MOTOR - Klunk
"Motor is totally uncompromised electronic music practicing a punk
ethic, deliberately breaking any musical restrictions or sound
barriers. After releasing a string of raw, bold and innovative singles,
Klunk is Motor's debut full-length album. Packed with dark menacing
grooves, corrosive industrial drumming and the lost, tripped out
cranial bending atmosphere of a party that just didn't quite stop,
Klunk joins the dots between Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Final Cut,
Plastikman, acid house and minimal techno creating a glorious
dancefloor killing sound that is uniquely Motor." on Mute

TUXEDOMOON - Bardo Hotel Soundtrack
BARDO HOTEL SOUNDTRACK is a true "Road Movie Of The Mind".
Shortly
after finishing "Cabin In The Sky", Tuxedomoon traveled back
to San
Francisco, the band's birthplace, in order to start writing
material
for their next album. But the local atmosphere had unexpected effects
on them, and drove them to record a series of "spontaneous
compositions" (as Mingus would have put it) instead, which soon
formed
the basis of this side project, intended to be the soundtrack for a
film the band is currently shooting with Greek visual artist George
Kakanakis. The film and the album are loosely connected to Brion
Gysin's novel 'The Bardo Hotel', set in the Paris hotel
where he and
William Burroughs invented the radical cut-up/fold-in technique
Consisting of inspired instrumentals interspersed with various
vignettes and found sounds, the album is being released under the Made
To Measure imprint, Crammed's legendary instrumental/soundtrack
series
from the 80s/90s, which is symbolically being resurrected just for this
occasion. With spirits still entrenched firmly in a counterculture
that predated our current over-the-counter culture, Tuxedomoon step
forth and confidently deliver messages of defiance and diversity when
they are perhaps most needed. on Crammed Disc $15.47

PLAID - Greedy Baby
"Perennial electronic favorites Plaid return with a shimmering,
expansive collection of sinister, yet playful collection of all new
material. More akin to the atmospheric space-funk of Restproof
Clockwork than their later efforts, longtime fans will feel rewarded
and new listeners will have their appetites whetted. For Greedy Baby,
Plaid have collaborated with Brighton-based animator and video artist
Bob Jaroc to create an entire visual world for the music to exist in
the form of a companion DVD. Combining film, video and animation, the
visuals included here range from the colorfully abstract to subtle,
shape-changing mini-tales. Together, the package represents perhaps the
most substantial realization of Plaid's music and creativity."
Disc 2
is a DVD, NTSC format, Region 1, mostly 5.1 DVD audio versions of the
same tracks on the CD, plus 4 bonus tracks. RECOMMENDED! on Warp

MIDLAKE - Trials Of Van Occupanther
Trials of Van Occupantheris Midlake's second album with the lead
track
"Roscoe" gaining over 100k downloads within weeks of hitting
the
blogosphere. This Texas band has been touring with the Flaming Lips in
the U.S. and Europe are poised for something bigger than flavor of the
day indie rock. The album has received 4 stars from Mojo and Uncut. on

JULES, MARSEN - Les Fleurs
This is Germany-based Marsen Jules' (Martin Juhls) second
full-length
release, after his highly-acclaimed 2005 debut, Herbstlaub. If
Herbstlaub represented the sound of frost-shrouded autumn, then new
album Les Fleurs sees Marsen Jules throwing open the windows and
welcoming in the scent of spring. An intricately plotted series of
ambient machinations, Herbstlaub was a record that delighted in
technology without leaving the listener suffering from digital
cold-shoulder - exchanging the often austere environs of sample-based
compositions for a piquant study of lush crate-digging. Opening through
the beautiful chimes of "Oeillet Sauvage," Jules allows a
diffused
soundscape to slowly bloom - enveloping the listener in a miasma of
creamy vibraphone-bruised resonance that is neither overpowering nor
sleight. Bolstered by the introduction of genuine instrumentation,
Jules seems to have discovered a more outlandish side to his
personality, with the thrumming percussion of "La Digitale
Poupre" and
sonorous bass of "Coquelicot" both exhibiting a more
pronounced
willingness to firm up the tacit reference points in his work. Whilst
comparisons can be readily drawn with the likes of Harold Budd, Max
Richter, Arvo Pärt and even William Basinski, Marsen Jules is
nonetheless utterly unique - mixing his evident love of skewed
compositions with a real ear for melody. The aural equivalent of
catching sight of something on a sunny day from the corner of your eye,
Les Fleurs shreds its source material then scatters it to the wind -
creating a sound that is at once calming without becoming soporific,
and exhilarating without veering towards the breathless. Jules demands
a wider audience for his work and manages to introduce lashings of
strings for "Coeur Saignant" and not call upon the clichéd
notions of
cheap orchestration or dreaded imaginary film soundtrack references.
Jules closes the album with "Oeillet En Delta" wherein a
honeyed breed
of blunted ambience brings down the curtain in considerable style. If
the summer is half as good as this musical spring, we're in for a
scorcher. on City Centre Offices $13.97

SAKAMOTO, RYUICHI - Bricolages
Academy and Grammy award-winning composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto
returned to his electropop roots with the 2005 release of his 15th solo
project, Chasm. Now Sakamoto has turned the files over to 13 electronic
artists for their stunning take on this critically acclaimed release.
“Bricolages” is the first Ryuichi Sakamoto Remix Project Since ‘98’s
critically acclaimed “Prayer” / “Salavation & Anger” / “Grief
Series.”
“Bricolages” features new interpretations of tracks by previous
Sakamoto collaborators including Cornelius, Fennesz, and Alva Noto, and
marks the first work with artists like Craig Armstrong, Richard Devine,
Rob da Bank and Slicker. Sakamoto has made a career of crossing
musical and technological boundaries and has experimented with, and
excelled in, many different musical styles, making a name for himself
in popular, orchestral, and film music. With Chasm Sakamoto set out to
combine the many sides of his complex musical personality, “My music
has been acoustic or electronic, classical or non-classical, somehow
always divided largely into two types. My own goal for a long time has
been to somehow fuse these into one music rather than juxtaposing them.
I feel that this time, with Chasm, I’ve gotten the closest to resolving
the issue,” Sakamoto says. Sakamoto's best-known work is probably
the
soundtrack to “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence,” but in 1987, his score
for Bertolucci's “The Last Emperor” won him an Oscar, a Grammy, a
Golden Globe, as well as the New York, Los Angeles and British Film
Critics Association awards for best original soundtrack. “Bricolages”
was Executive Produced by Ryuichi Sakamoto in association with Norika
Sora(sky), Evan Balmer, Justin Kleinfeld and Eric Giambertone.

NORTH SEA & RAMESES 3 - Night Of The Ankou
Night of the Ankou is an immense collaboration between London-based
psychedelic-ambient three piece Rameses III and Tulsa's finest free
folk rebel, Brad Rose aka The North Sea. Rose might be better known as
the brains behind Digitalis, a multi-media wyrd folk empire acting as a
CD-R label, magazine, book publisher and full-blown label, but it is
his own musical compositions that remain at the core of whatever he
turns his hand to. As with many overseas collaborations these days, the
two acts have never actually met in person - instead they worked by
re-moulding each others' tracks, working their own ideas into the
skeletons of that of the other, and the result is mesmerizing. The
opener "Death of the Ankou" is a hypnotic journey into the
instrumental
ambience explored by such acts as Popol Vuh or Stars of the Lid, yet
adds a sense of cinematic adventure which could be compared to
Type's
very own Deaf Center. We are transported quite promptly into a
spiritual world of water, bamboo, beauty and restraint which is
simultaneously calming and beguiling. The second piece, entitled
"Night
Blossoms Written in Sanskrit" is different; the ambience is filled
out
by echoing guitar, and the mood goes from peaceful and spiritual to
truly triumphant. It would even be possible to compare this track to
the later work of Slowdive - it has that same blissful, life-affirming
quality which makes you remember why you loved music in the first
place. The disc is polished off by a remix from the Type Records boss
himself Xela, and pulls together the ideas explored in the first two
tracks, adding elements of his own signature production. Drones and
bowed guitar squeals are spread densely over light percussion, harp and
otherworldly sounds to produce something unusual but hugely enjoyable.
This may be Type's first foray into the weird world of psychedelic
folk
music, but given the deep ambience and mysterious cinematic beauty of
Night of the Ankou, it is a match made in heaven. on Type UK $13.97

TOUCH 25 / VARIOUS on Touch Records
This is the Touch 25th anniversary edition CD, celebrating the
conception and first release from Touch with exclusive tracks from:
Oren Ambarchi, Biosphere, Fennesz, Bruce Gilbert, Ryoji Ikeda, Philip
Jeck, Johann Johannsson, Jacob Kirkegaard, Mother Tongue, BJNilsen, Pan
Sonic, Rosy Parlane, Peter Rehberg, Rafael Toral, Mark Van Hoen, Chris
Watson. There are also several insert recordings and a live edit from
Hild Sofie Tafjord & Tanja Orning. Touch was conceived by Jon
Wozencroft in 1981, and released its first cassette magazine Feature
Mist in 1982, and since then, the label has become one of the key
touchstones in captivating, intelligent electronic music worldwide.
Most artists on this compilation have made a special recording for this
CD as a sort of "declaration of intent," envisioning
future-music 25
years down the line, using elements from the past. As Wozencroft
himself states, "What seems to have taken place, is a sequence of
25
tracks (in itself an accident of numbers) that each in their own space
are quite obscure and 'of a refined sense of taste,' but
together,
build a very emotional journey through the emotional conditions brought
on by the lack of emotion in everyday life, and its replacement by
extremities." Biosphere reconnects to nature with a proliferation
of
birds, Pan Sonic and Ryoji Ikeda condense their approach into two
five-minute pieces that make you appreciate their past excursions, and
Chris Watson presents two recordings based on transportation conditions
on water and railway, which connect more obviously to his roots in
Cabaret Voltaire than his wildlife sound recordings, but end up
re-energizing both. Bruce Gilbert has made a spoken-word story that
contains his finest guitar playing to date, and Rafael Toral plays his
piece with a data glove. Wozencroft himself contributes a recording he
made in 1984 of the plumbing system in his old apartment, as well as a
recording of an air traffic control deadzone over Siberia that was
recorded in the cockpit of a 747. Touch 25 is the sound of future life.

RAPOON & BIRDS OF TIN - Monomyth
A wonderful new record featuring the driving percussion of RAPOON woven
perfectly with the light, introspective drifts of BIRDS OF TIN. All the
little adornments, touches and unexpected moments are in place, here
and there, sign-posting your journey into a work that stays interesting
and even changes, listen after listen. Monomyth manages to sound both
tribal and futuristic all at once. A flight over haunted, surreal
byways, unfigurable landscapes, the joining point of all spiritual
elements and ideas. Those elements become expanded, magnified into
something greater than just another Rapoon or Birds Of Tin disc. This
record is what all collaborations try to achieve; the best techniques
of two artists, melded into something beyond either. on Manifold

RHYTHM & SOUND - See Mi Yah Remixes (remixes)
Through projects and labels like Basic Channel, Maurizio or Main Street
Records, the Berlin-based producer team of Mark Ernestus and Moritz von
Oswald have exerted a decisive influence on the worldwide development
of techno-house and electronic music during the '90s. Under the
name
Rhythm & Sound, Ernestus and von Oswald pioneered their own hybrid
of
reggae, dub and electronics. In recent years, they have come up with
their own and totally unique definition of reggae. See Mi Yah (released
in March 2005) is a classic "one-riddim-album" comprised of
ten vocal
versions plus the original instrumental track of the "See Mi
Yah"-riddim by Rhythm & Sound. On See Mi Yah one can hear the
voices of
Paul St.Hilaire, Ras Perez, Koki, Ras Donovan, Freddy Mellow, Walda
Gabriel, Sugar Minott, Willi Williams, Bobbo Shanti, Lance Clarke as
Rod Of Iron and Joseph Cotton aka Jah Walton as Jah Cotton. The
remix-version of the album (initially released as a series of 12"
singles throughout the spring of 2006) transplants the "strictly
roots"
approach of the originals into the club. The result is a diversified
collection of excellent club tracks. And while each of these retains
its autonomy and its individuality, the whole album sounds as if carved
from one piece. From dry digi-dub, UK steppers, minimal electronic and
disco house to deep atmospheric tracks, all kinds of current club
sounds are represented here. This project brings together several
generations of DJs and producers: from collaborators of long standing
such as DJ legend Carl Craig to promising newcomers, a great array of
artists helped to create this album. Remixers include: Soundstream,
Ricardo Villalobos, Carl Craig, Tiki, Sweet Substance, François K.,
Vladislav Delay, Vainqueur, Sleeparchive and Hallucinator. on Burial

KERRIER DISTRICT - Kerrier District 2
Electronic legend Luke Vibert comes through with his second release as
Kerrier District. Vibert needs little introduction, with albums since
1993 on Rising High, MoWax, Planet Mu, Warp, Ninja and of course,
Rephlex (co-producing the legendary Vibert Simmons odyssey with current
label mate Jeremy Simmons, aka Voafose). He has recorded under many
aliases since then, most notably Wagon Christ, Plug, Ace of Clubs,
Butler Kiev and also more recently as Amen Andrews. Together with Aphex
Twin and Squarepusher, he is noted for being a vital cornerstone in the
triumvirate of braindance supremacy, and over the last couple of years
he extensively toured the world getting himself a shithot reputation as
a DJ. Vibert's original Kerrier District project was a disco house
smash and the best-selling Rephlex release of 2004. If you haven't
heard Kerrier District, it's a total contrast to the drum and bass
sounds of Vibert's Amen Andrews work, being about as disco as house
music can get with a tad bit of "funky" in there, too. You
may recall
his Kerrier remix of the 1978 Italo smash hit "Black Devil" -
well,
these remixes, too, could very well be chart-bound. Kerrier District 2
taps this side of Vibert's extraordinary talent even further, but
is
basically just great music that rocks a party or puts a smile on your
face, and you'd miss it if it wasn't in your collection. The
new
chart-friendly remixes are the kind of music that will appeal to all
dance music fans for years to come. Remix artists include a version by
Ceephax Acid Krew, the mega-talented acid master. on Rephlex $8.97

SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE - Sun Awakens
"Listening to The Sun Awakens back-to-back with its predecessor
will
provoke a different response. There's a few treats, sure. As a
matter
of fact, it's all treats to our ears. But it's not all happy
beans,
just so you know. As a matter of fact, it's the darkest Six Organs
of
Admittance yet. In addition to titling songs cheerless things like
'Black Wall,' and 'Torn by Wolves,' Ben's brought a
bit more electric
guitar into the mix to help bring out the darkness. Tim Green is behind
the board making sure that everything sounds rock-solid, and the
acoustics are brilliant, almost blinding. Side one is a six-song circle
where waves of guitars build and beauty is betrayed by madness...in the
prettiest possible way. Side two is a trip down the droning 'River
of
Transfiguration.' The inspiration here is Hermann Nitsch. You might
hear Popul Vuh as an influence too, as well as Hapshash and the
Coloured Coat. Overall though, Six Organs of Admittance doesn't
believe
in the critical myth that an artist who flirts with the obscure needs
to consolidate their experimental tendencies into more and more
listenable music in order to expand the envelope of what pop music can
be. He don't believe in a linear aesthetic trajectory either."

City $12.97

COUCH - Figur 5

honed

at the turn of the last century. on morr music $13.47

AN ALBATROSS - Blessphemy
AN ALBATROSS is a psychedelic sonic orgasm; a barrage of mechanical,
jerky and discombobulated time signatures eclipsed by hectic Farfisa
organ/synthesizer melodies. Not unlike sitting down with an average
American family during primetime television, the music is
unquestionably attention-span friendly for an ADD-diagnosed society:
unbelievably short, complex, infectious bursts of polyrhythms and
spirit. Eighteen tracks. on Ace Fu Records $13.47
http://www.ab-cd.com/icbin/media/ACEF37.2

MANYFINGERS - Our Worm Shadow CD+DVD.
8 tracks. Manyfingers (aka multi-instrumentalist Chris Cole) emerged
out of the shady and mysterious Bristol scene that spawned the likes of
Flying Saucer Attack, Movietone, Third Eye Foundation and Amp.
Previously best known as Third Eye Foundation luminary Matt Elliott’s
right hand man, cellist and drinking buddy, Cole has also been a
sometime member of legendary pastoralists Movietone as well as being
the current drummer of the excellent post rock band Soeza. Cole's
relative obscurity is set to change with the release of his full lenght
debut album Our Worn Shadow - a magnificently ambitious multi layered
gem of a record. He plays piano, drums, cello, spanish guitar,
accordion, vibraphone and other assorted instruments to create a
veritable whirlwind of sound. The record takes its cue from the Fourtet
of Pause and Rounds (taking in along the way influence from US based
hip hop futurists Dosh and Machine Drum) but adds Yann Tiersen style
accordion and string arrangements played with the intensity of Godspeed
You Black Emperor! at their ground shaking best. The cyclical motifs of
Philip Glass and Steve Reich are notable ensuring that the album
presses all the right neo classical buttons — often comparable to the
best work of Max Richter, Rachel's, Sylvain Chauveaux and Terry
Reilly.
Its an album of opposites — the mournful accordions and weeping
cello's
recall the melancholy of Matt Elliott's recent 'Drinking
Songs' yet
when a female vocal is introduced on the excellent standout For
Measured Shores, the effect is somewhat like a gallic late period
Blonde Redhead. The record is impressive for the variety of melody and
sounds produced, the consistently imaginative string and horn
arrangements, subtle sampling and frenzied, frenetic drumming.
Don't
expect the live Manyfingers to hide behind the security of a lap top
either. Manyfingers shows are life affirming and unpredictable— its a
life changing record that ultimately defies categorization. on

BROOK, MICHAEL - Rockpaperscissors
Musicians' musician and sound innovator Michael Brook releases his
highly anticipated third solo disc RockPaperScissors. Recorded in Los
Angeles, England, Scotland and Bulgaria, the disc features
contributions from renowned artists Richard Evans (Peter Gabriel), Paul
Buchanan (Blue Nile), Claude Chalhoub, Ben Christophers and Lisa
Germano, as well as an exquisite posthumous collaboration with the
legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. With several arrangements for full
orchestra, and the celebrated Bulgarian Women's Cosmic Voices
choir,
the album is the culmination of three years' work -- which Brook
has
described as 'excavating your muse!' The sound is unique:
beautifully
arranged, atmospheric and ambient elements create the space for his
self-described “deconstructed rock” to flourish. Collaboration has
been at the heart of Brook's career, working with a diversity of
international artists such as Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Youssou
N'Dour,
Mary Margaret O'Hara, Bryan Ferry, and The Pogues, to scratch the
surface. He invented the infinite guitar , as played by U2's Edge.

With his latest collection of songs, Brook worked with co-producer
Richard Evans and an eclectic cast of talent. Lisa Germano's
personal
lyrics and haunting vocal set the tone for 'Want,' while
singer/songwriter Shira Myrow's lyrical contribution to the
infectious
title track was interpreted by beloved Blue Nile vocalist Paul
Buchanan. Widely known to music connoisseurs, Brook feels that
RockPaperScissors is for him, relatively mainstream: 'It is
accessible
music, more accessible than what I've done in the past.' He
adds, 'the
record is a kind of travelogue… so I hope people find it evocative and
that it takes them somewhere intriguing.' Brook debuted in 1985
with
the critically acclaimed Hybrid on EG Records. His 1992 follow-up
Cobalt Blue was released on 4AD along with the 1993 recording Live at
the Aquarium . Recent projects include production for Jorane (Six
Degrees), the music for the much lauded ”Ashes and Snow” exhibition,
currently in L.A., and the score for Paramount Classics' upcoming
global warming documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” on High Wire

KNIFE, THE - Silent Shout
"Already championed by buzz-talkers and tastemakers, Mute
announces the
release of Silent Shout, The Knife's third album and first domestic
release. The world of The Knife is precise, particular, dark, occult,
peculiar. The mysterious duo work mostly on their own in splendid
isolation. Silent Shout features The Knife's lurking, textured
vocals
steeped in a tangled, dark surrealist underbrush. It's is an
astounding
achievement, intriguing & bewildering, enigmatic and engaging, and
never less than compelling. Its jaw-dropping fusion of technology and
emotion, circuitry and the soul, melodrama and melody, will leave you
gasping." on Mute U.s. $13.97

HAMPSON, ROBERT + STEVEN HESS - Robert Hampson + Steven Hess
"A sensible combination, brought to light by a chance contact
resulting
in a fairly lengthy process of recording, listening, and mixing. Robert
Hampson, is, of course, the visionary behind sound behemoths Loop and
Main, and even served a highly productive position within Godflesh,
Organum, and also collaborated with Jim O'Rourke. Steven Hess is a
percussionist who provides comfortably obscure rhythms and textures for
Pan American, Fessenden, On, and Haptic. Together, Hampson and Hess
create a delightful peephole into the space where resonance from
various percussions exist. These are the indirect moments that are just
as real as those obvious times when a drummer nails the snare drum in
4/4 time. This is the stuff that for without, the attack, the beat, the
percussion itself, would be lifeless pricks of meaningless sound. These
recordings are filled with the active and excited ghost of interaction
with material; highly unreal at times, and undeniably human at others.
For those familiar with their previous endeavors, this is certain to
please. For others, you are about to hear the collaboration of two
people who know exactly what they are doing, and have created an even
more powerful joined effort." on Crouton $11.97

ULTRAVOX - Ultravox (Remastered)
Digitally remastered edition of the debut album by one of the first
bands considered to be "new wave". Their sound was not as
aggressive as
their punk contemporaries, yet much more complex than your average
"hair rock" band. John Foxx was the protagonist of this
group, along
with friends Billy Currie, Chris Cross, Steve Shears and Warren Cann
had more in common with Roxy Music than Led Zeppelin. Foxx and Currie
forged a sound based on synthesizers that expanded on the base proposed
by Kraftwerk and added a dose of romanticism and layered sounds, aided
and abetted by producer Brian Eno. Island helped them score a minor hit
with "My Sex" as well as garnering loads of attention with
the hip
intelligensia of the time. The original track lineup is augmented on
this edition with 4 live tracks recorded in the era: "Slip
Away",
"Modern Love", "The Wild, The Beautiful & The

was produced by Steve Lillywhite and augmented with 6 bonus tracks. The
16-page booklet includes sleevenotes and all of the lyrics printed out
for the first time. While not as immediately head turning as their
debut, this album sports the highlights of "Rockwrok",
"The Man Who
Dies Everyday" and "Hiroshima Mon Amour". The special
bonus tracks
include the non-Lp track "Quirks", a rare alternate version
of
"Hiroshima Mon Amour", the single version of "Young

two
songs. on Universal Int'l $13.47

ULTRAVOX - Systems Of Romance (Remastered) plus bonus tracks
2006 digitally remastered edition of the group's third and final
album
for Island Records was originally released in 1978. The original set
(produced by Conny Plank) has been augmented with the addition of 2
bonus tracks and the 16 page booklet includes sleeventoes and full
lyrics. Plank was a most appropriate choice to helm this outing with 4
Kraftwerk and numerous Krautrock albums as well as work with David
Bowie and Brian Eno to his credit. Highlights include "Slow
Motion",
"Quiet Men", "Dislocation" and "Just For A
Moment". The bonus tracks
added to this edition include the non-LP track "Cross Fade"
and the

SOME OF THE INTERESTING THINGS YOU'LL SEE ON A LONG DISTANCE
FLIGHT:
Crepuscule Dialogue North-South Tour February 1982
LTM is pleased to announce the CD reissue of the classic Crepuscule
1982 tour souvenir compilation Some of the interesting things you’ll
see on a long distance flight. All tracks on the 76 minute CD were
recorded live on the Dialogue North-South tour in February 1982, an
ambitious multi-media package which visited London, Paris, Amsterdam,
Brussels and several other major cities. Organized by Les Disques du
Crepuscule, the tour CD features exclusive live recordings by several
key participants, including the legendary Durutti Column, Paul Haig (ex
Josef K, here with Rhythm of Life), chic French electro-samba trio
Antena, Belgian Factory band The Names, poet Richard Jobson and emcee
Wally Van Middendorp (of Minny Pops). Long-deleted, the extended CD
also features a deluxe booklet featuring many rare photographs,
together with an on-the-spot report by journalist Johnny Waller, and
liner notes by James Nice. A facsimile of the original tour programme
is also included. The CD is a must for collectors of Crepuscule and
Factory Records artists, not least because it includes songs by Durutti
Column, Paul Haig and The Names which were never studio recorded, and
do not appear elsewhere. Track list online on Les Temps Modernes

BUDD, HAROLD / BRYARS, GAVIN / HASSELL, JON - Myths 3: La Nouvelle
Serenite
This is a reissue of the third volume in this early Sub Rosa
compilation series, originally released in 1987. Features long tracks
from Jon Hassell (duo with J.A. Deane, from 1985), never released
since; Harold Budd (duo with Eugen Bowen, from 1983) in the mood of
"The Serpent in Quicksilver" (with a splendid steel guitar);
Gavin
Bryars (duo with Andrew Thomson, from 1987); an unpublished sketch for
two pianos called "Sketch For Sub Rosa" (later published on
ECM with a
chamber ensemble); and an excerpt from Les Archives Sonores Sub Rosa, a
short film without image. Spanning from 1972-1975, Harold Budd
created four individual works under the collective title The Pavilion
of Dreams, produced by ambient pioneer Brian Eno. His two subsequent
collaborations with Eno, The Plateaux of Mirror and The Pearl,
established his trademark atmospheric piano style. Jon Hassell's
first
recordings were made with minimalist masters La Monte Young and Terry
Riley, through whom he met the Hindustani raga master, Pandit Pran
Nath. From his studies of the classical Indian music of the Kirana
tradition he adapted these techniques to the trumpet and developed a
new style of playing which forms the basis of his own unique sound
world. Gavin Bryars has written a large number of works, including
three operas, and a number of instrumental pieces. His first major work
as composer was The Sinking of the Titanic on Brian Eno's Obscure
label
in 1975. This collection gathers together the most stunning of
ambient, atmospheric sound worlds from three very important composers.
