Chain D.L.K.: Nihil Novi Sub Sole means “nothing new under the sun”. What made you choose this moniker?
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: The name partly came out of the blue, and yet I felt attracted to it, due to what it characterizes. The concepts which I try to convey in NNSS aren’t exactly new to mankind, but I try to give them a certain twist, which should catch the listener’s attention, and therefore the name also becomes a bit cynical.
Chain D.L.K.: “Jupiter temple” is your first album. What does Jupiter mean to you, besides being the forefather of all the Gods?
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: Jupiter represents all given thoughts of mankind in all it’s facets. In combination with the word “temple”, I’ve tried to create a metaphor about the one world one can’t go to except for in a idealistic form. However, this ideal should not necessarily represent the only existing one, and this is taken into consideration in the concept of the album…
Chain D.L.K.: What kind of experience have you had with Deinonychus/Bethlehem and what would you like to achieve with N.N.S.S.?
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: With Deinonychus and Bethlehem I’ve had an almost 2 decade long experience as Songwriter, Lyricist, and Performer and we sold many metal oriented CD’s. Those two bands did shape me as a musician and also as a person, and gifted me with a life long experience no one can take from me. With NNSS I try to achieve a similar experience but with lesser ambitions, as the metal-scene in general is a much bigger market with lots more demand and ambition, in a different way of course…NNSS has a more serene approach than the above mentioned bands… with different ideals.
Chain D.L.K.: Is there any kind of link between your new project and the previous ones besides the music, which is different?
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: I reckon that I have the same approach in composing the music for either NNSS as I did for Deinonychus, hence the difference in style of music. I think the most obvious link between the both of bands, are the emotions derived from the compositionsɉ۬
Chain D.L.K.: The tracks of the album have dramatic ambience as well as a powerful pounding sound. What kind of emotions did you want to address?
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: I’ve tried to capture a mixture of fear and drama in the songs, which perfectly reflects the concept of the songs. I think I succeeded pretty well in my efforts, as many people find the overall sound very dramatic and overwhelming.
Chain D.L.K.: I read (and wrote in my review), that your tracks were born as musical comments to events or situations in which men were finding themselves being pushed to the extreme. What were you trying to achieve exactly?
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: Fear and disillusionment. Because it perfectly adds to the overall picture of the album.
Chain D.L.K.: What were you interested in? The decay of modern society or the tortured souls that are victims of such process?
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: I think a combination of both would suit most perfectly. It seems that people in general never learn from their incompetent behavior. This mostly is the result of greed and power, which makes analyzing this subject very interesting in general. Also from a historical point of view.
Chain D.L.K.: “Obedience to None” makes me think that you’re against modern slavery. Do you think that common citizens would ever rise against their oppressors?
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: People do rise against oppression, but without success. I think it is in our interest, and by “our” I mean all of us who live in the civilized world, that things go and stay as they are, as we benefit from that in every way. If one thinks about that in a rational way, one will see that this is a rather sad development, but that is how it is… You can take somebody’s life, but not their pride I’d say…
Chain D.L.K.: Don’t you think that it could be a double edged sword to use Mussolini samples? People might misinterpret why you did it and take it as a political move…
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: Yes, the use of the Mussolini samples could be misinterpreted, but I simply have taken the risk, as it was worthwhile to give my own edge to the whole… The song “Fellonia Con Sangue” should rather reflect the backstabbing or hypocritical character which are to be found in so called blood-brotherhood.
Chain D.L.K.: Recently you joined Deutsch-SudOst. Can you tell us something more about them and about what you’d like to do for/with them?
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: Deutsch-SudOst is an Eastern German Martial outfit with an exclusive sound and character if you ask me. They have some tracks online in their MySpace profile. They’ve asked me to join their ranks in order to complete their sound and hopefully being an addition to their future live efforts!
Chain D.L.K.: Future plans regarding your musical projects?
Nihil Novi Sub Sole: At the moment, I have put together a live line up for NNSS. On board I have taken Graetorius which also plays in Deutsch-SudOst, Jurgen Bartsch (Bethlehem) and Roel Graafmans from the Dutch Industrial band Embolus… We’ve recently started massive rehearsals, in order to come up with some live dates in mid and late 2010… Furthermore a new Mini CD is in the making…
