Born in Romania, but living since the age of 12 in Italy, Peter ‘Legal‘ Andrei is the new interesting discovery by the respected drum ‘n’ bass imprint BNC Express. We had a quick chat with Peter, following the review of his brand new EP “More Than You Need”. I guess that many lovers of the genre will be so delighted that they’ll hope this guy will keep on quenching their infinite thirst for well-forged tunes.

interview picture 1Chain D.L.K.: Hiya there! How are you?

Legal: I am pretty good, thank you! I’m feeling really excited for this new EP!

Chain D.L.K.: It’s not the first time you signed some stuff on the excellent BNC Express, is it?

Legal: Yes, it’s true! My first single on BNC was “Take me Away” with the fantastic voice of Sinéad McCarthy.

Chain D.L.K.: Let’s immediately focus on “More Than You Need”…why such a title? Who is the ‘you’? What do you think that ‘you’ could need?

Legal: The name of the EP was inspired by the reality we are living. We are focused on material things instead of what we need.
I think that you have to be ready to lose everything you’ve got just for a better life.

Chain D.L.K.: …And why did you call yourself Legal?

Legal: You are not the first one to ask me this question! The answer is simple: I like how it sounds. It’s not such an important thing for me…music matters!

Chain D.L.K.: Any ‘illegal’ alter-ego?

Legal: No, one is more than enough!

Chain D.L.K.: The qualitative level of each track is very high… first of all, which equipment/tools did you use to make the sounds?

Legal: Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. During the years, I’ve built my equipment piece by piece. I use Ableton, a MIDI keyboard mpk25 AKAI, Roland AC-40, audio box Focusrite Scarlett i6, Adam 5f and the last entry is the Virus TI snow (I love it!).

interview picture 2Chain D.L.K.: Besides technical aspects, is there any story behind any of the tunes you’d like to share with our readers?

Legal: Francesco (DJ Promenade, BNC’s owner) always told me that the most important thing is to finish the track. It might sound strange, but for a producer, it’s tough to listen to a tune and say, “Ok, it’s done.”

About my tunes, I can tell you I love to sample vinyl, and I did it for “Red Fox”. For other tunes, I’ve used almost entirely the Virus.
If you want to invest some money in your equipment, I recommend it; you will not complain 🙂

Chain D.L.K.: Did you play any track during a live set/party or see them played? According to your perception, which was the one that sounds more compelling?

Legal: Yes, of course. I think “Ginger” had a great feedback.

Chain D.L.K.: Any feedback that leaves you astonished by other more or less notorious producers, DJs or listeners?

Legal: I received a lot of nice comments: from Ben (Drumsound), DJ Phantasy, Storm, ak1200, New Forms…
But aside from these amazing DJs and producers, I received an incredible amount of good feedback from people running web radio stations and podcasts: I mean, these people don’t know me, but they will push my music, and this is amazing.
And – at the end – I received the support of the Italian scene… My scene!

Chain D.L.K.: Some more general questions… First of all, what’s your opinion about the current state of health of drum ‘n’ bass?

Legal: In Italy, we are trying hard to keep the scene alive. In other places, it’s different; it’s more accessible and it is easier to attend a party or listen to it on the radio. I think that drum ‘n’ bass is a complete sound, you just have to discover it.

Chain D.L.K.: Francesco, the label boss of BNC Express, is one that has shared far-sighted sonic outputs with his own imprint. Do you agree? How did you meet him?

Legal: Francesco is totally crazy. I never met him actually, but we can laugh until we cry every time we speak. I  knew him thanks to another producer that I love: Bayou. I think Francesco is a talented producer working hard on his label and pushing a lot of new, talented artists.

interview picture 3Chain D.L.K.: How did you get closer to drum ‘n’ bass music?

Legal: Just a friend at school. One tune was enough.

Chain D.L.K.: Do you follow any other style?

Legal: Of course! I think every producer has to!  Inspiration helps you to start a new project…

Chain D.L.K.: Any work in progress?

Legal: Yes, I’m working for another Italian label called Singularity: but it is definitely a “darker” work.

Chain D.L.K.: Imagine you could pick any producer to remix any of your track. Any favs?

Legal: Just a name: BREAK.
