Hello,

Heatsick’s hallucinatory ‘Intersex’ LP for Pan is one of the most talked-about albums of the last few months. Deeply rooted in the sensual, aerobic mysticism of Italo Disco and Chicago House but with an instinctively avant electronic aesthetic, it puts minimal means (casio keyboard and loop pedals) to entrancing, rhythmelodic effect, transcending the dancefloor/bedroom boundary with effortless finesse. Experimental electronics rarely sound this sexy, psychedelic or seductive, and togther with the standardly deluxe Pan packaging, it comes with a massive recommendation.

The Throbbing Gristle reissue programme reaches one of electronic music’s finest moments with the remastered edition of ’20 Jazz Funk Greats’ this week. Completely restored from 24bit ‘baked tape’ digital transfers by Chris Carter, the 2CD edition comes backed with a bonus disc of unreleased material, plus colour booklet and alternate artwork, while the 180g vinyl edition sounds amazing and has been made in a limited run – don’t miss out.

From darker realms, Pinch & Shackleton’s long-touted collaboration lands in grand style on 2LP and CD for Honest Jon’s. It’s a sophisticated highpoint for the genre’s long playing category, more concerned with immersive soundscaping and affectively supernatural vibes than thuggish dancefloor weight, and conducted with a timeless quality which will ensure repeat listens.

Pekka Airaksinen’s 1972 LP ‘One Point Music’ is widely considered to be a holy grail of Finnish psychedelia. His sound is primal yet deeply studied, informed by the Parisian, Cologne and New York schools of avant-garde and concrete experimentation but conducted with a considered, alien stoicism unique to much Finnish music. Only 120 copies were originally made, so for fans of everything from Pierre Schaeffer to Mika Vainio or Uton, this should be considered an essential pick.

Eli Keszler’s Pan entry ‘Cold Pin’ is also a choice pick for the avant-garde heads. The Bostonian multi-instrumentalist, known for his work as Red Horse on Type, offers a dense, discombobulating side of motorized strings and clattering percussions in two parts, devising a visceral and near-delirious sound incomparable with almost anyone we can think of. Again, it comes with stunning Pan artwork – screenprinted jacket and poly sleeve – as standard for this wonderful label.

To outer space, we find Ben Frost and Daniel Bjarnson conducting celestial electronics on ‘Solaris’. Ostensibly a sci-fi album, ‘Solaris’ also reflects the themes of time, memory and mortality in the Stanislav Lem’s titular book and Andrei Tarkovsky’s film, also using the 28-piece Sinfonietta Cracovia to breathtaking electro-acoustic effect. Fans of Basinski, Johannsson, Bryars, Muhly and Fennesz should take note.

Of all the synthpop reissues we’ve encountered this year Vice Versa 1979-1980 is surely one of the most important. Later known as ABC, this LP compiles the Sheffield group’s earliest work, comparable with the likes of The Human league but with a more urgent, dystopian agenda. Seminal and essential music.

Chris Watson, another Sheffield legend, makes a prominent appearance with with two releases on Touch, including a rare outing on vinyl! The CD is essentially his recordings for the BBC TV series Great Railway Journeys aboard the cross-continental ‘Ghost Train’, while the vinyl is a stunning ‘mix’ version, transforming the source material into a skillful collision of drone and environmental sound. Need we say more?

And two reissues worthy of note – Can’s ‘Tago Mago’ 40th anniversary 2CD edition arrives with 40 minutes of previously unreleased live recordings from 1972, and the comprehensive, deluxe boxset edition of Arthur Russell’s ’24-24′ music lands packed with unpublished photos, artwork and testimonials. Genius music for the connoisseurs.

For your dancing feet, they don’t come any hotter than the solo debut of Hype Williams’ Dean Blunt aka Ramirez for Rush Hour. In this hyperstitious alias he’s on a killer DiscoHouse tip shades away from Newworldaquarium but with a trippier shimmy that absolutely kills us. DO NOT sleep on this!!!

Elsewhere, the prolific Falty DL shifts his parameters to deep, broken electro-pop and boogie in his unique, atom-smashing style for Ninja Tune, while Darkestral go all cinematic with two sterling 12″s – housed in silver and gold embossed sleeves and limited to 500 copies – from Boddika and anonymous pals in deepest sci-fi mode.

Ahead of his DJ Kicks mix, Gold Panda drops an exclusive chop of smudged and bleary-eyed House music backed with ace DJ tool version and killer revisions from Peaking Lights, while GB drops some leftfield, Detroit-inspired electronics from LA housed in beautiful, hand-crafted jackets (seriously, you gotta check these out!) in a limited run of 150 copies. A big tip for fans of Drexciya or Aybee’s Afro-futurist electro.

Also out this week: new releases from Nils Frahm, Emeralds’ Steve Hauschildt, Cabaret Voltaire, James Blackshaw, Portishead, This Mortal Coil, Panda Bear, Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid, Serge Gainsbourg, Washed Out vs Clams Casino, The Big Pink vs Araabmuzik, Cottam, Kowton, Vakula, Swing Ting, Goldffinch, Synkro, The Orb, Liz Green, Alan Lomax and much much more.

Have yourselves a fabulous week…

Peace! nekkers…xx

HEATSICK
Intersex
ELECTRONIC
PAN
LP // £16.99

Steven Warwick’s Heatsick project began life back in 2006 as a series of noisy sound experiments which eventually found their way onto cassette. Living in Berlin at the time, Warwick soon got drawn in to the city’s club vortex and began shifting into a realm which, despite the odds, somehow worked in that environment, culminating in a Panorama Bar live show which has since been talked about by more people than could possibly have been there to witness it for themselves. Remarkably – the Heatsick setup involves little more than a battered old Casio keyboard and an effects pedal, but its the hypnotic layering of sound which makes for such elemental, enjoyable listening – and which has drawn so many tastemakers and taste-making labels to the Heatsick project. With a bunch of tapes and CDr’s released for the likes of Not Not Fun and Alcoholic Narcolepsy, the esteemed PAN imprint finally deliver Warwick’s debut Heatsick album proper – now finally available and presented in the label’s typically sublime screen-printed fashion. And it’s an excellent set of tracks to – exploring the liminal, hypnagogic spaces of electronic music through lathered, loop-based compositions made on the same Casio keyboard and pedal setup. They’re improvised meditations on primal, base forms of early electronics and dance music, borrowing from the Italo/Chicago axis of electrified body music – Roberto Cacciapaglia’s new wave disco gynoid, Ann Steel, and the hip-locked repetitions of Ron Hardy – to create psychedelic, psychosexual vortices for the dancefloor of the mind. This theme is made explicit by a titular reference to German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld “looking at how music and sexuality can operate in flux on a constantly sliding scale”, and implied thru an emphasis on writhing, repetitious rhythmelodic resolution. It plays out as three main pieces; the grinding, dub-bassed oscillations of ‘Ice Cream On Concrete’, the entrancing disco-not-disco ellipsis of ‘Tertiary’ and the cosmic ambiguity of ‘Von Anderen Ufer’, all defined by a rare, hallucinatory, and seductive quality transcending the borders of experimental intentions and primal instincts. Fans of everyone from Hype Williams to Dracula Lewis, Maria Minerva and Pat Maherr NEED to check it out.

PINCH & SHACKLETON
Pinch & Shackleton
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Honest Jon’s Records
2LP // £12.99

Two of dubstep’s most distinguished forces converge on an exceptional collaboration – a new highpoint in the genre’s long playing category. Between them, Pinch and Shackleton have consistently represented something more than the usual, nihilistic sensory assault of bass, synths and skullcrush percussion which dubstep has mostly calcified into, lending the style an exotic, enigmatic drama and unheimlich dread sharing more in common with Alastair Crowley than the Copperfieldian hypertheatrics of many others. Their eponymous entry is marked by a vital, considered sense of restraint, shading supernaturally fluid rhythms with an atmospheric presence which is at once lead-heavy and noxiously diffuse. It’s unnecessary to describe each track individually as their common elements are repetitiously affirmed and almost dissolute from the mass. Maybe it’s perhaps best summed as a meta-meditation of labyrinthine rhythms and spirit-summoning sonics, constantly folding into themselves and re-emerging at the start of each new piece, traversing across hundreds of miles of desolate, ancient jungle terrain with the stealth and gait of Predator on the hunt for human minds to devour. Simply put, it’s every bit as affective and enveloping as you’d imagine it to be, and then some.

PEKKA AIRAKSINEN
One Point Music
ELECTRONIC
O RECORDS
LP // £14.99

*Long-awaited remastered reissue of this ‘Holy Grail’ of primitive and experimental concrete psychedelia from 1972 – originally pressed up in an edition of just 120 copies and known to fetch crazy sums on the second hand market* Faithful sleeve recreation includes insert with liner notes translated to English* Reissue of a Finnish holy grail of primitive and experimental concrete psychedelia from 1972. Pekka Airaksinen is perhaps best known for his 1970 LP ‘Shh !’ as Sperm which is regarded as a “priceless avant-garde artefact” by the likes of Keith Fullerton Whitman, but his solo follow-up ‘One Point Music’ should be held in similarly high regard by followers of Finnish, or indeed, any form of ’70s psych experimentalism. Operating through the ’60s and early ’70s, Pekka was obviously informed and inspired by the Parisian and Cologne schools of concrete and avant-garde composition which preceded his work, building on concepts hatched by Pierre Schaeffer, John Cage, Yannis Xenakis, and Terry Riley, but with a sense of detached, individual, and almost alien expression which it could be said is unique to the Finnish character and can be heard today in the music of Uton, Mika Vainio, Es, Circle and many more. The first side breaks down to three main parts, roving across rolling, repetitive rhythms and shut-eyed guitar strokes thru patches of marshy, primitive dissonance to a stunning conclusion of icy, electro-acoustically treated strings composed in 1968 and quite possibly the main reason you need to hear this record. The other side is the awesomely blasted ‘Music For Sisyfos’, also composed in 1968. It was originally composed for a dramatic production but heard alone it’s a marvel of spiked, slow and untethered minimalist experimentalism evoking wide blue landscapes and delirious states through a mixture of Syd Barrett-esque guitar meditations and Vainio-esque electronic control. If you got a good haul of psilocybic edibles in recently, we’d strongly recommend cracking them out and checking this.

ELI KESZLER
Cold Pin
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
PAN
LP // £16.99

Fresh from his outstanding Red Horse LP on Type, Bostonian multi-instrumentalist Eli Keszler presents his dense, discombobulating installation / composition ‘Cold Pin’. Two years in the making, this near-delirious, unrelenting piece of clattering percussion and motorized strings was finally recorded in Boston’s historic Cyclorama, a massive dome built to house the Cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg painting in 1884. His innovative setup includes 14 strings ranging in length from 25 to 3 feet strung across a 15′ x 40′ curved wall and “played” by motors, connected by micro-controllers, pick-up and rca cables, to attack the strings. Also aided by an ensemble counting Geoff Mullen, Ashley Paul, Greg Kelley, Reuben Son and Benjamin Nelson, the result is a dense, spasming cluster of rapid-fire rhythms and dissonant harmonic sustain with a keening mechanical motion, blurring the distinctions between human and motorized participants to disorienting and sense-engulfing degrees. The B-side is a variation on the same theme, but with a more brittle and spacious outcome. However, that’s not to say it’s any more comfortable: on headphones it still sounds like an army of ceramic ants with steel-soled clogs scurrying across your cochlea. Eli is a graduate of the New England Conservatory in Boston where he studied with Anthony Coleman and Ran Blake.

BEN FROST & DANIEL BJARNASON
Solaris
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
BEDROOM COMMUNITY
CD // £9.99

Immense, elegiac space music from Ben Frost and composer/arranger Daníel Bjarnason. Arising out a 2010 commission from the Unsound Festival in Krakow – hometown of Stanislav Lem, writer of the original Solaris novel – Frost and Bjarnason’s SÓLARIS is also a response to Andrei Tarkovsky’s famous film version. Though outwardly a work of science fiction, SÓLARIS is really a meditation on time, memory and mortality, and Frost and Bjarnason’s music is accordingly grave, pensive and moving. They clearly revel in the possibilities of working with an orchestra, inducing the 28-piece Sinfonietta Cracovia to replicate, in acoustic “reality”, the effects of digital decay and delay, and contributing their own arsenal of electronics to the brew. The beautifully sculpted results are subtle, sensuous and often majestic, and will appeal to fans of William Basinski, Johann Johannsson, Gavin Byars, Roly Porter, Nico Muhly and Fennesz, to name but a few.

VICE VERSA
1979-1980
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
DEMOCRATIC DANCE BEAT
LP // £15.99

Much needed reissue of these vitally important pieces of Sheffield synth music history – a collection of singles and compilation tracks by the earliest incarnation of ABC. Formed in 1978 by Stephen Singleton and Mark White, Vice Versa were part of the same steel city scene which included The Human League and Clock DVA, and with the addition of Martin Fry would essentially morph into one of the enduring and influential ’80s synth-pop acts, ABC. All 15 tracks are lifted from original releases on the group’s own Neutron Records, administered by Stephen Singleton, and includes their legendary ‘Stilyagi’ 7″ songs and even rarer sounds from their ‘Music 4’ 7″, and the ‘8 Aspects Of’ cassette. No mistake, the four tracks from their ”Music 4′ 7″ are among the most definitive examples of raw, early British Synthpop you’ll find, from the cold, Kraftwerkian ‘New Girls Neutrons’ to their darkly dystopian ‘Science Fact’ – dealing with lyrical subject matter on North Sea Oil, Holocausts and Thalidomide – and the gas-mask clasping ‘Riot Squad’ or stunning synthscapes of ‘Camille’, all composed with the attitude of a lushly stoic Yorkshire futurist. Flipside contains most of the tracks from their one and only cassette ‘8 Aspects Of’, forging a yet more avant, urgent and angsty sound which would soon enough be shed in favour of Trevor Horn’s ultra polished surfaces in their soon to be ABC guise. To be fair, the pressing quality isn’t amazing, but put simply, this is some genuinely essential and seminal music which you need to hear, perhaps at the expense of fidelity.

CHRIS WATSON
El Tren Fantasma
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
Touch
CD // £10.99

A stunning tapestry of field recordings from the master, Chris Watson, with his fourth album appearance on Touch, and his first since 2003’s acclaimed Weather Report. Originally aired in a BBC Radio 4 broadcast last year, the sounds that constitute El Tren Fantasma (The Ghost Train) replicate the cross-country, coast to coast, Pacific to Atlantic FNM train route from Los Mochis to Veracruz. This line, a high watermark of Mexican engineering, no longer exists as a passenger route, but Watson beautifully recreates and evokes it using archive recordings. Watson spent a month on board the train with some of the last passengers to travel the route, when he was working as a sound recordist on the BBC TV series Great Railway Journeys. Watson fans will know what to expect: an aural adventure of great beauty, poignancy, humour and vivacity.

STEVE HAUSCHILDT
Tragedy & Geometry
ELECTRONIC
Kranky
CD // £11.99

Since Emeralds became public property some time last year, Mark McGuire and John Elliott have unleashed a hefty number of solo and extra-curricular records, but the band’s third member, Steve Hauschildt, has remained pretty quiet. Now he breaks the silence with this lovely 12-track collection, an epic synthesizer suite (what else??) that pays tribute to Greek myth and French artist Charles Meynier. It scales some heights of almost obscene beauty – ‘Blue Marlin’ and ‘Peroxide’ in particular will have you levitating – and while its arpeggiated post-kosmische tropes are largely a familiar bag, there’s an honesty and acuity to Hauschildt’s vision which makes T&G a fresh and hugely fulfilling listen. Listen out especially for ‘Overnight Venusian’ – a pulsing urban synth noir that conjures Vangelis and early C2 before dissolving into a delicious coda of astral ambience.

Sleeping Bag
Heavyweight 2CD Box // £13.99

**2CD set in a heavyweight box with unpublished photographs, artwork and testimonials, and liner notes by A.R.’s biographer Tim Lawrence** For the Arthur Russell fan they don’t come much more crucial than this! Sleeping Bag, the label who handled some of Arthur’s finest dancefloor moments, have compiled his entire output as Dinosaur L, from the classic ’24/24′ through the multiple edits of ‘Go Bang’ and ‘In The Corn Belt’ together with his lesser known productions as Felix, Sounds Of JHS 126 Brooklyn, Bonzo Goes To Washington, and Indian Ocean. Some of the latter tracks were collected on ‘The Sleeping Bag Sessions’ 2LP a couple of years back, but they’re not on a blag here – the production values for this box are entirely worthy of Arthur’s recognised status as a genuine musical auteur, and in our opinion at least, one of the most important artists of the last 40 years. It should bear repeating that this set includes some of the finest, most original and eternally beguiling bodies of work in modern music, so go figure. Out-and-out essential. Tracklisting in full: 1. Dinosaur L – #1 (You’re Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean) 2. Dinosaur L – #5 (Go Bang!) 3. Dinosaur L – #2 (No, Thank You) 4. Dinosaur L – #7 5. Dinosaur L – #3 (In The Corn Belt) 6. RAMIREZ (HYPE WILLIAMS)
A.M.Y.
TECHNO / HOUSE
Rush Hour
12″ // £6.99

Ramirez is the hyperstitious alias of Dean Blunt, aka half of Hype Williams, for this killer one-sided platter on Rush Hour. It features some dude recounting a “fateful encounter with “this bitch” he used to see” over tape-worn, uptempo discoHouse akin to Newworldaquarium’s ‘Trespassers’, but with a shiftier shimmy. It’s 100% mint and we’d recommend you snaffle one now or weep over discogs prices later!

FALTY DL
Atlantis EP
TECHNO / HOUSE
Ninja Tune
12″ // £4.99

Is there no end to FaltyDL’s productivity? We’re not complaining, ‘cos he doesn’t seem to be running out of ideas. ‘Atlantis’ heads for the dawn-bating zone somewhere between broken beat, deep electro and Kompakt pop, while ‘Can’t Stop The Prophet’ nods to the LA beat-heads with its tough, shuffling drums, smoky keys and strings, before an unexpected coda detours into Zed Bias or even Squarepusher-esque, jazz-flecked drum ‘n bass. ‘My Light, My Love’ does the deep boogie thing before the EP draws to a close with the more minimal, dance-ready ‘The Sale Ends’, a glitchy, stepping house cut somewhere between Akufen, MJ Cole and Aardvarck.

TRANSPORTATION AAD
Last Train To Lexington / U.F.Unk
ELECTRONIC
DARKESTRAL
12″ // £8.99

*Strictly limited to 500 copies in reverse Board Sleeve with Gold Metallic foil embossed sleeve* Boddika morphs into his Transportation AAD guise for two stunning Electro excursions on Darkestral. Erring close to the label’s sci-fi aesthetic, Alex Green (Boddika) interprets two short film script proposals by his label manager Drkstrl, transposing their perceived moods and atmosphere in audio format. A-side is the visceral, vice-like tension of ‘Last Train To Lexington’, possibly imagining a 5am ride on a rattly monorail above a steampunk metropolis, lights flickering while chain-wielding future-ruffians approach from either end of the carriage… Flipside ‘U.F. Unk’ could track the docking sequence for hiss AAD cruiser, gauging the depth with subsonic Electro pulses before engaging with speaker-buckling bass and unfeasibly hard-edged drums to immersive effect. Strictly limited copies – TIP!

ELECTRONIC
DARKESTRAL
12″ // £8.99

*Strictly limited to 500 copies in reverse Board Sleeve with Gold Metallic foil embossed sleeve* A year since Rockwell’s outstanding ‘Reverse Engineering’, Darkestral present the 2nd of two drops from their clandestine cabal. Operating as Transportation AAD, Boddika and (label head) Drkstr offer the drizzly sci-fi melancholy of ‘Pagoda’, while Boddika goes dolo as Grey Goo with the 3D sculpted decompression sequence ‘Transmissions’ and the pensive, Made-style electro-scape ‘See Me’. However, the very best track comes from anonymous entity Vaalhaala with the command centre vista of ‘Phaethon’, a stunning arrangement of searching synth arpeggios and starburst dynamics with a cinematic scope. Strictly limited copies – TIP!

GOLD PANDA / PEAKING LIGHTS
An Iceberg Hurled Northward Through Clouds (Peaking Lights Mixes)
ELECTRONIC
K7
12″ // £5.49

Gold Panda heralds his DJ-Kicks mix with the smoky, bleary-eyed and chime-heavy house cut ‘An Iceberg Hurled Northward Through Clouds’, which sounds like a bud-assisted hook-up between Four Tet, Pantha Du Prince, Nathan Fake and early Hot Chip. The stripped-down ‘Through Clouds’ version is conceived more as a DJ tool, and you even get a short stem track isolating the kalimba tones that made the original fly. Of less contextual and more immediate interest are the two remixes from Not Not Fun’s (latterly Domino’s) foremost dub psych twosome, Peaking Lights. They really deliver the goods across both their vocal and dub versions, cultivating a freeform but well-rehearsed sound which, like their celebrated 936 LP, is at once dance-focussed and out-of-time trippy. Well good.

CHRIS WATSON
El Tren Fantasma (The Signal Man’s Mix)
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
Touch
12″ // £8.99

Holy crap – Chris Watson on vinyl? Is it true? Well yeah, Touch are really treating us with this one, and veteran field recordist Watson has pulled out all the stops for this very special release. Whereas usually Watson’s recordings are ‘pure’ representations of the subject matter, here we are presented with two ‘mixes’ of audio collected as he recorded for a BBC documentary. The difference in approach can be heard almost instantly as the train’s engine forms rhythmic pulses beneath what sounds like manipulations of the train horn itself. This collision of drone and environmental sound is nothing new, but Watson does it with such skill that it’s hard not to be totally taken aback by the sheer quality of the sounds. On the flipside, the harmonic elements are almost removed entirely to allow the crushing engine noise to take centre stage, bellowing and wheezing like the Wolf Eyes record you never heard. Sterling stuff as always from Watson then, and all the better for being on vinyl! Highly recommended.

NILS FRAHM
Juno
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
ERASED TAPES
7″ // £6.49

**UPFRONT EXCLUSIVE. Includes free download code redeemable from the label** “A balm for troubled minds”, “Unparalleled”, and “Poised to become something of a sensation”, are all phrases used to describe the unmistakably beautiful music of Nils Frahm. We’re used to hearing Nils tickling the ivories but for ‘Juno’ he was encouraged by close friend and label mentor Peter Broderick to sketch something for the titular instrument. The result is two utterly sublime pieces transposing the skills of Nils onto an instrument he rarely uses, but evidently should do more often. There’s an almost Aphexian melancholy to both sides, which is about the highest compliment we could imagine, and also reminisces of BJ Nilsen and Stilluppsteypa’s ‘Space Finale’ trimmed to fit the format, but ultimately there’s a subtlety of character and articulation which places it quite firmly at the forefront of Frahm’s personal cabinet. Mournfully lush music, highly recommended to fans of Roedelius, AFX, Debussy.

If we’re not mistaken, this is the first new Interdimensional Transmission in over 3 years, but it was evidently worth the wait. A-side is a svelte, muscular, bass driven new wave disco groove, equal parts vintage Detroit and downtown New York flavours with absolutely killer drums and exuding typical Ectomorph class. B-side is ‘Eskink’, leabing heavier…

Build A House ft. Hard Ton (Prins Thomas / Tensnake Mixes)
Internasjonal
12″ // £7.99

Fine, elegant House music from Italian-via-Berlin duo Discodromo, including Prins Thomas Dub and Tensnake remix. The original’s a smooth ride across bubbling bassline, slick rhythmic gear changes and warm chords, which Prins Thomas evens out for a more smudged, rolling effect and Tensnake jacks up with pianos and shiftier Jack beats for a proper ’91-at-the-Haç vibe.

Four fragrant funk and soul edits on this new series, from slo-jamz to mid-tempo boogie and uptempo swingers. Italian-via-Amsterdam, Lorenzo Mangani is on the edit button, but we’re really not so sure what he’s touching up. A-side is the spooked-out soul of ‘The Queen’, a psyched-out soul groove with killer vocal treatments, besides the uptempo boogie stomp of ‘Party’ which delivers what it promises. Flipside is the slinky lick of…

Lodged somewhere between the R&B heart-wrench of Holy Other and Dam Mantle’s spiralling electronics, the track flips from mournful, shuffling melancholy to double-timed soul surge, attempting to encapsulate the manic heat and emotion of a whole night out in three-and-a-half-minutes. They incubated and gestated the 200 Years album over a period of eleven months inside a former toolshed in Seattle, syncing their deft fingerpicking and shimmering amp hum sculptures to Elisa’s comforting vocals, with subtle layers of harmonium, organs and chamberlin adding a chiffon depth depth. Lovely.

Polyfonia
Crunchy Frog
CD // £10.99

‘Polyfonia’ is the second album by Jóhann Jóhannsson’s prog-synth ensemble. It’s a typically ebullient effort, full of uplifting energy and cheeky computer game references written into complex arrangements. For the best taste go straight to the frothy opener ‘Babbage’, then check the dramatic propulsion of ‘Pentatronik’ and the fist-pumping sci-fi action of ‘Síríus Alfa’, and by then you should really know if you’re into them or not.

Important Records
CD // £13.99

“Some bands produce a CD every week; by now it seems ‘normal’ to have three year gaps in releasing records for Beequeen, which is a fresh antidote to the music business of more = more. For Beequeen, like good wine, things mature given more time. Whereas ‘Sandancing’ (2008) featured Olga Wallis a guest singer, on this new album she’s a fully fledged bandmember, adding her beautiful voice to Beequeen’s off…

BEDEVIL
CD // £8.99

“With its dark electronics, visceral lyrics and cinematic guitar lines, PumaJaw’s new album moves on from their previous alt-folk influences and burns with a new, electric intensity. John Wills’ (ex-Loop) swaps acoustic guitar for electric and rediscovers the ritualistic drumming he was known for in the 80s and 90s, to make a soundtrack that conjures up unsettling dream sequences. Pinkie Maclure abandons the folk influences of recent years and returns…

Both Ways Open Jaws
Village Green
CD // £8.99

“Technically accomplished and full of rich orchestration and electronic flourishes, ‘Both Ways Open Jaws’ somehow manages to keep a lightness of touch and an instant pop appeal, no doubt thanks to Olivia’s bewitching vocals and songwriting skills. She veers from the primal, invoking the spectres of Fever Ray and Bjork with the percussion led ‘Slippery Slope’, replete with tribal chanting, and lead single ‘Too Insistent’ with its tirelessly catchy propulsive…
THE PARASITES OF THE WESTERN WORLD

De Stijl Records

De Stijl’s excavation of The Parasites Of The Western World turns up the lead single for their second album. Original released circa 1980-81, ‘Politico’ opened the B-side to ‘Substrata’ with a rippin’ New Wave roller full of glam stomp, proggy arrangement and punky attitude. The synth-fuelled instrumental B-side was exclusive to the single, and as tradition dictates, far more interesting, featuring Terry Censky and Patrick Burke in an ebullient symphony…

VILLE LEINONEN
Auringonsäde / Pommisuoja
Fonal
CD // £11.99

‘Auringonsade / Pommisuoja’ is Finnish singer-songwriter Ville Leinonen’s thirteenth album since his acclaimed 1997 debut, and you’ll be happy to know it’s still just as peculiar as we’ve come to expect to him and the Fonal imprint. I say he’s a singer songwriter, but his twisting, turning songs are framed in a haze of broken electronics, Northern European folk music instrumentation and cascades of bells. Add a mist of tape…

2nd single from Ernest Greene’s debut album as Washed Out features ‘Amor Fati’ and exclusive new track ‘Call It Off’ backed with remixes by Clams Casino and Au Revoire Simone. Killer slow-house grinder from Joe Kowton, featuring a tungsten-tipped Rivet remix. ‘Dirty Little Bomb’ is maybe the slowest groove in Kowton’s small but well formed arsenal, doffing a cap to the likes of Workshop’s Madteo or Kassem Mosse with dusted beats and bleary-eyed melody buoyed by a stumbling subbass.
