Ambient or bland, that is the question...

I'm not denying that there's some great ambient music (some of Eno's work, such as "Music for Films", for example), but some music seems to be an excuse for bland, uninteresting stuff masquerading as "ambient"  -  you only have to listen to some mp3.com ambient bands to see what I mean (run a sequence for 10 minutes whilst you have a cup of coffee and, hey presto !, an ambient piece.)

Cheers,
Colin

Yeah, BigBlock454 is right... There is a lot of tedious ambient music out there, but, hey, it is only up to us to seek for quality and talent... Bad muzak is everywhere around us, but cool stuff is available too... I guess it very much comes down to what your relation is with the ambient music you are listening to... Are you listening to it in an elevator? Are your eyes closed while relaxing in a dark room? Are you driving on the highway? It is really a matter of taste, like everything in music, but I totally agree that there is a lot of bad boring bland ambient... hey we can call it the 3B ambient music! ;-)

Even worse is that shitty experimental music where a guy puts in a 10 second sequence of a frying pan hitting a stove, hits repeat gets some coffee, and 10 minutes later has one-fifth of his CD done. Never go to MP3.com for ambient or experimental bands, it's a bunch of basement kids with projects that will be over as soon as their college grants are over. Are you referring to his "Solstice" CD? The first track is good, but the rest of it from the stuff I've heard is way too bland, way too mellow for me. Sounds like Yanni, most of it. It kinda reminds me of that music you hear in those upper class Italian resturaunts, or in a yoga tape. I'd stick with my Vangelis.
