Re-Membering Dwayne Goettel: Prior to joining Skinny Puppy, Dwayne Goettel was a member of the young electronic-horror act Psyche. Although Goettel and Psyche parted ways before any Psyche releases were put out, the masters containing Dwayne Goettel’s performances were preserved in the Psyche vaults for years. Now, on the 15th anniversary of Goettel’s untimely passing in 1995, Artoffact Records and Psyche have hand-picked the most interesting tracks to release Re-Membering Dwayne, the original Psyche-Dwayne Goettel sessions. Beloved Enemy is the second album from Germany’s Jesus on Extasy, a band that has become synonymous with industrial-metal on both sides of the Atlantic. With their third album MONSTER, The Garland Cult say goodbye to their audience with ten new tracks which span from their distinctive dance style to acoustic ballads passing through covers of Scott Walker’s “30th Century man” and Holly Johnson’s “Feel good”. There’s a light melancholy that permeates the track listing, as we approach to the end of the CD as they were aware that “The raven” (an atmospheric tune with synth pads, piano and vocals) was their last song, so they wanted to make the listener remember them as one would remember a solar eclipse and for that reason, that song is touching and dreamy at the same time.  Anyway… Let’s check with Aidan what the album is about and what he and Lar are heading for in the near future…

Chain D.L.K.: “Monster” is your third The Garland Cult album. How would you describe it to someone who listened only to your main band Empire State Human?

The Garland Cult: I would imagine that it is vocally similar obviously, but musically wider and lyrically more glamorous or sensual sounding. Organic at times but with a strong dance/electro backing. It’s warmer then ESH in that we deliberately went for lots of pad sounds and string layers. “Monster” has a touch of every decade we’re influenced from… 40s/50s/60s/70s/80/s90s/00s.

Chain D.L.K.: “Beautiful Girls” and “Perfect Beat (take me to LA)” are dance songs but the whole album sounds like a solid blend of all the various musical genres you’ve completed so far (with ESH, The Garland Cult and your solo album). Is that something you wanted to achieve?

The Garland Cult: It developed a sense of wideness as the recordings went on. It was our goal to mix organics and electronic music is a very special and commercial sounding way. That was certainly a decision made early on. I let Dave at Ninthwave know about that and to be honest, he was sceptical and didn’t think we’d deliver an album that would fit with the established club sound of the first two TGC albums. Both Dave, Lar and I were really happy to achieve the balance. Dave’s only regret now
is that we won’t be making a fourth. But we’ve left three strong albums for people to listen back on.

Chain D.L.K.: Why is this album is going to be your last one under this moniker? Is because of the fact that ESH and The Garland Cult now have the same line up?

The Garland Cult: That has a lot to do with confirming we were right to stop now. We always planned three albums and said this to Ninthwave early on. When Seán decided to leave ESH it really made the decision more valid, as I guess we would have stopped recording as The Garland Cult when Seán left ESH as it would be pointless being two groups with the same line up. Dynamics would dictate one had to go. I think it was Oscar Wilde who said that about the wall paper in his dingy rented Paris flat and himself … “One of us has to go”.

Chain D.L.K.: On this album you covered Scott Walker (“30th Century man”) and Holly Johnson (“Feel good”). What do you appreciate about these artists?

The Garland Cult: One word regarding both artists … integrity. I love the romance and energy in both Scott and Holly .. I think Holly would actually make some excellent covers of Scott… I contacted Holly with our version of “Feel Good” and he was both surprised and happy with the finished version. It’s sounds something like The Velvet Undergound meets Kraftwerk to my ears. We recorded “30th Century Man” with Robert Kiraly (UK based DJ). Robert completed some excellent remixes of the track we recorded with ex-Kraftwerk Wolfgang Flur (with ESH), so we hit it off and made plans for a collaboration.

Chain D.L.K.: What can you say about the fact that it’s gonna be released only as digital download? Isn’t that a disappointment?

The Garland Cult: Yea I can see that it appears like a disappoint at not every album making it onto CD also. But Dave is planning a short CD run with a manufacturing company for “Monster”. It’s not an Amazon CD but limited edition run. That will be pleasing as we all feel “Monster” deserves some sort CD pressing. Even a limited edition one.

Chain D.L.K.: The album starts with a number of upbeat tunes and then ends with a bit of melancholy and the synth dramatics of “The Raven”. Is there a sort of underlying theme that you followed to create these tracks?

The Garland Cult: As recording came to a close I think there was a sense of sadness too. I mean TGC may have only be around as a band for a short period of time (5 years) but I think our output was of a band around for about 8. Also it was always meant to be a fun project and something we could work on when ESH weren’t recording. But funnily enough recording as TGC became too much fun and it began to hinder our enthuasism for ESH. Taking all that into account, the sadness on the final track of the album is quite real. Music is a real looking glass into how we work. I can listen to each of the various CDs I’ve been involved in and hear moods and heartaches or happiness and joy.

Chain D.L.K.: Have you completed a balance or viewpoint on The Garland Cult as personal experience? Can you share it with us?

The Garland Cult: To obtain such an opinion we emailed all our friends, myspace members etc to ask for questions. We did this to really nail the heart of the project by the questions of others. Our answers make very interesting reading and when we’ve completed all the promo for “Monster” we’re going to add the answers onto our myspace as a final goodbye of sorts. I say of sorts, as we are in talks about a digital best of for TGC in 2011. We’ve a few unreleased tracks to include too.

Chain D.L.K.: What are you working at? I know that you are writing new songs for Empire State Human…

The Garland Cult: Yes, myself and Lar have begun work of a new ESH studio album called “The Art”. It’s coming along very nicely and we plan to have a new digital single out this year with “The Art” landing on CD in 2011. We’re working towards including a bonus mini album with it. It’s to be a space themed short album. It’s quite an undertaking but we view each new album now as potentially our last, so it’s basically give as much new and diverse music as we can each time around.

Chain D.L.K.: What about the other projects? Any collaboration in the pipeline?

The Garland Cult: I’ve completed an under the name Sebastian and the Dream. The album is called “The naming of Blue” and I’m not sure when it will be released though. I’ve a myspace set up for it www.myspace.com/sebastianandthedream I co-wrote and supplied vocals for a song with Impostor called “Five Minutes”… not sure when that will be released. I did a remix of it as Sebastian and the Dream which was great fun. It’s an Italo Disco flavoured, so might appeal to the synthpop crowd maybe.

Chain D.L.K.: Anything else you’d like to add?

The Garland Cult: Just to thank everyone who’s shown interest in TGC and people like yourself who actually got TGC’s music from the first release! It’s always been a pleasure being interviewed by you and I hope that enthuasism comes across. Mux Mool’s music practically screams “open source.” There’s something in its scrappy, kitchen-sink construction and schizophrenic, grab-anything-that’s-around spirit that begs reinterpretation, recombining, remixing. Enter the Wax Rose Saturday EP, out today and the follow-up to Skulltaste, Brian Lindgren’s full-length debut as Mux Mool. Seven remixes, one new track, and endless insight into the fearless producer’s multi-faceted work.

It’s telling that Wax Rose Saturday’s opening track, Mux Mool’s “remux” of Skulltaste ’s “Wax Rose Saturday”, is barely a distant cousin of the original. Slinking around a sly piano sample with spiraling vocoder in tow, Mux’s new “Wax Rose” is the warm, analog answer to its blippy, bitcrushed source. Daso’s rerub of “Enceladus” is a standout, twisting the original’s winking disco workout into a nocturnal tech-house banger, all elastic basslines and dubby keys; Shigeto’s take on “Morning Strut” adds polyrhythmic percussion and hard-panned audio tricks to the track’s piano-led melancholy. Wax Rose Saturday ’s new track, the slow-burning “Valley Girls”, is classic Mux Mool, located somewhere between West Coast ‘90s hip-hop and Miami Vice. Wax Rose Saturday is available at The Ghostly Store, iTunes and other digital retailers now.

On another note, In this fan made action-packed video for Mux Mool’s “Hog Knuckles,” vintage Bruce Lee clips (and a few medieval sword-fights) match the track’s burbling electro strut shot for digital shot. The video’s creators overlay the chaos with Mux Mool’s signature skulls and video-game imagery, encapsulating the Brooklyn producer’s cut-and-paste aesthetic with the focus of a hundred-hand slap.

Born at the end of 2006 in the science city of Jena, Germany, from an idea of Nico Jagiella (SLF) and Robert Witschakowski (The Exaltics), Solar One Music started to spread its music soon after releasing “Ten Million Light Years” by The Exaltics (www.the-exaltics.com). It was a USB Stick with a full flash based application, like a mini website (and then re-issued as a limited CD-R). It contains three tracks (“Ten Million Light Years”, “What’s Wrong”, “High Voltage Accelerator”) and a version of the main track remixed by Kan3da.

Right from the very beginning, the label’s mission reveals itself thanks to dark electro sounds reminiscent of Detroit techno sounds. Robert uses analog dry beats along with warm pads to create a cinematic alien atmosphere that sounds like humans should fear a new threat.

Crotaphytus (www.myspace.com/crotaphytus) is the second band to be signed by the label and it’s a duo formed by Nico and Robert. “The Bite of the Reptiles EP”, like all of the first eleven releases on the label, is a limited to 100 CD-R copies with special customized packaging (in this case a metal box) and contains five original tracks (“Crotaphytus Theme”, “Rhynchocephalia”, “Sauromalus Obsesus”, “Sceloporus Malachiticus” and “Varanus Acanthurus”) plus an intro by The Exaltics and four remixes by Aliensextoy, Komarken Electronics, Franck Sarrio and CPU. The release, besides its menacing imaginary of a hungry giant reptile looking for food, offers cinematic instrumentals with electro influences and dark obsessive sci-fi atmospheres with some musical references to the “water sound” ambience of Drexcyia.

“Strange Tales from the Future Vol.1″ is the third Solar One Music release and it’s their first compilation. On this one you find three tracks by each of the following artists: Antizero (www.myspace.com/antizeronow), CPU (www.myspace.com/cpuberlin), Komarken Electronics (www.myspace.com/komarkenelectronics) and The Exaltics. Antizero tracks sound like they’re coming from a cool electro record with deep filtered vocals, bouncing bass lines and dark atmospheres. After their debut, the Exaltics started to also release their music on other labels such as Z-bop, Transient Force, Militant Science, Bunker Records and Last Known Trajectory and in doing so offered more of their minimal experimental electronic sounds made of chirping sounds, analog pads, syncopated rhythms and electro bass lines. Komarken Electronics are from Sweden and released a CD-R on Stilleben Records in 2007, their electro style is ready to make you die happy thanks to bouncing bass lines, upbeat rhythms and spacey synth pads. CPU didn’t have any prior releases, since they had only participated to compilations, but “Return to Aquacity”, “Landorian Deepseaterraforming” and “BX-3″ are really good tracks that span from Detroit techno to electro with fat bass lines.

Next Solar One Music, being true to their motto “something different, something special”, released a new Crotaphytus EP (their release #3.5). This time Nico and Robert for the four tracks of “Feed Meeeee E.P.“ focused on fast obsessive tunes with minimal structure and aggressive atmospheres which turn kinda exotic on the final track (try to imagine yourself in a primitive jungle trying to avoid being the Crotaphytus’ meal).

The fourth label’s release is another compilation, but this time each of the eleven bands involved get only one track each. Packaged in a metal box with an exclusive pin inside, “SOM Compilation Vol.1“ presented tracks by Aliensextoy & X-Beat, AS 1, Clatterbox, Equitant, The Exaltics, Franck Sarrio, Gab.Gato, Goliath, Impakt, Lightyear, Sprawl and SLF. The tracks span from the experimental techno by Exaltic, Clatterbox, Goliath, Sprawl, AS1 to the electro sound of Impakt, Gab.Gato passing through the electro experimental extravaganza by Lightyear, just to name few.

The Raw Mechanics (www.myspace.com/rawmechanics) / Crotaphytus split CD is the fifth release and it opens with “Cycle Of Life”, an atmospheric tense mid tempo. The second track follows a similar path, with a tense atmosphere and synth pads. Arnold Steiner, a.k.a. AS1 and boss of Transient Force, did a great job creating this with Robert and Nico. They started the album with minimal atmospheres which sound full of pathos where mid tempo rhythms and tiny melodies sound like a good soundtrack for a horror movie. After a couple of tracks each, the atmosphere changes and techno rhythms take a hold turning it into a sort of psychedelic electronic vertigo. Obsessive atmospheres will make you feel dizzy until the electro tune titled “Y3″ (a collaboration between Crotaphytus and The Exaltics, a sort of short circuit, since Robert is in both the projects). Two remixes close the release: Faceless Mind (www.myspace.com/facelessmind) remixing “Cold Nights” and Manasyt (www.myspace.com/manasyt) who turned “Tracheloptychus” into an electro experimental looping tune with minimal noisy variations.

AS1’s (www.myspace.com/as1electro) “Man verse Machine” (a.k.a. “MVSM”) is the sixth release on the label. This time it is a proper album with eleven new tunes and a remix of “Lets be honest” reworked by

The Exaltics (obsessive and robotic, it kept the original atmosphere but changed its skin). On this album Arnold plays with Detroit techno influenced experimental electro which recall Arpanet (thanks to cool melodies and filtered vocals) on tracks like “In the End”, “Reflective Reflection” and “Tinman Boogie”. Arnold also plays with industrial atmospheres on the metallic “Pounding Steel”.

Galaxian (www.myspace.com/galaxian), Impakt (www.myspace.com/impakt), Lightyear (www.myspace.com/lightyear) and Manasyt are the bands featured in “Strange tales from the future Vol.2” with three tracks each. Impakt is the project of Jørgen Indal, a guy from Norway who released a 12″ in 2008 for Breakin’ Records and has a freely downloadable album at Envmod. His tracks reminded me a bit of early Luke Eargoggle but more electro. His style is dark and melodic with dry sounds and bouncing rhythms. All the way from Sidney, Lightyear, produced three tracks which sound dark and exotic at the same time (a sort of dark Miami electro) and have just released their debut EP which is available in digital format (7digital is the cheapest place I found) and as 12″ on Bang Gang. You should already know Manasyt as they have quite some release in their discography. On this compilation Petar provides us with three tracks of electro obsession with syncopated rhythms and fragmented looping synth sequences. I know Galaxian from the tracks he released on Black Montanas and here you can find three fast tunes which seem to have be recorded during a live session as they tend to be hypnotic (a bit acid) with alternation of rhythms and quirky sounds. Sprawl’s (www.myspace.com/plasmek) “Mechanic Phunk“ is the eight release of the label. Project of an Italian guy called Andrea Benedetti (he just finished writing a book about the history of techno music called “Mondo Techno”) who released four 12″ during the 90’s on Plasmek (his own label). After some years of inactivity, this album delivers ten new tracks of acid techno with dark electro inserts. Rhythm is the main element of Sprawl’s music and the tracks are ready to be played at a rave party. The Exaltics and K1 remixes of the main track and of “X-51″ close the album with fast electro/techno sounds.

It’s time for a new compilation and “SOM Compilation Vol.2″ presents thirteen tracks and twelve bands (the last tune is by The Exaltics featuring Gunnar Malich) of which some never had a song released on Solar One Music. Alex Norinh, AS1, Beta Evers, Cestrian, Crotaphytus, The Exaltics, Manasyt, Hadamard, Koova, Nimoy, SLF, Shemale, Spartacus and System Insurgent are the ones that will please you with dark mid tempo tracks. I don’t know if the label gave some instructions to the bands, but the compilation’s track list is kinda balanced, as if they all wrote a track for the same movie’s soundtrack. Dark electro is the the key of the whole CD and the bands are giving their best to make this a great album.

“The Freefall / Code Reference” by The Exaltics / AS1 is the tenth release and it is a double CD / double album package. “The Freefall” is the third album by The Exaltics (after “Invasion” and “The Arriving” released in 2008 and 2009 by Transient Force) and on this one the aliens take a hold on humans thanks to “The Beginning”, “Don’t Ask Me Why”, “Different Places”, “No Return (quiet version)”, “Journey to Jupiter”, “The Conscience Shift”,”Apocalipsic”, “The freefall”, “Slipping Away” and “Discussion-Chamber”. The track listing, as you’ll see, has a kind of chronologic sequence and musically the tracks mix dark obsessive electro with Detroit techno intuition. This is probably The Exaltics’s best release to date.

From Miami, AS1 spread their sound throughout the universe reaching aliens and robots everywhere thanks to ten tracks of dark electro Detroit techno where 4/4 beats lead the dances of mid tempo electro atmospheric tunes (only “Shit Gets Lost” is sounding a bit more acid with upbeat tempos and cutoff filters working hard).

The eleventh release isn’t out yet and it will be the first 12″ for Solar One Music: a new Crotaphytus EP.

The twelfth release is a new 12″ EP by The Exaltics and it will be out at the end of August. It’s titled “The Clash EP” and is a limited run of 150 copies. Two days ago I received a promo and here’s what you’ll find: a new version of “Journey to Jupiter”, “The Crash” (a mid tempo menacing robotic tune), “The Last Try (AS1 Remix)” (the remix of the second track you’ll find on the B side; on this version we have as usual dark electronic atmospheres in balance between future and mystery); “Reticulation Notes” is a slow tempo syncopated Detroit techno tune with ambient synth pads while the closing “The last Try” is a slow intriguing track with raw synth sounds and minimal melodies. Another fine release by Solar One Music which finally reached the vinyl format. A note to the reader: most of the releases I talked about are limited to 100 copies CD-R’s and for that reason now are out of print, but you can find all those in digital format at Clone Digital Distribution and other fine distributors.

Last but not least let’s talk about the “Unhoerbar Red Edition series”: a techno, electronica, electro sub label born to press up techno, electro and electronica. The red edition series sports four Mini CD’s of artists who collaborated with Solar One Music (Impakt and Komarken Electronics) and artists that Robert and Nico strongly wanted for this project (Kragg www.kragg.fr and Zarkoff www.myspace.com/3apkob). Each of them provided five original tracks and got remixed by Hadamard (Komarken Electronics), Mitchell Chevalet (Kragg), Sneak Thief (Zarkoff) and The Exaltics (Impakt). Now let’s talk to them directly:

Chain D.L.K.: How have you and Robert met and why did you start Solar One Music and your musical projects?

Nico: We met a long time ago in school, when we were 6, and became very close quickly. I originally started out in the hip hop scene and techno & electro was not my cup of tea until one day, around 2003, Rob played me Drexciya at home (“Neptunes Liar”). From that day on I was hooked on to electro music and after that we started producing music together, under the influence of a lot of cuba libres. This is how Crotaphytus was born. Then in 2006 we started Solar One Music.

Rob: Nico told the story of our first meeting. I had been deejaying from 1996 till 2006 and I’m a record collecting freak and also produced music. So we thought: ‘hey we have to do something because we spend too much time waiting for answers after we send out demos’ and so we started SOM to release our own music.

Chain D.L.K. How would you describe your label to a friendly spaceman who just landed on earth?

Nico: Something different, something special!

Rob: We want to touch people in their soul with the music we release. Deep stuff. Not only dance floor stuff. More like stories built in the head of the listener. You can imagine a lot when you open your mind to this kind of music. I think that’s the important thing for us: we build something for eternity. And special packaging is important to us for sure too

Chain D.L.K. A lot of electro music has sci-fi references, what are yours if you have any?

Nico: The only science fiction stuff I love is Perry Rhodan’s books and Drexciya. Those are my only sci-fi references.

Rob: There isn’t anything special I like in sci-fi. I really like the B movies from the 50’s and 60’s. The Exaltics story happens in their own different world. The music gets a face and gives you the space to think about it. Thats very important to me!

Chain D.L.K. By listening to your releases I’d say that you want to have a sound that people can recognize as distinctive of your label. How important is this factor to you?

Nico: Yes its very important! And we don’t want to copy anyone. That’s the sound we love so much and also feel.

Rob: I don’t think that we think so much about that. It happens every time. We let the feeling flow… that’s all it is every time.

Chain D.L.K. Your music has always a tension factor and would be well used as soundtrack. Have you ever thought to release a video (I’m not counting the one for “What’s Wrong” because it was based on images morphing) or have you ever had requests for using your music that way?

Nico: Time is the reason why we don’t work on videos for the music. We’ve had some thoughts about this but we’ll have to see. With the “What’s Wrong” video it was all about spreading the music on platforms like YouTube. It’s not a masterpiece, I know.

Rob: My greatest dream is definitely to do music for a dark movie. But it is difficult to get into the film industry. I don’t know how to. Perhaps someday someone will hear The Exaltics stuff and say “hey I need that sound”. I hope.

Chain D.L.K. Aliens who are watching us and hungry prehistoric predators are for sure a threat to humanity… Is it more a game or a social statement? You know… we kinda would deserve it.

Nico: It’s definitely a social statement! Like Sin City! It’s freighting what’s happened to our planet. It’s like converting our thoughts about all this shit!!

Rob: I hate this world!!!! I can’t watch the daily news. I don’t understand most people’s attitude but we don’t want to initiate a political discussion here…

Chain D.L.K. The Exaltics will be your first vinyl release. What convinced you to use that format?

Nico: I wasn’t a friend of vinyl! I’ve bought only CD’s and still have no turntable, but I recently listened to The Exaltics‘ “We are Not Your Friends EP” on Last Know Trajectory and I thought: Wow what a sound!!! But to be honest I’m more  of a a CD junkie. The other thing is, many people are asking for SOM vinyl… and i do this for Rob. He loves vinyl… this sucker!

Rob: I LOVE VINYL!!!!

Chain D.L.K. What are the electro bands of the past that you love the most and what are the ones that influenced you the most?

Nico: For me no Kraftwerk… Definitely Drexciya for this scene.

Rob: I like the old Detroit stuff… Beside I always listen to music from bands like NIN, the old punk stuff from east germany, AFX, Dead Kennedys and so on… there’s too much…

Chain D.L.K. What are the bands you respect the most and which are the one you’d like to collaborate with?

Nico: The best stuff today comes from: Shemale, Franck Sarrio, AS1, Komarken Electronics, Kan3da, Beta Evers… and a lot of other stuff. Also stuff like old german punk Bands like Schleim Keim and so on… Also I really like Nine Inch Nails and their thing between electronic and hard guitar music. I want to collaborate with Orange Sunshine, the band from the guy from Bunker Records!

Rob: Schleim Keim, AFX, Jello Biafra, NIN, Jeff Mills, AS1… I want to collaborate with Trent Reznor or to make music for a David Lynch film…

Chain D.L.K. What plans do you have for the future?

Nico: SOM Comp. 3, Crotaphytus, The Bite Of The Reptiles 2 and a Komarken Electronics releases for next year. Also a 12″ from our sub label Unhöerbar. More infos to come.

Rob: Making music… we have to see how the things go. Releasing part 3 of the “1000 Lights in the Sky” series on Bunker and also a new 12″ for Last Know Trajectory… a lot of things…

Likhan offers two of his best dub house/dubbage cuts for the 7Even crew. Blending house and garage flavors into massive bass lines and dub skanks, delays and echoes, “Boxin” and “Boston” are unique tracks, and as usual with Likhan, impossible to label. The London players have already adopted them for their turntables: T.Williams and Don Morris from Deep Teknologi, DJ IC and Slackk are currently rinsing these tracks at their shows and on Rinse FM.

WORK, THE: See CD (ADHOC 022CD) 19.00
“Any album by The Work is difficult to categorize, or to pigeon-hole. The band’s output has been labelled everything from ‘post-punk’ to ‘acid jazz’, and yet any sort of classification just doesn’t seem to do the music justice. The approach seems to exhibit the complexity of progressive rock, whilst throwing that aesthetic to the dogs, in lieu of assimilating the energy and power of early punk. The Work were among the first few post-Henry Cow bands to purposefully break their own mould in an attempt to conquer new ground, thus creating music that seems more comfortable resting on a bed of nails than precious laurels. See was the final The Work album to be issued during the band’s lifetime. It showcased some of the very best material of their later years, and a penchant to move into a different, more mature setting. The electronic experimentation here perfectly meshes with post-punk appeals and terrorist-like energy, giving the listener plenty of reasons to be drawn-in to their psychotic world of extremes. Each instrument plays perfectly off of the others to send everything, ’somewhere else’, whilst somehow holding together perfectly amidst some fiendish, ‘white knuckler’ time relations. Though the vocals on this album were more ’sung’ than ’shrieked’ (as evidenced on their earliest recordings), the instrumental parts, especially the drumming, keep the group in line with its radically apparent love for showcasing a primal approach. This has been out-of-print for a number of years, so it’s great to have it back again.”

WORK, THE: The 4th World CD (ADHOC 036CD) 19.00
“The 4th World is the band’s long-lost, never before issued, very last album, from 1994. Succeeding See by some two years, it shares that album’s aesthetics and approach — an economy of means, and superior song-writing/playing — even when compared to their earlier albums. One wouldn’t guess it was recorded live at a gig in Breisgau, because the sound is, quite honestly, superlative, and is even better than any of their studio albums. The original, mono recordings (by Volkmar Miedtke) were meticulously reprocessed into stereo years later by Udi Koomran, and the sound has really been, ‘opened up’. The playing itself is also powerful and thoughtful. Especially important is the fact that only two of the twenty songs on this disc were released on previous albums, thus making The Work’s entire catalog finally complete, and now wholly in print.”

ALGA MARGHEN (ITALY)

PALESTINE & SIMONE FORTI, CHARLEMAGNE: Illuminations LP (ALGA 082LP) 26.00
“Alga Marghen proudly presents the first ever release of Illuminatios, or Charlemagne Palestine and Simone Forti duo interactions, illuminated with dim red lights. In early 1970 Mort Subotnick asked Charlemagne Palestine to join his soon to be created Media Department at the new ‘Dream School of the Future’ endowed by the Disneys to be called the California Institute of the Arts. Charlemagne and Simone Forti met there in 1970, when La Monte Young asked them to arrange a California concert for Pandit Pran Nath. They decided to try an improvisation session together and Charlemagne invited Simone the first time to the electronic music studio where he worked regularly. Their medium blended as a play of interacting sound waves and solid matter in motion as Charlemagne and Simone shared energy and focus. The three previously unreleased recordings on this LP were made between October and December 1971. The first take, titled ‘Illumination,’ is for two voices moving in the space with small bells and crystal glasses while Simone Forti plays the molimo, a corrugated tube meant for connecting the gas stove. The second take titled, ‘Wed Oct 13th 1971,’ has Simone and Charlemagne in a song dialogue as animals do. It was also at Cal Arts that Charlemagne Palestine first encountered a Bosendorfer Imperial Piano of Vienna. He played it often as Simone danced during their ‘Illuminations’. Take three is a song sang in falsetto while playing the Bosendorfer Imperial in an arpeggiated style that predates the ’strummings’. Listening to these ‘three takes’ 40 years later, they ooze a timeless, carefree mystical, magical, dreamy atmosphere that evoked the times of the late 60s to early 70s in Charlemagne and Simone part of the California Art Scene. ‘Illuminations’ were a unique open spontaneous form of performance, ritual and prayer. Edition limited to 365 copies with an essay by both Charlemagne Palestine and Simone Forti, as well as photos of the performances reproduced on the LP front sleeve.”

BRAU, JEAN-LOUIS: Instrumentations Verbales LP (ALGA 084LP) 26.00
“After releasing the first LPs ever published by Isidore Isou, Gil J Wolman, Hidlgo&Marchetti’s ZAJ… here is another historical premiere, or the first LP ever issued by French pre-situationist Jean-Louis Brau. Jean-Louis Brau (1930-1985) at the age of 20 joined along with Gil J Wolman, Isidore Isou’s Lettrist group, creating in this context (the same of Wolman’s ‘mégapneums’, Dufrêne’s ‘crirythmes’, Lemaître’s ‘hyperphonies’ and Isou’s ‘poèmes ciselants’) what he called ‘instrumentations verbales’. In 1952 he recorded on a lathe the soundtrack to the unfinished film La barque de la vie courante (the first ever recording of experimental poetry). In the same year, with Debord, Berna and Wolman, he gave birth to the Internationale Lettriste, from which he was eventually rejected for his military deviation. After the Indochina war (where he ran a brothel and traded opium), Brau joined the French Army in Algeria, between 1956 and 1958. In 1963, back in Paris, Brau gave birth to a Deuxième Internationale Lettriste together with Wolman and Dufrêne. He also designed an astonishing métagraphic roman: No More. He approached everything in an explosive way, creating a body of work which is discontinuous, small and incomplete, in which he sometimes achieved some major results: for example with his sound poetry, as demonstrated by ‘Turn back nightingale’ (1972), in which Brau makes references to François Dufrêne, on a background of disarticulated drums and pre-punk saturations. Also included on this one-sided LP are ‘Elégie Elémentaire’ and ‘Ataloche Roche’, both recorded in 1961 during Isidore Isou’s conference at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, as well as ‘Instrumentation Verbale’ and ‘Cantate pour l’interdiction de Mandrake’, both recorded in 1963 and first published in Poésie Physique, book with 3 singles (Brau, Dufrêne, Wolman), Achèle, in 1965. Edition limited to 350 copies reproducing a page from No More on the front sleeve, as well as an essay by Frederic Acquaviva.”

“After leaving behind the Somalian pirates, Geiom is cruising the sunny waters of the Indian Ocean when he picks up a distress signal on his scanner. He follows the signal until he locates a tiny remote island and a guy called Bowly, who said that he was on his way from France to the New World, but got totally lost. Judging by the age of the map he was using it’s easy to see how. Bowly spent his time on the island hanging out with the locals who amuse themselves by creating a unique style of music on some amazing handcrafted instruments. Geiom helps Bowly get on his way again, and leaves him with a more useful map. Some months later, Bowly beams over his music as a gift from his new found homeland in Canada. The tracks are like some strange mutation of those distant tropical players and the UK-based pirate radio transmissions that Bowly has been tuning into. Geiom loves the result and decides to send them straight over to Transition in London for mastering and release on Berkane Sol.”

“It’s another heavy-hitter from the Boka camp, this time it’s a debut on the label from Vista & Presence Known whose well-publicized collaborations have caught the attention of the likes of Excision, Chris Renegade, 16bit, Datsik, etc., and have been featured on the hugely popular ‘Inspector Dubplate’ YouTube channel. These tunes are ultra heavy with a distinct drum & bass influence, massive club tunes that really need to be heard on a fat system, pretty much the dubstep equivalent of deep, dark heavy metal! Vista in his own right is a successful dubstep producer having had a tune featured on the recent Fabric compilation Elevator Music and Presence Known has just released a tune on legendary d&b label Virus with BTK. Vista has plenty of big tunes coming on Boka Records so keep your ears to the floor for those.”

Joakim Ijäs aka Kiki presents Cinema Obscura, which follows on seamlessly from U.S. house traditions, yet also reduces them to absurdity with atmospheric density and sonic extravagance. “Sumore” rolls along at pulse rate, generates its own energy and swings calmly like a giant pendulum over the dancefloor. “Cinema Obscura” also takes its time, radiating an almost stoic tranquility, until a hypnotic, bouncing piano riff flows into the rolling house percussion. In 2009, a series of five anonymously-produced, ink-stamped, exclusively vinyl releases appeared on the global techno scene under the mysterious guise Traversable Wormhole. The sound was a unique signature of sci-fi techno music with gaps of time, space & bass in between sound & rhythm. Early in 2010, Traversable Wormhole would release a sixth volume, with 20-year veteran techno artist/DJ Adam X subtly taking claim as the producer behind the project. Remixes by Marcel Dettmann and Peter Van Hoesen.

“10 years ago, Ian Read’s (Fire + Ice) Fremdheit label released two neofolk/experimental compilations under the name ‘The Pact’. The second of these compilations contained an unforgettable track from an Australian outfit called Beastianity. Curious about the band and eager to hear more, we tried to dig up as much information as possible — but very little (if any) information was readily available. We were able to find the band shortly after the creation of Dais in 2007, and are proud to announce, along with Praise Dog Publishing, the first ever vinyl release of Beastianity’s first and only album Root, originally released in 1999 on CD and in Australia only. This record is hands down one of the rawest and most unrelenting albums in the neofolk genre. A purely pagan classic. Renown for their wild (and often violent) performances, Beastianity somehow managed to capture that energy in 12 tracks of Dog-Blessed glory.” Limited, numbered edition of 300; includes insert.

“Summer ‘93: Whether you believed it or not, the stakes were rising like high water all around. It was better to accept it; there was money in the air for those who wanted some. Royal Trux dreamed about close encounters with money; it was their kind of time. And in kind, they were ready to give music back that would be worth the money — worth it for everyone. Meanwhile, it was just over two years since Twin Infinitives redefined the bottom of the barrel for listeners and those who watched the listeners (who listened too of course). Royal Trux had tried silence and they preferred rock and roll. Their untitled album of late 1992 was a sign of life; a sign illuminated by a three-month run down the road in the fall of that year. Royal Trux were back in a way they’d never really been before. Cats and Dogs hit the street in June of ‘93 and represented a quantum leap from everywhere Royal Trux had previously broadcast from. Their innate feel for disparate styles had been demonstrated over the course of three wildly diverse albums, but Cats and Dogs wove diversity expertly throughout its eleven songs, all united by an interest in rhythmic rock and roll. There was the mulch of grunge, a lean stand of retro-soul, plumes of psychedelic vapor and a thudding post-garage, all of which was flung out venomously as if owed to no one. This is the 2006 release of Dave Cloud & The Gospel of Power’s 45 track double CD retrospective, including brand new originals. Historian of religions Mircea Eliade described shamans as specialists in ecstasy, able to “penetrate the underworld and rise to the sky” in a transcendent state. It is not surprising, then, that the word “shamanistic” has been used repeatedly over the past 25 years to describe the incendiary performances of Nashville’s Dave Cloud and his band The Gospel of Power. Weekly late-night shows for the unenlightened Nashville masses quickly established Cloud as Music City’s enfant terrible while garnering diehard converts along the way. Holding a dusty mirror to pop music’s tawdry conventions, Cloud and his colleagues deftly dismember the Frankenstein monster of modern musical excess. Despite never previously leaving Nashville, Dave has fans as far away as Paris and Auckland. As Edwin Pouncey of The Wire magazine noted, “he sounds more like a cross between acid-addled Roky Erickson and boozed Beat writer, the late Charles Bukowski, than Steve Earle or Willie Nelson.” This double CD collects tracks from Cloud’s first two albums, All My Best and Songs I Will Always Sing, and includes five previously-unreleased tracks.

Kelley brings a hefty dose of The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, The Pogues, The Kinks and Buddy Holly to the table, while Christa Meyer, inspired by Nina Simone, Kurt Weill, Nick Cave and anything else dusty and neglected, sashays her mezzo soprano front and center. Their debut release Your Bloated Corpse Has Washed Ashore is now a cult classic and the band continues to surprise and enthrall critics and audiences alike with their ingenuity and inventiveness. Formed in 1972 in Northern France, Sourdeline has remained a hidden treasure for decades. With a strong Pentangle influence in their works, they released a couple of astounding albums during the next few years, acquiring a wonderful baroque folk sound based on some traditional French folk songs in addition to many originals, with the use of a large number of traditional instruments. Their first disc La Reine Blanche is from 1976 and is considered a classic of continental European ’70s folk — certainly an album that will please anyone into folk-prog. This is the first-ever, deluxe reissue of this record and it has been completely remastered. Includes a fantastic booklet with unseen photos and liners by Sourdeline fan Margaret Ayre of Fern Knight, as well as Sourdeline’s story written by the band’s leader Jean-Pierre Danielsen.

FAR EAST FAMILY BAND: ”The Cave” Down To The Earth LP (ASH 3023LP) 22.00
180 gram LP version. Regarded by many as the first Japanese progressive rock group, the Far East Family Band, whose first album release was under the name Far Out, released “The Cave” Down To The Earth in 1975. Influential in the creation of the band’s distinctive psychedelic sound was keyboard player Kitaro, who went on to establish himself as a major new age artist in the ’80s. Although the band was often categorized as new age too, their sound was distinctly progressive and often brought comparisons with Tangerine Dream and early Pink Floyd. The ethereal, space-rock quality of the band’s music is here in abundance but the centerpiece is without doubt the title track, which starts off in a mellow mood but then becomes a killer guitar jam. For music fans that have yet to discover the delights of ’70s Japanese psychedelic rock, “The Cave” Down To The Earth is a fabulous introduction. Housed in a die-cut sleeve with a printed inner sleeve. Includes the original LP insert.

LES RALLIZES DENUDES: Blind Baby Has Its Mother’s Eyes LP (ASH 3035LP) 22.00
LP version. Legendary Japanese rock outfit Les Rallizes Denudés were formed in 1967 and incredibly, for a group that had only one official release (Oz Days Live, a double vinyl compilation release in 1973), played their last gig almost 30 years later in October 1996. The band’s name apparently means “fucked up and naked,” which more than adequately describes their music. Formed by band leader Mizutani Takashi, the music remained remarkably familiar over the years, and is best described as high volume, raw, lo-fi, repetitive, feedback-drenched guitar-noise fests with nods in the direction of The Velvet Underground and Blues Creation, but without the electronics. Radical left-wing politics were never far from the band’s agenda, with one original band member (Wakabayashi) being involved in the Japanese Red Army’s hijacking of a flight to North Korea. Consequently, the group’s live appearances became less frequent and increasingly clandestine. All the band’s albums were released in very small quantities, and because of the group’s reputation for secrecy and violence, as well as the difficulty in tracking down their recordings, Les Rallizes Denudés has assumed almost mythical status. Blind Baby Has Its Mother’s Eyes sits at #11 on Julian Cope’s list of top Japanese albums.

Phonica Records calls upon Leeds-based producer Midland for its fifth 12″ release, a four track EP that also includes a remix from Dexter. “Play The Game” begins moodily with ethereal vocal snippets à la Burial, Pangaea or Joy Orbison skirting the rhythm’s surface. Dexter completely reinvents the track into big-room, electro-inflected techno. “Leitmotif” is even deeper, with spectral FX and panning, dubbed-out percussion, while “Head Down” continues Midland’s penchant for melodic, echo-drenched chords and disembodied vocal textures.

On this record, Hassle Hound integrate kindergarten kitsch with moodier psychedelicate moments, documenting a celestial domesticity with eccentric but compelling instrumentation and intriguing ideas. Their irreverent and eclectic approach results in a collection of complex, yet cohesive songs, each with their own idiosyncratic sonic identity. Their curious blend of sampled sounds, field recordings, electronic noises and live instruments creates a simultaneously sophisticated and naive seduction where angelic melodies tussle with radiophonic dexterity, digital caresses, analog whispers and jolly anarchy. Limited edition 1,200 copies deluxe vinyl LP of Dungen’s sixth studio album (also released on CD & LP in the U.S. via Mexican Summer). This is the Swedish vinyl version, on the band’s original label, and pressed on a red-colored vinyl (different than the U.S. edition), with a full-color printed inner sleeve. Sweden’s Dungen sweetly return with a collection of gorgeous, dream-like melodies, psychedelic stonkers and graceful, jazz-filled polyrhythms. For main man/producer/arranger/singer Gustav Ejstes, Skit I Allt means “Don’t give a shit, forget about it, just go ahead and do it. A friend said: ‘Skit I Allt; fuck it, do as you want, time is passing and it’s changing, forget fears and hang-ups, we are small and everything is pretty insignificant on the whole. How will it be? What shall we do? We often worry so much unnecessarily. Skit i allt, it’s happening now.’” In what feels like a very short decade, Sweden’s Dungen has mutated at a furious pace, and Gustav Ejstes’ lone constant has been change. At ease with effervescent pop, third-eye popping psychedelia, heavy rock, spider-web folk and breezy jazz, Dungen’s dynamism astounds throughout Skit I Allt. Rather than remain only Ejstes’ studio vision, Dungen is a muscular full band, now. Guitarist Reine Fiske, bassist Mattias Gustavsson, and drummer Johan Holmegard are fully integrated into Ejstes’ vision of Dungen. Dungen debuted in 2001 with an eponymous album of long psilocybic tracks and aural tomfoolery. The next year’s Stadsvandringar found Ejstes coming to grips with the language of rock before the zeitgeist-grabbing third album, Ta Det Lugt (SUBL 017LP) ignited the blogosphere so that it glowed like the aurora borealis. Not content to revel in such accolades, Tio Bitar (SUBL 019LP) flashed the band’s pop smarts as well as their incandescent freak-outs while 4 (SUBL 030LP) put the band’s cohesiveness on display, at once gorgeous and biting. This album is the one that gathers everything they’ve done and learned, bringing it all together into an impressive whole.

Rediscovered by Thurston Moore and now back out with the full original version plus edits and mixes by Lemon Jelly’s Fred Deakin, Tommy Stupid and Georges Vert aka the Advisory Circle. The Jellies got together in 1981 and made a 7″ single. There is one photo of the band and they never recorded again.
