven Tang, Tevo Howard, Deep Space Orchestra.
