Official Press Release:

Artist: Dato
Title: Hard To Find EP
Cat No.: MULLET033
Label: Mullet Records

Release Date: 25/04/11

Thomas Erichsen and David Kosteljanetz aka DATO are a real jewel in the Danish crown and with a string of hits already under their belts, we were simply over-the-moon when the boys approached us to sign this superb EP.

So let’s kick-start with the title track – Hard To Find is a boogie bassline vocoder driven wonder, that’s awash with Nordic melody-lines, funky guitar licks and a chorus-line that’ll have you singing along to your Spring cleaning in no time.

Following on in the same uplifting vein we have ‘My Life Is Perfect Now’ – this time the lead vocals are the responsibility of Jannie Linnebæk and boy what a great job she does too. Again that all important boogie bassline is clearly evident and the lush pads, strat licks and synth swells make this a real dancefloor treat.

Next up… Got To Get Out – a delightful rhodes driven groover that’s simply jam packed full of F.U.N.K. and continues DATO’s theme of catchy chorus-lines, uplifting Nordic melodies and the general feeling that even when life gets tough, a way of getting out and experiencing positivity again is just around the corner.

So to sum this release up – the ‘Hard To Find EP’ does exactly what is says on the tin, and by this we mean that in this day-and-age it’s very ‘hard to find’ Dance music of this hi-end calibre… this is contemporary Scandinavian Nu Disco at it’s finest!

We hope you ENJOY! :o)

Hello,

Before we pull out the special brew and drape ourselves in bunting, here’s a small and perfectly formed selection of wares for you crazy republicans looking to buy tunes!

To start, we’ve pressed up and bound all three of Demdike Stare’s 2010 LP’s: ‘Forest Of Evil’, ‘Liberation Through Hearing’ and ‘Voices Of Dust’ in a limited edition run of 400 copies for the world – if you missed out first time round we urge you to cop a set while you can.

BJ Nilsen & Stilluppsteypa’s ‘Space Finale’ was undoubtedly one of 2010’s most affecting ambient electronic albums; a deeply cherished bedtime favourite. Returning on the esteemed Helen Scarsdale Agency with ‘Big Shadow Montana’, the pair enter a new dream phase soundtracked by their achingly beautiful synth dissonance, now with forays into disturbed exotica and more orchestral stirrings for some ethereal other place.

Mater Suspiria Vision splits opinion like few others in his scene, which is essentially just him. He sounds a bit like Salem, and a bit like Gatekeeper, but more far more faded and f**cked. For most, his ‘Crack Witch’ LP is the best place to fully gauge his sound and it helpfully appears on (limited, marbled white) vinyl this week for the first time. Together with his individual artwork, it’s safe to say you won’t find any other record quite like it this year.

Two of our favourite new unter-pop producers, Montreal’s D’eon and Grimes, follow up extraordinary debut albums with their ‘Darkbloom’ split through Hippos In Tanks/Arbutus this week. Grimes’ side is just exquisitely wyrd yet urbane, and D’eon’s joyfully positive and inventive. If you’re not aware of them by now, you seriously need to get acquainted. Seriously!

Julianna Barwick effortlessly glides into our list of recommendations with her already acclaimed ‘The Magic Place’, presented on Asthmatic Kitty. Her sound is redolent of Grouper, but her wordless songs are distinctly beautiful in their own right, with a personal, deeply precious sense of soul that can’t be ignored.

While many of our favourite modern chanteuse’s are looking to shoegazy 4AD sounds, Natalie Mering aka Weyes Bluhd/Weyes Blood has imbibed from the eternal well of Nico for inspiration and come out with the compelling ‘The Outside Room’. Enhanced by a mixing job from The Shadow Ring’s Graham Lambkin, this is one of the most unique records the Not Not Fun stable have released of late, and that’s saying something! There’s only 480 copies on this one to boot.

Elsewhere – Kranky finally present the overdue vinyl and CD copies of Belong’s excellent ‘Common Era’, Ilyas Ahmed and Steve Gunn deliver a sublime missive from Chicago’s Immune label for fans of the Takoma school, Gold Panda’s ‘Marriage’ finally appears on vinyl and features remixes from Forest Swords, Star Slinger and Baths, while Addison Groove returns for Martyn’s 3024 label, altering his palette in line with the label aesthetic, sounding remarkably like Martyn doing Juke in the process!

Also out this week, new music from Soul Jazz, Dels, Sun Ra, Fleet Foxes, Robag Wruhme, Tindersticks, Larsen, Silkie, Tempa, Roll The DIce, Merzbow, and the incredible 4LP Daphne Oram set, available once again.

Have yourselves a fabulous week……

Peace! nekkers….xx

DEMDIKE STARE
Forest Of Evil / Liberation Through Hearing / Voices of Dust (Limited Edition 3LP Set)
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
Modern Love
3LP // £34.99

*Due to high demand we’re making all three of Demdike Stare’s 2010 LP’s available again in an edition of 400 copies for the world – available to buy as a set only. Please note that the set does NOT include the 40 minutes of bonus material included with the Tryptych CD set* Demdike Stare is a project made up of two insatiable vinyl collectors based in the north of England: Sean Canty (who works for the esteemed Finders Keepers label) and Miles Whittaker (a longtime producer and DJ who has released music under the MLZ moniker and as part of Pendle Coven). The music Demdike Stare make is hard to pin down, based largely around archival musical sources ranging from obscure library records to long forgotten jazz, early electronic, and industrial recordings, alongside an array of Iranian, Pakistani, Turkish and Eastern European material largely unknown in the Western world. Demdike Stare absorb and re-align these found sounds via their ever-expanding array of analogue machinery, ending up with something that is in part Plunderphonic, but ultimately completely new. Their music has sometimes been lumped-in with the Hypnagogic, Hauntological and, most recently, ‘Witch House’ movements, but ultimately Demdike Stare should appeal to anyone with an interest in everything from classic KPM library records through to the music of Basic Channel and all the way to the smudged, altered-realities of James Ferraro and The Caretaker. That is, at least until the next record, when the frames of reference might just change up and take them somewhere completely different…

BJ NILSEN & STILLUPPSTEYPA
Big Shadow Montana
DARK AMBIENT / DRONE / METAL
The Helen Scarsdale Agency
LP // £10.99

Hot on the heels of their jaw-dropping ‘Space Finale’ cassette and LP on Editions Mego last year, ‘Big Shadow Montana’ is the sixth album from BJ Nilsen & Stilluppsteypa and sees them returning to hallowed San Francisco experimental imprint Helen Scarsdale. Those of you already familiar with the collaborative project will probably be rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of more dusty drones, unusual samples and ethereal harmonies, and let me tell you there’s plenty to keep you going. The first side opens with a familiar overdubbed wheeze, but as the grimy analogue hiss begins to subside, we’re left with a slice of near-orchestral ambience. Punctuated by church organs, BJ Nilsen’s signature synthesizer fizz and Stilluppsteypa’s distant, scraping percussion; you could almost compare this to Deaf Center or (recent) Tim Hecker with its majesty and subtle control, but the real Ace in the pack comes with the second side. The orchestral grandeur of the first piece slowly melts away into the distance, and is swapped out for woozy analogue synthesizer drones – something like hearing Keith Fullerton Whitman jam with Eleh in a distant corridor, possibly underground. This hardly prepares you for the conclusion however, which ends up in near-exotica territory with drum machines, vintage organs and bass playing a jaunty but disturbing funeral march into hell. As usual from these guys ‘Big Shadow Montana’ is essential, gripping stuff, but it’s the artists’ sense of humour that really sets them apart from the competition. Anything is possible, and all of it is essential. Highly recommended.

MATER SUSPIRIA VISION
Crack Witch
ELECTRONIC
LIVING TAPES
LP // £14.99

**Strictly limited Marbled white vinyl edition** ‘Crack Witch’ is the most in-demand record by W*tch House loner, Mater Suspiria Vision. Originally released as a cassette in 2010, it now appears on vinyl due to popular demand. If you weren’t quite convinced by him yet, this is really the place to start. Like Salem soundtracking an early ’80s Giallo with Gatekeeper, ‘Crack Witch’ features five tracks of blunted drum machines, acres of arcane reverb space and hypnotic samples smudged into a certain type of narcotic bliss. The A-side features four shorter tracks laden with dystrophic beats and cheap, petrified effects put to murky effect. The prophetic flipside is unanchored; a sprawling, beatless collage of droning synth slurry and sewer ambience like the soundtrack to unwanted sleep paralysis. Brilliantly uncomfortable stuff, features unique artwork by Cosmotropia De Xam.

D’EON / GRIMES
Darkbloom
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
Hippos In Tanks / Arbutus
LP // £9.99

HIT’s latest is an electronic pop marriage made in a simulated heaven, pairing Montreal’s D’eon and Grimes on a most delicious split with Arbutus Records. Both artists are relative debutantes to the scene; D’eon dropping his ‘Palinopsia’ LP to widespread acclaim in 2010, and Grimes recently arriving to much fanfare on her spellbinding ‘Halfaxa’ LP – one of our favourites of the year so far. While their styles are rhythmically rooted in opposing spheres, they share a kindred taste for boldly emotive pop music drawing on the ethereal electronic melancholy of late ’80s 4AD releases and mid-’90 dance-pop without forgetting that they make music in 2011. Grimes contributes five exquisitely wyrd and windswept cyber-pop programmes, none more effective than the jaw-dropping ‘Urban Twilight’, scouting the sprawl with Ed Rush style sentinel drones while her vocals appear to plot spiralling vectors in the polluted synth hues of a Metropolitan night sky. D’eon’s four tracks are helplessly, and brilliantly, diverse but again dominated by one outstanding example in ‘Thousand Mile Trench’, a previously unimagined fusion of skittering Footwork drums, luscious R&B harmonies and time-suspending chords, next to the light-footed dBridge-like ‘Tongues’ and one of the finest uses of mobile phone signal distortion on ‘Telepathy’. Ostensibly, these nine tracks are pure pop, but there’s an experimental undercurrent to each one which we urge those who find the “P” word offensive to check out at the nearest opportunity. Highly recommended!

JULIANNA BARWICK
The Magic Place
HOME LISTENING / MODERN CLASSICAL / AMBIENT
Asthmatic Kitty
LP // £12.49

Julianna Barwick’s 2009 record ‘Florine’ launched her into an unprecedented cacophony of applause. The Brooklyn-via-Louisiana artist’s understated vocal drones may not seem like an obvious frontrunner for indie success, but with Pitchfork singing the record’s praises the groundswell of support was unmistakably positive. ‘The Magic Place’ cements this legacy, and now signed to Asthmatic Kitty, she seems perfectly poised to take her sound even further into the wide world of leftfield pop. I say pop because the songs on here are indeed songs in the classic sense, but like Grouper before her she has taken only the key elements of the songs, shrouding them in reverb and shredding them down to the bare bones of what is needed. Indeed Grouper might be the most obvious and most fitting modern comparison (especially early work such as ‘Way Their Crept’) but Barwick’s affecting, hymnal style is maybe even closer to the work of Cocteau Twins chanteuse Liz Fraser. There is a distinct beauty to her tones, and the cavernous reverb and wordless songs bear more than a passing resemblance to the Cocteau Twins’ more esoteric moments. These are songs for an age that seem to have passed, and as tragedy and heartbreak surrounds us, to return to something so blissfully simple, so pure and so unmistakably gorgeous is rare pleasure. In that, we have a selection of songs to soak up some of the modern disillusionment, and who wouldn’t need that? Essential.

WEYES BLOOD & THE DARK JUICES
The Outside Room
INDIE / ROCK / ALTERNATIVE
NOT NOT FUN
LP // £14.99

**Limited edition of 480 copies** Natalie Mering (Weyes Bluhd/Jackie-O Motherf*cker) presents a compelling debut solo LP of forlorn “narcotic drifter ballads” for NNF. ‘The Outside Room’ is like a haunting acid flashback to late ’60s Nico, only distorted by time and a drug-degraded memory. Undeniably her vocals bear a genuinely uncanny resemblance to the folk-pop heroine, a fact doubtless enforced by her musical morphosis from murky FX riddled experiments as Weyes Bluhd towards death-folk guitars, doom-laced drums and stark ambience. But it’s possibly the final mix and recording from The Shadow Ring’s Graham Lambkin which really brings her songs into bleakly spacious relief. However, it’s not like she’s totally abandoned her old sound, it’s just been rendered in a different, yet more sepulchral light and with more space to swoon and float between her ghostly words. Most notably, her anachronistic style really stands out from the warped, sideways futurism of NNF’s current crop, and feels far more like some exhumed classic. Includes 11 x 17″ lyric sheet and ace artwork by Mering herself. Highly Recommended!

BELONG
Common Era
ELECTRONIC
Kranky
LP // £11.99

It doesn’t take long for you to realize that Belong’s latest full-length ‘Common Era’ is a shocking new direction for the New Orleans duo. ‘October Language’ was an expertly realized slice of fuzzy ambience, but within seconds of album-opener ‘Come See’ we are treated to drums, guitars and vocals; all the trappings of ‘real music’. A simple exercise in pop, however, this is not and Belong take the framework of classic shoegaze (pre ’92) and put it to work deep inside clouds of white noise and cavernous reverb. Skeletal songs and wordless vocals appear from the dense depths of blurred sound like Grouper playing Jesus and Mary Chain covers in lost cavern, a few miles of the coast. The overall sound occasionally brings to mind the early days of Factory Records, with the shimmer of The Durutti Column ever-present and stark, pounding drum machine pulsing in the background. Don’t think for a second however that ‘Common Era’ is merely an exercise in the retro-worship though, these songs are deep and memorable, haunting and strikingly melancholy. Just like My Bloody Valentine experimented with extreme distortion and degraded tape warble on ‘Loveless’, Belong have used ‘Common Era’ to similarly play with the song form. The songs sound totally enhanced by the duo’s deft treatments, and this is a rare example of how something you secretly wish would happen (drone band make pop songs, keep ‘em droney) actually happens. A gorgeous record in every sense of the word, and a daring move for a band that just keep getting better and better. Unmissably good, and a HUGE recommendation.

Singles of the Week

ILYAS AHMED / STEVE GUNN
Decline Of The Stiff / Ignored The End
FOLK / AMERICANA
IMMUNE
7″ // £5.99

Chicago’s wonderful Immune Recordings pair two sensitively talented solo guitarists on their latest 7″. Steve Gunn occupies the A-side with the Fahey-esque 12-string expressions of ‘Decline Of The Stiff’, picking out a ribbon of complex but soulful Blues joined by his own husky vocals which are gently reverbed around the space. If you picked up his ‘Sundowner’ LP for Digitalis you’ll certainly want to hear this. Turn over and you might find Ilyas Ahmed’s ‘Ignored The End’ may not be as technically precise, yet elicits a more magical and heartbroken atmosphere as beautiful as it is forlorn. We say this about a lot of Immune releases, but this is sublime. Limited copies only.

GOLD PANDA / FOREST SWORDS
Marriage (Forest Swords / Star Slinger/ Baths Mix)
ELECTRONIC
Notown Records
12″ // £6.99

Heartwarmingly lovely single from Gold Panda, including suitably brilliant remixes by Star Slinger, Forest Swords and Baths. The swaying pulses and convective synth loops of the original ‘Marriage’ give a fertile starting point for the remixes, from Star Slinger’s killer, Salem-style slowfast cruiser, to the crumpled folds of Baths’ crisp-but-smudged ambient pop version and a complete overhaul from Forest Swords. It’s possibly this mix that deserves the most attention, effectively replacing all the original elements with plangent, dubbed guitar, creepy ambient pads and ghostly African chorals. Highly Recommended!

ADDISON GROOVE
It’s Got Me / Minutes Of Funk
DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
3024
12″ // £5.99

Addison Groove squares up to the ‘floor with two twinkle-toed specials for Martyn’s 3024 label. It’s his 3rd single in as many weeks, following the ‘Work It’ session for Swamp 81 and ‘This Is It’ on Tectonic, but these vibes are more red-lit and sensuous than any of those. The midnight-primed ‘It’s Got Me’ swaggers to dextrously nipped and tucked 808 programming and Martyn-styled rhodes motifs resulting in one of the most laidback AG tunes we’ve heard. With ‘Minutes Of Funk’ he drops the tempo to roll at House pace, sounding kinda like Fast Eddie got blunted with Virgo on some weird, obscure Dance Mania episode.

Revered and restlessly active sound artist Christina Kubisch presents two longform pieces created from recordings of electromagnetic fields at international airports and inside airplanes. ‘Magnetic Flights’ uses sounds recorded with the aid of special sensitive wireless headphones, developed and constructed by herself and engineer Manfred Fox, which detect and amplify overground and underground electromagnetic fields and makes them audible. As she states “The sounds are much more musical than one…

Mono Fluido
Important Records
CD // £13.99

“Mono Fluido’ collects two major compositions from Christina Kubisch which, until now, have been unreleased. Extensive liner notes and & photographs detail the origins of the work. Heavy drones and deep emotions run through these newly discovered pieces.” In 1980, the deeply fascinating sound artist Christina Kubisch made some professional recordings in an Italian studio for the soundtrack of Fabrizio Plessi’s ‘Liquid Movie’. She returned to the sounds in ’81,…

**Edition of 100 copies. OHM RESISTANCE
CD // £11.99

“In short, it was fabulous: not really improvising, but suggesting the marathoning spirit of high-impact free jazz; not really composition, but held together with the technique and concentration of grindcore drumming. Just barely, through the amazing din and throughout the set, you could hear sounds that weren’t coming from Merzbow: the audience cheering.” NY Times. IMMUNE

Turn over and you…
AGNES OBEL
Philharmonics (Deluxe Edition)
Pias
2CD // £9.99

**Deluxe Edition: Includes a bonus disc of live recordings and unreleased piano versions** Anyone who heard the recent Riverside 10″ EP from Danish-born Agnes Obel will know exactly what sort of spectral loveliness to expect from the singer-songwriter’s full-length. Philharmonics is a delicately poised affair that certainly doesn’t over-do it in terms of the arrangements; pieces such as ‘Beast’, ‘Just So’ and ‘Close Watch’ manage to sound haunting and intimate…
JOHN STAMMERS
John Stammers
SOMETIME SONGS LIMITED
LP // £15.49

Here’s a nice quiet one for springtime – John Stammers is a Northern chap, and seems to have more than a passing interest in the music of Richard Thompson and Nick Drake. That’s not to say these wistful guitar/vocal led compositions are carbon copies of either, but if you’ve got a well-worn copy of ‘Five Leaves Left’ on your shelf in the front room then there’s a good chance you’ll…
SARABETH TUCEK
Get Well Soon
Sonic Cathedral
LP // £14.49

**Now available on vinyl!** 2nd album from Brooklyn’s Sarabeth Tucek following her acclaimed eponymous debut in 2007. By all rights you should probably be more familiar with her name and music, but due to the death of her father following the release of her debut, Sarabeth had more important things to deal with. That experience provides the inspiration for ‘Get Well Soon’, calling it “an impressionistic rendering of a time…

Big Dada
CD // £8.49

Touching down to a hail of hype, Big Dada’s newest UK hiphop hope finally drops his debut album. ‘Gob’ is the work of one Kieran Dickens, a sharp-tongued, quick-witted and distinctive new voice in UK music. Unavoidably, there’s a clear resemblance to Roots Manuva, who appears on ‘Capsize’ featuring Joe Goddard, but Dels is of a newer generation, rarely offering explicit references to any sense of heritage other than the…

‘The Magic Place’ cements this legacy, and now signed to Asthmatic Kitty, she seems perfectly poised to take her sound even further into the wide world of…

Undeniably her vocals bear a genuinely uncanny resemblance to the folk-pop heroine, a fact doubtless enforced by her musical morphosis from murky FX riddled experiments as…
BIRTH CONTROL
Backdoor Possibilities

Birth Control were a progressive rock band formed in Berlin circa 1968, fusing elements of jazz, psyche and nascent Krautrock. They recorded what is arguably their creative zenith, ‘Backdoor Possibilities’ in 1976 for the legendary Brain Records with Conny Plank at the mixing desk, aduring roughly the same period as the bonus disc feature, ‘Live at Sartory Saal, Cologne, 24.9.1976’. In classic prog style the original album is a surreal…

PAT JORDACHE
Future Songs
Constellation
CD // £12.99

Somehow ‘Future Songs’ is the perfect title for this blown-out set from Canadian noisenik Pat Gregoire. Shrouded in the kind of roomy, wrong-but-right recording you’d expect to hear on a punk tape in 1978 there is absolutely nothing even remotely connected to the future over forty minutes, but at the same time it makes perfect sense. Gregoire is obsessed with jangly guitar pop of all kinds, and this obsession manifests…

LP // £12.99

Chicago outfit Disappears burst out of nowhere last year with debut LP ‘Lux’ and immediately attracted media attention with their smoggy, narcotic sound. Although now backed up by the star-presence of Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley on drums in a…
FLEET FOXES
Helplessness Blues
Bella Union
CD // £10.99

Blues was never a genre that sprung to mind when listening to Fleet Foxes debut EP ‘Sun Giant’ or their breakthrough self-titled debut full length. Well this time around the darker, sadder side of the band has been exposed, and it’s hardly surprising. The way their debut was received was…

I must admit when I plonked this one on the stereo for the first time, I was pretty sure that No Babies were a Japanese band. They’re not Japanese though, the band are from the sizzling musical hotbed of Oakland, California and this self…

Legendary recordings of Sun Ra’s first UK appearance at Queen Elizabeth Hall on November 9, 1970. The show was regarded by David Toop in his book ‘Ocean Of Sound’ as “…one of the most spectacular concerts ever held in this country.” and despite not having the light show and a full Intergalactic Research Arkestra in front of you, the music evidently justifies that statement. ASC
Comsat / The Lair
BLKND
12″ // £5.99

ASC is in prolific form recently, but thankfully his quantity is still quality. Stepping away from the more atmospheric styles, ‘Comsat’ is a ‘floor-dedicated future D&B killer, all streamlined bass contours and dextrously diced edits. ‘The Lair’ is a greater departure, a rare instance of him incorporating full drum breaks, albeit sliced and fractured, into a beastly killer teetering between classic drumfunk and wave-shaped nextisms.
SKEPTICAL AND DUB PHIZIX
Silo / The Enemy
Dispatch Recordings
12″ // £5.99

Supremely agile D&B from two producers to keep an ear on. A-side ‘Silo’ is driven by snarling Neurofunk bass licks and punctuated with ice-picked snare hits for the streamlined junglist moves. ‘The Enemy’ works with a similar percussive palette, but feels more spacious, giving those pointillist drums nuff room to ricochet limbs and torsos while the bass is a brooding, subliminal presence stalking the edges.
JESS MILLS
Vultures (Photek Mix)
ISLAND
10″ // £5.99

Prepped for big things, Jess Mills presents her opening solo track ‘Vultures’, backed with a mighty Photek remix. The D&B heads will probably recognise her name from an appearance on Breakage’s ‘Fighting Fire’, and he’s returned the favour with a brooding construction of Trip-Hop drum breaks and darkside synths here. Better yet is Photek’s Dub remix, dropping the slightly clunky breaks and opening out into sophisticated widescreen dread-pop zones.

ANBB – ‘Mimikry’ CD (Raster Noton) – £18 / £19 / £20
Being friends and admirers of each other’s work for a long time, electronic music composer / visual artist Alva Noto (Carsten Nicolai) and composer / voice artist Blixa Bargeld (Einstürzende Neubauten / Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds) decided to join forces to initiate a collaborative project in 2007. Together they developed a musical concept combining improvisation and abstraction. Working on their own experimental material that gains its strength from the spontaneity of the live-performance of Bargeld’s voice as well as rethinking traditional songs in their own special manner, they deliver an outstanding and inspiring musical blend for their audience. Mimikry readopts two original tracks and two alternative versions from the “Ret Marut Handshake” EP, while also introducing six completely new songs. The CD comes with a special 16 page booklet presenting original text / drawings of Blixa Bargeld that developed during the recordings.
ARTEFACTUM – ‘Foxgloves & Bluebells’ CD (Old Europa Cafe / Ur Muzik) – £11 / £12 / £13
As one of the very few representatives of what might be labelled as feminine ambient music, Artefactum remains the embodiment of unique characteristics: deep and warm ambient intertwined with sounds of nature, ritual bells, remote drumming and sensual vocals. While still within the borders of ambient, this release also contains a collection of beautiful songs inspired by old poetry and mysterious folklore. With wonderful guest appearances from neo-medieval The Soil Bleeds Black, British folk singer Andrew King (Sol Invictus) and neo-classical Dawn & Dusk Entwined, “Foxgloves & Bluebells” is a must-have release for anyone into esoteric post-industrial music. 6-panel digipak.

BAD SECTOR – ‘Chronoland’ CD (Power & Steel / Loki Foundation) – £11 / £12 / £13
This new album of Massimo Magrini is the soundscape for a mind movie and another masterpiece that picks up where the previous work “CMASA” left off. 12 beautifully crafted chapters of music segueing between morphing layers of thick drones, haunting melodies and crackling vocal transmissions. “Chronoland” unfolds a fascinating and cinematic atmosphere of frightening ambient melodica with dark soundwaves deeply embedded in the music and bursts of electro-acoustic effects. This release is another step forward into the sound cosmos of Massimo Magrini with new directions but always in the unique way of Bad Sector. Comes in a 6-panel outsize digisleeve.
BLOOD BOX – ‘Funeral In An Empty Room’ CD (Power & Steel / Loki Foundation)
– £12 / £13 / £14
Seven years after the highly acclaimed “Iron Dream” CD (Eibon) and 14 years after the CD debut, “A World of Hurt” (Malignant), Blood Box finally returns with a new album! As one part of revered Dark Ambient project Yen Pox, Michael JV Hensley is certainly no stranger to creating epic and immersive soundscapes, and with “Funeral In An Empty Room”, he has yet again meticulously crafted another highly detailed, intensely atmospheric work. Awash in slow, dreamlike waves of morphing textures, and blissfully unfurling cosmic drift, this is nothing less than an aural vision down the hypnotic path to the unknown; serene yet gloomy, with multiple layers of swelling tones, subdued melodies, and ominous, spacey effects. Comes with 12-page booklet. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
BOYD RICE AND FRIENDS – ‘Music, Martinis, And Misanthropy 21st Anniversary Edition’ LP
(Extremocidente) – £20 / £23.50 / £27
21st Anniversary edition of this classic release! “Some records do not need an introduction. Some records define a genre and refine a chain of thought. They give you a pat in the back and let you know they’ve been there forever. They let you know you’re right. Music Martinis & Misanthropy came out 21 years ago. There is no need for an age of consent to unwrap all its gifts but it feels damn nice to be 21 and this is a gift, from us to you: 2 tracks from the original release, one from the CD reissue and two new. Pressed in mint green vinyl and limited to 666 numbered copies, housed in a UV spot varnished cover and with six postcards and a lyrics inner… Life feels great.”

CISFINITUM / THE [LAW-RAH] COLLECTIVE – ‘[ANS]werk’ CD (Fario) – £11 / £12 / £13
Dark Ambient masters Cisfinitum and The [Law-Rah] Collective dedicated this split and common work to one of the very first synthesizers in the world, the ANS. The ANS, created by Russian engineer E. Murzin, is an incredible response to the synesthesia theories (the letters ANS stand for Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin who linked tones to colours). The ANS (only one copy exists and is kept in Moscow) generates special frequencies from drawings and can also create a visible image of a sound frequency. Artists such as Coil, Edward Artemiev (for Tarkovsky’s “Solaris” soundtrack) and Alfred Schnittke used the ANS in their compositions. For this album, The [Law-Rah] Collective and Cisfinitum based their music on original sounds from the ANS as well as additional recordings of various analog synths, fractal and granular synthesis, voice, violin, field recordings. They give birth to an intense cold and grey music upon which fly ghosts of melodies, archaic or yet to come. A5 sleeve.

DAVID E. WILLIAMS ENSEMBLE EXPERIENCE PROJECT – ‘Untitled’ 7″ (Tesco USA /
Ur Muzik
) – £8 / £9 / £10
Nearly a quarter-century into a staggering solo career, David E. Williams has decided to join a band. Granted, the David E. Williams Ensemble Experience Project is a band that bears his name, but it still signifies the first time the noir singer-songwriter has collaborated so freely on new songs with other musicians. He wrote these tunes as he normally does – at the piano, in the kitchen, under heavy sorrow – but the final arrangements represent the creative contribution of five people. The result is a David E. Williams release where his trademark absurdity ad profundum is equally matched by organic breadth, pop majesty and catchy subversion. Ltd x 300 copies. All David E. Williams Titles All 7″ Vinyl

IOSOPHIS – ‘M’ CD (Totsoluna Disc) – £11 / £12 / £13
Second album by Iosophis, the Folk project born of the ashes of the Third Wave. Less minimal, more emotional and organic and all in all more undeniably “folk” than its predecessor “N”, “M” was inspired and recorded live, three days after the Winter Solstice, in miscellaneous places such as small churches, ruins and forests near the centre of France. Sometimes reminiscent of 70s English Folk music, sometimes calling to mind the work of Scivias or Cascadian folk bands… Digipak.

MICHEL BANABILA – ‘The Latest Research From The Department Of Electrical Engineering’
CD (Tapu Records / Lumberton Trading Company / AudioTong) – £8 / £9 / £10
The latest work from Dutch composer Michel Banabila. The music is created mainly from electrical sources, but the approach is not clinical, rather mechanical, loud, intrusive, but also has a distinct human factor to it. It is clearly Banabila doing the engineering here, obviously enjoying his new ‘mad scientist’ incarnation. Some of the recordings arose from earlier mix-versions of tracks originally made for the dance performance ZOUT, by Conny Janssen Danst & Anne Soldaat. Unlike previous Banabila albums, there is very little of the so-called ‘world music’, voice samples or jazz influences, but instead a mainly electronic angle, with a special contribution by sound-artist/performer Zenial (AudioTong, Vivo Records). 40mins of music. Ltd x 300 copies in a card sleeve.
ZSOLT SORES AHAD – ‘Ahad’s Master’s Garden III (22007 – 2009): The Harmonian Blues’
2 x CD (Fourth Dimension / AudioTong) – £13.50 / £14.50 / £15.50
A fantastic double CD by Zsolt Sorés (aka Ahad), Budapest-based sound artist and improviser. These two discs capture the prolific and versatile musician in a fully tranced-out fug that draws not only from his background in rock music but also his strong leanings towards the avant-garde and improvisation partly formed by being classically-trained yet never content to remain as such. In turn, we are treated to some near-mystical and transcendental journeys… contemporary psychedelia, spaceward-bound forays, expansive and drone-bound guitar textures. Inspired by Fourier’s Harmonian Opera and several quotations by Hakim Bey, Sores’ has created an album that resonates with depth of a nature rarely found these days. Ltd x 500 copies in a gatefold digisleeve.

CIRCULAR – ‘Shaping The Unknown’ CD (Loki Foundation) – £11 / £12 / £13

This debut defines an opulent style of meditative ambient music and celebrates the pure sound engines of perfect analogue synthesizer music. Johannes Riedel created an elegant and stylish form of drone music to build ellipses in between sculptures blowing through the triangular center. These aural paintings uncover sacred landscapes of drifting loops and the brilliant use of guitars to set up an unearthly visionary wall of sound. Circular’s music disposes a special principle where tracks build up slowly and take a period of concentration, of taking shape, followed by overwhelming massive soundworlds from outer states. Digipak.

EX.ORDER – ‘Corporate Control’ CD (Power & Steel / Loki Foundation)
– £11 / £12 / £13

Ex.Order disrupt your synapses with “Corporate Control”. Ten new tracks of an immensely raw sonic and violent aesthetic, constructed through dark throbbing machine noises, crushing rhythmic layers and vocals. Highly explosive heavy electronics, uncompromising and provocative both sonically and visually. An unforgiving tour de force capturing the perfection of disorder. The absolute response to the nightmare that is the world we live in. Ex.Order is the Power Electronics alter-ago of Inade.

HERBST9 – ‘From A Dark Chasm Below’ CD (Loki Foundation)
– £11 / £12 / £13

The legendary and long deleted debut album from 1999, now finally available again in a carefully remastered version. Complex, textural ambience, consisting of layer upon layer of kinetic, luminous tones and ephemeral nuances of time. Nearly 70 minutes of finest ritual ambient music, mesmerizing rhythmic percussion with deep and sonorous drones. Herbst9 construct sonic rituals gleaned from the ruins of minds scraped hollow and left to decay while natural sounds and archaic motives develop visionary sequences.

INADE – ‘The Crackling Of The Anonymous’ CD (Loki Foundation)
– £11 / £12 / £13

This dark and hallucinatory masterwork, is constructed via the never heard utterances of the void, while tapping into the psyche of the impossible. A stunning dark ambient release that defies all logic because it creates its own! Gorgeous 6-panel digipak by the masters of Dark ambience!! A must-have for fans of Lustmord!

LAND:FIRE – ‘Gone’ LP (Power & Steel / Loki Foundation) – £12 / £15.50 / £19

The debut release from the Herbst9 project! Massive drones and sinister melodies rise out from the inside of a dark and bleak ground while crushing rhythms and unreal vocal shreds echoing through a wide spectrum of sounds and effects. The perfect sound journey through devastated landscapes. Ltd x 750 copies.

LAND:FIRE – ‘Shortwave Transmission’ CD (Power & Steel / Loki Foundation)
– £11 / £12 / £13

Coming back with an all new album after more than 5 years the alter ego of Herbst9 delivers another outstanding soundtrack about radiological warfare and it’s debris during the last century. SWT is like a massive energy spike with a surrounding maelstrom of machine noises, rhythms, interferences and electromagnetic waves. The complex arrangement of technical sounds creates a deadly atmosphere of fallout and devastated landscapes with an apocalyptic aura reflected by dissonant harmonies and deep shimmering ambient scapes. Presented in a 6 panel digipak. Mastered by Andreas Wahnmann (First Law).

S.E.T.I. – ‘Corona’ CD (Power & Steel / Loki Foundation) – £11 / £12 / £13

Being active in the fields of electronic music since 1982 Andrew Lagowski started to work with his deep space sound project S.E.T.I. in 1992. Now with the fifth album and numerous other releases in between a connection is made with the first highly anticipated album KNOWLEDGE released in 1994. The new album CORONA unfolds an atmosphere that lies with the heart of the cosmos. Deep and slowly moving waves of cosmic drones, harmonic oscillations, NASA recordings and snippets of radio broadcasts creating a spectrum of pulsating and ever-evolving sound. This is research into extra-terrestrial intelligence in it’s purest form. If there is something out there it may sound like this!

THE COLD SPRING TEAM

Apr 262011

Hi Everyone, OnderStroom hits the spot again with three new releases! The time has come to announce the long awaited Ultimate Edition 5xLP box by Snowy Red. This box set covers everything he recorded in between 1980-1984. As second release we have the Early Tapes by The Neon Judgement, now available for the first time on CD with extra bonus tracks. And lastly the re-issue of Music for Fireworks by Polar Praxis. Described as “an insane record” by many, will be available on splatter color vinyl with a whole new cover. Hit it.

SNOWY RED – Ultimate Edition 1980-1984 5xLP box
Tremendous 5xLP box by one of the highest acclaimed minimal synth bands active during our favorite decade. The Snowy Red project started as a one-man band by Micky Mike. With a few synthesizers, a 12/2 mixing desk and a 2-track reel to reel recorder he created repetitive synth masterpieces in the vein of Suicide and Polyphonic Size.

These black synthetic pearls were spread over two albums: the self-titled “Snowy Red” and “The Right To Die”, both are included in this box, officially remastered, and with original artwork. Only a few months ago, when the project was nearing completion, Michael Thiel (the son of Micky) made the discovery we were all waiting for, DEMO tracks of the first album!!  Besides proto-versions of “Blood Blood Blood”, “Maud Is Dead” and Deep Desire”, the main discovery is the 22 minutes version of “The Wild Boys”: an electronic trip you do not want to end!

And there’s more… Underground club hit “Breakdown” was released throughout the eighties in several different versions. Included in this box are the 12 inch and the 7 inch versions, both featuring the beautiful Carol on vocals. Further down the line on disc four we find Micky Mike’s solo version of the track which was first released on “Walking After Midnight” in 1980. This is an absolutely raw and honest version. Also included are the unreleased tracks “Lies In Your Eyes” and “Red Skies”, both excellent additions to the Snowy Red puzzle, and three stripped down demo’s made for the “Vision” album.

Very different from the first two releases, the “Vision” album was Micky’s most ambitious effort. With the help of friends (Niki Mono) and the addition of saxophone and eastern instruments Micky Mike’s talent as a producer was pushed to the limit. “Vision” conceptualized a total spectacle: there was a video to accompany the album and the live shows were truly theatrical. But even without these visionary additions the album has a certain grandeur, almost like an electronic opera.

In short this 5xLP box is essential stuff for anyone interested in the history of the Belgian minimal synth god Snowy Red.

Many many thanks to Michael Thiel for making this project possible.

POLAR PRAXIS – Music For Fireworks LP

In 1978, Philippe Genion bought a guitar for 1000 belgian francs (25€). He connected it to his hifi amp, quickly learned how to play “smoke on the water” and a few punk songs with two fingers and within two weeks, pushing the amp more and more to the limit, blew his 200W speakers out. Later, around 1980, he bought an old ARP synthesizer from walloon band “Jo Lemaire plus Flouze” and started playing with these instruments and a few old flanger and distorsion pedals, and started recording songs on a reel-tape recorder belonging to the RTBF !

Philippe Genion started creating bands with all the friends that he was meeting in the train from Charleroi to Brussels, on the way to the rock concerts he went to several times per week. This way, many bands were created, among which Los Casios, The Presocratic Umbrellas, JTB, Confite Sonar and à;GRUMH… which became a major EBM band of the 80’s and now has a practically cult status.

In the meantime, parallel to being involved in bands with other people, Genion, who had become S3 EVETS, created three solo projects : A FINGER SOCIETY, for pop electronic songs, THE PENULTIMATE INFINITY, for arty projects, not only music but also painting, poems, writing and performances and POLAR PRAXIS for more serious and also industrial music.

The only project that became prolific was Polar Praxis. A first tape called “GORY OSCILLATION” came out on Titicaca, a long improvisation made on the basis of three cassette tapes, mixed together with live studio interventions. After that, S3 started to compose songs in various styles, industrial, electro, experimental, minimalistic, and also repetitive music. The first tape called “WERK EEN” was released on TTKK, later followed by “WERK TWEE” en “WERK DRIE” both with collector multiple covers.

In 1985, Polar Praxis released “MUSIQUES POUR FEUX D’ARTIFICE” on Play it Again Sam’s “Scarface” sub-label, a two side/two songs LP containing rythmic dance-like electronic music, which pre-figured the DJ’S of the end of the 90’s !  Later, on the new label created by S3 and Kenny Gates of PIAS, “CIRCLE RECORDS”, Polar Praxis released a second, and last, mini-album “FIREWORKS”,  a collection of songs all titles “Music for Fireworks”, repetitive music in the style and inspiration of Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Both were actually used as music for profesionnal fireworks in Belgium and Europe.

THE NEON JUDGEMENT – Early Tapes CD

EARLY TAPES compromises the first recordings of the duo Dirk Da Davo and TB Frank and is now, for the first time, available on CD!

The Neon Judgement was formed in 1980/1981. Instantly they self-released two cassettes. With a limited amount of electronic instruments, they recorded their debut: “Suffering”. The first version of their classic track “Factory Walk” is on this tape, a much more raw version than the one which would later become an underground clubhit. “Sweet Revenge” and “Schyzophrenic Freddy” remind of Suicide and the almost claustrophobic sounding tracks “Harem” and “Army Green (WOIII) are in the veign of the industrial music of Cabaret Voltaire or even Throbbing Gristle.

Their second cassette “TV Treated” is certainly as good. “Sister Sue” and “On My Own” are ready to eat tracks for fans of Front 242 en Luc Van Acker. The remastered versions of these rare cassettes are now compiled on “Early Tapes”, an overview of TNJ 1980/1981. The first two bonus tracks, recorded live @ Arno’s in Leuven, give us an insight into the live performances of The Neon Judgement and the third extra track let’s us meet the solo project of Dirk Da Davo with the track “Sexhead”.

This CD is limited to 1000 copies. The accompanying booklet includes song lyrics and rare photo’s from the TNJ archive
