Hello,

SND’s Mark Fell inaugurates Editions Mego’s newly minted Sensate Focus label this week, delivering another advanced lesson in abstract House architecture which recalls SND’s mighty ‘Tender Love’ album, fused with an appropriation of deep, classic Chicago House. There are rumours of more ‘club-friendly’ material with Fell’s involvement on the horizon – which is a supremely good thing in our books. Great twelve from the seemingly unstoppable Editions Mego family – a big recommendation.

Type Records, meanwhile, swing back to abstract, avant realms with Mike Shiflet’s visceral, complex album ‘Merciless’. The follow-up to ‘Sufferers’ features tricky max/msp processing and detailed manipulations of string drone provided by C Spencer Yeh, among others, creating an otherworldly, unpredictably individual soundsphere bound to be appreciated by lovers of far-reaching experiemental composition. Limited initial copies on red wax for the collectors.

Hamburg’s legendary Golden Pudel club has made a small number of CD’s available of a classic Demdike Stare set at the club from last year, available here for a limited time, and featuring 50 minutes of material housed in a card slipcase featuring the original flyer art.

Nate Young jangled our nerves good and proper with his hazardously soporific Regression volumes for Ideal and NNA Tapes, the latter featuring highly in our top albums list for last year. His third and final edition lands this week on the obscure Japanese Rockatansky Records and it’s every bit as essential as the others. High voltage electronics are carved into 20 auditory hallucinations of the most rarified ilk, strongly recommended to followers of Decimus, Demdike, early electronics or Industrial library records.

Some of you might want to turn away now: Vinyl-On-Demand unleash another stack of opulent reissues this week. Best of the lot is their 2nd collection scanning of John Duncan’s deeply abstract and far reaching oeuvre 1978-1985 – 5LPs +7″ of intriguing avant-garde conceptualism, and there’s also editions of Paul Nova’s coldwave holy grail ‘Trees Without Leaves’ including bonus, unreleased material, and the ultra-rare output of unhinged Frenchman Lucas Trouble to sink your teeth into. All are limited and produced with the highest attention to detail.

If you’ve checked out the Carter Tutti Void album, or indeed if you’re a long time follower of Throbbing Gristle, you should head straight for the excellent debut from Control Unit, an album of deeply abstract and unhinged/modified cold wave tropes, imbued with corrupted guitar noise and an eerie, isolated production style which dark souls among you will clock with relish. The same Italian imprint, Backwards, also delivers a darkly blissful side of hypnotic ambient atmospheres by Fabio Orsi, limited to 200 copies only and recalling the work of Fennesz and Wolfgang Voigt’s seminal Gas work. Promising start from a label to watch.

“Hauntology before it’s time” is how David Toop sums up his 1981 collab with Steve Beresford and David Cunningham as General Strike. (Re)issued on vinyl for the first time, it’s a lost classic of 4th world futurism tripping time zones and styles with a learned awareness and uniquely British sense of patchworked psychedelia.

Also out this week: a new album of perception-challenging composition by important American Avant-Garde figure Philip Corner, Move D and Juju & Jordash with their debut ‘Magic Mountain High’ twelve for the Workshop label, plus new releases and reissues from Lone, Omar S, Jimmy Edgar, Dark Sky, Nurse With Wound, LHF, Ramp, Addison Groove, Tempa, Clark, Ben Chasny, Lotus Plaza, Talk Talk, Amit, Skudge, Presk, Moodymann, Tobias vs Villalobos, Soundway, Sofrito plus the amazing debut from The Lost Rivers, a precious double vinyl edition of 23 Skidoo’s classic ‘Seven Songs’, and the forthcoming ‘R.I.P’ album from Actress, now available to pre-order!

Have yourselves a fabulous week…

Peace! nekkers..xx

MIKE SHIFLET
Merciless (Limited Vinyl Edition)
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
Type Recordings
LP // £11.99

*Limited edition pressing, initial stock comes on transparent red vinyl if you’re fast…* As promised, Type follow up Mike Shiflet’s ‘Sufferers’ side with a further exposition of his individual and far-reaching sound palette. A member of C Spencer Yeh’s revolving Burning Star Core unit, and a prolific collaborator with the likes of Daniel Menche, Chris Corsano, Pete Swanson and many more, Shiflet has honed an intensely visceral feel for tone and texture which makes his records so intriguing to lovers of experimental composition and music making. With some production/audio mastering assists from fellow Columbus, Ohio-based musician Joe Panzner, on ‘Merciless’ Shiflet engages with corrosive textures from the off, enticing us in with fractured small sounds on ‘Feeble Breaths’ before weaving a lattice of quick-drying fibreglass strands over your cochlea which become infested with scuttling, insipid rhythms and abstract noise abrasions designed by Panzner on the lloopp software for max/msp. This induction, by contrast, makes the second half piece of evolving horror drones in ‘Exodus And Exile’ that much more affective, while the 2nd side plays through as one longer, queasy composition veering from cacophonous noise to wheezing drone and chilly isolation with added cassette manipulation by Jason Zeh, Cello by Marina Peterson and Violin from C. Spencer Yeh.

DEMDIKE STARE
15 Mai 2011: Live at Golden Pudel Club
ELECTRONIC
PUDEL PRODUKTE
CD // £6.99

So here it is – a unique 59-minute live performance by Demdike Stare recorded at Hamburg’s infamous Golden Püdel Club, released by the clubs own Pudel Produkte imprint. Unlike their numerous mixes, this is a recording of a live set, comprising original material from their archives woven with select source material and a lulling, hypnotic sense of purpose. Those familiar with Demdike’s material should be able to discern traces of individual tracks, but unless you’ve witnessed one of their live shows, you’ve likely never heard them assembled like this. Limited copies – grab one while you can.

NATE YOUNG
Regression Vol. 3: Other Days
ELECTRONIC
ROCKATANSKY RECORDS
CD // £14.99

The second volume in this series was one of our top five albums of 2011, so we’re pretty excited to finally have the third and final volume of petrifying somnambulant tremors from the Wolf Eyes frontman Nate Young. We made no bones about our love of the first two issues in the series, for Ideal and NNA Tapes respectively, and we’ll make none about this one: it’s just supremely original and grows with every fresh listen. With an elemental mastery of pure, high voltage electronics, Young carves clangourous, abstract shapes from tape loops, electronics and synthesizer, creating 20 auditory hallucinations of a visceral and disturbingly possessed character. We’ve already gushed at length over the first two volumes, so suffice it to say we’re massively into this one, too. Fans of owt from Decimus to Industrial sound FX library records, to Daphne Oram or Demdike Stare will have to make time for this incredible series – we just can’t recommend it highly enough.

PAUL NOVA
Trees without Leaves (Extended Edition)
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
Vinyl On Demand
2LP // £22.99

**Limited edition of 500 individually numbered copies housed in gatefold jacket** Paul Nova’s ‘Trees Without Leaves’ is a bona fide holy grail of minimal/coldwave-pop. Original (limited to 500) copies now fetch over £200 so there’s much credit due to Vinyl-on-Demand for this pristine double LP reissue packed out with more than 30 minutes of recently discovered and previously unreleased tracks. It’s all the work of one Paul Nova, who first cut his teeth with Bizarre Unit, who released a solitary 7″ back in 1981. Not long after, in 1982, the group disbanded and Paul founded Exhibit One Records to release a series of 7″s leading up to 1984’s ‘Trees Without Leaves’, an eight-track LP now expanded to 22 tracks. The original LP features on the first disc, with Paul’s dry monotone delivery balanced by pop-wise synth melodies and guitar basslines bearing strong resemblance to early records from The Human League and Fad Gadget. The bonus material is stranger, less polished, comprising instrumental backing tracks and demo versions of a lonelier, late night nature and including a desiccated cover of Brian Eno’s ‘Baby’s On Fire’. Another treasure unearthed from the mighty Vinyl on Demand…

JOHN DUNCAN
First Recordings 1978-85 V1.2
ELECTRONIC
Vinyl On Demand
Deluxe 5LP+7″ Box Set // £74.99

**Limited edition of 600 individually numbered copies with certificate of ownership** The hugely intriguing sound artist and sonic conceptualist John Duncan is subject of a 2nd, sprawling VoD chapter following a first volume back in 2006. Since 1978 Duncan has engaged with a plethora of avant-garde disciplines, amassing a distinguished and exploratory catalogue of sounds on his own AQM and Allquestions imprints, besides many more releases on Touch, Die Stadt, and Planam. He’s collaborated with equally inquisitive minds such as The Hafler Trio’s Andrew McKenzie, Chris & Cosey, Zeitkratzer, and Pan Sonic, investigating the liminal boundaries of sonic perception and consistently challenging convention. On ‘First Recordings 1978-1985 V1.2’, VoD have mined his archives to present a huge range of otherworldly recordings. LP 1, a split between AQM and LAMFS entitled ‘Organic’ features primordial 18 minutes of ‘Broken Promise’ and nine minutes of “water drum” on ‘Gala’, plus abstract 7″ experiments with Chris & Cosey. LP 2 features his work with shortwave radio including a jarring cut-up of ‘Police Radio’. LP’s 3 and 4 supply the mind-bending extended noise abstractions of ‘Riot’ and ‘Brutal Birthday Soundtrack from 1984 and 1985, plus some shorter elemental drone and noise pieces. LP 5 features the disturbing acousmatic erotica and swampy VHS-tape noise of ‘Phantom’ and ‘Purge’. Seekers of the outer limits should look no further – this is another spellbinding set from this reliably lavish imprint.

CONTROL UNIT
The Fugitives
ELECTRONIC
BACKWARDS
LP // £12.99

**Limited edition of 300 housed in handmade silkscreened sleeve. Tipped for fans of Atelecine, Carter Tutti Void, Factory Floor** Ninni Morgia and Silvia Kastel make their first appearance as Control Unit on Italy’s freshly minted Backwards label. Guitarist Ninni Morgia is a respected member of the New York underground scene, known for his work with La Otracina for Holy Mountain and Ultramarine Records. His co-conspirator Silvia Kastel was a willing participant in his Ninni Morgia Control Unit, and together they’ve also collaborated with eminent avant-garde duo Kommissar Hjuler und Mama Baer. On ‘The Fugitives’ they drag us on a downward spiral of tranquilized, corrupted and multitracked guitar and minimal synth noise layered with vocals ranging from suggestive growls to etheric ventilations and unconscious poetics. We’re distinctly reminded of Sasha Grey’s Atelecine or Nik Void’s Factory Floor appearances on the murky episode ‘Again’, while ‘Live In Your Mind’ is a possible descendant of ‘Hamburger Lady’. However they’re most interesting when enmeshed in the druggily smudged lattice of overgrown FX on ‘Don’t Go Out’, while the visceral, viscous textures of final track ‘The Fugitives’ has the feel of blasted early concrete, ideal for uncomfortable listens after over-indulgent sessions. Really strong debut – recommended.

PHILIP CORNER
Italian Air: Wind, Water & Metal
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
RICERCA SONORA
LP // £16.99

**Limited edition of 300 including two inserts** The first release on Ricerca Sonora is a new album by the important American Avant-Garde figure Philip Corner. A contemporary of John Cage, Corner studied composition with Henry Cowell and Otto Luening and musical analysis with Oliver Messaiaen. He was a founding member of the Fluxus movement, founder (with James Tenney and Malcolm Goldstein) of the Tone Roads Ensemble, the resident musician and composer for the Judson dance theatre, and co-founder of Gamelan Son of Lion with Barbara Benary and Daniel Goode. ‘Italian Air: Wind Water & Metal’ presents three previously unpublished compositions by Philip Corner recorded in various locations. “On side 1 “Ear Wave” (Venice, October 1994) is a long piece for Korean cymbal in water: an ecstatic composition recorded and played outdoor by Phil Corner; acousmatic interjections of metallic resonances and subtle water sounds; you can listen [to] the distant sound of the midnight bell of San Marco in Venice. On the second side the track “Gong/Ear” recorded in June 1990 (S. Andreadi Rovereto, Italy) Phil Corner plays gong together with rain and thunder for an abstracted and strongly emotional track. Followed by “I Respiri/ The Breaths” an avant-garde composition for alphorn and gong recorded in 1992 (at Teatro Scandicci).”

GENERAL STRIKE (STEVE BERESFORD & DAVID TOOP)
Danger In Paradise
ELECTRONIC
Staubgold
LP // £15.99

David Toop has suggested that Danger In Paradise, an album of material he recorded with Steve Beresford and David Cunningham as General Strike between 1979 and ’81 as “hauntology before its time”. In some sense he’s right: some of the queer-pitched electronics and impishly sinister samples on the record wouldn’t sound out of place on a Mordant Music or Focus Group transmission. But first and foremost, General Strike is a potting shed avant-dub masterpiece, covering enormously wide ground: ‘My Other Body’ is a beautifully bass-heavy, almost Antena-esque pop original voiced by Dawn Roberts (singing lyrics culled from Foucault’s Mental Illness And Psychology), ‘Guided Missiles’ is nuclear-paranoid doo-wop, and Sun Ra’s ‘Interplanetary Music’ and ‘We Travel The Spaceways’ are reinterpreted in a way that somehow reconciles their afro-futurist origins with a bimbling, bumbling sensibility unique to Blighty’s suburbs. Cunningham’s extraordinary tape treatments and the ensemble’s anything-could-happen, patchwork approach to composition place the album at a heart of a British DIY tradition that has brought us The Shadow Ring, Flaming Tunes, Cleaners From Venus and This Heat among others (it’s no surprise to learn that portions of it were recorded at This Heat’s Cold Storage studio space). All in all a terrific, gloriously unusual record – originally issued on cassette by Touch in ’84, and later on CD by Piano, this new edition from Staubgold represents its first time on vinyl. Essential.

LUCAS TROUBLE
In a fit of delirium: 1979-82
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
Vinyl On Demand
2LP // £22.99

**Edition of 500 individually numbered copies, remastered and housed in a double gatefold sleeve** VoD expose the nether regions of obscure French minimal/synth music with two LPs of ultra-rare recordings by Lucas Trouble. In his many guises – The Gitanes, Jerking Idols, The Mystic Riders From Spectral South, Temple Gates, Vietnam Veterans, to name a few – he’s notched up over 300 releases in the past 30 years, oscillating wildly between unhinged avant-pop to spiky punk and spookily evocative synth instrumentals. ‘In A Fit Of Delirium’ sums up his nascent aesthetic nicely, presenting one side of early, and previously unreleased recordings from ’78 and ’79, plus one side of tracks from the sought-after ‘Le Roy Defigure’ LP on Invisible Records and another disc collecting his even-lesser known tapes ‘Theatre Cruel / Euphoric Pubelle’ (1980) and ‘Kaiserthon Suite Music for Anormal Movies and Sonic Lous’ (1982). Collected, they form an eerily enticing world, dryly psychedelic and almost cinematic in parts, seeming to perilously teeter on the brink of some kind of paranoid breakdown. A must-have for every serious collector of early and obscure minimal/wave electronics and synth-music.

FABIO ORSI
Von Zeit Zu Zeit
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
BACKWARDS
LP // £16.99

**Limited edition of 200 copies with 6 photo inserts in stamped and sealed envelope** Promising new Italian imprint, Backwards, presents a hypnotic side of two extended drone pieces by persistently active and talented composer, Fabio Orsi. Since 2006 Orsi has amassed a vast stockade of releases for a plethora of labels – from Students Of Decay to Digitalis and Preservation, among others – creating a constellation of astral-minded electro-acoustic sonorities imbued with an earthy quality thanks to his fascination with and use of samples from the vast Alan Lomax archives of pre-war folk. There’s no vintage samples on ‘Von Zeit Zu Zeit’ (trans: From Time To Time – hark at me), just synth guitar and filters, but there is something subtly elemental, celestially graceful about it which begs comparison to Wolfgang Voigt’s most beautiful Gas works or the spirits of classic Berlin kosmiche. The first piece ‘Von Zeit’ is tangibly colder, pregnant with an unknown and dreamy darkness that’s not so much threatening as it is mystically widescreen and transportive. The 2nd ‘Zu Zeit’ conducts a more unstable sort of otherworldly weather system, a natural transferrence of hot and cold air where distant, Fennesz-like guitar squall rolls in from the horizon to eventually consume and disperse as organically as it appeared. Warmest recommendations.

SENSATE FOCUS
Sensate Focus 10
TECHNO / HOUSE
SENSATE FOCUS
12″ // £9.99

Editions Mego introduce their eagerly anticipated Sensate Focus sub-label with an advanced lesson in abstract House architecture. Keeping their cards close to their chest, we’re only allowed to know that it “might” be SND’s Mark Fell, but let’s not play silly buggers: we’ve got ears; it’s got to be him. Mego’s CEO Peter Rehberg also offered to The Wire: “[It’s] music that could be played in nightclubs containing nice keyboard sounds and slightly unusual beats”, and that Mego “liked the keyboard sounds from early House music, but had got bored of the rhythms. We did not want to throw the baby away with the bathwater, so decided to keep some things. So we kept the water and threw the baby away.” The “water” manifests as plush, convective chords and trickling melodies, fused with restlessly swinging, tactile rhythms which well warrant the allusion of focussed, tantric sexual techniques in the label name. Ultimately, it’s got the optimised soul flow of SND’s classic ‘Tender Love’ crossed with the retro-vintage NY and Chicago resurrections of DJ Sprinkles, and if you know what that means…It’s a no brainer. Limited copies!

MAGIC MOUNTAIN HIGH
The Schnitzel Box Vol. 1
TECHNO / HOUSE
WORKSHOP
12″ // £6.99

**Killer new EP from Workshop pairing up Move D & JuJu & Jordash. Includes photo-printed insert (21.5 x 29cm)** Trippy 3-tracker fresh out of Berlin’s Workshop. Magic Mountain High is a new project from Move D and Juju & Jordash. The A-side is a dense, droning slab of Technofied House built from raw, affective elements and intended to spin you upside out. B-side there’s a dry but fruitly insistent swinger with wicked dissonant synthlines, and a deeper Berlin jacker spiced with rude Chicago vibes.

LONE
Crystal Caverns 1991
TECHNO / HOUSE
R&S Records
12″ // £5.49

Awesome, super-calorific rave confections from Matt Cutler, heralding his mind-bending Galaxy Garden album, for R&S. The title of ‘Crystal Caverns 1991’ tells you exactly where your man’s head is at – this is some of the most psychedelic, hectic and idea-heavy music he’s ever produced, but its flights of fancy are kept firmly rooted to the dance thanks to wicked edits and percussion hits, the sway and shimmy of the latter giving the whole track a proper carnival swagger. The roller coaster drops are worthy of R&S in its infancy, rude Belgian stabs and whooshing synths working in dynamic tandem for guaranteed club satisfaction. ‘Vulcan Mill Acid’ stays true to the old-skool theme, this time riding on the stankiest 303 lines you’ve ever heard. Mental.

OMAR S
998
TECHNO / HOUSE
FXHE
12″ // £10.99

Three tracks of esoteric and functional 313 House from the AOS, plus an untitled banger from Patrik Sjeren. We’re really feeling the haunting piano loops and rugged swing of Omar’s ‘Income Tax Refund Dance’ and especially the offset craftiness of ‘3C 273’ – a rare occurrence of your boy stepping off the 4/4 kicks to killer, shifty effect for the dancers. For measure, there’s also a distorted but funky banger from Patrik Sjeren.

DARK SKY
Black Rainbows EP
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Black Acre
2×12″ // £12.99

Dark Sky return to the label who released their acclaimed 2010 debut with the latest results of their ongoing Bass evolution. With ‘Tremor’ and ‘F Technology’ they nod to the clunky clonkstep of Untold, Randomer, Blawan et al with crafty percussive cadence and surging synth dissonance, while ‘Zoom’ and ‘Totum’ dips to clipped Garage rhythms coated with fine and moody electronics melodies.

This One’s For The Children
Hotflush Recordings
12″ // £6.99

Hotflush herald electro-sleazeball Jimmy Edgar’s forthcoming album with a future-funked two-track single. ‘This One’s For The Children’ sounds like early Cybotron, jamming with raunchy vocals and fizzing jazz-funk keys on a taut, rippling electro rhythm, while ‘Switch Switch’ fires up slapbass riffs and silver-gloved claps with a hypercoloured nod to the purple Prince. Come and get it.

Anticon
LP // £10.99

The seeds of this unlikely collaboration between Sufjan Stevens, rapper Serengeti and singer/producer Son Lux, new on Anticon, were sown out when Sufjan and Geti met over a Buck 65 remix of a song written by Castanets for 2009’s Dark Was The Night compilation; a period of internet back-and-forthing commenced, resulting in this strangely enjoyable EP. The presence of Stevens means the emphasis is on sung vocals, which on some…

LP // £11.99

Stone cold classic Dub LP, faithfully reissued by Clocktower Records. If there was ever a time to judge a record by its cover, this is it. Lurking behind the kinetic cover art is an LP of truly seminal provenance; ten tracks tweaked, nudged and carved up by the legendary, one-of-a-kind producer Scientist at King Tubby’s studio in 1981. You’re best ignoring the “Executive Producer” credits to Clocktower label owner Brad…

DARK SKY
Black Rainbows EP

LHF
Keepers Of The Light
Keysound
2CD // £12.99

Making your debut album a double might seem like an act of hubris, but LHF have got talent to spare – No Fixed Abode, Amen Ra, Double Helix and Low Density Matter could all, we’re sure, turn out top-quality solo albums if they wanted, so it’s only fair that they should all contribute as fully as they do to this collective effort, new on Martin Clark’s Keysound. LHF are often…
VERSA & ROWL
Lunar
Smokin Sessions
12″ // £7.99

Smokin’ Session, the early home of Synkro and DJ Rum, presents Versa’s lush collaboration with Rowl. On ‘Lunar’ they arrange flickering 2-step rhythms with hovering subs and spectral, dubbed-out melodies in homage to Burial. B-side’s ‘Zodiac’ is the highlight, a mercurial infusion of R&B soul snippets with blue bass licks at a quick-stepping D&B flux, while ‘warewolf’ completes the set on a ruduced halfstep dip.

Ramp 50
Ramp Recordings
CD // £2.99

Fifty releases deep, Ramp sift out the best of them from Zomby, Falty DL, SBTRKT & Sampha, Doc Daneeka, Dro Carey and all your other faves. It’s proof, if needed, of this label’s prowess within the UK and international Bass rhizome, mixing pop-worthy hits with faithfully underground and experimental aces in the finest tradition. For those who’ve slept on the label, Ramp 50 is the perfect introduction, and for those…
CHAMPION / MA1 / NAUGHTY
RKS Allstars Volume 3 EP
ROSKA KICKS & SNARES
12″ // £5.99

Champion, MA1 and Naughty wheel out three sturdy hardcore House/Bass hitters for Roska’s 3rd ‘Allstars’ collection. Man-of-the-moment Champion comes hot and heavy with the soundsystem ruination of ‘Selecta’, fusing pitch-dipping Niche/Bassline elements with rogue bashment flavour. Flipside, Roska’s fellow Rinse FM resident MA1 lends some Dutch-style synth flavour to the Afro-Caribbean shimmy of ‘Bassbox’, and Naughty’s ‘Unstoppable’ teeters on drunkenly bent synths and tightly wound bass grind.
THE TOWN
The Movement / Pulse
ClekClekBoom Recordings
12″ // £7.99

Tightly wound, pendulous Funky from Parisian producers Karve & Kazey. Bass heads might well recognise Kazey from his coupla 12″s with Bulldog on Dress 2 Sweat, but no mither if you didn’t, because these sound nothing like that. ‘The Movement’ is a straight-up, get-down Funky roller with Afro-inflected rhythms and Jamaican-accented bass weight comparable with older Crazy Cousins productions. It’s a fat production and all but it’s funny how dated…
ADDISON GROOVE
Transistor Rhythm
50 WEAPONS
CD // £9.99

Electrifying album of 808 party music from Addison Groove, on Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons imprint. Though we stand by his Hesdhunter material, it’s fair to say that Tony Williams has found his calling as Addison Groove, drawing on juke, electro, dubstep, ghetto-house and jeep-rocking hip-hop variants to create super-heavy bass music that leaves you with no alternative but to dance and/or bite your lower lip raw. You can imagine the cast…
PROXIMA
Formal Junction / Grunge
Tempa
12″ // £5.99

Tempa introduce a deadly side from this Dutch producer/DJ. A cousin of Icicle, Proxima’s Dubstep sound shares much in common with his relative; from the elastic dynamism of his bass shapes to the clinical precision of his kevlar-coated drums. On ‘Formal Junction’ these values are fully upfront, designed to twist bodies with a commanding torque. On ‘Grunge’ the formula is tweaked to an introverted sort of cyber-dread pressure. Fans of…
MILYOO
Classic (VVV Mix)
Night Audio
12″ // £5.99

For their 4th release, Night Audio introduce the shapeshifting electronics of Milyoo to their fold. A fave of Mary Anne Hobbs, his ‘Classic’ cut adorns brittle swingers’ rhythm with murky bass undulations and unstable electronic surfaces deflecting dark-lit melodies in all directions. The VVV remix retunes the rhythm to a coarse 2-step schematic. Flipside Milyoo slips into a stranger fusion of yearning indie/art-pop  vox and offbeat Acidic Boogie grooves with…
B.RIDDIM
In Theory EP
Third Ear Recordings
12″ // £7.99

B. Riddim is Luis Fidalgo Sequiera, a 24 year old Portugeuse ex-pat living in London. ‘In Theory’ is a humid hybrid of Bass styles ranging from mellow, swinging Garage on the title track, through strange Dubstep orchestrations on ‘Dance Dub’, to mystic Mid-Eastern electronic inflections of ‘6300 Bars’ and swirling, raved-up Breakbeats for the London posse on ‘Elevation Dub’.
HATTI VATTI
You featuring Cian Finn (Phaeleh / Indigo Mixes)
New Moon Recordings
12″ // £7.99

**Blue vinyl** Indigo and Phaeleh remix Hatti Vatti’s ‘You’ for New Moon Recordings. Phaeleh’s take is typically smooth and mellifluous, kitting Cian’s drifting, eyes-shut vocal with plush subs and crisp, swinging woodblocks. Heard from Indigo’s perspective, Cian’s vocal leaves only wispy comtrails around the skittish, spidery drums, plangent keys and swallow-diving subs.
KOMONAZMUK
Underground (Paul Woolford Mix)
HENCH
12″ // £6.49

Komanazmuk and Paul Woolford trade their conventional tempos for an old-meets-nu skool rokker on H.E.N.C.H. On the original ‘Underground’ Komanazmuk instigates a deep, swinging Boogie-House style peppered with Hip Hop and Electro-Boogie samples to classy effect. Remixing at 140bpm, Paul Woolford offers his take on the “clonk” sound of Untold, Randomer, Blawan etc, with added AFXian edits and melodies arranged with seriously prime production values. Tipped for that one at…

The second volume in this series was one of our top five albums of 2011, so we’re pretty excited to finally have the third and final volume of petrifying somnambulant tremors from the Wolf Eyes frontman Nate Young. GENERAL STRIKE (STEVE BERESFORD & DAVID TOOP)
Danger In Paradise

But first and foremost, General Strike is a…

Chris Clark returns with his sixth album in 11 years on Warp, and is harder than ever to classify, pushing an exploded, shape-shifting IDM psychedelia full of unheimlich folk and natty prog inflections. Iradelphic is full of big, bold gestures – witness the wailing, wigged-out synth lead on opener ‘Tooth Moves’ – but it also has moments of delightful understatement, as shown on the cracked folk ramble ‘Ghosted’ and the…

**Edition of 300 pressed on translucent purple wax** Hotly tipped electronicists Discopolis (big with Pete Tong) and Ghosting Season weigh in tender remixes of Diagrams (Tunng’s Sam Genders) for Static Caravan. Ghosting Season’s remix shackles the original to a swaggered mid-tempo throb while the melodic elements gently spirals upward to heady…
ILPO VAISANEN
Asuma
Editions Mego
CD // £5.99

Pan Sonic ‘other half’ Ilpo Väisänen might not get the credit that the comparatively prolific Mika Vainio gets, but listening to this 2001 solo joint it’s hard to see why not. Maybe it’s because Vainio has had a whole handful of solo 12″s and albums when it took Väisänen until ‘Asuma’ to put together just one proper full-length, but as most of you probably already know, just because he’s not…

CD // £11.99

Second solo outing from Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt under the name Lotus Plaza, and a treat for anyone with a predilection for chiming, sun-dappled and stylishly drug-hazed guitar pop. Pundt’s aesthetic affinities evidently lie in a similar sphere to those of Deerhunter later Bradford Cox – the churchy, 4AD-style atmospherics of opener ‘Untitled’ paving the way for some really nice shoegaze and C86-inflected stuff – fans of The Mighty Lemondrops,…

Electric Empire
ED BANGER
12″ // £5.99

**Includes free download code redeemable from the label** Parisian Electro overlord meets Aussie Dubstep gyal on a sharp 4-track 12″. A-side’s ‘Electric Empire’ is a club-ready fusion of Dubstep lurch and Electro slyde with slightly cringey lyrics reeling off a list of “cool” labels, tracks, artists etc. But there’s a smart instrumental version anyway. Flipside’s ‘Wettex’ is better, locking onto a jabbing Ravers’ rhythm with hyperventilating R&B vox, while ‘Oh…
REPTILE YOUTH
Speeddance
HFN Music
7″ // £5.99

Posturing Danish dance-punk from the voracious Reptile Youth duo aka Mads Damsgaard Kristiansen and bassist Esben Valløe. Thankfully they’ve dropped the Reptiel and Retard moniker, picked up an executive producer and A&R man in Kaspar Bjørke and snaffled a wicked remake from Norwegian trio Deathcrush for their debut 7″. The original ‘Speeddance’ isn’t fast but we can see the kids losing their skittles in the middle of a festival to…

Mego’s CEO Peter Rehberg also offered to The Wire: “[It’s] music that could be played in nightclubs containing nice keyboard…
MAGIC MOUNTAIN HIGH
The Schnitzel Box Vol. 1

B-side there’s a dry but fruitly insistent swinger…
LONE
Crystal Caverns 1991
R&S Records
12″ // £5.49

Awesome, super-calorific rave confections from Matt Cutler, heralding his mind-bending Galaxy Garden album, for R&S. The title of ‘Crystal Caverns 1991’ tells you exactly where your man’s head is at – this is some of the most psychedelic, hectic and idea-heavy music he’s ever produced, but its flights of fancy are kept firmly rooted to the dance thanks to wicked edits and percussion hits, the sway and shimmy of the…
OMAR S
998

For measure, there’s also a distorted but funky banger…
SKUDGE / SAN PROPER
Dekmantel Anniversary Series
Dekmantel
12″ // £7.99

Dekmantel continue to celebrate their 5th anniversary in style with two surefire aces from Sweden’s Skudge and A’dam’s San Proper. On ‘Silent Running’ Skudge arrange throbbing Techno bass coated in grungy analogue detritus for those that know. With ‘Rattle (Station To Station)’ San Proper’s also in a filthy mood, jacking with caustic, haughty jack beats to drive the dirtiest swingers. Aces, both of ’em.
PRESK
Hesitate / Kook
Fourth Wave
12″ // £6.99

Bumping, itchy two-tracker from Presk, building on the promise of his previous drops on Fourth Wave, Soul Motive and Ten Thousand Yen. ‘Hesitate’ is exuberant, reinforced boogie-techno, replete with bulbous analogue b-lines, ravey vocal pressure and whipsmart MMM-style beat programming. For the more uptempo ‘Kook’ the funked-up bass returns, this time girded with supremely skippy drum syncopations. Presk sounds like he’s having a whale of a time – this is…
BEN SIMS / SKUDGE
New Blood / Slow Motion (Skudge Mix)
THEORY
12″ // £7.99

Gruff banger from Sims backed with a sleekly tucked-in Skudge remix. Sims’s ‘New Blood’ is built grizzled and burly for relentless peak time action, whereas Skudge’s remix of ‘Slow Motion’ is more concerned with mercurial rhythmic contours and optimised, biokinetic efficiency with buff analogue production values.
POLLYN / MOODYMANN
Pieces In Patterns
For Us
12″ // £7.99

**Limited edition of 1000** Rough Trade’s pet imprint, For Us, drops a peppy Indie-funk side from LA’s Pollyn, backed with mighty remixes from Shangaan Electro producer, Nozinja, and Detroit mainstay, Moodymann. Pollyn charm with the infectiously upbeat, super-cool roll of ‘How Small You Are’ plus a virtually unrecognisable cover of Portishead’s ‘Mysterons’ from their ‘Dummy’ LP, and the disco slyde of ‘Sometimes You Just Know’. Flipside, Nozinja does his sweetened…

UNTERTON
12″ // £7.99

Ostgut Ton kick off their white label Unterton series with deeply functional reworks of Tobias from Efdemin and the illustrious Villalobos/Loderbauer duo. Reworking ‘the title track from the ‘Leaning Over Backwards’ LP, Efdemin stealthily unfurls a smoky, slinky roller freckled with smallsound percussions and dreamy, hazily harmonised chords almost guaranteed to work wonders at the right time of the night. To ‘Girts’ Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer secrete their grid-dissolving…
BARKER & BAUMECKER
A Murder Of Crows EP
OSTGUT TON
12″ // £6.99

Tensile Rave-Tech missiles from Berghain residents and dynamic production duo, (Sam) Barker & (ND) Baumecker. ‘A Murder Of Crows (Part 1)’ locks into full-body swing mode with girder-strength bass rhythms offset by kinky, skipping percussion, all enveloped by looming darkside pads. ‘Part 2’ shakes it out on a more stripped down version concentrating on tucked-in drums and a more teasing sort of build. Proper weaponry, this. Tool up.
OCTOBER
String Theory
Simple
12″ // £7.99

Bristol’s House helmsman reputedly inspired Will Saul to revive his Simple imprint just to release this lovely EP, which is backed with a brilliant case of identity crisis from Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt. After a period of relative inaction, October aka Julian Smith returns to the groove, linking with studio partner Borai on ‘String Theory’, a fresh, elegantly paced and richly atmospheric Houser with shades of Matthew Herbert or Fred…
JOHN TEJADA & JUSTIN MAXWELL
Our Gigantic Mistake
Palette Recordings
12″ // £6.99

Oddball Electro-Tech-House and acidic rollers from prolific West Coast production duo. ‘Our Gigantic Mistake’ wends a weird path through offset and stickily dissonant modular synth lines fixed to a crisp electro rhythm. Flipside ‘Whoops (There It Is)’ jacks with a squelchy, modulating Electro-House vibe, and ‘Where’s The Cable?’ treks head-down into atmospheric, tranced-out Techno.
SANYS
Daily Situation
DOWNFALL THEORY
12″ // £6.99

**GREEN TRANSLUCENT VINYL** Stripped down House functions from Sanys and Alex Israel on the 2nd Downfall Theory 12″. ‘Daily Situation’ locks into a tracky Detroit House groove reminding of Omar-S – all hypnotic loops and layered acid evolutions – while ‘Ice VII’ ploughs a rut of gritty, lo-fi TechnoHouse. Alex Israel offers a rugged, Chicago-inspired remix of ‘Daily Situation’ replete with chunky toms and twirling synth dissonance.
VARIOUS / SOL SELECTAS
Moombah Fiesta Volume 1
Sol Selectas
12″ // £8.99

**Vinyl-only exclusive** LA’s DJ Sabo collects four far flung Moombah heaters on one hand-stamped white label. Face up you got Sabo’s quirky, kinky remix of Javier Estrada’s ‘Guerrero Aztec’ and Chief Boima & Uproot Andy’s Afro-infused 110bpm percolator ‘Sina Makossa’. Face down, there’s Cousin Culo’s horn-heated shimmy-shimmy ‘Enemies Get No Water’ and King Louis & DJ Orion’s Mexicano remix of ‘Tin Tin’.

ROB
Make It Fast, Make It Slow
Soundway Records
CD // £8.99

**Housed in recreation tip-on vinyl-style jacket** ‘Make It Fast, Make It Slow’ is the “other” LP by Rob, the Ghanaian cosmic funk legend whose ‘Funky Rob Way’ reissued by Soundway was one of our favourite records in 2011. Again, lead singer Rob is joined by the Mag-2 army band and their blazing horn section helmed by bandleader Amponsah Rockson. But this time the tempo is much slower, steamier, and with…
ROCKET JUICE & THE MOON
Rocket Juice & The Moon
Honest Jon’s Records
2LP // £13.99

Eagerly awaited, strongly Fela-flavoured LP on Honest Jon’s combining the talents of Damon Albarn, Tony Allen and Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Flea – plus a raft of special guests, including Erykah Badu and Paul Simonon. It can be hard not to be sceptical about these sort of star-studded chop-ups, but this one does feel cohesive and worthwhile – I mean, whatever you think of his dayjob, there’s no doubting Flea’s…

SOFRITO / DAPHNI
Kognokoura (Daphni Mix)
SOFRITO SPECIALS
12″ // £7.99

Sofrito special time, including a smart Daphni edit! ‘Kognokoura’ is a prime slice of Afro-Disco cut in Paris by legendary griot singer Niama Makalou and a group of fellow Malian ex-pat musicians. It was to be Niama’s one and only vinyl release, but Sofrito have rescued it from obscurity, giving those loose handclaps, tinkling Balafon patterns and bumpy bass vamps a new lease of life. Daphni’s edit evens the groove…
